Reviews for Fat Cod Backpackers

Review 1:Our room was close to the lounge which was noisy until about 2am.

Review 2:We caught the last ferry from Wellington which didn't get in until 9:45pm. The reception sped up our check-in so I could get the kids to bed.

Review 3:It need to be more well cared. The bathrooms are really poor, there is no place to leave you clothes wile you shower. The room smelled weird.

Review 4:The location is very convenient for those who want to get the ferry on the next day. The staff is really helping.

Review 5:Was staying on NYE so the bar next door was pumping until about 4am. The same downsides as every back packers.

Review 6:Really close to the city and very cheap.

Review 7:A few minor things. Some new pots and pans would be a good idea. Heavier curtains in the bedrooms. And hooks in the showers.

Review 8:Friendly and comfortable hostel right next to Picton Harbour. Has everything you need.

Review 9:Great location to ferry terminals, we got there late so quite a lot of places was closed but found a really nice bar near the harbour for a great glass of wine. The place was clean and comfy but a little noisy from other guests.

Review 10:Cozy and homely place with a friendly and helpful staff. 5mns away from the ferry terminal, main street and close to hiking tracks which makes it a perfect central location

Review 11:Only little fault was they needed new hooks in showers for hanging of things.:)

Review 12:The location being so close to interislander, town, eaterys, walks, habour, trainstation. everything we needed for a weekend stop. Warm and cosy.

Review 13:Our room was next to the reception which were loud talking in the morning, the internet was not unlimited time usuage

Review 14:Room was nice, good area very central

Review 15:The room smelt bad. I stayed in an all girls dorm and it was small also. It's all very dated. The mattress on the bed had a big dip in the middle. Wifi limited to 100mb.

Review 16:Cheap and located well but Picton is small so most things are accessible. It was suitable for 1 night stay.

Review 17:I didn't like the timed showers, not only for the fact that they were timed, but also the inconvenience. If you didn't read the instructions outside you are left waiting for the water to heat and then you have to get redressed to check the problem. As well as that, most of the lights over showers and toilets do not work. Finally, the carpet looks veryy dirty as you enter which does not give a good impression initially.

Review 18:Staff very pleasant and helpful and rooms pretty standard.

Review 19:the fact is I booked a bed in this backpacker a while ago, requesting for free pick up, which they supposedly kindly offer but the night I came through the Ferry Terminal, they sent me an email saying they couldn't do it..leaving me with my big luggages, alone, at night (9.40pm)..Although the backpacker hostel wasn't far, I was quite new to Picton, and my luggages were too heavy for me and I was too tired after a long long trip, to walk there and had to call a taxi..I expressed my disappointment to a staff member but it was as if my concerns fell on deaf ears...Though when I check out, surprisingly they accepted to give me a short lift to the ferry terminal, but then it was a different person at the reception.

Review 20:I liked how close the backpacker was to the ferry terminal....but

Review 21:Noise, as our room was directly under the lounge. Also, couldn't leave early, as we had to wait for the office to open in the morning, to get our key bond back.(We had paid in cash.)

Review 22:Evening staff very efficient & friendly.

Review 23:Kitchen - very old fridges that struggled to cope and no freezers for icepacks etc, dirty tee towels and dishcloths, generally grubby. No soap for the toilet hand basins. Overall a tired hostel.

Review 24:Price and location, which suited our particular situation on the day. General noise on the open deck above our room was quietened at approx 10.30 pm which was much appreciated.

Review 25:Leaving Picton.

Review 26:Easy location. The room rate was good. Friendly staff and very helpful owner. I had a great nights sleep, considering so close to the railway station, not a 'toot' was heard.

Review 27:Blood spots on the linen. Very loud / room by the entrance and reception. I booked room for myself to have robimy and to relax but it wasn't exactly the case.

Review 28:Clean / renovated showers.

Review 29:The toilet doors needed some repairs.

Review 30:I stayed at your place only for a night. Liked the fireplace, the TV watching/lounge room, the outside balcony. The staff and the other back packers were friendly and helpful. My stay was quite comfortable and enjoyable.

Review 31:We were going to arrive after their check-in closed at 10:30pm. But the staff were easy to deal with and were very accommodating. We pre-paid for the room and they left us a key and instructions for our room for when we arrived at midnight. Thanks again

Review 32:There was nothing that I could see not to like. It was quiet, very affordable and thoroughly pleasant. Highly recommended by this traveller anyway.

Review 33:Excellent location. Very close to both bus and Inter Islander Ferry. Easy walk to both - and I am aged seventy, toting a back pack. Fat Cod is also next door to 'Toot and Whistle' pub which has a great kitchen with good food available.

Review 69:Staff

Review 70:The staff were not very friendly and were judgemental

Review 77:The railway and works yard right next door that started working at 2am in the morning and was very loud.

Review 78:Easy to fine and get to from the ferry. Handy to shops when you have no transport. Comfortable areas to relax and plenty of space to prep food etc.

Review 79:Tiny room, signs about bed bugs around which made me think there were bed bugs, slightly soulless bathroom facilities and generally a lack of comfort/cosyness about the place. The guy working there was nice and other guests were cool.

Review 80:Location is great for the ferry, nice fireplace

Review 81:The showers could do with a coat of paint.

Review 82:I found the room at up like a hotel room with lovely laundered linen and towels nicely rolled and set nicely on the bed. It was really quiet in the mornings and not too late at night. It is so central. Showers were great pressure and hot. Would go back again.

Review 84:Comfy bed, Good Kitchen, good bathroom, and Toilet and Laundry facility's. Would recommend Fat Cod and I will stay again

Review 85:it was a little noisy through the night with the marina right beside the accommodation. Lots of digger driving around arranging containers for shipping. This did not bother me though.

Review 86:This was perfect for my travel up to the North Island. Staff were friendly and helpful and the room was clean and comfortable. 1 min walk across to restaurants and cafes.

Review 87:bed old , dirty carpet, very run down shower' toilet block, overall impression; a dump

Review 88:after staying there ,you sure appreciate all other accomadation

Review 89:The whole building was cold. Heating stuff doesent work as it should.

Review 90:Cozy and lovely place to stay. You can easily feel yourself welcome. Free dinnersoup every day.

Review 91:This place was great. Highly recommended for a term in Picton. Everyone was very helpful and the facilities are well kept. Plus, free soup every night!

Review 92:Noise from office directly outside my room. Sound from guests on balcony and pool room above my room.

Review 93:Staff very helpful (woman owner). Very handy to shops and ferry terminal. Heater in room. Comfy bed. Great selection of books. Clean and well provisioned kitchen. Wood fire. Hot showers. Great price for private room. Quiet location considering next to pub.

Review 94:The step down into toilet area which, if all the lights were off, would be dark and they have obviously suffered water damage, so it is hard to tell whether they are entirely clean or not. Radio playing downstairs all the time was annoying as it made it hard to hear the TV in the upstairs lounge as well.

Review 95:Good facilities and friendly staff who explained how things worked well. Handy location and nice pub next door who also were very friendly and helpful. Good kitchen and free soup was also nice. Good lounge area.

Review 96:I liked that the man who answered understood my situation ( I arrived at midnight, after check in hours) and he helped me, he left me the keys in the mail box. Nice people. Many thanks.
