Reviews for Sportsmans Lodge Turangi
Review 1:The community kitchen is great. Everything needed to cook a good meal is right there for you, just bring your food. Great location for hunting, fishing, and hiking. Doug and Betty know the area well and were great with suggestions on what to do.
Review 2:Big country style cottage studio was well priced, extremely cleaned and well equipped. We liked the attention to details, self published books about the lodge and surrounding activities to do, insert spray and heat pump were handy to keep bugs away during the night. A big screen tv and nice bedding made it a comfortable stay.
Review 3:The room and shower room were just a bit too small for comfort, we did not have anywhere to manage our luggage or unpack. The room was also very hot at night as it was impossible to open windows because of the mosquitoes.
Review 4:Nice garden and veranda in the sunshine. Good kitchen facilities and friendly management
Review 5:There is no sound proofing between rooms. A lamp for bedtime reading would be good. WiFi very unreliable.
Review 6:Relaxed, friendly reception from person at office on arrival. She offered information about the local area and places to eat. Modern and clean little bathroom.
Review 7:We had an amazing stay there. Everything was very neat and spik span clean. Betty, the host, was very helpful and gave us good advice on what to see and do in Turangi and NZ in general as she knows a lot and is an experienced traveller herself. Very, very recommendable.
Review 8:lovely property and hosts were very helpful. everything was pleasing to the eye and well kept. hot showers, comfortable beds and a very tidy share kitchen. there is also a separate lounge to relax in after your days adventures!
Review 9:Stayed previously - as before, owners are lovely, very welcoming and obliging. Rooms were immaculately clean, as were the shared kitchen and lounge facilities. I again travelled with my elderly cat, who was also very welcome, and as she isn't a wanderer I let her out, with no objections at all. She was also very happy and comfortable :)
Review 10:a plug next to the bed would have been great, practical but very small bathroom
Review 11:Very nice and helpful host, nice lodge, clean and comfortable, nice place just next to plenty of walks and activities
Review 12:Room was on the small side but fit our purposes perfectly. You have to be able to handle stairs
Review 13:Doug is so friendly and loves to make sure you enjoy your stay. If you want to stay busy he will give you all the information to do so. Common area was great for mingling with other guests
Review 14:Bedroom a little on the small side but for what we paid, it did the job, a mere sleepover enroute from auckland to wellington
Review 15:friendly staff. Very clean premises both inside and outside, including shared kitchen and lounge. Modern, clean and inviting.
Review 16:Too expensive, the room was very cold and the heater too small to heat it
Review 17:Very clean room and facilities, refurbished bathroom, relatively spacious room, friendly staff, convenient location for the Tongariro National Park
Review 18:Very very nice hosts and beautiful motel. Everything was clean and tidy (especially the kitchen) and in the communication area you can find a billiard-table!
Review 19:The bathroom was a challenge and little tight to move around in. Just a small point but manageable.
Review 20:A great place to stay for a solo fisherman. Tongariro on your doorstep. Dougie the owner was great craic. Good shared kitchen facilities and lounge. Well worth spending an easy couple of days before travelling on.
Review 21:nothing at all.
Review 22:Amazing, cosy and very clean place, Lovely staff who helped us a lot with very helpful info about what to do in the area. Worth mentioning the great location of the sportman's lodge, close to restaurants, supermarket, river and tangorino.
Review 23:The room was on the small side and the bathroom was tiny.
Review 24:Doug and Betty were very friendly and helpful. The garden is lovely and backs onto a rivwer walk. The kitchen and lounge facilities are good.
Review 25:Everything was lovely. Wish I could have booked for more days!
Review 26:Beautiful place in an incredibly relaxing location. Despite the light rain when we were there on our first day we managed to have a short stroll along the river which was absolutely gorgeous. The room is not too big but there is a huge shared kitchen with plenty of amenities, and quite a big lobby which I loved.
Review 27:not a bad experience but being close to the main road there was some traffic noise.
Review 28:basic but clean and well looked after facilities, friendly staff ( we were a bit late signing in but a staff member stayed behind and took her time to explain every thing plainly and fully.
Review 29:The accommodation was a lovely spacious cottage in beautiful surroundings. It had a large well equipped kitchen, comfortable couches and a large bed, we only wished we were staying longer.
Review 30:great fun and funky rustic lodge, with a pool table in the social room ,roaring fires to keep warm by, big tv to watch and fab breakfast room/self carting place - awesome setting
Review 31:Very nice owners. They gave us great advice and helped us out a lot. Loved the common area with fireplace. Very cozy and easy to hang out in. Perfect location.
Review 32:Very friendly host. Excellent location. It is near a river where we can do an hour river walk and see the blue ducks!! The common kitchen is well equipped where we can prepare our dinner. Room is small but very comfortable and clean. Thanks!!
Review 33:Quietly off the main road and by a river and bush walkway. Absolutely my thing. Wished I had booked for more nights there. Recommend highly. Comfort and user friendly supreme.
Review 34:I was in process of a move up North, and needed a stop as I knew I'd be leaving Wellington late. Staff completely lovely - I had to ring to say I'd be very late arriving, and the heater was on and light left for me on arrival close to midnight! Room simple but immaculately clean, with modern facilities. Shared kitchen and lounge area also immaculate. While room check out was 10am as for most places, I was entirely welcome to have my breakfast after this in the kitchen, and repack my car - I can't have left before 11.30 Highly recommended :-)
Review 35:It was pretty cold in the bedroom (but got warmer fast when the heating was on) and in the common areas (kitchen and lounge)
Review 36:The kitchen is really well equipped (3 ovens and hobs, 2 kettles, enough cutlery for every guest and more); th lounge is cosy (although you might want to ask the hosts for a fire in the fireplace or to turn the heating up)
Review 37:The double room is bit small.
Review 38:This was the third time staying with Sportsmans lodge. We love the cottage room and the location is so convenient for going skiing the next day. Highly recommended if you go skiing.
Review 39:More a nice to have, for winter trip would be nice to have room and common areas (Kitchen and Lounge) pre-heated
Review 40:In-room shower and toilet (did not expect this for lodge) Having your own kitchen cupboard was a nice touch
Review 41:Nothing at all.
Review 42:Extremely friendly welcome, cleanliness of all parts of the bedroom and bathroom was fantastic and the same for the shared kitchen which was equipped very well.
Review 43:Doug and Betty are fantastic hosts, providing spotless facilities and helpful local knowledge. The twin room we had was small but comfortable, it had a small ensuite with a great shower. There is free wifi, parking, guest kitchen and lounge with fireplace all a short walk to Turangi town centre.
Review 44:I did not have a bad experience though a TV in the room would have been good so I could enjoy a bit of downtime rather than in the communal lounge.
Review 45:This has to be the cleanest place I have ever stayed. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom functional. The communal kitchen was fully stocked and was immaculate. The guest lounge had a pool table and provides a welcoming place to socialise.
Review 46:A bit chilly in the rooms, could have done with more bedding.
Review 47:Staff are so helpful Lovely garden out the back River just behind property, great for running alongside Fully kitted out kitchen with all equipment needed Lovely pool table in lounge room with TV
Review 48:Staff very nice and helpful. Right after we checked in we saw there was a big wasp in the room, and the owner killed it straight away and gave us another room when we told him we were allergic to its bite.
Review 49:room was a bit small, but it's really all you need actually
Review 50:I am a bit of a clean freak, and this was one of the cleanest little places I have ever stayed at.
Review 51:Rooms noisy, you can hear everything from next door. No tea and coffee facilities in room. Ok for one night stay but rooms very small for a longer stay
Review 52:Location, great staff, good facilities a good kitchen and games room
Review 53:room and bathroom small could do with bed lights and more GPOsl
Review 54:liked the position , very well set up communal kitchen , loved the lounge with TV and fireplace , nice and warm, beds comfy good car parking
Review 55:Staff and kitchen facilities were excellent. We could interact with other fellow travellers while cooking together in the kitchen which helped in sharing experiences and making plans during our trip.
Review 56:Bathroom a little tight for space, but very clean with a terrific shower.
Review 57:Rooms clean and comfortable. Well equipped kitchen facilities, with complementary tea and coffee. Friendly, helpful management.
Review 58:High level of noise from State highvay. Cold (13°C) in the morning inside, not conected heater(wall socket vithout voltage)
Review 59:Very close to Tongariro river, beautifull garden.
Review 60:The River track was not accessible due to undergrowth.Taupo Council responsibility but tourists missing out
Review 61:Great shared kitchen all facilities and cooking requirements just well laid out and functional
Review 62:The walls were a little thin and the room was small but it is a place for sportsmen and very affordable.
Review 63:This place was immaculate, freshly painted and well cared for. Staff was wonderful; smiling, attentive and informative. They made arrangements for a shuttle to and from Tongariro as well as restaurant suggestions that were within walking distance.
Review 64:Great place for our onenight stop over, easy to find, cheerful welcome, helpful local information given, small but comfortable room providing all we needed, clean kitchen with good facilities - and the price was VERY competitive.
Review 65:I didn't like that our room was on the second level as the balcony can be a little squeeky when people walk pass the room.
Review 66:Location was handy to shops but was still quiet forrelaxation. Also there is a large entertainment room with fireplace, large screen tv. A pool table and alot of comfortable seating. It was still cozy enough if your with a small group. Would definetly stay there again.
Review 67:We were greeted by a friendly black dog, who was preceded by his charming owner. She went out of her way to ensure we knew where all the local facilities were, and how the lodge facilities were set out
Review 68:the rooms of the main building were very small with virtually no facilities. They made up for this by having a spacious communal kitchen, but having the cottage was meant we did not need it
Review 69:we travelled as 2 mature couples , our'cottage' was great but the other couple were not impressed with their room. The owner was friendly and helpful ,we were close to shops and a very friendly pup
Review 70:Very friendly staff, big communal kitchen, nice place to stay. The Apline HotBus picked us up right in front of the hotel for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Everything was great.
Review 71:Room upstairs dogs downstairs a bit hard for older couple and room very small
Review 72:Pet friendly lots of room for dog to run and play but necessary for us to be with them while loose.
Review 73:ensuite a bit small - but not really a problem.
Review 74:The triple, room, community kitchen, community lounge, parking, general landscaping, privacy and quietness.
Review 75:Cannot say anything negative at all.
Review 76:We had the cottage 3persons and very comfortable. Just sorry we oy had one night. Turangi itself was very good to stay at. A visit to the hot pools and a private bath was a highlight.
Review 77:The proprietors were lovely, lovely people. You can tell they put a ton of time, money and energy into making the lodge a fantastic place to stay. I highly recommend.
Review 78:bathroom was a little small
Review 79:Very friendly owners who instantly made us feel welcome. Gave useful tips to help us during our stay. allowed us to leave our bags untill after we finished the tongariro crossing late the next afternoon which was extremely kind
Review 80:Noisy guests who left early!
Review 81:Proximity to river for walking. Clean bedroom, en-suite, communal room and kitchen. Fresh milk provided rather than UHT (ultra horrid taste)
Review 82:The staff were so friendly with organising a shuttle for the mountain pick up and giving directions. Great location, close to the mountains, river and taupo. Would stay again!
Review 83:Very good value and the stay was all ok, but potential guests should be aware that rooms (maybe some? like ours) are tiny and there is hardly space for luggage. Bathroom is very small too. In contrast to typical NZ motels, this one has a communal kitchen, not inside a unit. It was ok for us but people wishing more privacy may not like it. It is just a place you should come prepared for a little unusual. Nevertheless, welcome was friendly and we overall liked it. Good food in the restaurant across the road.
Review 84:A bit noisy in the morning as room close to kitchen. But was ok, respectful guests.
Review 85:The cleanliness of the room, cooking facilities, the parking, the lovely garden, the hosts very friendly and ready to help. Nice lodge!
Review 86:Whole construction is made of wood so it gets very noisy when people walk by outside Especially before 11pm and after 6am.
Review 87:nature, friendly staff, clean room.
Review 88:The rooms & bathroom are compact to say the least but very clean & comfy. If you want to sleep before 11pm and past 6.30am I would suggest a room well away from the kitchen though as it gets noisy, esp kids racing around & raised voices.
Review 89:The owners are just the nicest people, super helpful and chatty. The room was the most spotless we've seen in donkeys years, there is good access to the river, fast WiFi, it's close enough to main road for travel but minimal road noise & the facilities were very good. The whole lodge was pristine throughout. A great short stay.
Review 90:Localization: direct acess to the Tongariro River Trail. The kitchen very well organized with everything you might need All the common spaces very well cleaned And the avaliability of the owners, specially Betty. Thank you
Review 91:- VERY good value for money! - Staff was very friendly, we were allowed to store our things at the lodge even for the day of our departure - Rooms are very clean - but also quite small. But that was expected - We definitely recommend the Sportsman's lodge at Turangi for a comfortable and nice stay
Review 92:Nothing!
Review 93:Friendly and family orientated. Fine accommodation at a very good rate. All you need for an econmic place to stay, either for a stopover or longer. Would recommend it and certainly we will stay there again :-)
Review 94:Betty and Doug were very friendly and helpful. Pretty garden setting, great facilities, clean and modern rooms. Will definitely go back if in Turangi again!
Review 95:Rooms are very nice but basic. The river is close but not accessible/visible due to heavy vegetation,
Review 96:Newly renovated rooms and new feel to interior. Great common area/kitchen. Super friendly couple running the place with good information briefing
Review 97:The room and bathroom were rather small. The proximity of water means there are a lot of mosquitos and other insects, so you can't leave the windows open at night (they have no mosquito nets) which is a real pain if the weather is hot.
Review 98:Excellent location as a base to explore the North Island. The hosts are fantastic people who will help in any possible way. The lounge and kitchen are spacious and comfortable.
Review 99:Although the room was small, it didn't matter as we weren't in it long! Communal kitchen was great as was the lounge. Access to laundry was all a brilliant add on. Doug was great - liked a chat!
Review 100:Can't think of anything!
Review 101:Great place with friendly staff. Caters for everyone depending on the reason for their stay in TurAngi..And that can't be easy. We certainly highly recommend this as a place to stay whatever you reason in being in this absolutely stunning part of NZ.
Review 102:Nothing
Review 103:Very friendly and warm owners, a fantastic welcome and lots of helpful advice including a lift back to the bus stop on the day we were leaving. Great location in Turangi, nice secluded and peaceful location. Very well equipped communal kitchen with multiple appliances to more than provide for the small number of rooms. Clean and quiet rooms, great shower. Love the photos around the shared living room which added to our anticipation for the Tongariro Crossing.
Review 104:-none-
Review 105:The room is a bit small but quite new, nice and clean. It's just few km away from the tongariro alpine crossing starting point or for Tongariro national park in general.
Review 106:Well thought out facilities. Free milk, coffee etc. well equipped communal kitchen, massive communal lounge. Room was small but everything that was required. Betty was lovely. Thanks.
Review 107:Very small rooms, but for the price was not expecting more. A fat person would find the very narrow bathroom difficult to manage.
Review 108:We stayed a night there just to break a trip. Comfy bed, awesome shower, friendly hosts, very conveniently located just off SH1. Right next door to what my brother says is the best trout river in the world. Hosts happy to put mattress and bedding on floor for unexpected extra person.
Review 109:I am not complaining because I knew what I was getting, but room 9 is small, maybe 12x12 ft, bathroom inclusive, so keep that in mind if you need more space. Also, we were right by the staircase and could hear other guests tromping up and down.
Review 110:Cute little place right off the main road. Extremely clean, very good value. Beds were comfortable and room was warm enough. Owners were friendly and helpful with information about hikes, activities and restaurants in the area. There was also a common kitchen and TV room which we didn't utilize.
Review 111:Great hosts, friendly greetings and knowledgeable of the area and things to do while in the area. Although the kitchen dining is separate from the room, it is very clean, has got everything one need to prepare meals and clean dishes afterwards. In the room the toilet and shower area is rather on the small side but the shower head pressure is superb.
Review 112:Had a reservation for 2 nights. The only thing we wanted to do was the Alpine Crossing, but due to bad weather we couldn't go. So we wanted to cancel the 2nd night as there are not many options other than hiking. I understand that they have a 48hrs cancellation policy. That's why they denied and we had to pay for the 2nd night. But the place was half empty and they didn't lose any business cos of us. I would have expected a bit more flexibility.
Review 113:Very friendly staff, very clean room
Review 114:Quiet, idyllic location. Immaculate and well equipped kitchen. Clean, well laid out room and bathroom (great shower!). Beautiful garden. Laundry and lounge with free pool table. Betty is a fabulous host! Could not fault the place at all.
Review 115:Alright for small people. The bathroom area measured 75cm wide, toilet one end, shower the other. The sink was a cloakroom sink which it was impossible to stand in front of and bend over except from the side and as it was only 15cm deep difficult to use. No TV or coffee making facilities in the room, these were in a communal room. One chair and no where to put anything. So lived out of suitcases on the floor.
Review 116:Price
Review 117:Hosts were courteous and communicative, and the unit we stayed in, though simple and compact, was clean and comfortable. Good pressure in the shower. Communal facilities are easily reached and spacious.
Review 118:Betty is super nice. the place is super TIDY. everything is renovated. the kitchen is well equipped and clean. the rooms are small but enough for couple. shower is good as well. best place we had so far.
Review 119:Nothing ... the whole stay was great!
Review 120:Whole relaxed feel of the place - all facilities were scrupulously clean and well organised, everything we needed. Lovely friendly owners - thank you for a great experience, one of the best we've had.
