Reviews for The Villa Backpackers Lodge
Review 1:Room was right next to the kitchen and a bathroom so it was very loud and the curtains were so thin the light from the bathroom would shine into our room every time it was used during the night. Also, there seemed to be a staff area outside our room, with the staff talking so loudly it sounded as though they were in our room - not a very private or comfy feeling! Given the noise, we had a terrible sleep.
Review 2:The hot tub and the location.
Review 3:Info for guests arriving on late Ferry re access to kitchen there were no water mugs or glasses in our room and no way of accessing them We found out in the morning that our room key should have fitted kitchen but there was no instructons to do this.Web site needs to be updated regarding tarriff or we were over charged.
Review 4:Close to Ferry when arriving at 11.30pm
Review 5:The duvet cover looked a bit manky (like not really washed.. it had a small blood stain on it like someone had their period on it) Otherwise the rest of the room seemed clean enough as well as the rest of the room.
Review 6:Really cute outside (with fairy lights at night), friendly staff showing us around, the room was really nice Otherwise the sheets seemed clean enough as well as the rest of the room.
Review 7:I emailed in advance to make sure I'd be able to make the 1.30 wine tour off my ferry as my schedule was tight. Reception said it should be fine. When I arrived the woman told me I was too late and had no information on how I would get to the queen Charlotte track. I rang the wine tour company myself and they said it was no problem to pick me up. I feel reception could have tried a bit harder with this!
Review 8:Free apple pie every night, nice hot tub. Kitchen and rooms clean and comfortable.
Review 9:I didn't have a great view but it was comfortable.
Review 10:A lovely old building close to everything. A friendly atmosphere. It was clean and I got the room I wanted. A nice little backpackers. We had apple crumble which was provided by the staff.
Review 11:A little difficult to locate reception; particularly for a late checkin.
Review 12:Value for money, good amenities on a budget. Ideally located close to the Ferry drop off
Review 13:If you want to meet people, hang out, and live on a budget this place is awesome. Everything is there. Knowledgablebstaff, great hub for Abel Tasman and nelson area, and great facilities.
Review 14:Wifi sometimes didn't work in the room (I was in the "depandance"). The lamp on my bed was without bulb.
Review 15:Free shuttle bus from Interislander ferry. Friendly staff. Free Wifi. Despite the huge number of guests it was quite quiet, good soundproofing.
Review 16:the room was super cold (there was a heater only), the staff was not very helpful regarding food requirements or needs (we were just asking some information)
Review 17:Free wifi, location, kitchen, outdoor facilities, nice house, lounge
Review 18:Nothing at all!
Review 19:I loved the place. Close to the bus stop and easy to get around. Lovely staff and people around. Cozy room. Nice breakfast and espacially loved the apple crumble.
Review 20:did not like the door handle that is hard to open when want to go out of the room.
Review 21:I like that we step off the bus and walk strait into their door step. Very well situated.
Review 22:It gets quite cold if the staff doesn't put more wood in the fireplace to prevent the house to get cold during the night
Review 23:Free apple crumble every night! Location, sitting room with fireplace, staff
Review 24:I didn't fine the staff very friendly and there was no induction on check in I.e. info on rules or layout. While the common rom was lovely and warm at night the rest of the hostel was very cold. Personally I also wasn't a big fan of the kitchen being in the middle of the common room, especially when something was burnt. Plug sockets are limited so charging cameras etc can be a bit of a rat race, then add that some of the socets have timers too (none of which was explained at check in and was instead passd guest to guest).
Review 25:The location was the big plus for this hostel, although for travels on foot there is a very steep hill to climb from the I-Site. I really liked the log fire in the common area as well as the lounging cats. I also really liked how eco-friendly this hostel was. The view on a clear day from the balcony wasnfabulous as well.
Review 26:staff didn't mention about free dessert time so I miss. The front door was locked before 8am and no way to open and back to the house.
Review 27:friendly staff warm atmosphere accommodation
Review 28:friendliness of staff, Free WiFi, accessability to ferries, lovely old house, grounds, hot tub, separate units, quiet, big kitchen, could leave bags there while hiking.
Review 29:If I was to be very picky - could be useful for more power sockets in the room
Review 30:Felt like I was staying at someone's house. Very nice homely feel. Lovely garden space. Free wifi. Comfy beds. Bedside lamp. Big, airy rooms with high ceilings. Sink in the bedroom.
Review 31:Decor is quite old and tatty, which was fine by me, but the bedding really could do with replacing. Though perfectly clean, some of it is very old, worn and/or stained.
Review 32:Quirky, friendly hostel in a good location for the ferry and town. Good kitchen facilities, nice big living room, and good, fast and FREE wifi. Staff are v helpful and also willing to do runs to the ferry when needed. I also liked the fact there were plugs next to every dorm bed.
Review 33:The second night some guys were listening to loud music and nobody stopped them (we had to get up early for the ferry)
Review 34:The walking distance to the ferry. The location - very good from Nelson. Free parking near by.
Review 35:Staff behind reception desk were slightly over-stretched on occasion and unable to answer questions (this may be unavoidable due to "peak hour" when lots of people arrive from the bus or ferry). But they were able to enlist the help of other informal staff / long-term guests to show me how things worked, so was not a problem. Hostel is on main road (State Highway 1) and next to railway crossing, so noise may disturb light sleepers, but was no problem for me.
Review 36:My room was comfortable, very clean and good value for money (NZD 82 per night for an en-suite twin room). Facilities were good and well-organised. Hot spa was pleasant after a long day's walking. Kitchen, lounge (with book exchange) and outdoor seating areas also very good. Location is great in the centre of Picton, close to all pubs, restaurants, supermarkets etc. The Intercity bus stops right outside and the ferry terminal (& car hire office) is 5 mins walk. Reception stays open until the evening bus from Christchurch arrives, even if it is late.
Review 37:Lots of flies in kitchen all the time They had a tv room but they hired it out as a room which was abit annoying.
Review 38:Friendly helpful staff Nice rooms and very clean and homey Lots of room to sit and relax Free bike hire!
Review 39:the room was quite small given the amount of beds, there weren't enough showers for all the people staying at the hostel.
Review 40:The Wi-Fi was really good, worked so well and was free which is unusual in New Zealand. The place was very nice with a good outside area and well located
Review 41:Comfortable room and bed. Friendly helpful staff. Enjoyed chatting in the kitchen - lots of young folk from overseas - enjoying our lovely country. Would love to stay again.
Review 42:A little noisy until 10 pm or so but quietened down after that until some girls came back about 12:30 and were talking very loudly outside the room. Asked nicely if they could keep it down and they happily went off to bed.
Review 43:Huge kitchen, dining and lounge to share. Plenty of facilities ie: bathrooms, laundry etc. Room large with lovely bay window, comfy bed and our own little handbasin. Easy walk to foreshore, shops and ferry.
Review 44:inconsiderate fellow travellers socialising loudly opposite our bedroom long after midnight on a Sunday
Review 45:the character and charm of the house, the gardens, the green sustainable approach, cleanliness, friendly late-night welcome and assistance to find our room
Review 46:I checked in late in the night , the front woman waited for me and welcome with smile ,and useful information especially ice cream and cake that can release the exhaustion from the long journey CHC to Picton. Thank you

Review 49:Little heaven on Earth, the best hostel we have visited so far. Very comfortable and cozy place, clean and nice. Splendid apple crumble with ice cream like a bonus :) We stayed for only one night but could imagine to be there for a month.
Review 50:The bathrooms were outside (so it was cold when going back to room) The front door remained closed some times so that it was toilsome to go out side of the Hostel without a friend together.
