Reviews for Creel Lodge
Review 1:Creel Lodge is set in beautiful gardens with access to the Tongariro river, has barbeques and outdoor seating in the gardens, all kept up to a high standard. This is the second time we've stayed there and would recommend it to anybody who wants to stay in Turangi.
Review 2:Not easy to find somewhere close at hand to eat at night. The cafe was available fro breakfast and was excellent, perhaps they could do evening meals?
Review 3:Wonderful setting, superb rooms calm and quiet with access to river walks.
Review 4:That we couldn't stay longer as our days were committed.
Review 5:Friendly staff, grounds were well maintained, comfortable room, quiet, and free wifi included was excellent.
Review 6:Beautiful surroundings, clean, tidy and serene. Such a lovely surprise to find Creel Lodge in Turangi! Didn't try the Cafe but went in for a coffee (which was amazing-Supreme) and the food looked fantastic.
Review 7:Beautiful scenery, tranquil setting, easy access to the river for a scenic walk. Well kept lodge with amazing gardens and BBQ for those staying at the lodge. Super friendly staff!
Review 8:nothing
Review 9:Great location. Very clean and maintained. Friendly staff. Great place. It exceeded our expectations. Would stay there for a week if we had the time.
Review 10:Minor gripe - had to pay for wifi although there was small free allocation on arrival.
Review 11:Beautiful location with lovely gardens and access to the river. Very spacious and comfortable lodge
Review 12:I had made an error when booking this online and when we arrived we were told our rooms were actually booked for the next evening! However, the person on reception could not have been more helpful and although we had to pay more than we originally had planned, we were put into superior accommodation (the Executive Rooms) which was fabulous! The setting, beside the river, is perfect for a relaxing walk. Bought takeaway food in the town and ate in comfort in our rooms!
Review 13:Meagre data allowance and hot water supply. Both run out very quickly.
Review 14:Quiet, good facilities, well maintained. Really enjoyed the surrounding gardens. Great cafe attached.
Review 15:The only thing we didn't like was that we weren't there long enough. It was a one night stop for us, but we could easily have spent a few days.
Review 16:This lodge was in a beautiful setting with the river right behind it. Honestly, this ranked up there as one of our favorites on our trip. The gardens were beautiful, and the location was fabulous. There was a laundry and a fish room right next to our place. We had a little front porch, living room, and 2 bedrooms. It was like being at home. The lodge had the feel of living in a little village.
Review 17:Beautiful location with gardens and direct access to the river; spacious comfortable and well-equipped unit; close to main routes and town facilities.
Review 18:The only bad experience was having to pay $2 per small jar (about 20 ml) of Bonne Maman preserves from the cafe. I didn't want to invest in a larger container, the majority of which would be discarded, since I was there but 3 days. Granted, its was not a commodity they were prepared to sell. Had I eaten there, it would have been included as part of the meal.
Review 19:The comfortable bungalows scattered in a park-like setting on the property provided a sense of seclusion/privacy while still being accessible. It was spring and the rhododendrons and other plants were in full bloom. The property is adjacent to the Tongariro river and trail providing convenient access to the trail.
Review 20:The location and ambience together with the clean, comfortable, and well maintained units - the trees, gardens, and proximity to the Tongariro river make the lodge quite unique in my experience
Review 21:I didn't like that I could not stay longer.
Review 22:The location of the Creel Lodge on the banks of the Tongariro river can't be beaten. The relaxing spacious park like setting of the lodge is like nothing else I have experienced in New Zealand. Magnificent!
Review 23:A great place to share with two couples, although we would have enjoyed 2 double beds. The location by the river is excellent! The kitchen was well supplied. We were very comfortable and happy at Creel Lodge!
Review 24:This is the 4th stay for me and there is simply no better place to stay in Turangi for the wondering Fly Fisherman. Clean, Friendly and world class facilities. Oh and out front you can't go past the Creek Tackle house for advise and gear and don't forget the tying room for the best larder and coffee!!!
Review 25:Internet access was dreadful and $5 for internet that lasted for less than a day was silly. We all run businesses, and it was frustrating not to be able to be in contact. The TV was faulty and couldn't be heard on 100% volume. Bed was soft and old - all needs a freshen up!
Review 26:Proximity to river, good layout of unit,
Review 27:The only thing I did not like was that we had to leave. Wish I could have stayed longer than two nights.
Review 28:Loved everything there. Very quiet, and a very inviting place to go to. Woke up to the sound of birds in the morning, adn lovely places nearby to go for walks. Abosolutely fabulous, and did not want to leave. Total heaven
Review 29:Lovely, friendly, helpful people. Just the break we needed with every necessity. Best shower pressure EVER which was great for our tired backs, comfortable and warm.
Review 30:Nothing
Review 31:Owners were very friendly an helpful, lodge was very clean and comfortable. It exceeded our expectations. We'll be going back there again for sure
Review 32:Extremely rude, intimidating and a bully behaviour of the female manager spoiled our trip. We couldn't bear the hostility anymore, vacated the property a day early. The male manager was friendly but he was helpless when his wife was the bully. The bedrooms have no heating and depend on the heat pump at the living. The heat pump setting was changed by the staff to fan mode without our knowledge when we were out. We were freezing all night with a 5 year old and an infant not realising that the settings were changed. It was shocking as we had requested to the manager to keep the heat pump on and also a note at the door asking not to change the heat pump settings before we left for ski field.
Review 33:Beautiful and well maintained surrounding. Abundant trees giving a forest feel.
Review 34:Always love staying at Creel Lodge. The location is fabulous - so great to park the car and be able to walk everywhere - Unit always welcoming and warm on arrival. Our wee peaceful retreat. Look forward to returning xx
Review 35:The bed was too soft. It felt more like wobbling around on a water bed!
Review 36:The gardens surrounding the lodges were lovely and peaceful. The bathroom was spacious with a great shower. Easy 45 minute drive to the snow.
Review 37:Motel is very tastefully decorated. A home away from home in a beautiful spot close to the river for fishing. This place is on our favourites list to return to often for a relaxed fishing trip.
Review 38:Manager needs to go on a customer service course. She has no idea how to speak to a guest and treats everyone like a 10 year old. I paid for 2 and it's not your concern where we are going to sleep.....
Review 39:Location and facility
Review 40:We were thrilled with everything !! This is our 5th stay and will continue to go back. The hosts are wonderful, the fishing fantastic and the location impossible to beat. Everything is first class, clean and top notch. No where we have stayed can match the Creel Lodge !!
Review 41:Made a mistake and booked during school holidays a couple of years back , Did not like the noise kids..
Review 42:Allways happy to see Jil and her husband. Verry nice people and verry helpfull. Location is perfect for fisherman.. Excelent value for money.
Review 43:There is nothing not to like about the Creel Lodge
Review 44:Friendly staff and a facility set in a magic location. Tuis singing all day in the surrounding trees.
Review 45:Lovely welcoming couple on arrival. Heating had been turned on and room was lovely and warm when we arrived. Lovely to wake up to birdsong in the morning and beautiful grounds.
Review 46:I had booked this lodge same time last year - no issues - this year upon arrival the boys were told they had to park their loaded motorbike trailer out on the road by the woman - there was no compromise with her - quite rude - felt we paid good money for the room - wont be booking this accom again.
Review 47:Quiet location
Review 48:We loved the tranquil and beautiful setting and the unit was very warm and comfortable despite the cold weather. A very friendly welcome from the owner.
Review 49:Great location near national park and river walks. Very friendly and helpful folks at front desk. Well stocked kitchen and great outdoor barbecue area.
Review 50:I booked an Excutive room for two & took my grand daughteer & was told they don't like children in this room as they distroy the furniture & the pull out bed could not be used. & asked if she quiet , she didnt want to refund my money when I asked her!
Review 51:Quiet, lovely place ,beautiful grounds
Review 52:It's a bit off to charge $150 a night - a discounted cbd hotel rate - and then threaten a $15 fee if you dont leave the kitchen as it was found. I would like to think at that room rate that leaving breakfast dishes in the sink would be covered.
Review 53:Quiet comfortable well appointed Sky Sport on a double header rugby night
Review 54:Warm welcome when we arrived late at night to find clear directions to our unit, the heating on and the lights on and milk in the fridge to make our final cuppa. The units are comfortable, simple and in beautiful setting with loads of birds - lovely to waken up to hear the bird. and a coupon for free wifi so we could connect to check the weather. Our drive had been a bit nasty with really bad weather - it was great to find such a lovely refuge. Have stayed before and will stay here again.
Review 55:It took ten minutes to have to read through the guide to work the heater, not fun when you arrive in the evening. Early check in's 'must be by 8pm' makes it hard to find the time to get away. means time off work. Not dog friendly is also an issue.
Review 56:Love the location.
Review 57:Everything about the location was excellent. The well maintained and well designed garden backing on to the Tongariro River was a pleasant surprise. The cabin was very comfortable and met all our needs.
Review 58:We had no complaints about our stay.
Review 59:A lovely quiet place to stay. Clean and comfortable and a central spot for lots of attractions within 30 -45 minutes away.
Review 60:The beautiful setting, quality landscaping and outdoor facilities, covered barbecue and seating areas in park like setting. Individual car park next to cottage facilitating easy luggage movement. Quiet, peaceful stay in well appointed cottage. Informative hostess who suggested Tongariro River walk which we thoroughly enjoyed.
Review 61:The town of Turangi had nothing to offer in regards to good dining. Our best meal we cooked ourselves at the lodge.
Review 62:Steps away from Tongariro River path, which was beautiful.
Review 63:An immaculately presented and quiet property with direct access to the river. Our cabin accommodation was just lovely with, above all, the most comfortable bed.
Review 64:Stunning setting, wonderful helpful hosts just fantastic place to chill after a hard days work. Definitly coming back to put my feet relax and enjoy the peace and quiet again soon.
Review 65:The units are really well designed and furnished - absolute luxury! The native plants in the gardens are super and so is the birdsong. Easy walks along the river nearby and also Tokaanu hot springs.
Review 66:None
Review 67:The setting as we loved the peace and the gardens. The cafe is a must, the staff are very friendly, lodges well equipped and bbq if you want. Lots of birds and Tui singing lovely. If you are touring perfect. Fish in is its main attraction but within 30 to 45 mins of Geysers, volcano etc just the place to come back to and chill.
Review 68:Creel Lodge is located at the edge of town alongside the river. If you would like a quiet place, fly fishing in the river in a beautiful area then this is the place for you.
Review 69:Terrible instant coffee provided - tried it once and could not drink it - bitter. No drying room for eaders and boots.
Review 70:Lovely grounds and spaceous suite. Great BBQ in garden so able to grill outside.
Review 71:This quiet location close to both the river walkway and the town is absolutely perfect. As a destination, Turangi offers a wide range of activities for all ages.
Review 72:Got bitten by a mosquito - that is the only bad memory I have about the place
Review 73:Felt very welcomed by a friendly staff. Gardens are simply amazing. Room was simple, but functional and spotless. Very close to Tongariro crossing. They can even help you to organise shuttle there if you have not done that in advance. Will go back there for sure.
Review 74:Stingy with wifi. Only one 500mb code despite having a two bedroom and staying multiple days. Shower pressure was a bit weak.
Review 75:Spacous house with fully equipped kitchen.
Review 76:You are paying $$$, so you are expecting good customer service, not sure if it was a bad day (though they were sold out), but the the tone was rude, the ability to help was bad. sad to say this, but was not expecting such a service.
Review 77:Location was great, accommodation of comfy and neat
Review 78:Great place for a one night stay. Very relaxing if you just want to have a couple of days somewhere but little to do in surrounding area unless of course you are a fishing enthusiast.
Review 79:Excellent lodge which was beautifully appointed and very well equipped for self-catering. Stunning gardens. Friendly and efficient staff.
Review 80:Bathroom could do with an upgrade but is quite tolerable for the price. Clothing from a previous occupier found under the bed.
Review 81:Beautiful setting amidst lush gardens. Good facilities including verandah with table and chairs. Very good value.
Review 82:What a nice place!! The cottages have everything you need. The veranda overlooking the garden is so nice . The garden is so well kept and green!!!! Nice welcoming people and also the cafe at the entrance Yum!
Review 83:Credit card is debited prior to arrival.
Review 84:We stayed in number 19, a 3 roomed "log cabin". It was immaculate, very comfortable and very well equipped. Stainless steel kitchen, lounge/dining, large bedroom and lovely bathroom. We would recommend Creel Lodge to the most discerning holiday makers.
Review 85:The environment was superb, and being able to sit on the porch and to BBQ meals was perfect. The setting ensured that no noise interrupted the serenity of our stay, and being able to walk along the river path was most welcome. One of the best motels we have stayed at.
Review 86:That we only stayed for three nights - next time will have to be longer!
Review 87:Such a beautiful place to stay, great way to explore Taupo & Rotorua on the north as well as Tongariro and even the Whanganui river to the south
Review 88:The a/c had trouble coping with the heat.
Review 89:The location is away from the centre but close to the river. It is very quiet and has excellent BBQ facilities and outside eating
Review 90:person who checked us in wasn't particularly helpful as all others have been in New Zealand.
Review 91:Well equipped kitchen. Nice location; very comfortable.
Review 92:this is tough. Gosh the weather was too hot for anyone from further south. Wait. that's not creel lodge's problem.
Review 93:Love how private the cottages are, and the BBQ facility. So easy to use. Easy access to the Tongariro River. It is away from all the hustle and bustle. Would definitely come back!
Review 94:Nothing!
Review 95:Everything! This isn't a "motel" or "lodges", this is someone's loving, considered, superb creation. The photos we saw are all true but can't do justice to the reality. The welcome, the site layout, the attention to detail and the cleanliness - all perfect.
Review 96:No WiFi password given; arrived just before reception closed and realised too late to ask...
Review 97:Location; tranquil surroundings; trees; birds; comfortable, clean cabin; idyllic...
Review 98:Info asked you not to cook fish or meat! BBQ available but not usable in rainy weather. Rather off hand attitude of management. Wifi only usable from patio.
Review 99:Spacious cabin with comfortable lounge . Drying room for wet clothing /boots. Well equipped kitchen. Reasonably priced. Also reasonable wifi allowance. Easy walking distance to town.
Review 100:Being told I should have let them know we had 2 cars! Where does it ask that on the website?? You put it in the comments box I was told (now why did I not think of that!)
Review 101:Garden Environment, lounge furniture comfy, good kitchen and dining facilities, close to lovely river walk. Barbecue facilities right beside our unit. Quiet spot.
Review 102:The size of the 2 bedroom unit looks smaller than the floor area provided.
Review 103:Excellent facilities including private access to the Tongariro river. Creel cafe just next to lodge and offering good breakfast and simple lunch.
Review 104:No conplains.
Review 105:I arrived in lake taupo for a international cycling event which was awsome.my mother came with as I live in Australia.the stay at taupo was very quiet and relaxing would remend to every body to stay there.thank you
Review 106:Staff was welcoming and helpful with advice about activities and restaurants in the area. The cottage was spotless and plenty big enough for our two couples who were sharing it. In addition to a large kitchen, there were grills outside along with a laundry room and fish cleaning room. The entire lodge is well maintained and beautifully landscaped. It is steps away from a river trail, a short walk to Turangi center, and convenient to Tongariro and fishing streams.
Review 107:Interior a little aged. Room was very smelly (open windows seemed not to help very much). Bedroom was very tiny. WLAN is only free for a very limited amount (400MB for 3 nights, which is not much if you want to upload some photos) - every additional 100MB costs 3 NZD which is overly expansive.
Review 108:Nice surrounding (garden with BBQ-grill, Tongariro river behind the lodges). Very good location for trips to tongariro national park. Staff was helpful booking a shuttle bus to tongariro crossing. Good equipped kitchen.
Review 109:Our lodge was well-maintained daily. It was clean and comfortable. And the lodge has easy access to the beautiful Tongariro River. That was awesome! We enjoyed the walks to the river.
Review 110:A beautiful facility with management that could not be nicer or more helpful. Our accommodations were clean and comfortable. We could not have asked for more.
Review 111:Be warned that late check-ins are not accepted. Apart from that (and it was no problem for us), I cannot think of a thing we did not like. The place is wonderful.
Review 112:This was one of our favorite places on a month-long visit to NZ. It's located off a side street just a block from the main highway but feels very secluded. It's surrounded by trees and its landscaping is spectacular, and it's less than a hundred meters walk from the Tongariro River with lovely walking paths on both sides.
Review 113:The check-in time of 8pm is ambitious if you are travelling from Wellington after work
Review 114:Lovely mature trees around the units, and the Tongariro river track is just through the garden gate.
Review 115:We enjoyed our stay at Creel Lodge very much and I can only recommend this accommodation. The rooms are big with a well aquipped kitchen. Turangi is close to Tongariro NP.
Review 116:A few more utensils in the kitchen would be useful and free wifi would definitely be a benefit
Review 117:Size and layout of the lodge, which was overall very clean excpet for an infestation of ants, which the manager sorted out straightaway. Position of lodge was very quiet and we'd definitely go back.
Review 118:Very peaceful and tranquil. We lengthened our stay because we enjoyed staying there so much. We will keep returning [this was my 4th visit] - I am told people keep coming back year after year to stay and I am not surprised.
Review 119:Location and setting was out of this world. Great hosts, beautiful gardens, lovely café on premises. Without question our best experience of many visits to the region.
