Reviews for Hotel Montecodeno

Review 1:Some noise from the road with early morning delivery vans.

Review 2:Great location, a short walk down a cobbled alley to the lake side and ferries. Varenna is a lovely quiet town with plenty of restaurants. Railway station is a short distance (5 minute walk). Hotel has a restaurant serving local dishes including lake fish.

Review 3:There was no water pressure. The shower head and sink just dribbled water out at best. Also, there were ants crawling around in both the bathroom and the room. Additionally, since our room was directly above the main route thru town, there was a lot of road noise, particularly from motorcycles.

Review 4:It was easy to find since it was right on the main road through town. The food in the restaurant downstairs was very good and a good value for the money.

Review 5:Our room was pretty small and very basic.

Review 6:Location is close to the lake and ferry dock. The hotel stuff is very friendly and helpful. Good breakfast with variety of options. Free car parking was provided on the street right across the hotel.

Review 7:No lobby or semi-public place to loaf, socialize, or read on rainy days.

Review 8:Accessible location to town, hiking trails, and train system. Friendly staff created family like atmosphere. No hassles about anything.

Review 9:The showers are pretty small but as we traveled through 3 countries we realized that was a very common size.

Review 10:The location of the hotel is wonderful. Just a short walk to the waterfront. Made it very easy to catch the ferries and travel to near by villages. On a quiet street yet close to everything. Breakfast every morning was fresh with plenty of food. Service is polite and friendly. Loved our stay.

Review 11:Very noisy ( street noise and other room noise also hotel in need of repair )

Review 12:Location to train station and ferry. Lydia runs show and does an excellent job she was great.

Review 13:Stale smell in bathroom which I think was caused by the mouldy shower curtain.

Review 14:Good location close to train station and ferries on Lake Como. Helpful staff. Good size room. Continental breakfast included.

Review 15:Room very small, no room for suitcases. Bathroom was exceptionally small. I at 175 lbs and had a job to sit on toilet. Shower was small and not adjustable, water came down on my head so had to wash hair when in shower. Also mould in shower. Handle broken.

Review 16:Restaurant seems okay and floors of room were clean

Review 17:Great authentic Italian atmosphere. Good location. The owners of the hotel, mother and son score 10 out of 10 for there helpfulness and friendliness.

Review 18:Free parking was not readily available despite being advertised. Staff not helpful in resolving this issue. We had to park in pay parking until luckily a free space became available.

Review 19:The air conditioning did not work very well, although it was not really needed.

Review 20:The owner of the hotel is very friendly. Her son works at the restaurant by the beach on Lake Como and you get a deal for beach access. The breakfast was delicious every morning.

Review 21:The noise from the road outside! There was a 'sleeping policeman' immediately outside the entrance, and the noise from heavy lorries and motorbikes started every day from about 6 a.m.

Review 22:The hotel was near the attractive old town with its cobbled streets and good choice of restaurants. It was also near lakeside villas and their beautiful shady gardens.

Review 23:Excellent value especially half-board. Very friendly staff but limited english. Clean, simple room. Fast, free internet. Handy for ferry terminal and train station.

Review 24:None

Review 25:7 min walk from the train station and a 3 min walk to the ferry. Loved the breakfast included. Varenna is a great place to stay at Lake Como. Good value for price.

Review 26:The bathroom was very tight. I had to step into the shower to use the toilet. Also, the shower is small and has a curtain which would cling to my body while I showered which is unpleasant and made me feel not clean. Lastly, Rick Steve's Italy book states that guests qualify for a 15% discount if guests spend 3 nights in the hotel, show his book, and pay in cash but this was not honored even though we fulfilled all the listed criteria. We were told there were other criteria that we did not fulfill but these conditions were not listed in Rick Steve's book. Not sure if this is an error on Rick Steve's part for not including the other criteria required or if the hotel did not want to fulfill what they advertise in his book.

Review 27:Location is good - near train station, ferry dock, and main area of Varenna.

Review 28:There is nothing not to like.

Review 29:If you are looking for a clean, comfortable hotel with good fresh cooked food and in a good position for the train or ferry ,this is the place to book into. Very friendly family run hotel.

Review 30:Breakfast could have been a bit more extensive.

Review 31:Staff was helpful and friendly, atmosphere was warm. Decent value for money. Fast WiFi. Enjoyed the stay.

Review 32:WiFi unstable. Marco promises to upgrade

Review 33:Manager Marco speaks English and most helpful in all areas. Upgrade to room with panoramic glimpse. Courtesy coffees before very filling breakfast. Expensive but still the best value for money place in entire 'closed shop'village.

Review 34:There was nothing I disliked but tourists who want a more upscale place and a large luxurious room should keep in mind that you get what you pay for.

Review 35:Price was extremely reasonable for the Lake Como area

Review 36:The owners and their son were very attentive to whatever we needed. There is no view but you can't ask for a better location for convenience. Loved it!

Review 37:Parking is tough...but that appears to be Varenna.

Review 38:Very friendly and helpful staff. Made us feel comfortable in every way. Dining was most excellent...great dishes, tasty home style and table service spot on. Made to feel welcome and would stay again!!

Review 39:The inconvenience of WiFi I am getting used to in Italy, except the big cities. Besides I didn't go here to set on a computer!

Review 40:The owner and staff were most kind and helpful and Varenna can't be beat.

Review 41:No tea and coffee facilities in room but the restaurant is only downstairs.

Review 42:The hotel was very clean and comfortable. The staff went out of their way to make you feel at home.Nothing was too much trouble. We had an 18month old baby with us and had difficulty finding a shop that sold milk. They provided this for us for the duration of our stay at no extra cost. When we left we felt we were leaving our family behind.. You will not be disappointed if you stay here.

Review 43:Wi-fi connection was a little complicated.

Review 44:We were greeted in a friendly manner. The staff was very nice and spoke some English. Our room was in the back, away from the road and was very quiet. The hotel was a short walk from the train station. Good value.

Review 45:A bit noisy during the day but double glazed windows cover this and the traffic ceases in early evening so sleep is not affected

Review 46:The hotel is clean, comfortable and has a family feel to it. It is not top of the range and doesn't pretend to be. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the restaurant offers good quality meals at a reasonable price. The rooms are spacious and functional. It is located close to the railway station and ferry

Review 47:very disappointed with the breakfast, fruit juice, croissants, breadrolls - no cereals nor fruit - on one morning when there were more than a handful of visitors, there were a few cakes.

Review 48:short walk from railway station and short walk to the lake. Close to the Information Centre and the local cafe/newsagent.

Review 49:Street was a bit noisy and not a good view...but only a two minute walk to a great view.

Review 50:Room was a good size and breakfast was quite good. Very good location but no views of lake. Staff was very friendly and acommodating.

Review 51:Very spartan interior. Not exceedingly luxurious, but if you understand that from the get-go, it's fine.

Review 52:Fantastic and helpful staff. Good location.

Review 53:All good

Review 54:Great location to explore Lake Como from. Close to railway station and ferry boat services. Nice clean rooms and friendly and helpful staff

Review 55:Shower facilities, outdated recepticals would not accept my adapters

Review 56:It's location and friendly staff

Review 57:Family run hotel with warm service and character.

Review 58:Excellent location in Varenna

Review 59:Shower and tolet were inadequate. Could not turn around in shower and tolet had mold on seat

Review 60:Location

Review 61:Very nice and helpful host, very good location, comfy bed, good breakfast, welcoming atmosphere. Would warmly recommend.

Review 62:Pillows and bed were a little rough.

Review 63:I liked the location and the staff were super friendly and helpful.

Review 64:Proximity to train station

Review 65:friendly owners good location pleasant trip.

Review 66:central location, quiet, basic but clean

Review 67:Accommodating and friendly staff, great food, walking distance to the ferry, cafes and restaurants.

Review 68:Great location, great staff, good food.

Review 69:Bike not available despite already mentioned in booking.

Review 70:Location is perfect. nice staff, warm welcome

Review 71:Overall hygiene and cleanness of bathrooms.

Review 72:Location Price Staff (spoke great english) Breakfast

Review 73:Friendly staff and great location

Review 74:Pillows were lumpy and hard, caused my husband neck pains for a few days.

Review 75:Close to train station and ferry dock, very nice staff

Review 76:This hotel was great. We only had a couple of small complaints. The shower was very small and the entrance in the back (needed to get to the rooms) is supposed to stay locked, which is great for security, but the lock sticks. It was difficult to open. Even with these small complaints we would still stay there again.

Review 77:The staff here was fantastic! It's a small family run business and you can tell they take pride in their work and customer service. The beds were pretty good for an Italian hotel. The windows opened for a wonderful breeze off the lake. The location was great. It was a close enough walk to/from the train station with our bags. It was also just straight up the hill from the harbor area. Nearby Gelateria riva is one of the most delicious gelaterias in Italy. Varenna is a great home base for a trip to lake como. It's a beautiful quiet little city.

Review 78:- Dirty washbasin in the bathroom and the actual room - neither was cleaned properly before my arrival or during my stay.- Paper-thin walls between the rooms. - Noise caused by a family that owns an apartment above the hotel. - Breakfast. There was a limited choice of food and whatever was provided was of a low-grade quality. - Internet practically didn't work in my room. They said that nearby mountains caused a problem. Interestingly, no mountains ever caused a problem in Turkey or Montenegro. During my 2 months of travel I stayed in a number of hotels and B&Bs. Some were better than others, of course. Hotel Montecodeno was the most expensive and the worst of them all.

Review 79:Doors were locked so that one needed the key to leave the room, and also the door to the outside was locked, so God forbid there was a fire or an emergency and the key wasn't readily available. This was very concerning. Also, one of the twin beds was shot. My niece kindly used the bed, but it was awful and she woke up sore. Basically it had a huge dip in the mattress so one could not sleep comfortably on it.

Review 80:The family went out of their way to extend a Happy Birthday to my niece, and presented her with a beautiful flowering plant at breakfast. Very sweet ladies at the front desk. The staff were very friendly and asked us to return again in the future.

Review 81:Stairs only to rooms.

Review 82:Owners Lydia and son, Marco, were delightful and hospitable. Lydia's homemade lasagna for dinner was like no other. Location is easy walk from train station, and as a budget traveler, I could have asked for little more. The WiFi was sketchy, but it has been everywhere else in Italy for me, too.

Review 83:no lift so, have to carry big and heavy luggage to the room.

Review 84:Hotel is good location and near the port, and not far from train station just 10 mins by walk.

Review 85:Tight squeeze between the shower pan and toilet.

Review 86:Great staff. Friendly, helpful, accommodating. Plane room that was just fine for a few nights sleep. Close to the train station. Close to the ferry terminal. Located on the route to the castle ruins at the top of the hill.

Review 87:Staff had poor English, so we were mostly on our own. The English was so bad, that they didn't even tell us that we had a free breakfast included in our rate.

Review 88:Nice location. Convenient to train station, water front shops and restaurants, lake boats

Review 89:Friendly and welcoming staff.Good breakfast included in price.View of the garden ,but the room was a little dark, as there was only one window. Was quiet in the evening, and we had good nights sleep. Short distance to the waterfront..We recommend this place. Pat /David Loker----Australia

Review 90:Sound-proof is not very good, you hear neighbours and hall's activities, bathroom is very small.

Review 91:Breakfast was fine, hotel is near ferries, wifi is offered to be connected (hopefully it is free of charge),

Review 92:The only but most important thing, there was no hot water for shower. We took a shower with cold water and it was embarrasing.

Review 93:The staffs were very kind, and the room was neat and quite clean. They served our breakfast although it was almost 11 and was after breakfast time. The location was perfect. The hotel not only was near the train station, but the ferry and also the 'castello' where we could see the beautiful view of lake and mountain.

Review 94:Although the toilet is much clean and well-equipped, the space of shower is a little bit narrow for a strong man like me. Another thing is not related to the hotel: when I wanted to take morning train to Malpensa for the 11 am flight, I found all the trains were cancled because of strike! I spend some time to call a taxi to reach Malpensa with a fee of 145 euros!

Review 95:Perfect position! 1 minute downward walk to the ferry, and 5 minutes relaxed walk to the railway station. One can reach everywhere of Varenna easily, including the Castelo de Vezia on top of mountain which can be arrived at by climbing through the mountain path besides the hotel. Perfect service from staffs, among whom a young guy speaks good English (he provided me the free wifi password because I have no valid phone in Italy). When I have to check out at 6 am, they provided me a package of breakfast to take away. The food of the hotel is delicious, including the fresh lake fish and tasty Tiramisu. The price is cheap, the facilities are quite good and the room is clean. In such a dream-like place of Varenna, this hotel is also a perfect residence for the travellers.

Review 96:The staff were extremely kind and helpful. We were able to leave our bags until 6pm on our day of departure and the breakfast was enormous and very good.

Review 97:Our plans were rushed due to the family having an "emergency".Had we not been able to get there by 18:30, they told us we would haveto find another place to stay. On the bookings site check in was until21:00. We came by train and that could have been a major issue. If youdon't have access to a phone or your email don't book here.Their plans could affect your plans.

Review 98:This is a small family run B&B located near the train station inVarenna on Lake Como. Excellent value with a good breakfast. Nothingfancy, but our room had a view of the water which I wasn'texpecting.

Review 99:The hotels rooms are located right by the main road, which means that you may get disturbed by the traffic at night. The rooms are a bit basic but not lacking in any essential comfort. The changing season meant that the heating was used sporadically and it took some time to take effect.

Review 100:Staff was excellent, especially the lovely wife of the chef. The breakfast was a bit basic but fair. They provided good directions and also maps and timings. I could leave my luggage there on the past day until the evening. Location is excellent, it's just a 5 minute walk from the train station and 2 minute walk from the ferry terminal. I would definitely stay here again.

Review 101:Our room was on the second floor above the restaurant facing street.Smell from the kitchen was in the room. We did not sleep first nightbecause of noise from the street. We asked to be moved to differentroom. You need to ask for a room facing backyard. I would not stay inthis hotel second time.

Review 102:Staff was friendly. Nice breakfast.

Review 103:You can hear other people going in and out of their rooms and some noise from the road in front.

Review 104:Staff were very friendly and spoke good English.neat tidy rooms with a tv .Close to the ferry, train and good waterfront restaurants.

Review 105:The room was not very good. Outlets did not work with standard EU converter. Wifi only works for one device. Toilet would only flush once in a 10-15 min. time period. Shower was small and uncomfortable. It is a nice town to visit but with great transport it is not necessary to stay overnight here.

Review 106:It is located in Varenna which is a very nice town on Lake Como. The town is very quaint and the hotel is walking distance to restaurants and Lover's lane.

Review 107:I didn't like the staff. A lady in bad humor received us with a kid yelling in her arms and treated us badly, very unprofessional. The food is the worst I have eaten in Italy. I really disliked this hotel!!! To the point I have no words to express it: total nightmare!!!!!

Review 108:Horrible staff, they treated us poorly and yelled at us for anything. Customer service non existant. Horrendous breakfast with super low quality food, not clean kitchen area. Room was just ok, at least they had a-c but very simple. I would give it half star... Will never go back there!!!!!

Review 109:The price was quite high considering we had paid half the amount staying in a large, very modern hotel in Bergamo a few days earlier.

Review 110:Great location, short walk from the train station and al the restaurants and bars on the lake front. Friendly and helpful staff too.

Review 111:It was definitely not value for money. The room was way too small (barely larger than 2 single beds). The photos show the room as bigger. Also, we got 2 single beds when we were expecting a double.

Review 112:It was conveniently located very close to the boat station and the train station.

Review 113:Getting up to the room could be a challenge for older folk, or those with walking difficulty. The room we had was small, with hardly any space for our luggage.

Review 114:Very conveniently located if you're travelling by train. The Varenna-Esino station isn't on any map I could find online, but it's a short 8-10 minute downhill walk to this hotel, and another 2 minutes to the Varenna jetty on the lake. Marina is a warm and excellent host. She helped with our heavy bags up to the room. You actually have to go out of the building, up some cobbled-stone steps, then in through the back, and up some more stairs. The room was tiny, with an even tinyer bathroom, but it was very clean and tidy. The bed was very comfortable. The shower was great. The wifi is free and worked well from the rooom. Although it was late May, the weather had turned cold and they switched on the central heating which I thought was very considerate. There is also a safe in the room where we could keep our passports and valuables. Breakfast was nothing fancy, but adequate. They have a restaurant with a set menu for dinner, which we enjoyed and value for money. A tip for train travellers. The Varenna-Esino station does not sell tickets. Either buy your return or onward ticket from the station you're coming from, or there is a Tourist Information office at the bottom of the hill, about 30 metres from Hotel Montecodeno, and you can purchase your train tickets there. They charge a small fee for the service.

Review 115:Montecodeno is fine if you're looking for a budget hotel and don't mind a rather down-market feel and quite dark rooms. However, at €105 a night, it is too expensive. Lake Como is a very, very expensive area so I suppose one has to allow for this, but I was very disappointed.

Review 116:Nice town, good location, easy to find, breakfast fine.

Review 117:Room was cramped. Air-conditioning not turned on unless temperature outside is above 23C, so had to open the window onto a noisy street. Had to ask for the electricity in my room to be turned on.

Review 118:Staff were nice. Breakfast was ok.

Review 119:Rooms are located up a cobblestone ramp--could be a problem for travelers needing an elevator.

Review 120:One of the less expensive hotel options in Varenna. Good location as it was near the ferry terminal but still easy to get to other parts of the town. An older building not updated but a clean and comfortable room.

Review 121:service ok but not very friendly, room ok but the rest of the building like corridor, restaurant just ugly. too expensive at all for this, 130 euros for a doubleroom. mountainview means window to the busy single street which goes trough veranna! we did not see a garden so no gardenview rooms, in our opinion.

Review 122:well situated, 3 min from the port, breakfast buffet ok, room not nice but everything you need but way to expensive for this, motorbike garage

Review 123:Location in one of the most beautiful waterfront villages on Lake Como and right at the foot of some magnificent driving / riding roads in the hills behind.

Review 124:This is a family-run hotel and I was made to feel very welcome. The hotel was clean and warm, and is a quick walk both to the railway station and the lakeside.

Review 125:The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 126:Ticked me off that you had to pay for wifi. We went to free wifi places instead.

Review 127:Location within easy walking Eustace of sites we wanted to visit.

Review 128:The pillows were a bit too firm

Review 129:The service - friendliness and helpfulness of the staff
