Reviews for Villa Varenna

Review 1:?

Review 2:The staff greeted us with wine, spoke fluent English, was highly knowledgeable about the area, including a list of the best restaurants with every different type of dining experience. They had balconies on the property up high to take in the panoramic views, and the magnificent sunset. Also private parking, which is a premium in the area.

Review 3:We did not mind but the train station is just out front. The trains are not a problem but they have a bell that rings for about 5 mins before each train arrives. That could be annoying but we live by a train at home so we didn't really care.

Review 4:This was a wonderful location to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere or the lake. Super great to have our own veranda for an afternoon bottle of wine and snack. The breakfast was wonderful as well.

Review 5:The opening to get into the shower is no more than a foot wide. We are not big people at all but we had to turn sideways to get in and out which was still tight.

Review 6:The location worked nicely for us because it is a little out of town and it gave us made us privacy and still be close to town. The train station is just across the way but not a problem for us at all. The view of the lake from our room was magnificent! Buddy was very helpful.

Review 7:Misleading location - walking distance to Varenna, not in town. Attic room had ridiculous low ceiling I bumped my head repeatedly even though I thought I was hunched over enough! Suitable for single person only. Bathroom also ridiculously small with zero toiletries - not even shower soap. Balcony advertised not available in rainy weather - instead we ate skimpy breakfast in the kitchen with no ambience. No lounge room for inclement weather - kitchen had no music or games or even pleasant art work on walls if stuck inside. We have stayed in boutique hotels all over Europe and this place is over priced by double. Discussed all of above with on duty person but all he said was that it costs more during the summer months!

Review 8:It is near Varenna. If you travel by train, the train station is handily between you and the view of the lake.

Review 9:The Villa itself is lovely, situated on the hill just above the train station. Our room had a good view of the lake and had its own sitting area. The room was quite spacious and comfortable. It is a small place, and was not staffed full time, meaning we could not find anyone to pay when we left (the owner called later, so we did work it out).

Review 10:The bed I slept in was a bit uncomfortable...took a cab from the train station to VV (which I had planned to do as it is difficult to take suitcases up the winding hill road)- the driver charged a minimum of 10 Euros for a 2 minute drive.

Review 11:The host Buddy and his wife made an awesome breakfast for us! Buddy was very helpful and accomodating - very warm and friendly! Our room was very nice and our terrace and view was awesome! Perfect location in Varenna! The place is beautiful!

Review 12:In-room heater never got warm enough. Train station 200 yards away. Trains stop at about 22:00 but start early morning. Not loud but noticeable.

Review 13:Lack of throngs of tourists, balcony, on hand staff, English, view, nearby parking.

Review 14:Location was close to train station but street to get there was 2 lanes with no sidewalk, curvy and cars came around the corners quickly. At night we used a flash light to alert cars we were on the road.

Review 15:NIce breakfast and very pleasant staff. Helped carry bags up and down the stairs.

Review 16:The walk up from the ferry station, although only a few blocks, was partly along a rode with no shoulder and speeding cars. Once you got there, the location was quiet. Train noise was not a problem for us.

Review 17:The manager, Buddy, was very personable and helpful. Breakfast prepared by Buddy and his wife was excellent.

Review 18:Had to find. Just up the hill from the train station. you can park your car at the train station and walk up the hill - about .2 of a mile or so. We dropped our luggage and the front gate, then parked the car.

Review 19:Loved the hotel, and the staff. Room was big and nicely appointed. Great shower - has it's own hot water heater!!! Excellent breakfast as well!!!

Review 20:Bed was slightly firm for our tastes. Parking at the train station was close but on site parking is always preferred.

Review 21:Delightful staff. Charming B&B. Nice hot breakfast everyday. Our room was on the ground floor and quite spacious.

Review 22:The Villa is just up from the train station. The walk is slightly hilly and there is not a sidewalk, but it makes this extremely convenient for those traveling with suitcases. Mauro and his team are great hosts. Breakfast was freshly prepared each morning and the restaurant recommendations in Varenna were spot on. We stayed on the second floor and despite prior reviews were not at all bothered by the train. Our view was incredible and made for great photos. Access to the fridge was a plus after a trip to the grocery for some beer and water.

Review 23:One bathroom on the 4th floor was hard to get in because of the glass wall

Review 24:Buddy & Janet were awesome! We enjoyed their company & helpfulness! They cooked a wonderful breakfast every morning!

Review 25:Location above train station was noisy. Bed was so hard, with no box spring that we only got a few hours sleep each of the two nights we stayed. Tub had shower attachment but no curtain or glass to or event water going everywhere, making showers very inconvenient and potentially unsafe. Only one very flat pillow with poor support. Temperature seemed uncontrollable with no instructions. Froze each night.

Review 26:Owner is a real peach, trying to serve every customer's needs. Breakfast was good. Balcony was neat, but only accessible through the bathroom. Wierd. Renovated bathroom looks fabulous.

Review 27:Villa Varenna was well located, a few minutes walk from town and the train station. Our room was on the ground floor, and was large, well appointed, and had great views over Lake Como. Breakfast was good ad the staff welcoming and helpful.

Review 28:Cost about the same as Villa Cipressi in townbut Cipressi offered luxury & gorgeous gardens

Review 29:Pretty garde & entrance but the hotel is above the train station, so the train stops do create some noise Also, the hotel is not very close to the harbor or coast promenade where the action is The first room we were shown was cosy & pretty but way up top, so we rejected it The room we ended up in was on the first floor, convenient but more utilitarian. It needed real bedside lamps, not just shades with bulbs! The bed was too low for older folks like us, but comfortable Badi, the concierge, was terrific He fixed us a grrrreat breakfast & told us a lot about local life, restaurants, etc

Review 30:Wifi was a little slow

Review 31:Buddy and his wife Janet took amazing care of us while we stayed at the villa . Breakfast was delicious every morning which started with a bowl of fresh cut of fruit . The location to the ferries was ideal.

Review 32:Minimal food supplies availble for purchase in the town, so be prepared to eat out for all meals

Review 33:Great location near railway station, and a short walk to centre of Varenna. Helpful staff, a leisurely breakfast on the terrace, comfortable room with spacious bathroom, and terrific views. We had the annex which was accessed from outside the building which was convenient. Take a torch when walking on the road at night.

Review 34:For those who have commented on train noise, it was minimal and did not interfere at all with either sleeping or the atmosphere.

Review 35:Absolutely breathtaking views. Courteous, friendly proprietor and wonderful staff. A shout out to Buddy! Breakfast was perfect. Would stay at Villa Varenna again.

Review 36:The hotmail is located next to the train station so noisy in the morning. Better not to have the room downstairs as it might be more noisy

Review 37:Huge and comfortable bedroom Delicious breakfast prepared by the staff Kindness of the staff

Review 38:One room was to be garden view. We got a 3rd floor attic. Kill spiders. Cold water shower. And, worst of train station within 100' with noise morning to night. Very hard to locate.

Review 39:Other 2 rooms OK and view OK. Manager "Buddy" was excellent

Review 40:gorgeuos view of Lake Como- it was wonderful to have breakfast on the terrace each morning , overlooking the lake and all the beautiful houses, villas, flowers, etc. The staff were friendly, courteous and extremely helpful- they even did our laundry for us .

Review 41:its not a hotel its a building. hard to find, adjacent to the railway station. No lobby, no one to talk if you need something unless you meet Buddy. Simple room, nothing is in the room as advertised.Broken chair, tiny shower, no shelf to put things in shower. terrible noise ehrn you open the water for shower.terrible internt. Dangerouse way to walk to town-no pavement!!!

Review 42:Buddy the only guy that operate the place is wonderful.

Review 43:Location is about a 10 min walk to Varenna, not necessarily a bad thing except at night the lighting is not great so use a flashlight app on your phone so cars can see you.

Review 44:Buddy was so nice and accommodating. I also loved the location of our room having an outdoor entrance separate from the rest of the population. The owner Mauro always answered my emails quickly. Highly recommend!

Review 45:Worst hotel on Lake Como. No soap (except bubble bath....NO Tub to usebubble bath soap). Train noise 24/7, No hotel staff could be found. No breakfast. Waited for one hour trying to locate anyone with thehotel,...No response. Only parking was at train station. If your lookingfor the worst hotel in Italy, this is it !!!

Review 46:Absolutely nothing. Overpriced for what is available in town.Inconvenient location.

Review 47:Not marked well, so VERY had to find. Located on a steep hill with no parking. Had to walk up/down this steep hill to get to town, very dangerous after dark. For older people, this is not the place for you!

Review 48:View was great from our balcony, but it actually overlooked the train station below as well. Room was small, but adequate. Breakfast was very nicely served.

Review 49:Staff were really accommodating. They let us drop off our bags early so we could enjoy our day fully. Nice decor, beautifully clean and lovely views. It's really close to the train station which was a bonus for us.

Review 50:Directions to find place. We didn't realize it was just above railway station about 2mins away. Turn left when out of station, down stairs, round corner up the hill, on left.

Review 51:Lovely room, bathroom & views, very helpful owner.

Review 52:Breakfast was nice but limited and the bedroom could be a little more modern but nothing to grumble about really.

Review 53:Very welcoming reception on arrival and was looked after during our stay. Room had a nice big bathroom that led out to a large terrace with lovely views. Also close to train station.

Review 54:Despite the fact it overlooks the station, noise was minimal and the location of Villa Varenna suited us just fine. Away from the maddening crowd but just short walk to the ferries and restaurants etc, the views from the windows and terrace excellent. (Ill Binario cafe at the station first rate) Staff were ever so helpful.

Review 55:The hotel is above the railroad station, and there is noise from the trains.

Review 56:The views from the room are outstanding. The room itself was well appointed. Comfortable bed.

Review 57:If you have a hard time with stairs, there is no elevator. And it requires many stairs navigating from train station and then walking uphill to hotel unless you get a taxi, which seems silly for so short a distance...but...

Review 58:The views are stunning and the rooms are modernized, comfortable and large. There is a beautiful terrace with many fragrant flowers where you can sit and relax and take in the views. If you stay here, ask about making dinner reservations at Il Caminetti. That experience was unforgettable.

Review 59:It would be nice if they offered a pick up / drop off service - at least when it's raining.

Review 60:The room was lovely with a huge bathroom and a big outdoor terrace. Views over the lake from both the bedroom and the terrace. Breakfast was delightful and plentiful.

Review 61:The hill after too much wine though that was our fault

Review 62:Exceptional staff Buddy ensured we got a great table at La Vista restaurant and showed us a great way to go to both Milan and Como and get back in time. Bed really comfortable breakfast lovely a really lovely place. Mauro your staff are great too

Review 63:Wi-Fi was not working at all in our room on the top floor, had to go downstairs to connect. Our room was advertised as with panoramic view - it was a small window to the garden. Our friend's room was much better and larger with the lake view as advertised and only costed 20 euros more than ours. But they had an issue with the shower - it was impossible to squeeze into it thru a very small opening.

Review 64:Location, breakfast, cleanniness, staff, service, parking nearby.

Review 65:Wifi did not reach our room on the top floor. No iron. Our EU adapters didn't fit. Breakfast was minimal.

Review 66:The room overall was great. Lovely bed, storage space for clothes, great shower room. Service was good. Very helpful.

Review 67:10 min walk to Varenna. Balcony had a nice lake view but also looks at the train station. No shampoo or soap provided. No umbrella for the terrace/balcony which made the area pretty useless in the heat. WiFi signal did not reach our room. There was a strong signal in the breakfast room. Parking costs 10E per night and you have to park the car at the train station. Not very romantic. If you aren't planning on staying in the room much then this is a good option. If you are looking for romantic looks elsewhere. The sound of the trains never bothered us with the windows closed.

Review 68:Air conditioning was very important. Staff were very friendly.

Review 69:the clothesline with dirty clothes the train noise was slightly irritating

Review 70:the view from our room upon waking up was lovely, the breakfast was simple & elegant, staff was nice and helpful, location in varenna is perfect walking distance from boat and train

Review 71:The location of the property is in front of the train station and 10' walk to the center of town. No choice and little breakfast No toiletries Weak WIFI signal

Review 72:Nice room with comfortable beds. There is a nice terrace but the weather was not great, so no time to enjoy it. The place is very clean and the manager very helpful.

Review 73:The villa was lovely with great views of Lake Como. Buddy and Janet were delightful and made the delicious breakfasts interesting and most enjoyable. When I return to Lake Como the only place I will stay will be in Varenna at Villa Varenna!

Review 74:We were in the room adjacent to the kitchen where breakfast was served. On our first morning a couple of guests were in the kitchen from just after 8am and it was very noisy in our room - as if they were having breakfast in the room with us!

Review 75:Very nice staff, great setting with deck chairs with a view of the lake.

Review 76:The bathroom was a bit small and it was a bit hard to find a suitable place to hang towels and clothes. The ceiling in the attic room was a bit low on the side that slanted and we had to be careful about bumping our heads against it. Also, if you are not so tall, it can be difficult to see the view from the skylight in the attic room. But otherwise, it is a very good view.I managed to see it only because I was able to place my camera on the ledge of the skylight and take a shot from there. :)

Review 77:The location. Good breakfast with fresh fruit and yoghurt and freshly baked rolls. Buddy supplied us with two big bottles of water every day as the grocery shops were a bit far. He also kindly arranged for me to have an adaptor with which I was able to charge my mobile phone. Plentiful hot water in the shower. Good Heating.

Review 78:The room on the main floor was directly across from the kitchen and next to the front door so we heard everything.

Review 79:The staff was nice and the place very clean. Good breakfast!

Review 80:Villa Varenna was an excellent choice for a short stay in the Lake Como region. The room was small but beautifully presented & the private terrace had a stunning view over the lake. Easy walking distance from both the rail station and village centre. Buddy (the manager?) was always cheerful & helpful. The breakfast was freshly prepared & delicious.

Review 81:because of the proximity to the train station, you can hear the sound very early in the morning. I am a light sleeper so this was a bit of a problem for me

Review 82:This is even better than other hotels we've stayed in. The room was huge with an awesome view of the lake. breakfast was very good and the staff was very helpful. Location is literally across the station, varenna esina

Review 83:In the bathroom was very cold, don't know the reason, but because we where one of the first ones staying there after renovation it could be that radiator it didn't heat up.

Review 84:Nice newly re-done Villa. Good kitchen facilities, deliciouse breakfast (except one time croissants where a bit burnt). Comfortable bed. Beautiful view! Nice people! :-)

Review 85:The bathroom had mold on the ceiling and it was freezing cold in the room. Also from our room we could hear all the noise from the kitchen, so sleeping in in the morning is not an option, nor having a nap.

Review 86:The location is good.

Review 87:- Little bit of train noise due to the proximity to the train station. On the positive side, trains don't run all night.

Review 88:- Great view of the lake/Alps from our room (large windows) - Owner: Mauro very friendly/helpful with answering questions and recommendations. He emailed us prior to our travels to confirm and check in. - Very clean and spacious rooms - Nice breakfast both mornings

Review 89:Not well signed so difficult to find and parking off site in station car park. Proximity of railway station - though this could be a positive if travelling by train!

Review 90:Very helpful owner. Fairly easy to get into town for restaurants, Good view over lake

Review 91:Bed was very hard

Review 92:Location just across street from train station and close to waterfront dining and activities Owner/host was helpful, friendly, and full of information Great views from room terrace Charming home and yard

Review 93:The electricity in our room was somewhat temperamental. Wifi only in certain locations, best in the kitchen. Nothing was really problematic, however.

Review 94:The host and his family were wonderful! They hosted a special birthday celebration for my husband, provided two homemade cakes, and shared dinner with us. We had a delightful stay despite less than ideal lake weather. We would highly recommend this b&b to travelers looking for a terrific host and pleasant accommodations. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Lake Como.

Review 95:Biggest problem was need to walk on highway for a long block with no sidewalk. Most of the town has no cars but this B&B is on one of the access roads. Bathtub/shower had curtain, so mopping up water daily

Review 96:Excellent and available host, recently updated rooms, good breakfasts, outstanding views

Review 97:Being a B&B, bath soap is not supplied, so make sure you bring some. Other than that....a wonderful spot!

Review 98:Varenna a is a lovely, peaceful town, just what we needed after a couple of weeks full of sight seeing and full days. Villa Varenna was in a perfect location, close to they train station but high up to allow for a beautiful lake view from our room. The Villa is beautifully done, very clean and very comfortable. Our host was charming, informative and very helpful. While some complain of noise from the early morning train, it did not bother us. The room was quiet and comfortable. The continental Breakfast varied daily, but always fresh, tasty and satisfying

Review 99:No choice at breakfast

Review 100:Varenna is beautiful with lots of great places to eat. It's a perfect base on Lake Como. The guest house itself is very nice. The owner is a very helpful, friendly man with very good English. The kitchen isn't really for use by guests, just for breakfast. I would highly recommend this place!

Review 101:Villa Varenna is directly above the town's train station and since there's no air conditioning we had to have our windows open. It was pretty noisy until after 11 pm. It's also a pretty steep hike up to the Inn. You have to walk on the side of a fairly busy road, through a tunnel and up a steep set of stairs. At night there is no light to guide you. It's an adventure. The WiFi is pretty good as long as you are sitting directly beside the router. We couldn't get it at all in our room.

Review 102:Train station sits between hotel and lake. Wasn't an issue, but not my favorite feature either.

Review 103:We had a great stay at Villa Varenna. Everything was beautiful and very clean. Host is very friendly and accomodating. Villa sits about 5-10min.walk from lakeside but takes no time to walk the beautiful streets to the heart of Varenna. Rooms have great view of the lake. Very comfortable stay!

Review 104:It was so beautiful, comfortable, paradise-like that it was almost impossible to leave. We hated to have to board the train to head home. This was a dreamlike property, just as described in Conde Noste Travel.

Review 105:Superb view of the beauty of Lake Come. Excellent two block walk to the ferry and town with restaurants and shopping. Literally 100 feet from the train station. Location could not have been more convenient.

Review 106:Room was a bit bare, needed floor rug or some other soft furnishings to make it more appealing. Bed was quite hard. Could hear everything from room upstairs and the trains directly below the window. Not good for light sleepers!

Review 107:Great view, really good breakfast & modern bathroom.

Review 108:We stayed in a baloney rm. Not enough places to hang towels in bath. No place to put soap in shower. But these are just minor issues.

Review 109:Location was perfect. Host was fabulous, and so helpful with everything, as this was our first visit. Great dinner recommendations. ONG get ready.

Review 110:Unfortunately the room overlooks the train station and although the trains are not frequent, it's a bit noisy when one passed through. Due to the thick stone walls of the house, wifi is unreliable, we weren't able to connect at all.

Review 111:My girlfriend and I stayed for one night at Villa Varenna. The location is very convenient, only 5 - 10min walk from Varenna's town center and ferry port. The room is very clean and comfortable, and a very nice breakfast is served.

Review 112:Our room (no.2) did not have a shower, just a bath. This is just a personal preference and others staying at Villa Varenna may be quite happy with a bath.

Review 113:Owner was very friendly and helpful, and allowed us to have a late check out on the day we left. He was also very good at replying to my e-mails during the booking process and leading up to our arrival. Breakfasts were excellent. Good views from the rooms with balconies. Close to railway station, just a short walk up the hill. Also only a 10 minute walk downhill to the ferry wharf and cafes. Overall, the stay at Villa Varenna was relaxing and enjoyable.

Review 114:Fluffier pillows would be nice.

Review 115:We love Varenna and Villa Varenna was a nice place to stay. If you are arriving by train, it is literally just across the tracks and up a hill. If you are able bodied, there is no problem. We feared the trains would keep us awake but the owner has installed good sound and light proofing shades so our sleep was good. Great access to the town and ferry system.

Review 116:We chose this villa because we were travelling by train. It is right above the station and easy to get to with luggage. The view from our personal terrace was amazing as were the breakfasts. If you are a very light sleeper the noise from the trains may be an issue. I however slept very well and only woke at around 7.30am as a train went through.

Review 117:Train station right in front of villa making announcements until midnight and trains squeek to a halt. No bother during the day but annoying when trying to sleep.

Review 118:Host is very nice and accommodating. Easy short walk to town. Gorgeous views of the lake. I would certainly recommend this place for others.

Review 119:Bad Wi Fi in room, train station very close might be a problem if you're a light sleeper, on the steep side of the road so hilly and steep to get to. Car parking over the road, not at hotel.

Review 120:Good friendly host, room clean and fresh, bed comfy. Close enough to walk to square and restaurants, about 10 min. Nice view from window or outdoor terrace.

Review 121:The shower is one that you have to kneel in the bath and use but we soon got used to it.

Review 122:We loved this Villa; Mauro and his wife made it feel like home, we even used Mauro's car parking space. The Villa has been refurbish to a high standard. We payed for a room with a patio with views over the lake and we are glad we did as it was a great area to relax in the sun with a glass of wine.

Review 123:I felt the room lacked some necessities, such as basics in the bathroom (soap, shampoo) and perhaps a chair for one's suitcase. Coffee / tea making facilities in the room would also greatly add to the experience. The wifi in our room was very weak. These are minor aspects that can easily be changed though.

Review 124:Varenna is beautiful and Villa Varenna is a really pretty house renovated and sitting just above the station. The room was spacious and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly, with the village only a short walk away.

Review 125:Nothing!!!!!

Review 126:Everything!!!!! The lovely and very welcoming owners, the spectacular views of Lake Como, the location (a short and very pleasant walk into Varenna), the private terrace, the immaculate apartment, the yummy breakfast, thank you so much Villa Varenna for a perfect holiday :)

Review 127:What a breath of fresh air, literally, to stay at Villa Varenna for one evening after spending 10 days in the larger cities of Italy. We will definitely be back for a longer stay in the future.

Review 128:It is located close to the rail station so you will hear the trains however they stop at a reasonable time each night and as we travelled throughout Italy by train we liked the fact we could walk to the station.

Review 129:What makes Villa Varenna a wonderful place to stay? The wonderful views of the lake, the easy walking distance to everything and the clean, comfortable rooms. However we would go back again because of the charming hosts. Mauro should have his own comedy TV show. His wonderful sense of humour combined with a fabulously expressive face had us laughing at each breakfast and enjoying many conversations. His lovely wife also made us feel so welcome every morning. Make sure you let them know what you like for breakfast each morning in advance.

Review 130:Breakfast was poor and wasnt much of a selection The view looks out over lake como, but train station right in front

Review 131:Fantastic service and nice clean and fresh rooms. Very modern Very friendly and helpful Terrace has amazing view Bathrooms all new and modern

Review 132:Good Bed Nice View of Lake Como

Review 133:My daughter and I loved it all from the gorgeous room to the delicious breakfasts.

Review 134:Good location, comfy beds, friendly staff, filling breakfast, amazing views from our room with terrace.

Review 135:Beautiful location, clean and cozy, good position, near a car parking and a train station. The staff was very kind and nice! I felt like at home!
