Reviews for Albergo Eremo Gaudio

Review 1:The breakfast experience was lacking. Too many pastries and cold cuts, not enough healthy alternatives aside from yogurt and muesli.

Review 2:The staff was friendly and accommodating. The view was beautiful. I would stay again and this time in the suites accessible by the lift. Gorgeous views and a value for the money.

Review 3:The beds aren't the most comfortable I've slept on and the walk up the mountain to get to the hotel is pretty brutal.

Review 4:The view of the hotel is amazing! Great place to relax and the glass elevator to the top of the mountain is really cool. The staff are friendly and speak great English.

Review 5:The location was beautiful, woke up every morning to an amazing view of the lake! It didn't bother us at all that it was a bit out of the way, we really enjoyed the walk up the hill.

Review 6:Funicular has no shelter if you are awaiting it in the rain.

Review 7:Fabulous, somewhat quaint, quirky place hanging on a mountain side in a quieter, more "authentic" part of Lake Como (Varenna). Views are simply amazing, and rooms seem to vary widely, as to size, frills and amenities. Trailhead to a short walk to a mountaintop castle ruins @hotel parking lot. Very easy access to ferries to all points on Lake Como. Good restaurants nearby in the town below.

Review 8:Room very buggy with gnats and mosquitos because no screen on balcony doors. For the price, we should have stayed closer into Varenna, which was a very cute and friendly village. Really disappointing experience!

Review 9:Great view but very long walk from train station....all uphill. They had a sign at train station that mislead us to think it was close by. It was about a 20 min walk.

Review 10:No complaints.

Review 11:This hotel is an adventure in itself. Riding the funicular up to our room was very exciting. A lot of history connected to the hotel. We had a nice, very clean room on the 5th floor with a balcony with a beautiful view overlooking Lake Como. The staff was very friendly and helpful with directions. The breakfast was excellent. The hotel is a short uphill climb from the center of town. Know this in case you have a walking problem. Would definitely stay here again and for a longer period of time. Loved Lake Como.

Review 12:The hotel had wonderful views of Lake Como and the town of Varenna. A beautiful old monastery up on the hillside - but a short easy walk to the center of town.

Review 13:Breakfast selection good not great. Overall breakfast is still a good value for the price.

Review 14:Great views from everywhere in the hotel. Not too far from town. Hotel is directly on the hiking trail to some picturesque destinations up the hills above town. Empty fridges in the room for guest use a plus. Hotel staff very helpful-stored some perishables for us on the day we were checking out.

Review 15:Dragging suitcases up from ferry dock and no taxi's nearby. Unhelpful staff on ferry dock very dismissive when we asked.

Review 16:Amazing hotel set on a hill with beautiful views of the lake. We were on lower level but next time would ask for upper level accessible by outside Finicular. Fantastic breakfast and staff very helpful

Review 17:The room we were in was clean and comfortable and had an incredible view. Varenna was our favorite town on Lake Como. Wonderful staff and nice breakfast and dinner

Review 18:The staff was extremely helpful from suggesting restaurants to calling taxis to scheduling a massage. We couldn't be more pleased with an innkeeper within a moderate price range. Lower level balcony room with lake view

Review 19:Room was a bit sparse. We had to move on our last night and the shower was crazy small. No way I could have shaved my legs in there breakfast was ok. Very processed and no fresh fruit to speak of. Same thing every am sweet breads boiled eggs and sliced meat and cheese. Staff seemed put out by our request for a glass of ice and to try to put on the air conditioning. It never worked but luckily the night became cool

Review 20:Location was great. Views amazing Value good . Staff very helpful and friendly for the most part. This hotel is a walk from the main part of town so be ware of the fact you will have to walk uphill back as night. We rather enjoyed walking back after our meals.

Review 21:Quite a walk up the hill from town - but good exercise! Breakfast was a little bland - in the land of oranges why can't one find fresh orange juice anywhere? Selection of pastries but mostly synthetic. Good coffee.

Review 22:Amazing views from bedroom and breakfast terrace. Funicular train to rooms higher up.

Review 23:At the last minute we had an option to upgrade to a room with a large balcony/terrace- we're so glad we said yes! The room was small but functional, but the outdoor space and view were a fantastic plus.

Review 24:Be aware that the hotel is perched on the side of a mountain, and the drive up to it is about a half mile on a VERY narrow paved street, which overhangs the side of the hill. There is parking at the top (a real plus!), but this drive is not for anyone with phobia about heights and falling!

Review 25:Locate up the side of a hill overlooking Lake Como. Gorgeous view at all hours! Easy walk to town to see the local sites, where one can get car or passenger ferry to other towns. Room and bath were large, clean, adequately furnished, but not luxury. There is a funicular up to a chapel and other walks one can take from the hotel.

Review 26:Bed was old and uncomfortable, air conditioning was weak and could not be controlled from the room (we came during a heat wave), narrow steep road to the hotel can be stressful if there is one or more cars coming from the other direction (it is only wide enough for one car).

Review 27:Their aren't too many hotels with a better location of the lake. A bonus with your stay is that you get to ride an elevator up to get an even better view. The hotel is close to Varenna town and with the car and passenger ferry it is very easy to get to Bellagio and Menagio.

Review 28:If was still pretty over priced I think. But we were still very happy. The staff was a bit rude.

Review 29:The hotel was beautiful. The property was very unique and had a beautiful view. The food was amazing and had one of the best continental breakfasts i've had.

Review 30:You pay for views in this hotel. For us it was 100% worth it.

Review 31:** hotel with ****** views. It seems that views are great from all rooms, but they are really excellent from superior rooms. We have 2 cable elevators and 1 elevator till our room on the last floor. We didn't mind, but someone can be annoyed with spending about 5 min for just getting from the room to the breakfast. Basic rooms, but clean and with everything that could be needed. Breakfast was the same every day, no fresh fruits or vegetables, basic, but quite ok overall. We went around Como lake, and Varenna seems the best city to stay. Calm, authenic, with some great restaurants, good transportation (trains, ferries), but relatively less touristic than Bellagio or Mennagio, for example.

Review 32:It is a bit of an uphill walk up if you arrive by train, take a taxi.

Review 33:The views were fantastic. Quirky, fun funicular up to upper rooms was exciting every time. The rooms are pretty plain but the views from our balcony made it well worth it. Used to be a hermitage.

Review 34:I have to go to the room upstairs by my self I have to look for the room by my self food also not much just like salad

Review 35:Location very nice view so beautiful room upstairs very good view

Review 36:The ac in the room needed a boost. In the menu of the restaurant there were no main courses other than pasta. Some fish or meat would make it more complete

Review 37:The view from the terrace is simply breathtaking. Also the visit to the eremo (where the suites rooms are located) was very nice. The breakfast is amazing and the staff is very helpful and kind.

Review 38:Nothing bad to say. It is a bit of a walk into town, but you walk a lot in Italy. Dinner was just "okay", very simple but also very affordable. Breakfast wasn't much, but that is typical of Europe.

Review 39:Very friendly staff, cute and clean room with a million dollar view! Right on the trail to the Castello (actually worth the hike and 4e to get in). We loved the town of Varenna, even more than Bellagio.

Review 40:Our room was practically on top of the mountain, with a large balcony that overlooked both "legs" of Lake Como. The elevator rides were incredible. They are really a combination of a funicular and elevator with a glass side looking out to the lake. Breakfast was generous and good, and the staff were all very friendly, helpful and knowlegable about the area and hiking paths.

Review 41:The wifi was not available in our room.

Review 42:The view was pretty great, perfect terrace for a glass of wine at the end of the night, the hotel was nice and quiet.

Review 43:The hotel has a private lift that allows the entire lake can be seen as altitudes, which could only be a part. So beautiful, magical and almost fabulous panoramic abounds. A small chapel at the top and a large terrace is simply irreplaceable.

Review 44:The evening food wasn't brilliant, quality just wasn't what we had thought it would be but then again it was only a three star so I guess it should have been expected.

Review 45:The view was just amazing beautifully set high above lake Como with stunning views of the whole lake, Varenna and other towns around the lake! Was just a perfect view.

Review 46:Absolutely nothing. We were by car, so we just drove thru the uphill road. But we also parked the car and walked down to Town and on the way back we walk up the steep road. It was ok if taking it slow and not rushing.. Some people may not like it with luggages. In this case please take a taxi, it is anyway cheap. When you arrive in the hotel, you will understand that it is worthy !!

Review 47:We have been to Lake Como several times, but this was the best time we spent ever. Stunning view from the rooms and terrace(s). Fantastic idea building the fenicular to the top building. Staff were very kind, provide you all the information you need. Our room was cooled by A/C when we arrive afternoon outside temp was 35°C. A/C worked thru the night. Breakfast was successful. Wifi really works everywhere !!!! The town Varenna is absolutely lovely, if you are by car easy access by Car-Ferry from Menaggio or Bellagio... If you travel with boat, there are also several alternatives. The key point you must consider is " do a reservation" if you want to eat by the lake side or in the center. There would be no tables remain free on the weekends. Free car parking is also good advantage. I would definetely go there again.

Review 48:If you have a severe fear of heights, there is a steep cable cart ride (glass walls) up to the rooms. Breakfast was fantastic but there wasn't a lot of food and it finished at 10am! Very early check out.

Review 49:Stunning views, air conditioning , friendly staff and great location :) the perfect get away.

Review 50:Air condition's were shut down at midnight and won't be start working till afternoon. We told reception that we woke up and we were swetting beacause of heat at the top floors they said it's hotel policy regarding AC. I won't recommend you this otel's top floors.

Review 51:We stayed at the top floor room 202 which has a great view.

Review 52:The view from our room was unbelievably beautiful. The dining room served a very good dinner at value price and the restaurant was outdoors with an expansive view of Lake Como. Breakfast was excellent. Plan on taking a taxi from the railroad station if you have luggage, otherwise expect what we would call a significant uphill hike. All worth it for the view!

Review 53:It is a bit of a trek up the mountain to get to, but worth the view. A $10 taxi can save you the walk. The walk is manageable for folks who are OK walking for 20 minutes.

Review 54:The view is amazing...especially off the balcony

Review 55:We couldn't have had a better stay at this hotel. The rooms are simple but have everything that you need and are very clean. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the continental breakfast offered each morning was delicious. We also really enjoyed the location; the hotel is peaceful and quiet but also only a 10-minute walk from the main part of Varenna. The best part about the hotel is the view. It is spectacular! We would definitely stay here again.

Review 56:We didn't know they turned the a/c off at midnight "for our health". Would have rather paid a little more to sleep comfortably.

Review 57:Staff very friendly and helful. Very nice to be able to dine on the premises. Gorgeous view from our room.

Review 58:No problems

Review 59:This hotel had spectacular views of the lake. We stayed in the lower portion of the hotel under the registration and eating facilities, but that did not affect the comfort and relaxing atmosphere of the room. The staff was very helpful and gave good advice on where to go. Belagio was splendid as was downtown Varenna. We enjoyed the villa gardens just below the hotel.

Review 60:The very steep climb from the town to the hotel would challenge even a young couple, which we are not. Taking three funicular/elevators to get to our room was unusual. The room was spartan - my husband, who is 6'3" could not raise his arms to wash in the minuscule shower. We weren't able to unpack our suitcases for our three day stay because there were no drawers.

Review 61:The view from our room on the 6th level was spectacular.

Review 62:This hotel boasts one of the best views ever - perched high above the lake and looking west over the lake towards Bellagio and the mountains. Go just for the view, but be pleasantly surprised by the hotel itself. The rooms are comfortable, the continental breakfast is served on the terrace (and that view again) and the staff are friendly and helpful. It's a short walk up and out of town, but nothing too strenuous. The in-house restaurant menu is a little limited, but most guests will enjoy the many restaurants in town during the day and only be looking for a light dinner anyway. Prices are very reasonable and servings generous.

Review 63:Huono aamiainen, yksinkertainen aamiainen.

Review 64:Rauhallinen varsinkin jos oli ylimmänkerroksen näköalahuuoneissa. Näköala uskomaton. Järven ilta aurinko puoli

Review 65:The bed was pretty uncomfortable, you could feel all the springs. The location is a bit of a challenge (although there are benefits to being away from town). Not exactly close to train or ferry stations...and uphill. Was a tough walk with luggage but was an easy 30 min walk downhill to train station when leaving.

Review 66:View was amazing as well as the staff. When do you stay at a hotel with it's own funicular? Wifi was great and the room was spotless. The balcony was a great place to sit and reflect. Being able to stare out at the view from bed was also amazing.

Review 67:air conditioning was not working when we arrived and it was stuffy and warm in the room. The partial open door for ventilation was difficult. The staff were not friendly, the person at the desk when we checked in was rude.

Review 68:The location, the views from patio were spectacular! There was a storm the second day, the lightening jumping across the lake was magical.

Review 69:No aircon

Review 70:Pics over sell the place , actual hotel where you will likely be staying is average at best. Aircon almost non existent .... Impossible to sleep in the heat in summer without!

Review 71:We were not given directions for the funicular and once we were at the first level, we thought we had to walk the remaining floors, one of our party did. The hotel didn't volunteer any local info. Taxi driver told us about the holiday and festivities in town.

Review 72:The views, the staff, all the areas to sit, the terrace off our room...almost everything. The climb up the hill , 2 funiculars and another elevator made getting to your room challenging but then you look at the view and forget the challenges.

Review 73:Can't really say i didn't like anything about the property. Lacking a kettle in the room, so i could not have a cup of tea, was the only thing I missed. Be aware that the hotel is high up on the hillside and if the lift should not work there is a lot of steps to walk up as it has 6 floors. We were lucky to get the reception floor which I would highly recommend.

Review 74:I loved the quirkiness of the hotel, fantastic views of the lake and mountains. Staff were very friendly and heloful. A beautiful peaceful place.

Review 75:wine and unimaginative snacks/food

Review 76:Great location but u r out a bit so must like to walk. Guess u could cab. excellent and unique location for the best view in town. Adequate breakfast. Accommodating staff. Restaurant seems to be there for the convenience of guests rather than a place that serves great food and wine.

Review 77:The rooms are very basic, dated and spartan. But then open up the French doors to your petite balcony and the view of Lake Cumo will make up for the decor.

Review 78:The views from the hotel are spectacular. Don't miss the upper terrace- we had strawberries & presecco there as the sunset.

Review 79:The only trouble we had were creepy crawlies...we wanted to keep the windows open, but there were these big centipedes that kept coming in through the windows..eek! There were also some spiders and lizards on the patio, so we would have liked to have had some screens to keep out these crawlies so we could enjoy the cool, clean outside air throughout the night. However, small price to pay for an incredible view and wonderful hotel! :)

Review 80:We were on the 6th floor and had a jaw-dropping view of Lake Como. It was incredible and worth every dollar! We were able to sit out on the patio at night and enjoy looking at the city lights reflect on the water. The rooms were clean. The bathroom and shower were excellent, as was the bed (comfortable). The staff was very friendly and helpful! They had plenty of parking available and the breakfasts were great. Also, the WiFi worked perfectly and was very useful to us. The city of Varenna was so neat - I highly recommend visiting and staying at this hotel.

Review 81:Same breakfast choice each day.Staff in restaurant/bar poorly trained and not educated about the wine list.Wine by the glass very limited, okay at best.White wine not chilled enough, as a result we to go to town to eat and for wine.Would have preferred to dine at the hotel but pasta was the only choice besides ham ,salami and cheese,Great dining area on terrace.

Review 82:Save yourself some trouble and get a taxi from the train station to the hotel. 10 euros is definitely worth it....you'll understand when you see the hill the hotel sits on.

Review 83:Room small like most hotels in Europe.

Review 84:balcony gave added space. Great breakfast buffet. Garden area above hotel was very nice with exceptional views of montarossa and sea. Do go up there.

Review 85:The rooms are very bare and could use an update. All was clean but very boring.

Review 86:Amazing view from our room. Elevator access up the hill to an even better view of the town and lake.

Review 87:Wonderful staff, pleasant and helpful. The location is just breath taking. Situated in a quiet corner of Veranna with 180 degree views of the lake. The drive up to the hotel is something else following a few very narrow streets and up the steep hill. Large parking right next to the hotel.

Review 88:Wonderful view, Alex at the desk was helpful and friendly. Room was basic but clean (although we had a cricket share our room- yes he did manage to keep us up most of the night, despite our frantic search).

Review 89:The walk to the town center is not too far and all down hill. That means the walk back is very uphill. Unfortunately, there was thunder, lightening, and POURED.

Review 90:This was a nice hotel with and with its elevation, there is a nice view. The breakfast was wonderful. Loved the coffee!

Review 91:- Hard bed. Even by European standards, it was pretty hard.

Review 92:- Location was great- Quite - Breakfast included - Free Parking - Amazing vistas and views of lake and mountains.

Review 93:The location is spectacular!!! Views from the room were breathtaking! Although the views from the upper level rooms may be more dramatic, we found the view of the lake from the lower level rooms to be equally beautiful. The rooms are clean and comfy... no frills. Breakfast was good. The staff was warm, friendly and helpful. We totally enjoyed our stay!

Review 94:Having to leave.

Review 95:The views from our Balcony over Lake Como and off to Bellagio, Friendly Staff, Good breakfast, parking, proximity to Varenna and far more relaxing than staying in Bellagio. Varennas Ferrys also made visiting other towns around the lake a breeze.

Review 96:Nothing

Review 97:The setting is breathtaking and the views from the hotel are astounding. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I look forward to visiting again in the future

Review 98:Nothing!

Review 99:Our second visit and we enjoyed this hotel very much. It is situated on a hillside overlooking Lake Como and Varenna and the hills and snow covered peaks. We had a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the lake. All rooms have views! Breakfast is great served in the dining room overlooking the lake...spectacular view and excellent food...cereals, yogurt, meat, cheese, eggs, rolls, bread, cakes and croissants. We walked to the town in ten minutes but anyone with mobility issues should be aware of the uphill climb to the hotel. If you come by car, there is free parking. The staff is very kind and helpful and we highly recommend this hotel.

Review 100:I was glad we could unplug the room fragrance.

Review 101:Very interesting place to stay. Wonderful view from all rooms. Food was better than some have said. Staff was very helpful.

Review 102:After a meal in the town in the evening, the walk uphill was trying for older folk. Some used taxis and we parked in the parking garage at the bottom and picked the car up on the way back. A minor problem, and it wouldn't stop us coming back.

Review 103:The view of the lake from our room was breathtaking, the balcony large. It was so quiet at night as the hotel was away from any thoroughfare. We loved the walk down to the gorgeous town of Varenna and all the alleyways winding through. The cafes on the lake were super. The self-drive funicular from the bottom to the top half of the hotel was a brilliant bonus-what fun! Breakfast was fine, we didn't try the eve. meal as we like going out for food. After visiting other towns along Como we decided we were in the best place and loved our unusual hotel. Parking was plentiful and free.

Review 104:The bathroom was tight.

Review 105:We were in the Belaggio room with private balcony and had a fantastic view of the lake and the town. There were 2 chairs but needs a small table, but we commandeered the bathroom stool for the job. The bed was comfy and there were extra pillows. The weather was unseasonably cool and we left the balcony doors open at night, it was great to wake up to the view from the bed. Some reviews I read said the coffee wasn't good, but I was happy with the selection, they had decaffeinated options, and it tasted good to me.

Review 106:Alexandra on reception was fantastic, very helpful and a joy to see whenever we passed through. Our first visit to an Italian lake and it was very special. The light over the lake changes regularly and no matter what the weather is it looks pretty good. The hotel is in a very peaceful location and the lift up the hill is fantastic. Loved it.

Review 107:Room and bathroom were a bit small, but for the price, you expect it.

Review 108:If you don't like to walk 10 minutes or so to town then this is not the place for you. If you happily walk so that you can awake in the mornings for a spectacular view of Lake Como, this is the place for you!

Review 109:The walk up from the village was strenuous in hot weather so older people should be aware of this, but taken slowly its fine.

Review 110:Room was great with amazing views, I don't think a better view of the lake is possible.I stayed on the upper level accessible via elevators only. Room was very comfortable and the staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. I will definately return.

Review 111:Room was basic. Had a room with a lake view and the view was the best thing about it. Bathroom was very small. No tea and coffee facilities or minibar. Had to bring bags to room ourselves. Dinner in the restaurant had a limited menu and pasta was undercooked. Again, beautiful 180* views in the restaurant. Breakfast was adequate but have had better breakfasts in Italy in similar hotels.

Review 112:Once you get over the drive up the narrow single track to the hotel the views are spectacular. All rooms with balconies have the same view. Friendly welcome on arrival. Going to the upper level on the funicular was a unique experience. Stayed one night which was enough, wouldn't have chosen this hotel for a week.

Review 113:No real restaurant - basically a snack bar (good breakfast though) Long climb from town to the lower level of the hotel (where the funicular starts) A few biting ants in the bedroom

Review 114:Room with terrace overlooking the lake - beautiful views Free hotel parking Funicular lift up the mountainside Varenna is a cool town and a great base for visiting the mid-lake region, including Bellagio

Review 115:If you don't like walking hills it is probably not the place to go as the property is up a steep hill. We had no problems with this as we were aware when we booked

Review 116:Amazing views, great staff, sitting on the terrace drinking really good Italian wine then enjoying a fantastic dinner

Review 117:beautiful view from our room, tarrace, lift

Review 118:The view from the balcony is superb!

Review 119:restaurant was closed because it was out of season

Review 120:Location, size of room

Review 121:The view was spectacular!

Review 122:Walk up the Jill with luggage

Review 123:Location and view phenomenal. Easy walk to city. Breakfast pastries to die for

Review 124:The staff, the location, the breakfast, the views were all outstanding. We were lucky to have gotten a room with a balcony overlooking Lake Como.

Review 125:The view high over Lake Como is amazing.

Review 126:Rooms were a little Spartan

Review 127:Beautiful very and relaxing atmosphere

Review 128:The meager breakfast The thin walls

Review 129:Brilliant position Exquisite panoramas Having 2 panoramic view elevators for the upper terrace
