Reviews for Thilanka Resort and Spa

Review 1:There is only one therapist in the spa. And no female therapist.

Review 2:the hotel is a great location if you're wanting to visit the ancient cities. It's 1.5hours to Anuradhapura and 20 minutes to Sigirya. The rooms are spacious and the decor is rustic mixed with modern. This is a tranquil and quiet spot to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.

Review 3:Smelly bathroom drain. They had a air freshener which sort of helped.

Review 4:Great buffet & delicious food & curries. Short Tuk Tuk ride to temple of the caves. Helpful & friendly staff, helped sort a driver to go to Sigiriya (go early to avoid crowds - it opens 7am). Refreshing swimming pool. Spacious & private rooms in expansive grounds.

Review 5:The bathroom could be more cleaned. Wifi only in loby. The bar close at 10 pm and after that there is nothing to do.

Review 6:We have stayed here only for 1 night. We didn't have enough time to try spa or pool. Room was clean and beautiful.

Review 7:The room is enormous and clean, with all of the necessary conveniences. Especially the bathroom with a Jacuzzi & separate toilet. The entire staff was warm, friendly and accommodating, going well above and beyond the level of service I've ever experienced from a resort staff. The amazing staff and spacious rooms make this a superb value in Thilanka. Highly recommend.

Review 8:The hotel is a bit far from the center of Dambulla but you always find a tuk-tuk to drive you. Very Easy.

Review 9:Staff are very carrying and friendly (from the reception, bar, restaurant, and services in général). They are always smiling too. The hotel is very beautiful, if you Like nature is the perfect place To be! Restaurant is very good!

Review 10:The fact that they were not aware of our booking for two persons in a double room, although we had Booking.com proof and had to show it to them - that was annoying. Be nice to get wifi in the rooms as well.

Review 11:The commitment to the greening of the surroundings. The genuine warmth and welcome offered to us. The great food.

Review 12:The Spa is not what a spa should be. My suggestion is to remove it and put in an indoor games room: many guests come as families with children and apart from the pool there is not much to keep them occupied.

Review 13:Once inside the resort, it is quite charming, the units being located inside a mango orchard. Beside the orchard are paddy fields, behind is a pineapple plantation. Some quirky additions like a vintage car and part of the swimming pool inside the lobby. Rooms are large, bathrooms very large! A little old and showing its age, but still beautiful and the staff are wonderful!

Review 14:It is our worst hotel experience in Sri Lanka. Room are old, bed are dirty (the staff put the bed outside of the room when they are cleaning, which attract a lot of insects on it). The water does not work. And we add the pleasur to sleep with a mouse scratching and running all over the room all night long. When we told that to the staff the only answer was "ok we will check the room..." The swiming is nice but full of flys.

Review 15:The staff of the restaurant is very attentive and the food is good

Review 16:The location is not great. If you want to do anything outside of Thilanka you need a taxi or Tuktuk.

Review 17:Very spacious room with a great bathroom (with rainshower and jacuzzi). Nice swimming pool. Helpfull staff and a good restaurant. A little bit expensive for most young couples or backpackers but the price is good considering the luxury.

Review 18:breakfast and dinner much below the average of all the other services of the hotel wi fi is free but available only in the common areas

Review 19:staff extremely kind very nice structure strategic for all the visits in the area of ancient sites

Review 20:The breakfast variety could be improved; we paid for the extra bed, but it is not comfortable

Review 21:Modern style decor; very nice swimming pool; the hotel is surrounded with lots of beautiful trees; driver likes his room as well

Review 22:This is very personal, but we didn't like the music. Everything looks stylish, but in the restaurant they played constantly the same cd with slow piano covers out of the 70's (Richard Clayderman?) and in the bar discomusic from the 80's. I suggest good loungemusic or even Sri Lankan music for the atmosphere !

Review 23:We really liked staying here, it's very stylish, clean, good beds, very friendly staff and close to the Dambulla temple and caves. And last but not least you don't have to pay extra for Wifi.

Review 24:A little distance from main attractions - but tuk-tuks easily available.

Review 25:- Amazing pool! Nicely-maintained compound / fruit & vegetable gardens. - Delicious food - both breakfast (included in our room rate) and dinner (paid ~US$13 for a 4-course meal - delicious). Impressed with 9 types of breads in our breakfast basket! -Jacuzzi bathtub (eventhough it didn't work in our room, still was a nice tub)!

Review 26:When we arrived at the hotel, the gentleman at the counter gave us an unwelcoming look and said "can I help you?" Maybe "are you here to check in?" Would have been the appropriate thing to say to us. We advised that we were checking in and he was like "that's not possible, the hotel is full." We showed him out booking and he kept saying the hotel was full. He acknowledged receiving our booking and never made one apology to us. He called a hotel next door and negotiated a price with them and told us we needed to settle the bill with him then go next door and stay. We looked up the hotel and it wasn't as high rating as the one we booked so we didn't want to pay the same. It was clear after his mess up, he was trying to make a few dollars out of us. We were exhausted and disappointed so decided to find our own hotel at midnight that night without without letting him take advantage of us. Be careful with booking this hotel. We advised that we would turn up at 11pm yet they still gave our room away. Poor service.

Review 27:Beautiful hotel

Review 28:Very nice hotel, but one big problem - the wifi was limited to the reception area and even then it was very slow and often didn't work.

Review 29:Great location and set up with friendly staff.

Review 30:It is 7 or 8km from the town. Staff are disinterested. Leak in the room reported byt staff never came to fix. I fixed it myself. Lizards in the bedroom making loud noise,i think staff leave doors and windows open when cleaning. No wifi access in rooms. Poor wifi elsewhere in hotel. Pretty much non existent.

Review 31:The pool is nice, the rooms are large and breakfast is excellent

Review 32:Great place, its a hidden gem. The rooms were lovely, very large and clean. The swimming pool is fantastic and open until 9pm so great for a late night swim. Food was good, but can become the same after a while.

Review 33:Wifi only available in lobby.

Review 34:Execllent location, just a short hourney from the centre of Dambulla. The staff were very friendly, and I even got a surprise cake on my birthday! The food was good, and breakfast was enjoyable. The pool was perfect, as the area gets very hot! Rooms are large, with 180 degree views of the grounds, where you can spot many animals.

Review 35:Had trouble confirming my reservation made 3 weeks before staying there as booking.com just could not communicate well with hotel; food is very basic; no wifi in rooms; insects!

Review 36:Location (very close to Dambulla monastery), friendly staff, good rooms

Review 37:Food in the evening was not of a high standard and it was very expensive. Somewhat remote location

Review 38:Rooms were very nice. The hotel grounds were also very nice.

Review 39:The limited wifi access. You can only access the wifi around the pool, but not in the rooms or in the restaurant.

Review 40:The setting of the hotel is beautiful. The pool is lovely and well maintained.

Review 41:very poor wifi connection, and only in common areas (in spite of booking.com saying it's available everywhere in the property), but it's free and not 4.5 USD per hour as booking.com's description says

Review 42:very nice and picturesque hotel, near the farming fields very friendly staff good value for money

Review 43:service was bad, only male staff, not sure if that is related to the bad service, only male massage therapist who removed towel which covered my body and made me lying completely naked, and he has done that in a very uncomfortable way without warning. I have had many massages of different kinds around the world but that was a first. I stopped it and cancelled the massage. The atmosphere in the hotel feels a bit strange and male staff is rolling eyes if you order or request something. Very unfortunate given the very nice surroundings (trees, rice fields) of the hotel! Very quiet.

Review 44:The garden and the rice fields are amazing

Review 45:Wifi is not stable

Review 46:Im so surprised that the resort is overall exceed my expectation. Staff are friendly and helpful. Room is nice and environment make me very relax. Location is perfect as its only 4km from Golden Temple and only takes me 30 mins from hotel to Sigiriya. I will definitely recommend to my friends. =)

Review 47:We booked this room for 2 nights the day before we arrived but when we got there they said they were overbooked for the second night and they would find us another hotel and transfer us. we said we would look at the option they came up with but in the event another booking .com reservation was cancelled the next day so we stayed. I got the impression this happened a bit as they expect cancellations and over book.

Review 48:The setting is lovely in amongst the gardens where they grow all their fruit, veg and rice. The pool is lovely and the rooms good.

Review 49:- no internet in the room, in the public area it takes ages to connect (30 min) - could use better maintenance (chipped and stained walls) - western dinner was really bad

Review 50:- very nice rooms, big and bright - Jacuzzi - clean - nice quiet area

Review 51:No negatives.

Review 52:One of the best hotels i have ever been to. I travel to Sri Lanka quite often and have stayed in many hotels but this one was of high standards. The rooms were nice and clean, the staff was excellent and the food was amazing. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Review 53:No one there to initially greet us on arrival and wifi only works in the lobby, not rooms

Review 54:Amazing pool, great food, huge rooms and bathroom has a jacuzzi too. The pool was usually empty and often felt like our own private villa. Very comfortable rooms and stay.

Review 55:- room a little noisy early morning (next door to the resort?) - nice balcony but no furniture and the furniture in room wouldn't fit through the door - not close to rest of town (however this made it very peaceful!)

Review 56:- grounds were beautiful - lovely pool - lovely food / buffet - staff very helpful and hospitable - when we asked for a certain juice the barman went to pick it from the orchard! - large rooms with good bathrooms

Review 57:The food was very poor (especially if you want some rice and curry...not their forte, however if you are looking for western food it's decent). Another thing to bear in mind is that as soon as people see you walking out of that place (as it's so amazing looking) they will try and completely rip you off for cash. So my advice is to either book a tuk tuk or a taxi before hand (when they haven't seen the place) or if you are already there like me and my mate, walk a bit away from it and get a tuk tuk that way and make sure you barter the price down as much as possible as they will see you are a forigner and imediately assume you are a never ending ATM. Besides that the place is amazing!

Review 58:Great staff, excellent facilities and very beautifull.

Review 59:food

Review 60:good location between mango plantation and rice field

Review 61:Paid for food for 5 years old...

Review 62:bad smell in toleit the bed uncomfortable

Review 63:Hope the food could be improved a bit.

Review 64:Very big room, and very big bathroom as well. Quiet and peaceful.

Review 65:lack of locker

Review 66:the bathroom floor spacious bathroom

Review 67:plunge pool not exactly what you would get into, did not look clean. Doors into rooms did not close properly.

Review 68:pool, location

Review 69:Is a nice hotel with full hotel services. Staff is very responsive , especially the guy at reception.

Review 70:No wifi in the rooms

Review 71:Great pool, wonderful grounds, very relaxing

Review 72:The quite environment along with the pool.

Review 73:wifi was weak

Review 74:Nice room and amenities

Review 75:A very beautiful and serene property

Review 76:Quiet location lovely veg and fruit garden.

Review 77:Incompetant management leading to poor standards of cleanliness and service

Review 78:Location and vistas

Review 79:the food, except the beverages, was not so good

Review 80:The staff, room, quietness

Review 81:Noise at night: monkeys jumping on the roof, village people celebrating, etc.

Review 82:Nice swimming pool, very good breakfast and massage.

Review 83:GREAT hotel! really enjoyed staying there- cool room, great food, very helpful and friendly staff!

Review 84:the location of the beatiful pool. its under the dining hall.

Review 85:the employees. especially the one who was helping with the luggages.

Review 86:Food excellent - staff very helpful

Review 87:Swimming pool was situated in an uncomfortable area.

Review 88:Nothing!

Review 89:Beautiful location overlooking paddyfields Extremely peaceful location surrounded by nature Pristine swimming pool, clean and cool The very warm welcome given by all staff, we were made to feel very special The wide range of very reasonably priced cocktails The Jacuzzi rooms - new, large, modern, airy, huge balcony, well designed, very luxurious The excellent range and quality of the breakfast The efforts that the excellent staff (Rooms and F & B) went to to make our honeymoon extra special. Particular thanks go to Mr Charminder for the beautiful bouquet and candelit romantic dinner that you arranged for a surprise for my husband. That will stay in our memories always! Also to the fantastic room staff who made up our two bedrooms so beautifully (Jacquzzi and plunge pool)

Review 90:very friendly staff situated in a mango orchard with view onto the paddy fields wonderful long pool ideal for swimming Sri Lankan Food cooked by the Chef was excellent and varied every day

Review 91:Breakfast buffet food tended to be warm, not hot. But this seems to be a common trait for many of the hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka. Outside bath in room was a great feature, but difficult to fill, and looked like it needed cleaning.

Review 92:Great pool, and massage facilities. Very relaxing, interesting grounds with all grown produce.

Review 93:Strong humidity in this part of Sri Lanka and the rooms had a slightly humide 'smell' (I assume from the curtains). Though I assume this is unavoidable due to the surounding vegetation.

Review 94:Beautiful Garden with Papaya and Banana plantages. Large room with all facilities. Very good service.

Review 95:The room provided was with a very small shower and WC space. The toilet had very basic finish. The water would not drain. We had to change the room in between.

Review 96:Well built resort, idyllic settings

Review 97:The way the rooms, or the buildings where they are, were laid out in the resort was not presented in the website. We didn't know it was detached from the clubhouse. Breakfast choices were limited.

Review 98:We like the clubhouse area where the pool and restaurant is. The rooms are nice and have adequate facilities. The staff and manager are friendly and efficient.

Review 99:Bathroom stank of rotting cabbage. Food very poor. Stalked by jewellery seller every time you go near the restaurant. Poor reflexology. They forgot it is a foot massage. Not leg.

Review 100:The hotel was spectacular looking and the pool is long enough to actually swim

Review 101:food was was below standard especially for the price. To many geckos in the rooms. Spa only had a male therapist

Review 102:Nice hotel in the country, with a nice pool, good rooms with a plunge bath outside

Review 103:The prices are too high, the spa is with only one massagist (a men) andthe date of cosmetics is expired

Review 104:Very nice location with a big perfect garden, big swimming pool, thehotel is really close to Dambulla. The stuff is very nice and helpfull

Review 105:Loved everything about it - the friendly staff, the beautiful setting, the closeness to the major attractions, the spa treatments, the food andnot to forget the spacious and bright rooms!!! A haven of peace andquiet to come back to after a day of sightseeing or for an extendedweekend stay to unwind!

Review 106:a bit far from the city, disapointing breakfast, the pay-by-card machine did not work so we had to get back to the city for an ATM and lost an hour and the cost of the tuktuk ride...

Review 107:the place is great, the staff is nice

Review 108:Over All, its good. But needs improvement, to catch up the next level in my rating

Review 109:Ambiance, staff, location, and food were great. Message was amazing

Review 110:Lack of attention to detail, especially with regard to the cleanliness of our bathroom.

Review 111:Great gardens, great pool.

Review 112:- No wifi in room

Review 113:- Quiet location - Great swimming pool - Good restaurant - Friendly staff

Review 114:The location is a bit far away from everything. But you can just relax inside.

Review 115:Good price. Good atmosphere.
