Reviews for Yunoshimakan
Review 1:No in room wifi
Review 2:The hotel is 68 years old. If you like history and old furnitures, this is the place to stay. Room is spacious and the one I have has good view facing the Gero area. The hotel is large with several blocks of buildings and we had spent some time to walk around to look for the historic locations of this hotel which is good game for family with kids. The Onsen is great and outdoor one is beautiful and kind of big.
Review 3:Perhaps due to the long history of the building, some facilities looked quite old
Review 4:The private hot bath room inside our room was fantastic and romantic! It gave us relax moment with the mountain view. The traditional hotel building itself is a hertiage, worths to stay!
Review 5:-If you want to walk in Gero downtown, after arrived the station leave your bag with the hotel shutter van before walk to the town. You must walk through the steep road from the town to the hotel otherwise, going back to the station and take the van (better check the van schedule) -The room on main building is look a little bit old.
Review 6:+Staff are very friendly even most of them can't speak English, but they try very hard to make you feel comfortable. + Dinner and Breakfast is very amazing.
Review 7:The place itself is a bit old which I think adds character.
Review 8:Located atop the mountain, the ryokan looks like an old temple. Very cheerful and friendly staff, delicious food served for breakfast and dinner, and fabulous outdoor baths. The rooms were clean and warm and the futons soft and comfortable. Quite a large establishment with Kareoke, billiards, a bar and restaurants inside as well of 4 private baths available for people who want privacy. A nice traditional Japanese experience.
Review 9:I want to own this ryokan/hotel.
Review 10:We had a fantastic experience, I would recommend this ryokan/hotel to anyone wanting a very Japanese experience. There was so much to do at the hotel we didn't want to go sightseeing. The baths were superb! Both private and public. If you get to them early in the morning or late at night you can have the bath completely to yourself. They also have stamps around the hotel that you can collect as you take in the various activities they have on offer.
Review 11:Traditional hotel with kinda old facilities. The room is old but service is great!I like the experience of dining in our room. Food is ok but not the top tier I would say. So.. Afterall I think u can get better choice elsewhere. But the nature surroundings is beautiful.
Review 12:If I had a criticism, it would unfortunately be the quality of the 'private baths' and indoor baths. They were quite average, compared to some truly breath-taking architecture that I've experienced in Nikko and Iwaki, Fukushima. It would have been nice if the private baths were wood and had a view - unfortunately, they looked like normal indoor bathroom and very dated tiles. We didn't use them because they really didn't appeal. We stayed for two nights, and in the mornings they provided a set breakfast again (not in the bedroom). As it was not in the bedroom, they could have provided a buffet style breakfast. I am not a fan of Japanese breakfast - having rice, salty fish and miso to start the day is not for me. I did not enjoy the breakfast for the first day as it was very salty and fishy. When I stayed at a Ryokan in Nagano, they provided a buffet breakfast with Japanese and Western options, which was much more satisfying. It would have been nice to be able to have some dairy products, such as fruit and yoghurt - as Hokkaido is famous for producing very high quality dairy, and Gero produces beautiful kaki.
Review 13:This location of this ryokan is absolutely perfect, perched on a quiet mountainside, with a small hiking trail behind it into the mountains. One of the main highlights is the Japanese dinner banquet brought to the room. The dinner is of the finest quality and showcases the best of Japanese cuisine. There must have been 23 courses, each beautifully presented with jawdropping artistry. The Japanese style bed is the most comfortable one I have slept in. I have had the pleasure of visiting a few ryokans over the last 12 months and this is where I had the best sleep. I'm very fussy when it comes to pillows and the ones they provided were perfect. I really liked that they allowed female guests to choose from a wide range of printed yukatas. A really nice personal touch. The main outdoor baths were very tranquil and were especially beautiful at night, when the mists would rise above the water. The toiletries provided were high quality - my hair and skin felt very nice from using their products. They also provided a foot massaging machine in the changing room which was very nice. I also experienced the massage service. The music choice was very soothing, and the technique of the masseur was very good. I don't like massages that are too strong, and she provided just the right pressure to provide a truly relaxing experience. The choice of scent of the oil was also very good. The staff at the ryokan were very attentive. My mother was very impressed that they memorised the room number for each guest and was able to fetch the right shoes for her, without her even having to say a word. We met a Nepalese man working at the Nepalese restaurant in Gero, and he said that he used to work at the Yunoshimakan. He couldn't speak anymore highly of the manager of the Ryokan. It's so lovely to hear a former employee speak so warmly of a former employer. It gives a good feeling to know that the staff love working there.
Review 14:Private outdoor bath was a bit small for two adults. I am a large guy (96Kg) but luckily my wife is small so we were just able to squeeze in.
Review 15:Nice old fashioned traditional accomodation and buildings. We booked a room with private outdoor bath so we could spend time together. The evening meal was served in the room by a kimono clad lady, the food was excellent and well presented. As we were celebrating our wedding aniversary they gave us a nice gift. Thanks for a very enjoyable stay.
Review 16:The common baths were very beautiful and the views from them as well as from the rooms were magnificent. Some parts of the hotel (less used ones?) were not in stellar condition but the most important ones, including common baths and rooms, were nicely kept and very clean.
Review 17:Some parts of the hotel was under construction, not really was an inconvenience, but the sight could look better.
Review 18:outdoor onsen with mountain views, staff who went out of their ways to make our stay the most memorable one. Their services came with a personal touch. Dinner served in our Japanese room was extravagant. Our Japanese room has breath taking views! Guests have to wear footwear provided by the hotel inside to keep their carpet spotlessly clean. Yes, we would love to come back one day
Review 19:The fantastic view in the rooms and the baths were brilliant! We even managed to have a fun karaoke night at the hotel - with a good mix of English/Japanese songs.
Review 20:The premises were huge - some parts such as the public hot springs were well maintained and clean, while others such as some part of the hallways, rooms, shared hot spring rooms, entertainment rooms, gardens were lacking proper maintenance and simply dated. We stayed in the room with the private outdoor onsen - the bath was actually a lot smaller than it looked in the pictures - it fit 2 people but we couldn't move much in the bath. It was in general a nice experience but we had expected a lot more for the price and the 5 stars.
Review 21:Free shuttle bus service connecting the ryokan and the train station. Friendly staff that spoke moderate English. Delicious traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast. Stunning outdoor public onsen (hot springs).
Review 22:mosquitoes or insect bites but still acceptable.. They do provide insecticide in the rooms though.
Review 23:We had a twin bed room with outdoor bath. It was spacious like a mini apartment. Tried the Public outdoor bath was beautiful too!
Review 24:This hotel was probably super luxurious back when it was built in around 1933, if i remember correctly. And it still has its charm and we had a great time here. But for the price we paid we expected muuuch more. We've stayed at 4 star Ryokans in Japan throughout our trip that costed half the money and were more luxurious, with nicer rooms, a nicer atmosphere and..wifi?!
Review 25:Friendliest and most caring staff ever. Beautiful public bath with views over the mountains.
Review 26:If can have wifi provided in room would score a full mark!
Review 27:The traditional building already a sight seeing. Comfy room, gorgeous meals, excellent staff.
Review 28:Building is already older therefore not 100% in best shape but therefore may even more charming.
Review 29:Dinner and breakfast have been delicious. Staff is really helpful and friendly. Overall a great experience. 2 things to recommend although it's than a bit pricey but it's worth: 1) make sure u also book dinner. It's delicious with many little things to try. And you will get it served in the room. 2) book a room with an Onsen in your room.
Review 30:A bit expensive. Nothing to see in the city. You just come here for the ryokan, nothing else.
Review 31:Very nice ryokan experience. Staff is very accommodating. There was a problem with our booking and the staff was kind enough to modify it. We enjoyed having dinner served in the room. Breakfast, served in the restaurant, is Japanese style but really good too.
Review 32:Nothing! Everything was just perfect!!
Review 33:Very nice staff, food, location, service and Onsen!! It was all good. Especially, staffs were sooooo considerable. Amazing :)
Review 34:It is recommended for those with car.
Review 35:The staff were very nice, thoughful and helpful, they even prepared a gift for celebrating my parents' wedding anniversary. Really sweet! The hotel was well-maintained and we loved the traditional historical Japanese style. The facilities and bed were great and comfortable. The breakfast was well-served. The public hot spring was supreme. To be concluded, this hotel was amazing and we would love to spend more days there.
Review 36:The ryokan itself was a beautiful old building and the staff were welcoming and attentive. It was a great experience sitting in an onsen looking out into the mountains. very peaceful.
Review 37:1.They did not allow to checkin even before 1 hour, even though we requested before while booking and we have been travelling with 6 month old baby. 2.They charged 2000 Yen for baby futon(bed arrangement),even though we asked it for our baby, they also charged 5000 Yen for cleaning the Futon, which was really surprising.
Review 38:Room with in house bath tub.
Review 39:the quilt is too short! dinner a little bit pricey
Review 40:located on top of the hill overlooking the town of Gero, room in new wing is very clean and spacious. size of private onsen tub in room is quite large,
Review 41:What wasn't to like?! The hotel shuttle service from the train station was a very useful and the check in staff at the hotel were quick and friendly. Ladies are asked to choose a kimono from a selection of patterns and then shown to the room with luggage. Tea is poured and some information given by the host. The dinner is served at a your choice, between 5:30-7pm, which is great if you've not long eaten. You really do need to be hungry as there is a lot to try! After dinner, the room is transformed in a matter of minutes and the futons are set out for bed. The hot spring facilities, both private and public, are kept very clean and were a great experience. Breakfast the following morning was huge and contained a large selection of traditional Japanese foods presented beautifully. Check out was quick and the shuttleback to the train station was punctual.
Review 42:We walked and looked around the hotel around 6.30 to 8 pm and found nobody or even staff to ask when we get loss. The place really looked like the ghost town. But I do understand later that it was dinner time so everybody is in the room but I expected some staffs at various spots.
Review 43:The place is typical Japanese. I can feel the luxury and glorious in the past. I enjoy the history of it. I really enjoy the outside, rooftop onsen.
Review 44:This beautiful hillside ryokan is a labrynth full of charm, great people, and wonderul onsen. Great for a couple. Probably not the most entertaining place for kids.
Review 45:Just wish there was two outside baths rather than one.
Review 46:The place is in a lovely setting, good was good, nice facilities. The staff were lovely and even drew me up a card to say congratulations on my wedding as I was there for my honeymoon.
Review 47:Being a Westerner, the breakfast was not totally to my liking - however it is important to try everything!
Review 48:Such beautiful surrounds, friendly staff and of course the onsens - highly recommended
Review 49:I stayed there for one night with my wife. This is an unforgettable experience with living in traditional japanese architecture that is located at jungle. Very nice scene no matter in your living room or public bath. Food is really good. Although it is pricey, this is still worth of money for a short stay and leisure.
Review 50:Arrived early. Was told could wait at lounge. For a ryokan of this status would expect at least a welcome drink. But was left to sit there
Review 51:Onsen water is great.
Review 52:For rooms that are a bit far from entrance, taking luggage walk all the way (few minutes) is no fun.
Review 53:We select gero onsen to catch the autumn leaves and we arrive at just the right time! The Hotel is so good in all aspect (and compare to all Onsen Ryokan I stayed this is among the top). Room, Food and facilities are all great! It is situated on a small hill and we feel the absolute quiet. Near the hotel just 5 minutes there is a temple to see the red leave in evening!
Review 54:Authentic Japanese hotel! Authentic and fantastic food! Definitely would recommend this hotel if you want to feel and live Japanese style for a couple of days.
Review 55:Nothing
Review 56:The room was amazing The breakfast was wonderful The Onsen was excellent Staff couldn't be better Free shuttle to and from train station Nice 10-15 min walk to town A little longer going back uphill Got to try out massage beds outside onsen

Review 79:Great ryokan, food, service and facilities. Free transport from Gero station.
Review 80:Property too rundown and needs refurbishment. Location not as convenient.
Review 81:The atmosphere is nice and relaxing
Review 82:Wonderful service and a beautiful Ryokan. I fully recommend this Ryokan to anyone wanting the full Japanese experience.
Review 83:Classical Japanese Style Resort
Review 84:The traditional way they run the resort and the fact it is in the woods away from everything.

Review 98:Very spacious room with private onsen. Sumptuous dinner. Excellent service.
Review 99:Nothing.
Review 100:Everything. The room, onsen, staff, cleaness, i will definetely recommend this place to anyone.
Review 101:wifi not strong enough even in Lounge
Review 102:Quiet, great mountain views, good traditional Japanese food, comfortable rooms
Review 103:the outdoor hotspring bath, the surroundings and the staff. I recommend to have dinner there, a wonderful experience!
Review 104:Good food ...best onsen..
Review 105:Great location, nice old part of building, huge trees and gardens. Fantastic staff and the people who whisk in to make your bed up where so good.Oh and the ladies who come to serve your dinner, well worth the money just for them and the great food.
Review 106:Check in time is 15.00 and chech out time is 10.00. Except packing and unpacking, we have a few time to enjoy and relax, for 1 day 1 night trip!
Review 107:Onzen spa water is great! Dinning and breakfast is fantastic!
Review 108:A bit difficult to find if you're coming by car. Onsen very nice but a little small compared to the overall building. No english speaking at the front desk (when we arrived, not speaking in general). Not flexible the timing they serve the dinner in the room
Review 109:very traditional building built in the nature. they do everything is possibile to make you feel a special guest. The silence, the room (we had the one with small private onsen in the room) but mostly the gardens is what we've appreciated the most. very traditional Dinner served in the room was just delicious. Automatic machine to buy very cheep snacks and beers at every floor. Really nice outdoor onsen.
Review 110:It seemed some areas were not maintained as well as others.
Review 111:Loved the experience of a traditional inn. It was so tranquil and you could see there was much grandeur in the past. The breakfast & dinner was very impressive and we appreciated the service. I would have liked to stay a second night!
Review 112:We stayed here as a part of the Takayama spring festival, and could not return the next day because we only stayed on of the already 2 night booking, due to the problem with booking.com. When you travell around and want to see as much as possible in 14 days you just want everything to work seamlessly and without any complications. This did not happen in this case.
Review 113:We had a somewhat of an odd experience. The room we had booked through booking.com was not the room we were given. In fact the room we tought we had booked and which was in the picture of our reservation was one of the suites of the ryokan. In these circumstances the ryokan staff came up with an elegant solution (after 40 minuted back and forth). We got to stay the night in the room we wanted, which should have cost us twice or more the price we had payed. The downside was that the suite was already rented out the second night of our booking. We therfore only stayed one night at the Yunoshimakan. Luckily our hotel in Kyoto was free to recieve us one night prior to our original ckeck in. Had not this been the case our stay in Japan would have become much more stressfull. But this is not the fault of the ryokan or its staff who were friendly and solution oriented in this situation.
Review 114:Located up a hill. Far from most other places, good for retreat. If not it is quite inconvenient to go out. Place too big, so not too much of homely feel.
Review 115:Really very traditional ryokan. Staff can't really converse well in English, some difficulties in communicating. Facilities are excellent, many free private family onsens, as well as public onsens. Quite wasted that the family onsens are closed in the morning. Many other facilites such as table tennis table, restaurants, bars, etc. Place is very big, so kind of fun to explore around. Futon was comfortable. Price was quite alright.
Review 116:Everything is perfect and excellent. Perhaps it is the best hotel I ever stayed given that I traveled extensively all my life. The staff are courteous, efficient and the rustic Japanese style offers a unique atmosphere of serenity and Edo period.
