Reviews for Hotel Schaepkens van St Fijt
Review 1:Not recommended for young couples as the main clientele are people well into their retirement age. Lots of wheelchairs, strollers etc - place felt like an elderly home.
Review 2:Could have done with tea and coffee facilities and the bar staff were a bit off putting but quite funny and made a great end to the night tokens were different.
Review 3:Great price and within 10 minutes of the town centre a nice walk down. Friendly staff and clean rooms. Breakfast was very continental but plenty of it.
Review 4:No bad experience but could have done with tea making facilities and hairdryer in room.
Review 5:Excellent location a lovely town. The food was lovely and the staff extremely friendly and polite.
Review 6:We had one of the rooms on the top floors. It was quite small with not a lot of space to move around. We stayed during a period of warm weather and the temperature in the room was a bit uncomfortable as it got too warm. Some things were rather basic- e.g. plastic drink cups in bathroom, an actual glass would be nice as it increases comfort standards but that might just be being picky!
Review 7:Central location. Helpful staff. Good breakfast. Overall clean and comfortable enough for one night.
Review 8:So small room in the roof nothing in the room no fridge for cold water it was my first experience at 3 stars hotel so the amount of money too much for one night
Review 9:The place in the heart if the city 5 min walk from the street of restaurants and castel
Review 10:Hotel is very old. Door does not close firmly (but locked, no worries) and every 5 or 10 minutes you could hear the door move againt the frame. Nothing given in the bahtroom except soap but there were enough towels. Breakfast is ok although we d prefer more than eggs in the warm section.
Review 11:Staff is quite friendly. Location close to train station. (Less than 5 minute walk) and so within a walking distance to restaurants.
Review 12:We went to Thermae 2000 and it was pretty far from the hotel. So we decided to go by car. If you are planning to walk from hotel to Thermae 2000, it is advisable to go by car or in the day time, especially for women. You dont really want to walk that far from SPA and it can be pretty dark on the way back so you may not feel too safe.
Review 13:Staffs are super friendly!!! Our room was filled with smell of smoke (this is non smoking hotel) so we went to reception and the lady at the reception immediately changed the room for us. And the way she handled this was very friendly and nice. Facility was old but ok enough for us.Center and castle was within walking distance. There was enough parking space compared to other hotel in the city center.
Review 14:We stayed at this hotel, mystified by the poor service, starting with a requirement that demanded prepayment for accommodation and immediate payment at the desk with no room charge back for any extra services, no restaurant service was available and a bar service that necessitated us to buy tokens from the front desk, no hotel umbrellas for loan or directions to recomended restuaraunts. This was disappointing, at best, however totally unacceptable was the rude, arrogant and plainly unacceptable behaviour at reception on the morning of our departure. We still do not know what prompted this behaviour, and even after a note to the Hotel we are still perplexed. This rude behaviour failed to acknowledge us as guest, upset my granddaughter nor could they thank us or wish us well as we checked out. The overall poor service at the hotel was dissapointing, although we are very happy to acknowledge the fantastic service at all other establishments in Valkenburg, in particular the Restaurant which accommodated us for dinner, they supplied superb food, excellent service and character. We will be back soon in Valkenburg but not to stay at Hotel Schaepkens van St Fijt.
Review 15:The decor reminded us of the quality and wonderful experience that this establishment must have once provided. The receptionist who welcomed us was also wonderful.
Review 16:Missing some essentials: No hairdryer. No iron or board. No shampoo (only foaming hand soap). Room was stuffy, had been a smoking room. Very dated. Hairs in room. No ambiance of comfort or welcome
Review 17:Not far from city center. Easy walking to train station.
Review 18:This is where it gets interesting! When checking in I was told that the bar doesn't accept cash! And you can't buy drinks on your room account! The only option is to purchase tokens from reception!!! It costs €18 for 30 tokens. I then went to the bar and waited over 20 minutes for someone to appear and offer us drinks. I ordered 2 beers, 1 tiny glass of wine and 2 bottles of water and was told the total was 39 tokens! This meant another trip back to reception to purchase more. Then feeling like a small child learning to count I had to count out 39 of these silly red tokens. When asked NONE of the staff knew what the token thing was about but I was assured it's not a Dutch thing. Can only guess that they either don't have a licence or they don't trust their bar staff with cash. Every door slams in the hotel like they are sprung on compressed air and the noise echos a lot! The walls are so thin I could hear the family next door having a bath! The hotel seemed to be mostly frequented by the elderly which is why I gather that the temperature gauge was permanently set to 100 DegC. And I'm not exaggerating much. It was SO warm that it was impossible to put coats or jumpers on until you were outside. Everything was very dated and in need of attention. The room was very dark and dingy due to the fact that 5 of the 8 lights were completely missing bulbs and 1 had an exposed socket in the bathroom! Most of the walls on the second floor are raw unfinished plaster, some with flowers painted over the rough surface. Wouldn't stay here again...
Review 19:We stayed here for 1 night whilst visiting the Christmas Markets. We had a large family room on the 2nd floor which was accessible by lift so using the pram was easy. The bed was very comfy as was the sofa bed and cot provided. Secure free car park on site was handy as travelling with young children. Location was ok but not great. Approx 20 min walk to the caves and markets.
Review 20:Ordered by receptionist NOT to leave dogs in the room alone even through meals,as not to disturb other guests....seems she must have forgot the hotel is dog friendly. Long time waiting in bar for service as bar man was also a waiter
Review 21:Location was excellent as was Valkenburg
Review 22:Pillows were old, and lumpy. We enjoyed having the tiny "balcony" on the room, but the door didn't seal well, and therefore traffic from the street was noisy. The bathroom has been updated, but the room was dark, dingy, with little lighting..needs to be upgraded. Even for European breakfast there were few choices
Review 23:Great staff, good wi-fi all over, Excellent location. We took comfort in the gated on site parking as well! The grounds of the hotel were also very nice. Also Within walking distance to Christmas markets!
Review 24:No headboard on the bed and electrical sockets immediately over bed. Compact room. Light out on stairwell. Had to complain about noise from music in bar at 12.15am ( It goes on till 1am) (Not bad as we were on the 5th Floor (near to lift shaft) Breakfast would be ok if there was any left (No Bread Rolls-Cheese- Cold Meat-Glasses) 45 minutes before breakfast was due to finish. Being busy is not really an excuse Less champagne and more attention
Review 25:Leaving
Review 26:It was expensive for one night and not having much in the room. There was no mini fridge, no shampoo and conditioner. They did have body soap.
Review 27:The staff was nice. I read many reviews saying the staff was rude, not with me. They do ask for the money up on front, but I find that normal in Europe. Breakfast was delicious! Very good by the way. Free parking and in a closed area. The room met our needs. Bed was comfortable. Since I was there for business they placed me in a quite area. Wifi worked but connection was slow.
Review 28:No Air Con in the rooms. It was very hot and both nights we slept badly. Maybe a small fridge could be installed in the rooms to keep drinks cold. Rooms are overpriced.
Review 29:The location was good with secure parking and the distance to the train station which was about a 5 minute walk.
Review 30:- location definitely needs to be refurbished - noisy room - no air conditioning - almost no light in the bathroom - no soap for the bathtub - restaurant looks really old; in fact everything (except for the exterior) looks really old - payed 125EUR for a 50-60EUR location - price and location totally overrated; I don't understand what is going on with Maastricht area, everything is overrated and it definitely isn't worth the money
Review 31:- good location, close to train station; short trip to Maastricht - nice garden - free parking
Review 32:We had a very noisy room (road)
Review 33:Hotel has a very good location. Excellent garden where you can spend some time. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Very big parking for cars.
Review 34:the rooms were old, the curtains were ugly and felt from the topic when we tried to close them. Reception girl couldn't count, it took a long while before we had our key. The hotel really needs a make over.
Review 35:The garden is beautiful.
Review 36:Extremely rude receptionist when i arrived on the afternoon of Saturday 5 July (around 5pm) wanted me to pay before I had even seen my room - and told me it wasn't normal to want to see what I was paying for first. In the end she let me take a look but told me I had to be back in 2 minutes!! ie I was treated like a criminal (again - this is becoming common practice in hotels) - I told her she could come with me if she wanted, but she declined my offer. I asked her what she was worried I would do…no answer to that question either. When I checked the bill on my print out compared to the bill she wanted me to pay there was a difference in the city tax - mine said 1.67euros +/- and hers said 2.50 euros - she was insisting I paid the 2.50 euros and not the amount stated on the print out and the conditions I had come to the hotel under. I decided I was not prepared to do this and I do believe that someone working for the hotel was standing near the reception talking to someone else when I decided to tell her I was paying the city tax mentioned on my print out and not the newly introduced city tax (especially after the way I had been treated, anyone would have forgotten I was paying almost 70 euros for the pleasure). Funnily enough (and undoubtedly because there was a witness) she agreed – with extremely bad grace. What a DREADFUL ‘welcome’!!!! I wouldn’t have minded returning to this hotel but with staff like this and treatment like this when it is the ‘hospitality’ industry – a service; I deserved a smile and polite professional behaviour in return for my almost 70 euros – shocking.
Review 37:very spacious hotel, great location, price ok for holland but could be a bit cheaper. huge breakfast included.
Review 38:Not really suited to our group, the hotel facilities are dated, the restaurant more suited for catering for large numbers of coach parties. Had to purchase tokens to get drinks!!, bar personnel not too helpful.
Review 39:Car Parking was free..
Review 40:By closing doors are loud, carpet in the rooms and unventilated cage of a staircase
Review 41:Oend minded, good service, kind people and facilities and rooms very comfortable
Review 42:Bathroom is outdated and with strong chlorine smell
Review 43:Good location. Close to city centre and good parking facilities

Review 69:WiFi did not work For drinks with dinner you had to buy tokens
Review 70:noisy rooms bedsheets to warm need to buy coins for use at the bar
Review 71:location
Review 72:I don't like to be extra charged for using a Creditcard. The way they helped me at the desk mkes that I never will come to this hotel again.
Review 73:The token and prepaid system
Review 74:Very friendly
Review 75:Old fashioned rooms
Review 76:Restaurant service at night, bar area, lack of facilities in the room
Review 77:Grounds, location, service we received for an early breakfast, cleanliness.
Review 78:nothing wrong, just needed little update.
Review 79:Great location only 5 minutes walk to town.Great value evening meal @ 19.50 euros.Really secure parking for cars & especially motorcycles.very clean
Review 80:Great value for money, Very good breakfast, Should've booked for an evening meal, The beer tokens worked well & no problem cashing in next day,,,,,,
Review 81:Don't have a cash bar and have to buy tokens from reception. Room on the small side but ok for us as only crashing there for one night. Don't spend time at any hotel in Valkenberg! Go out and see it!!
Review 82:Nice friendly staff, fairly basic but in good order rooms. Valkenberg is an amazing town, a must see place. Helpful and gave us early breakfast. Free parking.
Review 83:Very poor wi-fi service in both the rooms and common areas. As we read the newspaper via internet, this was a detractor.
Review 84:The staff was very helpful with looking up information on the city's sites. The lawn is exceptional--we really enjoyed relaxing with a cocktail.
Review 85:the breakfast - it was a buffet breakfast with a fair amount of choice but no decent teas and really nothing i fancied eating. disappointing. could be a bit cheaper...
Review 86:location, hotel in general.
Review 87:Fantastic gardens, lovely breakfast and fantastic location, we were going to see Andre rieu in maastrict and chose this hotel so we could see valkenburg too, so glad we did.
Review 88:In order to get a coffee or a drink or anything you had to buy tokensfrom reception which you then use in the bar/snack bar, you couldnot use your credit card, or charge it to your just found it off puttingwhen all I wanted was a coffee I would have to go to reception to buythese tokens
Review 89:Lovely garden with chairs and tables where you had waiter servicefrom the bar etc, very friendly and helpful staff, room very cleanand well laid out
Review 90:Credit Card Surcharge.
Review 91:Location, close to railway station (they also have parking) and only ashort walk from the centre. At the time I went they had a reduced rate so, even though it was a standard room and nothing flash, it was value for money. It would be overpriced if I'd payed the rate now on Booking.com and their website.
Review 92:The hotel uses a token system for buying drinks at the bar. 30 tokensfor 18 Euros. This means each token is worth 1.66 Euro or £1.35.Therefore if you want to know what you are paying for drinks you need todo the maths.
Review 93:1) The excellent price2) The hotel is only 5 minutes walk from the centre of Valkenburg 3) large car park which is protected by security gates. The gates being operated by hotel staff.
Review 94:The bar was not a cash bar, but required tokens.
Review 95:The breakfasts were exceptionally good. The room was comfortable for a single occupant. (It would be small for a couple shating). It is very convenient for the station.
Review 96:While the bathroom was updated, the room itself could have used afacelift, and better lighting in the room would have been nice(especially in the bathroom!!). With no air circulation, the room washot and stuffy at night - a ceiling fan could have helped. Would haveliked a hot pot in the room for morning coffee, as breakfast didn'tbegin until 8, and while the staff was kind enough to allow me to grab acup before that time, it would have been desirable to have been able toeither make it in the room or have breakfast start at 7.
Review 97:Beautiful well-maintained grounds, very pleasant staff, excellentlocation away from the noise of the town center but only a short walkaway. Very nice breakfast (included in our room price), and ample securecar parking.
Review 98:I don't really like the drink token idea - if you're staying in the hotel you should be able to run up a normal bill. The room was clean but some of the furniture was shabby and my room needed a refit.
Review 99:The bar staff were very accomodating and kept the bar open till late as I was with friends from Amsterdam. Overall the staff were friendly and efficient
