Reviews for Castelo Santa Catarina
Review 1:I was expected a little bit more from the breakfast. Although the dining room is beautifull, the space is quite small and the food could be more diversified.
Review 2:I liked it a lot the location, in a real castel with a beautifull garden and not so far away from the main points in Porto.
Review 3:Staff at the reception is not overly friendly. There was heavy rain during our stay in the tower and we had a flood in the room.
Review 4:Very pretty house with furniture in style. It's like a step back in time. From the room up in the tower the views over the city are actually very good. Breakfast is nice.
Review 5:I came across this hotel because I wanted to enjoy the new years eve in Porto center, so the location was excellent. I was quite surprised with the discipline and the precision of leaving the hotel at 12:00, after one of the nights where it's supposed to party until late. I was quite conscious and gave a ring at 11:50 to the reception, because I overslept and asking to leave around 12:30... Well, as explained from the staff we had to leave as soon as soon as possible as there was other reservation for that day. As Portuguese and as an often traveler and being on many other Portuguese hotels, this attitude does not comply with the good sense and with the general sympathy and relaxed view from a Portuguese Hotel staff. I stayed in other hotel on the 30th and when I asked the check out I was told at 12:00 but "no worries, take your time" and the room was special as it had a balcony, so I was relaxed and left the room around 11:30, with no kind of any pressure. Unfortunately when I am taking holidays I am not expecting any stress - and this case after the new years eve I was expecting good sense from the staff as it is normal that customers might leave the room later, but that's my view along with my experience even on more rated hotels, so I found this "discipline" on the check out time quite rare on the normal relaxed and good welcoming place for Tourists around other hotels in Portugal.
Review 6:Good Location, good facilities and beautiful garden
Review 7:I think the quality of the room I stayed in is not worth the price per night. The bathroom could use a bit of a renovation, the bathtub is tiny, the wi-fi signal barely reached the room, and the TV only had 4 channels.
Review 8:I liked the overall looks of the hotel, the room was spacious and the beds are super comfortable. It is a beautiful charm hotel with friendly staff.
Review 9:Internet was unfortunately not working. Hygiene could have been better. Dust here and there.
Review 10:Quietly located yet near centre. Availability of free parking. Nice garden/terrace. Breakfast was outstanding.
Review 11:We made a very late booking due to an emergency and the staff couldn't have been more helpful in every way. A beautiful setting and an amazing dining room and breakfast. This was our second visit and we enjoyed it as much as the first time.
Review 12:Loads of charm. Lovely gardens. Period furniture. Our family suite included a small salon, so we weren't stuck in our bedrooms. We felt at home here. Handy for the metro. Set back away from main road.
Review 13:Difficulty with wifi. Staff expect it to soon be rectified. Went to corner cafe for free wifi. Coffee & orange juice not the same quality as the rest of the breakfast. Be aware that some rooms are up many flights of stairs.
Review 14:Sumptuous surroundings - very castle-like. A garden oasis amidst well-worn city streets. Comfortable walk to Centro. Free parking an asset. Staff particularly eager to assist guests. Great atmosphere. Breakfast extensive.
Review 15:This hotel is in a great location. 15 minutes walk to the centre of city. Old world but with new rooms added leading into a garden. Great breakfast. Young Man on reception excellent and most helpful.
Review 16:castel catarina at the top of a hill good to walk down but taxi a must if you don`t feel like walking.
Review 17:spacious quiet garden room.tea making facilities in room.good blackout curtains and large tinted windows .
Review 18:If you're expecting a 4-star hotel, or anything like the website and the reviews indicate, you're in for a disappointment. We were. We rented a suite, and both bedrooms were small, and without any charm whatsoever (shabby furniture, no window in one of the rooms.) The third room of the suite was an entrance hall with 3 chairs and a TV over the door that you couldn't watch without getting a crick in your neck. All this for 100 Euros (the off-season price), which was way too much. The hotel was far away from the center of things (at least a 6 Euro cab ride away), and not in a nice district. I love Porto, but I'll never stay here again.
Review 19:The castle itself is nice, with beautiful tiles and gardens. Breakfast was very good and served in an opulent salon. The staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and the bed was quite comfortable.
Review 20:Not exactly in the city center so maybe not the best option if you dont have a car The heating in our room was automatic and only went off at 19º which means that heating does not work if you are at 20º...
Review 21:Excelent service from the staff The place itself is excelent and very unique even though i think it could be explored more
Review 22:Our room was on the third floor in the tower - walk up - was a bit of a pain dragging all the suitcases up. Would have been nice to have an elevator. Our room was rather small - although peeking into other rooms we saw larger spaces with upgraded bathrooms. ours was old and very squishy. It may pay to spend a little more money and get a superior room
Review 23:Very unusual accommodations, full of charm and flavor. Location was good - walking distance to center, but a rigorous walk back - which we managed to do a number of times. Breakfast was held in a lovely room full of old quirky furniture - was lots of fun just to eat in that room.
Review 24:Nothing.
Review 25:This is a beautiful secluded castle with antique charm. We stayed in the grand suite at the top of the castle tower which gave us wonderful views. The hotel also offers a well priced wine list. So enjoy a good bottle sitting in the wonderful garden.
Review 26:It was a bit cold at night (mid-Autumn). Breakfast was average considering it's a 4 star.
Review 27:The building, specially the breakfast and lounge rooms, and gardens are beautiful.
Review 28:Nothing to not like. Close to Metro
Review 29:Great, beautiful property, staff very friendly, lovely room, very good breakfast. Excellent place to stay in Porto
Review 30:Lovely friendly staff who recommended a really good restaurant for the evening. Fantastic breakfast of fresh fruit, selection of breads and pastries, cooked eggs and bacon as well as cereals and a selection of hot drinks.
Review 31:This charming Castle is a unique experience. The outrageously baroque decor includes massive chandlers, carved wooden walls, flocked wallpaper and opulent furniture. Our large room had a comfortable bed with cool lined sheets and a marble bathroom with lots of hot water. The excellent breakfast is served in a large dining room. The staff is friendly, efficient and helpful. Only two blocks uphill to the metro station or a ten minute walk downhill to the centre of Porto.
Review 32:Hotel is in a slightly seedy area of Porto. Many abandoned buildings nearby and no nice restaurants. Either long walk up and down a very steep hill or take taxis
Review 33:We had a lovely modern room near the gardens. Best shower of our trip. Breakfast is served in an over-the-top Victorian room with flocked wallpaper and huge chandelier. Staff very helpful.
Review 34:Truly a castle experience! Our room was so ornate down to very small details and it was unlike any place we've stayed before. The chandeliers were gorgeous and the tiling in the hallways was stunning! Very friendly staff who provided a simple, small map of the city with high lights to visit during our stay.
Review 35:Pictures on website only showed old part. Should show some new as it would represent true picture. Which was good.
Review 36:Large bedRoom & shower brand new, dinning room more what we Exspected by pictures. But we got best of both worlds. Overall good value. Free parking an advantage. Bit quirky
Review 37:Nothing to dislike although narrow steep stairs could be a problem.
Review 38:The staff were very friendly. The building was really fasinating to stay in. But worth it to stay in the main house.Views from the 3rd floor were stunning after climbling the stairs! The breakfast room was amazing and so too was the breakfast. Great safe parking facilities. A couple of restaurants nearby.
Review 39:Not many restauants in the area. Metro is 2 blocks away.
Review 40:Beautiful hotel with fabulous tiles. Staff was excellent. Breakfast was outstanding. Standard rooms are very small. No elevators inside the hotel, but front desk staff are very accommodating at carrying luggage up & down the stairs.
Review 41:Hotel is located close (5 mins) to metro station. Having arrived at midnight, on our way from metro station we had to pass couple of prostitutes on the Santa Catarina street - we did not feel very safe, at that precise moment. At daylight, location is fine, with nice and friendly snack bar just round the corner. Access to the rooms from main reception is through a very narrow and steep staircase. Internet connection quality fluctuates.
Review 42:Furnishing is a question of taste, but it certainly required more than a bit of effort to put all the pieces together to make the final impression. Having this experience, I know I wouldn't want to live in a chateau - but it was worth a try. Very good breakfast with a selection of sweet (baked) and salty options. Nice secluded garden, where one can enjoy small refreshments(beer/wine) served by the staff, in the sunshine.
Review 43:Loved the quaint and charming Castle. Location is quite close to the center of Porto (about 10 mins walk or a couple of stops by Metro). Excellent front desk staff - very knowledgeable and helpful about Porto. Provided some excellent sightseeing and dining suggestions.
Review 44:Unfortunately Porto is not the cleanest of cities so the walk from the hotel was hazardous re dog deposits.
Review 45:Staff couldnt do enough for us, giving advice and providing transport tickets. Great building and nice garden area. Motorbike parking for us was fab!
Review 46:A long way down to catch red bus but easy by metro once you know where to go and how to buy a ticket. A friendly local helped out but staff could provide more info
Review 47:The room at the top. Great natural ventilation and 360 views including a sunset.
Review 48:Only negative comment I would make is that the garden rooms are concrete and metal boxes. These are entirely unsympathetic with the design of the rest of the property.
Review 49:Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff in a unique property. The castelo is only a couple of minutes walk from the metro which whizzes you to the city centre in 5 minutes. Immaculately clean rooms.
Review 50:Knew there was no lift to the "tower" but didn't realize how many stairs there would be. Worth the climb, however. The Santa Catarina street between the castello and downtown quite run-down, understand that some renovations will be coming.
Review 51:Loved the antiques in our room (royal suite)--2 rooms with massive wood carved bed, dressers, armoire. Beautiful old-fashioned fixtures in large bathroom. The staff was great, the tiles on the old building so impressive. Breakfast excellent. We weren't driving but for someone who needed parking in the city, it looked like it was available.
Review 52:It's not in the center, but not much of a problem: The hotel is located about 15 minutes downhill to the Old Town, and half of it is in a nice area. There is a nearby subway station and taxi cost us 6 Euros from city center back, at night time.
Review 53:A stunning place! we've got a suite (room 122) that was beautiful and spacious. Breakfast is good, and the staff is friendly and helpful.
Review 54:Needs a bit more car parking space;difficult I know in the city.
Review 55:Value for money so close to the city centre. The room and en suite were spendid. The furnishings and style of the interior of the main house,The staff were excellent.Excellent breakfast.
Review 56:We had the room in the 4th floor of the "castle", in the tower. An amazing 360 degree view - however you had to work hard to get to it, walking up 4 flights of stairs. The staff at the hotel were great - very helpful. We had 2 bikes delivered and luggage picked up - they organised all that for us with no issues whatsoever.
Review 57:Nothing I loved it
Review 58:Location was great with the metro a ten minute walk away , staff were lovely, place is beautiful . Lots of useful information to help you get around from staff. Breakfast was a good variety . Steep stairs in the hotel itself so mobility could be an issue for some but there is a lift up to the grounds and there's accomodation in the grounds too
Review 59:Barking dogs were annoying and be aware that there is no elevator, not a problem for us but could be a problem for some.
Review 60:Old restored castle home on a beautiful, private landscaped grounds. The rooms are comfortable but not elegant. This property is a very good value.
Review 61:This is the second time we have stayed here & once again it did not disappoint us. We stayed in the Royal Suite which was a wonderful experience, lots of original late 19th C /early 20th C furniture& 2 rooms !! views over the sunken garden, towards the river & also the patio area. There are now brand new rooms in the garden area very modern & well equipped, useful if stairs are an issue. Our motorcycle was parked in a secure area covered by CCTV cameras which was very reassuring. Staff were amazing, especially Mario whose English was excellent & remembered us from last year. Breakfast was very good. A brisk walk downhill to the river was achievable & either a taxi or the metro back (yellow line to Marques & a short walk downhill to the hotel ) or a bus which stops right outside ( number 732) Once again I had a private viewing of the tiny Church which is gorgeous. A lovely quiet location. The original blue tiles are beautiful.
Review 62:Breakfast could have more choices. Our room had some minor aspects in need for renovation (but nothing special).
Review 63:We loved this place, a very romantic spot. The garden are simply wonderful decorated with neoclassic sculptures and the wall paper and decorated ceilings... It is like traveling to another time.
Review 64:Nothing
Review 65:Fantastic historic property on the edge of all major tourist sites in Porto. Excellent breakfast, friendly staff and pleasant gardens in the midst of the city.
Review 66:The building is beautiful and certainly not typical of the places we normally stay in.The photos do not do the property justice. Porto is a very exciting and interesting city and the hotel is within easy reach of these major sights
Review 67:I was a little disappointed about the fact that the garden rooms are so modern and not at all in line with the "castello" theme. In this rooms light comes in through the main door as it is basically a glass door making it a little bit difficult to sleep. It would be great if the door had some sort of blinds. Though the hotel can be easily reached with the metro, the walk to the downtown takes a bit and the surroundings do not offer many options for dinner or drinks.
Review 68:The rooms are comfortable and spacious as is the bed. The personnel is friendly and there is a metro station nearby.
Review 69:The shower courtain was not clean.
Review 70:The hotel building is beautiful. The location is not very far from city center, about 10 minutes of walking. The parking is free.
Review 71:The location is quite a bit away fom the center of town. However taxis were very reasonable. The wifi only worked at reception area - not in the bedrooms.
Review 72:The room was very modern and update. It was a very quiet room and the beds were comfortable. The gardens of the castle are lovely with lots of tables and chairs to sit. The breakfast was outstanding with lots of choices. Free parking at the hotel and the staff (all shifts) was exceptional and very helpful.
Review 73:We've spent a great time in Castelo Santa Catarina. The staff was always smiling and willing to answer all of our questions. The rooms are spacious and clean, breakfast buffet offering a wide variety of dishes. If I were to visit Porto ever again would choose the place without any hesitation.
Review 74:Beautiful quirky hotel with lovely period features and helpful friendly staff. Do ask to see the chapel, it's a real gem. It's a short walk to the main centre of Porto, and the immediate area is poor, but there are cafes, restaurants and a supermarket nearby.
Review 75:No bad experiences, but the hotel could benefit from its own restaurant, I'm sure it would do well, romantic meals out in the garden!
Review 76:Lovely property with full of character, lovely gardens, it was too tempting just to chill out with a bottle of Vinho Verde each evening! Staff are friendly, very helpful and professional. Excellent location, peaceful nights sleep, but still close to most the attractions and sites. We stayed in one of the newly refurbished garden rooms. Perhaps not as much character as staying in the castle itself, nevertheless very clean and comfortable room. In particular the shower was excellent. And last but not least the excellent breakfast, a selection of meats, cheese, breads etc., my favourite was the Portuguese Custard tarts!
Review 77:Location a little out of centre, uphill.
Review 78:Wonderfully helpful staff with good suggestions. Beautiful grounds and building, tulip wood parquet flooring was exceptional. A very interesting place to stay with the best breakfast of our trip.
Review 79:- breakfast was poor - we found mould on the cheese one morning - slightly far from the city center
Review 80:- amazing staff - calm area - very nice accommodation
Review 81:It's not centrally located so have to walk or take taxi to river and restaurants but worth the effort.
Review 82:This is an awesome property in an old castle with amazing antique furniture, very helpful staff and a huge buffet breakfast.
Review 83:The castle rooms are small. Wifi was not strong
Review 84:We stayed in a garden room with great air conditioning & king bed. As we had a car, the free parking and the metro being only 200 Mtrs away was a perfect combination.
Review 85:We loved the grounds. What a pleasure to walk over to the castle in that beautiful garden for a wonderful breakfast! The staff were polite and helpful with our questions
Review 86:Garden, views, atmosphere, and fantastic shower!
Review 87:Nothing. Everything was great.
Review 88:The grounds are beautiful!! Felt like you are staying in a real castle. Quiet and peaceful. And the staff were so so nice and helpful! We stayed in one of the newer rooms in the back and it was really top of the line. This is amazing value for what you pay. We stayed 2 nights because of time. I easily would have stayed a week here, just in the hotel!
Review 89:The Castelo is a lovely building with pretty gardens surrounding it. It was very quiet with free parking for the car. The room had tea making facilities and air conditioning.
Review 90:The only fault you could say is the walk back from the centre is all uphill but there is a metro station about 100 metres away for those less enegetic.
Review 91:The style and setting of the hotel was just so different that it will leave an indellible memory. Although the property is quite old it is very well maintained and spotlessly clean.
Review 92:Beautiful building, we stayed in the Grand Suite which is in the tower of the castle and easily accessible unless you have mobility issues. The bed linen is very good quality. The suite also has an ante room with wardrobes and a table and chairs as well as an excellent bathroom, with the best shower we have seen. The suite offers 4 panoramic views of the city and the breakfast, served in an opulent dining room, is generous and very good. The staff are kind, friendly and knowledgeable. Excellent.
Review 93:it's a 20 minute walk from ribiera (riverside) but all downhill. you don't want to walk back, but taxi is about 8 euros or yellow line metro to marques and a five minute walk downhill. the metro is inexpensive and excellent although buying tickets causes everyone problems, big tip when you take metro from airport you need to keep blue tickets and these are recharged , however once in porto you will be recharging with different priced tickets ! confused? don't worry, everywhere we went the locals were only too happy to help. guess they had same problems once...
Review 94:the hotel was superb, nice terraced gardens, and we had one of the garden rooms. full air conditioning lovely power shower (if the controls take a bit of ingenuity) and lovely comfortable king sized beds, the staff were all excellent and helpful, the breakfast more than enough to keep you going for a few hours. the riverside area at ribiera is excellent, we had a lovely evening just buying a couple of bottle of vino verdhe from one of the shops and sitting outside supping these. the owner even brings olives and local cheese, marvellous!
Review 95:If it worries you, some of the fittings and decor are a bit dated, but in my view this is what gives the hotel its character. It is a long walk into the city and waterfront, but it is downhill. Take our tip and get a taxi back!
Review 96:Staying in a castle is a treat. The atmosphere, character, look and feel are terrific. The outside spaces are very pleasant on a warm evening.
Review 97:The 360 degree view from the highest rooms in the old part of the hotel were magnificent, all round Porto to the Atlantic. Location excellent, best to use the metro for return travel as this is a hotel up the hill from the main areas. Staff very efficient and friendly.
Review 98:Cool! We have a nice time in this beautiful place! The excellent staff, comfortable room, elegant furnishings, good breakfast. It is convenient location for all sorts of transportation and walking. We'll definitely come back here!
Review 99:Amazing architecture, very warm friendly helpful staff, beautiful gardens. Like living in a fairytale castle. The manager showed us inside the chapel which was also amazing.
Review 100:Perhaps a refrigerator would be good in the room.
Review 101:I liked most the big room, the comfortable bed and bed linen, the cleanliness, the garden, the unique building and the breakfast.
Review 102:This is such a unique hotel! It's very charming and we loved the detail in all the rooms. The staff was superb. No frills in terms of amenities, but it has everything you need. There's not a whole lot of restaurant options nearby, but it's a short walk to the metro (which is really good in Porto). Would definitely stay here again!
Review 103:When we booked we thought we were getting near the water. It said 'some rooms have a water vie'. This was misleading. We walked an hour to get to the river. Avenida Santa Catarina, the street of the hotel is in a depressed area which didn't feel safe at night. We left after one night and lost the second night's fee.
Review 104:Very new, clean room The tiles and architecture were whimsical
Review 105:Everything, especially the building itself, both inside and outside. The staff were all extremely helpful and we were made to feel very comfortable and welcome. They could not do enough for us.
Review 106:There is no elevator, so suitcases have to be carried up flights of stairs, if in an upper story room. Lower lobby area was a construction zone due to some remodeling, but I'm sure it will look nice when completed.
Review 107:Unique, castellated historical building with tiled exterior. Period furniture to match the interior décor. Surrounded by a small, pleasant garden.
Review 108:The staff were very friendly and made us feel at home. The breakfast was good and the breakfast room was amazing. The place makes you want to linger and its very good value. Fully recommend it.
Review 109:beautiful interior and excellent facilities. First class bathroom and impressive air conditioning and heating options.Parking on site and free wifi. Very helpful English speaking staff!
Review 110:Not the hotel's fault but the neighborhood had a run-down and unsafe feeling. The shower's tile floor was very slippery.
Review 111:The room was huge and traditionally decorated but the bathroom was modern. The staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great. Convenient walk to metro and city attractions.
Review 112:The weather - but if Mario could have changed it for us, he would have!
Review 113:A really unique hotel with marvellous staff, excellent breakfast, good location, comfy beds and fabulous chandeliers! Loved it all.
Review 114:Narrow stairs to the upper rooms but the staff carried our bags.
Review 115:Wonderful old building with period furnishings- very atmospheric. Very helpful staff. Parking on site. They seem to be building a modern extension at the back(no noise though) which would rather miss the point of staying here.
Review 116:nothing bothered much for a short stay... however the water pressure in shower and the number of electric plugs in the room can be a bit more....
Review 117:The friendly and helpful front desk, the period features of the hotel, the architecture and definitely the breakfast
Review 118:The Castelo was very attractive --- beautiful tiles, parquet floors, chandeliers, and paneling -- and the parking on site was a great plus. Staff was welcoming and helpful, Metro was nearby, breakfast was very good, and in elegant surroundings.
Review 119:Some of the stairs are quite narrow and make it rather difficult to handle suitcases. This facility has four different levels without an elevator and would be difficult to access for elderly and/or handicapped.
Review 120:Very helpful staff at the front desk.
Review 121:Bathroom badly in need of a repaint and decor.
Review 122:The reception staff were helpful. Dining room very clean and adequate choice of food. Castle full of original furniture and decor. c
Review 123:Friendly staff, carefully preserved historic items, beautiful view to the garden.
Review 124:When you go sightseeing very often you watch the pieces of furniture the nobels of the past have been using. You would ask yourself, how does it feel to live in such conditions. Stay in Santa Catarina gives you a perfect answer to this question! You are surrounded by the atmosphere of the past. This is a unique experience you wouldn't find in a modern hotel.
Review 125:There is no lift and the beautiful balcony off the third floor is unusable , what a shame .
Review 126:Once we found the property we were relieved to leave the car in their great little parking area and explore . The hotel is charming and the employees are helpful and a relaxed sort of cheerful ( much appreciated after finding our way into the city ). We headed downhill and it's an easy ten minute walk to the center . Breakfast was very nice in the ornate dining room . Our sons room ( we had two rooms, party of four ) was extra nice with a beautiful chandelier and darling balcony . My husband and I were happy to be on the first floor since there is no lift .
Review 127:Mario was extremely kind & helpfull. His tip for a good restaurant was most welcome. The room was large, amazing shower (we want one just like that ;-). The Castle is a piece of art, with azulejos & a nice garden. Just amazing.
