Reviews for Sundaras Resort
Review 1:We have no problem.
Review 2:Absolutly kindfull personal, everthing is no problem, best care. Nice clean rooms and swimming pool. For this price best offer in this location.
Review 3:perfect location, next to the Rock Temple. Pool was a nice reprieve on the very hot day we were there. Staff very friendly and helpful. Room was large (we had a triple) and very comfortable.
Review 4:*the wifi could be better but it's inherent to the country in general *the facilities weren't fully finished (i.e the jacuzzi)
Review 5:*The hotel helped us with booking a driver for the duration of our trip in Sri Lanka. Saman was a great driver and we enjoyed his companies during our trip where he helped us with many things such as booking train tickets for a day trip or finding us the best deals. *the location of the hotel is pretty convenient to travel to the different sites in the region *the staff is very helpful and friendly
Review 6:Towels looked dirty. Only alcohol served was beer, others weren't avaliable. More lighting required around pool to swim in the evening.
Review 7:Great surroundings.staff were helpful. Good selection of food.
Review 8:We had an inexplicably incredible stay at this hotel. It was my birthday while I was there and the staff went out of their way to make it such a special day and evening for myself and my partner. Thank you so much guys. Other than this the buffet of curries for dinner is exceptional and some of the best we had in the whole of Sri Lanka, the staff were so friendly and accommodating. We recommend staying here, the staff, the facilities and everything are just so nice and we really felt treated staying here.
Review 9:We booked a twin room, but we got a double room and it seemed like a lot of trouble to just get what we payed for. Breakfast is everyday exactly the same, nothing special compared with the delicious homemade breakfast we got in a lot of other hotels in Sri Lanka. Diner is a small buffet as well, we didn't even try and went out to the Heritage Rest Inn, which I can recommend very much! After 3 days we asked to clean our room at 8 am (you have to ask), when we returned at 3pm our room wasn't cleaned yet. They had to look for more then 20 minutes for our keys (!) and then just changed our towels and pretended to have cleaned... Staff is correct, but not as nice, warm and welcoming as we were used to in other hotels. I wouldn't recommend it and I wouldn't go back, but it is ok if you have no other options.
Review 10:Pool is nice. Rooms are ok.
Review 11:The bathroom was full of insects.
Review 12:The location is great for visiting the ancient cities. The staff is very friendly and nice. They have a nice swimming pool. The food served is not bad. They provide accommodation for the driver.
Review 13:Bad check in and room allotment by the lady at the front desk. The newer rooms are airy but small Older rooms have a musty smell Atrocious pricing.
Review 14:Small Hotel Attentive staff mostly Nothing great but everything works Breakfast and dinner was good
Review 15:found a big cock in the room and scared
Review 16:very close to the temple! the guy at front desk is friendly and helpful (also handsome)! food was good! didn't use the pool because of the rain
Review 17:> They are still working on the swimming pool, so we couldn't use it
Review 18:> Staff was really nice > It will become a very good hotel in the future
Review 19:We had to change rooms 3 times, the first room had no mosquito nets nor window wire so anything could come in, the second room was a chalet but also had some wildlife in the bathroom and in the room, the third room was a lot better in the new house, but has built in a rush as the water doesn't drain in the bathroom, so if you have a shower the floor gets drenched. The rooms are in need of being re-built, whilst the rooms in the new house offer better facility they were still rushed, leaving us with a dull feeling. The menu in the room for drinks in the bar is a mis sell as they do not have anything except beer, which is good for me but my wife was left hanging dry.
Review 20:The swimming pool was great. The staff were very accommodating as we changed our room 3 times. The reception and restaurant manager were great both really nice guys and willing to have a good drink with you. The location was excellent to visit the Cave temple - only a 5 min walk away!
Review 21:For 1-2 days, nice place.
Review 22:Very nice and friendly stuff!;) great place to stay 1-2 days while traveling to Dumbula and Sigiria. We have free upgrade of our room, so thanks a lot! Free and working wifi in each room, nice garden.
Review 23:Really nothing!
Review 24:Sundaras is located just a 5 min walk away from the golden temple. It is a very green oasis in the heart of Dambulla, quite and peaceful. The staff is very friendly and they are trying to make your stay as best as they can. I felt very welcome and can highly recommend this place to anyone travelling to Sri Lanka. From Sundaras you can go on several day trips like Sigariya or Kandy. If you are getting tired, you should definetly try the Avurvedic Massage, one of the best I've ever had!!
Review 25:arrived and water was leaking into the room through the balcony door; the main door was not properly closing (after requesting to have this changes after a long time someone came shape the door and left the pieces of wood on the floor); we were handed a wrong key; charging at a bad rate in another currency; pool under construction; unfriendly staff; hot water sometimes (if you are lucky)...
Review 26:not much
Review 27:No lights over the stairway to our rooms. Could put a lamp on the wall .
Review 28:Had a wonderful time in the hotel. Staff were v friendly. We felt well taken careof. Even though there was some work at the pool side (pool bar in construction) we had a lovely time . Had the whole pool to ourselves! Will definitely book again if we are going to Dambulla.
Review 29:WiFi had limited access. I changed room as it did not have access as advertised. Parts are under construction and will be good once completed (ie spa pool, pool bar). Aspects are still been finished no lights to go up stairs at night. The food was basic and very western not what I came to Sri Lanka for.
Review 30:Swimming in the pool at the end of the day!
Review 31:Sundaras is an excellent choice. Very friendly staff, we were heartily welcomed at the reception and offered an upgrade to the family room for free. The room was great: very spacious with a nice high ceiling and it had ac and a fridge. Also great is the pool, the biggest we saw in Sri Lanka. It’s situated in a garden which dwells on the jungle so there’s monkeys, squirrels and the likes going around. They are still busy expanding the pool with a bar and a jacuzzi, so you can tell the place will be quite flashy later on. The restaurant is a pleasant place and serves good food, we enjoyed the rice and curry menu. And lastly, this resort is very conveniently located, at about a 15 minute walk from the Dambulla Caves. For the city itself you’ll need a tuc-tuc. So: 4,5 stars, no doubt 5 stars when this place is finished!
Review 32:Nothing, i recommend to everybody to visit this hotel!
Review 33:We booked just one night, but after two days of traveling, we came back for antoher two days and spent time just in hotel. The owner, Damian, is really most friendliest guy on Sri Lanka. Hotel is wonderfull, kitchen is very delicios. Room are nice and clean, and place is guite.
Review 34:Reception staff not very helpful and did not give much information. They were not interested in their guests.
Review 35:Hotel was close to Dambulla caves and only a short distance from Sigirya. Food was ok. Nothing special though. Restaurant staff was polite and friendly.
Review 36:The shower had no water pressure. No place to hang your clothes. The chicken sandwich was very bad.
Review 37:Swimming pool, the bed and the staff. The Sri Lanka breakfast was very tasty. The safari arranged by hotel was very cool.
Review 38:When you took a shower the whole bathroom flooded, there was no shower cabin.
Review 39:Friendly staff, we got an free upgrade of the room from standard to luxury. A nice pool, only the pool bar is not yet finished unfortunately. Cosy hotel
Review 40:Our stay was comfortable. However, the property could do better by adding a few basic facilities in rooms such as more hangars for hanging clothes etc. The pool is also well done but needs showers and a sheltered place to keep belongings.
Review 41:The staff is not very friendly. They give us a room which was very different from we booked and when we asked they just say because we only stay here for one night, and the room we booked has no hot water but we could see see European lived in it, of course it's cheating!!! 希望中国人不要预定这一家,真的不好!!
Review 42:near the temple
Review 43:Can't really think of much apart from bulb out which did not both us
Review 44:We stayed here for 2 nights. Amazing staff, could not help us enough. Even tried to get us a cheaper price than we found on booking.com, for our stay in Kandy after leaving this resort. Room was spacious, airy and very clean. As it was low season they upgraded our room for free and allowed us to do a last minute late check out request at no extra charge (all this for what was already a bargain price). Bed was really comfy, shower had good pressure. Food was good, very well priced, never had a club sandwich with 5 layers before, would recommend it :). They have an excellent knowledge of the area, and assisted us in booking a tour through the resort which they did a deal on for us. If we come back to Dambulla, wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. :D
Review 45:The management Damien & Sofia are super friendly and helpful. I hv spent 2 nites there and then I came back for a more nite! quiet environment with comfortable room. feeling like home and relaxing here! And they hv a v good driver to show me around in Sri Lanka, it truly eases my mind and make me totally enjoy the trip!
Review 46:A/C temperature was unable to change. Fan was noisy and room wasn't cool enough. Too many mosquitoes into the room from bathroom. There was a dead spider on the toast during breakfast :(
Review 47:Owner was a very polite gentleman. Changed the room due to the noisy air condition in the room. Room boy was lovely too.
Review 48:The AC in my room broke down what caused a little inconvenience for me.
Review 49:The staff was very nice and helpful, I guess that's just the nature of Sri Lankan people. The food was also pretty delicious.
Review 50:Electricity keep going off, ended up quite pricey. It was also under construction which is a bit of an eye sore.
Review 51:Pool was great, clean place, good food, room was big. TV room had all the channels we wanted.
Review 52:Bath awful , full of mosquitos, restaurant service slow.
Review 53:restaurant comfortable. Close to Dambulla temple, but you can't walk outside during night
Review 54:Room door does not close well, the quality of the finish (bathroom, doors, mirrors...) are far from being proffessional
Review 55:Close to the Golden Temple, 5 min walking. The pool look good but we didn't time to use it. Big room, very new. The owners are very friendly, they stayed for a drink with us in the evening at the nice restaurant
Review 56:The only disadvantage I found was lack of hooks in bathroom. We had to hang our towels on the door.) And pillows were little bit dirty under pillowcase (((((((
Review 57:We stayed in Sundaras for 2 nights from 31.08 to 02.09 and we really enjoyed this place. At reception we met Swedish girl who was as much helpful as possible! She met us with fresh juice and provided accommodation for our driver for a very reasonable price! And when we found that there wasn't a minibar, owners provided us with it in 10 minutes! ( despite minibar is only in deluxe rooms) Hotel is under reconstruction ( they dig second swimming pool) but there wasn't a single minute when we felt uncomfortable about that! Breakfast is tasty, everything is clean, WiFi is fast! We liked that it was only 5 min to Dambulla ( very busy place) but in the hotel we felt like in beach resort)) What I would like to describe more is staff. We've never seen in Sri Lanka before so neat, reserved and European waiters who cared a lot about guests. Thank you so much, guys!
Review 58:The breakfast itself was tasty nevertheless a bit too modest. Just some fruit and scrambled egg. We expected at least fresh juice and normal bread not toasts. The transport to Habarana (elephant ride) was extremely expensive. They told us it is 40min away from the hotel what turned out to be just 20min. We paid 30 dollars for the drop as they convinced us it is the same price as by tuc tuc (not true).
Review 59:The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Especially the Swedish girl. The swimming pool is also worth mentioning as it is big, located just in front of the rooms and the kind owner also let us swim at night. We absolutely loved the brand-new rooms with wi-fi and a balcony. It is a great place to relax there and eat good food.
Review 60:the staff was very friendly and nice, they gave us the latest refurnished rooms which were super modern and big. the swimming pool was still under construction but was already open to swim we enjoyed it a lot :-) they also have a restaurant and the food is quite good. the location is perfect, only 2 minutes walking from the amazing dambulla temple. they also organize tours to the closest temples, such as polonnaruwa, sigirya etc. highly recommended!
Review 61:Awful food, bug in my salad. The room had no TV, the air conditioner didn't work, there was no bed comforter and the swimming pool was under construction. The only reason we booked it was because there's not that much to do in Dambulla, ridiculous expensive for this poor hotel. Please don't stay here.
Review 62:Good place to stay if you are travelling on elsewhere but ongoing pool work doesn't make it very inviting - a lot of concrete everywhere. Wouldn't have wanted to stay more than 1 night. We organised 2 x excursions and whilst the driver was very nice it wasn't clear that the price of the excursion doesn't include ticket price into the sights making the whole trip pretty expensive.
Review 63:Great room and bathroom (we stayed in the new building). Breakfast very good - dinner menu a little disappointing due to lack of Sri Lankan cuisine - and pricey for what you get.
Review 64:Swimming pool was still under construction (you can swim) and the rooms we were given (we presume they were the older rooms) did not respond to the cleaning standards we expected.
Review 65:Perfect location close to the Cave Temple, food quality was good and reasonably priced. Staff was friendly and accommodating.
Review 66:nothing- it was great.
Review 67:The hotel has a lovely nearly completed ( as of August 2015) pool which is great for cooling down after a visit to Dambulla temple - a walk away.
Review 68:We paid for a deluxe room and were initially escorted to the far inferior standard room. Spoke to another couple there who experienced the same. Be sure to get what you paid for!
Review 69:Excellent location - a skip and a jump from the entrance to the Polonnaruwa Heritage site.
Review 70:1.Facilites are broken ,such as lock and door 2. No hot water for bath after 11pm,in one room no water for toilet 3. Long time waiting for dinner ,more than one hour 4. no receive US dollars and only local LKR
Review 71:Construction of a swimming pool going on. Food quite expensive.
Review 72:The location is only 15 mins walk to the caves (well worth a trip!) and 2 km to Dambulla. I was upgraded to a larger room in the main building rather than be in the annex. Run by women which is quite unusual in Sri Lanka.
Review 73:Staff weren't particularly welcoming, felt like it didn't have the friendliness of the family guesthouses/resorts we stayed elsewhere, nor the professionalism of a modern hotel, a bit caught in between the two.
Review 74:Good location near the cave temple, the main reason we were in Dambulla. The room was spacious.
Review 75:Wifi did not work at all. Locks of the door did work and we were locked in. Ants in room and bed! Quality is just not good enough for this price.
Review 76:Rooms look Nice at first sight, staff was very kind. The restaurant is very cozy.
Review 77:Reception staff poor, however breakfast staff really good.
Review 78:Right next to the caves so very easy to go about that. Dambulla is bleak so by not being in the town its hard to say you miss out. Value for money, comfort of the room in general was good
Review 79:In our all Sri Lanka trip, we didn't have any mosquito problem. But only in this hotel we could not even sleep because of mosquitos. The bathroom wasn't clean and the flush didn't work. Credit card machine didn't work and we had to wait so much time to solve the problem about the payment.
Review 80:Nice natural environment and good location.
Review 81:Be careful with the price, to the show booking.com price you need to add the 25% in tax, and for this, the hotel become overated.
Review 82:Best location for a night and see the Rock Temple(which is the once thing to do in Dambulla) 5 min walking, friendly staff, abundant brakfast, clean and big room. Coffe/thea maker.
Review 83:- WiFi run only in restaurant, not in room. - Food in restaurant is not very good. - We went to trip and we wanted clean our room, but staff didn't do nothing.
Review 84:- Place is very near to temple. - Room is good.
Review 85:Choice of breakfast ( seems to b the same routine set of items on the breakfast menu in all of Sri Lanka where breakfast is included in the hotel price) Wifi was u available throughout the property( said due to technical reasons ) but was available at least in the restaurant at the back of the hotel..
Review 86:the USP is the location on the kandy -dambulla rd. Doesnt give the impression of a hotel but more that of a beautifil bugalow . pretty green environs... Its clean n cozy
Review 87:WiFi wasn't working ('monkey damaged the cable'). Reception staff were very hard to located, but restaurant staff were helpful so we went to them each time. Dinner menu is expensive (twice price of others nearby). We asked for tuk tuk to sigiriya and were quoted 1500 including wait time, we said we had it on offer for 1200 with Saman and were told they would add wait time, we took the chance and they didn't, so sundaras just add 300 to the price...
Review 88:Room was comfortable, a/c worked well, breakfast was standard Sri Lankan fare. We went to Samans guesthouse 100m down road away from temple for an amazing feast for dinner (500 rupees per head).
Review 89:Food, bed, location, price, staff, facilities, WiFi, etc.
Review 90:Nothing. Not professional at all. Owners are money seekers. They pretend to be a good quality restaurant. But they 100% fail
Review 91:small bungalows surrounded by greens, flowers, plants and monkeys. Very nice chilled place, clean with nice patio. Tasty breakfast, stayed for dinner there too was also good. Walking distance to the temple Would definitely stayed there again if I was in the area. Very helpful and friendly staff!
Review 92:Service charge to literally everything you order was a really negative surprise - the only of 8 places we stayed in Sri Lanka to have it.
Review 93:There's not too much to see in Dambulla, but this place is next to the one thing there is to see: the cave temples. Also within a short walking distance to the wholesale market, worth a visit.
Review 94:The lack of a mosquito net, which is absolutely necessary. HOT water was not available. The sink's drain was broken, thus the floor was extremely wet. The location is too far from Dambulla downtown - though it is quite conveniently located to visit the temples (10 minutes walk). It was far overpriced compared too many other places in town (and in Sri Lanka in general).
Review 95:We were allowed to keep our room for one additional hour beyond the check out time. Big room.
Review 96:The hotel is really close to the Cave Temples which is great! The staff is super helpful, the rooms are very clean and comfortable and totally affordable. Great place to stay!
Review 97:Friendly and helpful people, the room was very nice, big and clean. Very comfortable bed and great bathroom. Good wifi and location - only 5 min walk to the temple.
Review 98:No nearby restaurants while the vegetarian options are limited and extremely overpriced. Lot of insects in the vicinity although the room was mostly free of insects. Bathroom interiors not shielded well and visible from the outside. Moreover, we were not provided the room that we booked as it didn't have a patio.
Review 99:Very close to the rock temple but otherwise away from the town. Excellent free wi-fi connectivity. Air conditioning worked rather well. Hot water available around the clock.
Review 100:I think this was our best stay on Sri Lanka. The room had everything we needed, including tasty breakfast, helpful staff and the big friendly owner's dog this hotel is a perfect place for a nice sleep.
Review 101:Great and friendly staff, very keen to welcome and accommodate you and get involved in chit chat, although this made it difficult at times to eat as they carried on! Good food but drinks quite expensive. Pool being built at the back so bungalows had muddy areas to trek through in dark which wasn't fun but a great stay!
Review 102:The price of the rooms is way too expensive compared to what you usually get for that amount : no pool, rooms are ok (but far from the standard you would expect...) There is no accommodation for drivers. They do not accept American Express.
Review 103:The staff and the owner are very nice. The ambiance is very relaxed. The WIFI works well (especially compared to other places we stayed at).
Review 104:Bathroom, hard mattres.
Review 105:We stayed in the original part of the resort. While rooms were rather average, Verandah was lovely to sit and enjoy cool evenings. Staff were very friendly and the grounds well maintained.
Review 106:so many mosquito and another thing flying around- in the bed in the bath room No mosquito net.. Sleeping is very hard...
Review 107:Location Staff very friendly and helpful Tea facilities in the room
Review 108:not a standard room add a bed, but a storehouse with 3 beds, the shower could not use and leaking the whole night. terrible location, not friendly staffs, not only disapointed, realy angry for being cheated, nothing promised on the websit provided, and considering the high price, rob money from tourists.
Review 109:Nothing good, a kind of cheating! USD140for nothing, why 3 stars for this hotle?
Review 110:When ordering in the in house dining area, the food did take a while to come.
Review 111:Perfect for a night stay in Dambulla as is close to the cultural sights. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean, nice seating area outside and also had mosquito net over the bed.
Review 112:They are building a swimminpool, and the view from our room was mostly a building site. Too far away and too much traffic for walking to town.
Review 113:Our room ,nr 114, was bright new. Good beds. The boys in the breakfast area were very kind and helpful. Close to the golden temple.
Review 114:Although there are no problems with this accommodation, it is extremely overpriced. Food in restaurant is okay, but that is overpriced too. For the same money we had much better accommodation in other places in Sri Lanka.
Review 115:It is very close to the cave temples, there was hot water, and staff was nice and helpful.
Review 116:numerous mosquitos!the washroom is visible from the outside. the 1st night was tranfered to another hotel that didn't tell in advance.
Review 117:good garden view. brilliant breakfast, best service.kind crew.
Review 118:See above. We also had some problems with the WiFi.
Review 119:Nice owners and staff. But the place didn't felt like a good value for money (same as most placed I've been to in Sri Lanka. You pay here a high premium for good online reviews.
Review 120:Watch out for the wasps at Sigiriya Rock.
Review 121:The staff at the resort are fantastic. Suda and his brother who run the restaurant were amazing! A great stay. Thank you
Review 122:We fell in love with Sundaras resort. Fantastic location, only 2 minutes walk from Rock tample and Golden temple. Easy to get from there to Sigirya. Specious and clean rooms and bathrooms. Strong wi fi signal, both in rooms, restaurant and lobby wich is unusual in Sri lanka hotels. Owner is travelling around the world so he knows exactly what tourists need to feel comfy in hotels. Friendly and helpfull staff. Especially the owner Damien and waiter Suda. Truly recommend !!! Anna & Krzysztof from Poland :)
Review 123:We had an amazing stay at Sundaras Resort and can't recommend it highly enough. We arrived on a wet New Years eve and were met by Damien and an all you can eat and drink buffet, followed by a Sri Lankan traditional boiling of the milk to usher in the new year with all the other guests. The staff are very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The rooms are clean, comfortable and spacious and the food is delicious. Damien arranged drivers for us who were amazing guides around the cultural triangle. Damien also gave us us invaluable recommendations of what we should see and do whilst in Sri Lanka, he hit the nail on the head every time. It’s in a great central spot to visit all the sights of the cultural triangle and is a stone’s throw from the Dambulla caves. We will definitely be returning!
Review 124:Really friendly and helpful staff. We meet really nice people at this place and we took a drink together during the evening in the lovely garden. Ask the staff for day trips and they can help you arrange it. We did Sigriya and Polonnaruwa in one day which was perfect, especially if you don't have so much time in Dambulla. The resort is close to the cave temple so it's perfect to go there to see the sunset. Also a really good thing about this place it's the wifi you have full connection everywhere, Best wifi in Sri Lanka! Sundaras resort is the place to stay in Dambulla, we highly recommend it!
Review 125:The first room we were shown was mouldy, then we were without water for several hours, electricity went off in the middle of the night and couldn't rouse anyone. Accommodation was half finished and slept to the sound of dripping water.
Review 126:Didn't get hot water, bathroom door was broken, food was very ordinary. While they provided a tea kettle and tea bags, there was no milk or sugar and we were told they didn't have any.
Review 127:Spacious room, nice sitting area outside, walking distance to Dambulla Caves
Review 128:Nothing - they did the very best they could under difficult circumstances
Review 129:The staff were amazing, particularly the manager who did everything he could to make sure our stay was as good as it could be despite the difficult circumstances caused by a sudden spell of heavy rain causing major disruption in the area. The food and service was excellent and the hotel will be a gem once the building works are complete.
Review 130:Breakfast was poor Water pressure/ heat was iffy Felt tricked intousing "the sister hotel" pool. Bought lunch and drinks therethen was charged additional $12 for using the facilities! Not close toanything else other than temple, no restaurants etc
Review 131:It was close to the rock temples, just a few minutes walk. Lunch anddinner were pretty good but took ages to come, 1.5hours for sandwich istoo much. English speaking staff member
Review 132:The breakfast seemed to have been simply thrown on the table (e.g. the cheapest artificial jam available in supermarkets, sour pineapple). No problem if the price for the room was 50% less. However, they sell a cheap basic guesthouse at a very upmarket price. The owner of the guest house is (too much) business-oriented. We did not feel comfortable.
Review 133:The veranda and the garden were ok, although it is a construction site at the moment.
The Fine Print
Please note that the property provides driver accommodation at an additional cost.
