Reviews for Hotel da Oliveira

Review 1:Room facing square was noisy in AM because of garbage pickup. People in the alley behind the hotel smoked - request a room facing the street. Can't park in front of hotel or drive there for most of the day. Hard to find.

Review 2:Very nice room. Welcoming staff. Excellent attached restaurant.

Review 3:A bit tricky to find and would recommend walking to the location prior to driving there. Once you locate it, there is ample parking available (which is unusual in Portugal!) Awakened by the garbage truck early in the AM.

Review 4:Fantastic location, situated right in the heart of the old city.

Review 5:room and hallways have low levels of lighting. Also bread rolls at Breakfast were clearly from the freezer and not freshly baked. The only negative comments we have.

Review 6:Fantastic location in the historic central area.General ambience and furnishings, room comfort and quality of restaurant food.Excellent value. Also its a shortish walk to the statioin for a very cheap train ride to the centre of Porto.Much better than taking the car or staying in Porto itself.

Review 7:During the night, we were literally woken up by an awful smell. Initially we thought it was coming through the aircon, but it wasn't. The maid smelt it too, in the morning, but by the time reception staff came up, it had disappeared. We could not face a second night in such awful circumstances, so we checked out and the manager told us we had to forfeit our 2nd night's booking charge because it was booked through booking.com

Review 8:Location was excellent. Waiters in the restaurant were friendly and knowledgeable. Cleaning staff were friendly and efficient

Review 9:The way to the hotel is very bumpy, especially with the luggage. As the parking isn't that close to the hotel, one has to walk all the way down. The good thing was that the receptionist was very friendly and helped carrying the luggage.

Review 10:The hotel is located in the historic center, very nice rooms and an excellent restaurant.

Review 11:Not a bad note but needs a refresh - restaurant/wine list - bar list ... Needs a wider option. Lacking in top notch wines and spirits.

Review 12:Location - perfect - in the centre of the "old Town" Staff - pro-active, unobtrusive, efficient Clean and comfortable

Review 13:Parking was tricky to get to! Plan how to get there to avoid the narrow old town streets.

Review 14:Friendly and informative staff, boutique decor, great shower - even better than at a parador we recently stayed in. Personal service and peaceful location yet in the heart of the old town.

Review 15:A small tip for improvement is that the personnel at the restaurant could speak English a bit better.

Review 16:The view and the fact that you are in the middle of the historic center.

Review 17:Very bad, serious, dangerous experience. I could have lost my life. The bedside lamp had an electrical leakage. Of course I could not imagine it. When I tried to move the lamp a little bit aside on the nightstand in order to make place for my computer, with the left hand I grabbed the metal lamp handle and with the right hand I took the tablet. The lamp was on. I immediately got a kick out of 220V and winced a few seconds without being able to release the lamp handle, as my nerves were held contracted by the electrical shock and my brain could not control them. After a few painful seconds, fortunately in some way I lost the grip: lamp and computer jumped away. I was shocked for some minutes and my computer lost the battery charge (as my body lead an electrical shock to it) but was not damaged. After having informed the reception, I hope that they took immediate action in order to prevent other guests to have the same experience.

Review 18:Very nice staff. Breakfast is from 8 to 10, but I had to leave earlier, so they prepared it for me at 7.30. Excellent breakfast menu. Excellent dinner.

Review 19:Parking...on a restricted street so you must park a few blocks away. Dark stairwells, dark room. Staff helpful but seemed really busy.

Review 20:Location. good bed, quiet, shower.

Review 21:Great location for walking through the town. Very attractive setting and nice decor. Beds on the hard side. But overall brilliant value for money. Good honest well cooked food showcasing local dishes.

Review 22:Really great hotel with excellent restaurant. Staff extremely helpful. I had left my phone charger at home and they provided one to me use during my stay. Thanks!!

Review 23:The hotel is a bit dated in layout - but being in the old town there is not much they can do about that

Review 24:Located in the old town with car parking close in a secured street about 200 metres away this hotel is in an ideal postion in the middle of the old town. Rooms are comfortable size, quiet, clean with all amenities needed including free wifi.

Review 25:We a couple of the staff fairly abrupt but for the most part they were friendly and helpful.

Review 26:Parking arranged a short walk from the hotel. Rooms were comfortable and spacious. There was a very good selection for breakfast and the one evening dinner we had at the hotel was very good. The hotel is located in the heart of the old town with the major attractions readily accessible on foot.

Review 27:Low lighting in bathroom; hard to put on makeup; and low lighting in room for reading.

Review 28:Got upgraded from Jr. Suite to Deluxe Suite...which was bigger than my wee cabin at home!! Plus have TWO tvs, for one person!! Lovely surroundings inside hotel room, and also outside....it's location within the heart of the city is amazing! Good breakfast; nice helpful staff Sent email ahead of time with map for free parking with the hotel nearby. Excellent feature, given how hard it is to find parking within an historic city.

Review 29:Do not book this hotel Friday or Saturday night, it is in the main square and the unbelievable noise till 3.30 is unbearable , screaming teenagers and the incessant boom of music , we were extremely annoyed that this was not on there booking.com page and even more annoyed that booking .com conveniently did not receive my complaint by email for 2 days ! So leaving us to suffer the Saturday night rave ,

Review 30:Nice hotel , clean and good size room.

Review 31:First room had great view of Oliveira Square, but was cold being located over an outdoor dining patio on a day with unusually low temperatures. Not a problem for us since we were moved to a warmer room.

Review 32:Wonderful location, close to all key attractions. Staff was very helpful, moving us to warmer, more comfortable room when first room was too cold. Nice breakfast facilities with adequate selection. Convenient parking nearby if you reserve with the hotel. Be sure to get directions to parking area and be prepared to walk 2 blocks to hotel which is located on a pedestrian-only street..

Review 33:El desayuno podía ser mas completo.

Review 34:Localización , facilidad para dejar el coche, personal amable y siempre dispuesto a ayudar. Decoración de las habiraciones .

Review 35:Wifi was a bit slow but still not too slow

Review 36:Excellent location, right at the centre of the historic centre of the city; Nice staff; In general, the best hotel I have ever stayed at so far.

Review 37:Nothing.

Review 38:The hotel is an historical building and the rooms are renoveted in a very stylish fashion. Very confortable and cosy. The location is perfect, right in the historical center. And the personel was really nice and helpful. I would go again if I were in Guimaraes!

Review 39:Easy parking: just drive to the security personnel, who will admit you to on street and secure parking. Location within the historic city center. Modern facility with every amenity you need. Attentive and helpful staff. Excellent breakfast. Guimaraes should be on every visitor's list of things to see! UNESCO World Heritage site. A clean and lively university town!

Review 40:What a beautiful stay we had- everything from the room to the staff to the location were excellent. We didn't want to leave! Our corner room was gorgeous and we appreciated having an adjoining room for our kids.

Review 41:tricky to find initially, poor quality food in the restaurant at night

Review 42:beautiful charming hotel in a great central location, very helpful staff and nicely decorated rooms, free parking

Review 43:If you are driving, I would suggest a previous contact with the hotel so you know where to park your car and approach the hotel (situated in the middle of narrow streets).

Review 44:I enjoyed the location and the atmosphere of this charming hotel. Guimaraes is a lovely city and the hotel is in one of the nicest squares. The decoration is quite trendy and the staff was nice and helpful.

Review 45:The restaurants' evening meals are more towards nouvelle cuisine than traditional portuguese cooking. A bit too sophisticated and pricy for my taste.

Review 46:Modern hotel inside the old town of Guimares (not accessible by car). Comfortable, well appointed room. Spotless clean. The free parking in the neighbouring street. The lively location with plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. Excellent breakfast. Free WiFi.

Review 47:Sometimes we have to get away from the routines and away from what they mean and affect your life. Specially when you need to let some love in it. And when you can, even if just for one night, have a place where all that environment of romance has everything needed to make it even more sweeter. I have found that place, where its just perfect to, let love in. ...And wait... has an incredible restaurant, is inside a Unesco Heritage Medieval Village area...damn next time i will check that.

Review 48:The map provided by booking.com. It did not take us to the correct parking spot but down one way narrow, medieval streets.

Review 49:Friendliness and helpfulness of staff, food. Decor

Review 50:We stayed here for two nights in September, and arrived at a bad time when the town was in the middle of a medieval festival, with roads blocked and traffic almost at a standstill. Had to ring the door bell several times before we were allowed in and our reception was so frosty and indifferent that we felt as though we were intruding. The interior of the hotel seems to be painted throughout in a drab olive green and that included our room. Just about summed up our experience of this hotel

Review 51:Its an ok boutique hotel and the breakfast was good. Its in v good central location and our room was quiet, en suite has bath robes.

Review 52:There was nobody to help with the bags when we left, and since there is no direct access to the hotel, it was a bit conplicated.

Review 53:Everything! The breakfast was delicious.

Review 54:Rooms are a little bit dark, or at least, ours was.

Review 55:Very good hotel, in the center of the old city. Excellent situation to enjoy Guimaraes after the work. Quiet even being in the center, wich in the evenings is quite lively. Excellent staff and a very good restaurant.

Review 56:Nothing that we disliked.

Review 57:We had a room (upgraded to a suite) overlooking the square. The welcome was friendly and helpful. Any questions we had were answered fully. Would happily stay there again.

Review 58:The lighting in the room was inadequate! Most of the rooms are facing other buildings/houses, which are very close and as a result there is not enough light coming from outside! This, coupled with a very basic lighting from the inside, makes the room very dark and almost impossible to be able to read anything in the room. The prblem could be very easily solved by adding some more light in the rooms

Review 59:perfoct location, very well decorated and clean rooms, very good breakfast

Review 60:Instructions for finding the hotel need to be imprioved - it's not directly accessible by car and medieval street layout makes it tricky.

Review 61:Staff very friendly, very nice atmosphere, excellent but slightly pricey evening meal and picturesque location. Top class facilities in the room.

Review 62:The very loud and hyperactive churchbells outside going off every few minutes in the morning.

Review 63:Very nice breakfast, great location, very nice rooms decorated with a very good taste and very soundproof.

Review 64:We booked the junior suite as we thought a little more room would be great with a toddler running around - and we were delighted. The view over the square was fantastic. The room was brilliant and spacious with a sparkling clean large bathroom. Couldn't fault it. The staff were very helpful and breakfast was varied and tasty. The concierge was also very helpful in suggesting a good local restaurant. We had dined in the hotel's restaurant the previous evening - very nice and excellent service, but we wanted some a little more relaxed with a toddler!

Review 65:Very dark rooms with bare walls, stiff sofa bed. No direct access to the hotel by car--had to get parking permit note at the hotel before being allowed into the street parking space is reserved (book in advance) for hotel guests.

Review 66:Excellent location to access tourist spots and restaurants on foot, good breakfast.

Review 67:- The service was awful and waiters were rude; - Only one waiter during breakfast to set up the tables and "restock" the breakfast buffet (waited around 25 minutes to have the table ready); - First day, the waiter completely ignored my table and proceeded to set up empty tables leaving mine for last; - I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, the price is too high for the service they offer;

Review 68:- Room - Big TV - Nice Bathroom - Soundproofing (from exterior)

Review 69:I did not like to colour-theme of the hotel. A dreadfull grey-brownish colour everywhere. I suggest to paint most walls white and keep the other colour for contrast. Rooms were dark and lightning was not sufficient. Booked parking thorugh Booking.com, but did not receive any information on where to park (small street in roundabout with chain).

Review 70:Location was excellent as was staff especially front desk (Fernando, I think). Comfy beds and a good TV. Restaurant was fine too (some portions were quite small though). Breakfast was also fine with fresh orange juice.

Review 71:Restaurant - we had a meal where one of the main courses had to be sent back.

Review 72:Room was gorgeous, view over square was lovely. Plenty of space and light and airy.

Review 73:I particularly appreciated the attentive assistance of the staff at reception. This, together with the comfort of the room, made it an enjoyable stay for us.

Review 74:That Guimaraes is so far from California.

Review 75:Location in center of historic town. Exceptional service by hotel staff: called taxis and even picked up bus tickets for us. Our suite overlooking the square was very quiet even with tourists and diners in the square and effective air conditioning.

Review 76:tense, unfriendly, passive-aggressive attitude of receptionist. Having to press the door bell to gain entry every time we went out. virtual darkness in bathroom and room so can't read, put on make up. noisy bottle bin and rubbish underneath window in alleyway, where we watched one of the bin men going through the paper looking for ..what? mosquitoes. difficult to find using gps as it's not a driveable street, but not on a map

Review 77:leaving. bed comfortable, shower good location. Forna da Vila pasta and pizza restaurant nearby - excellent

Review 78:Breakfast - coffee, hot milk etc kept in flasks but were cold. Nothing is replaced so if you don't get there early the fruit, cereal etc is gone. We came down at before 9am every morning but never got rashers - they were always gone. Didn't like hearing every noise from the room next door - there is a big problem with sound proofing. Rooms and corridors are very dark - I was unable to read in the room.

Review 79:Location was excellent. Lovely bathroom.

Review 80:Nothing to register

Review 81:The place is well located and the hotel personal were very kind.

Review 82:The hotel was very nice but the staff were wonderful.

Review 83:excellent location, delicious breakfast, convenient parking

Review 84:Parking a problem and no porters!

Review 85:Excellent Hotel

Review 86:Breakfast lacks behind the other services; staff not very attentive (left dirty dishes for too long at empty tables)

Review 87:Very friendly staff

Review 88:Location was excellent. It had many electrical outlets in bathroom, charming hotel, great bathrooms, secure hotel and city.

Review 89:Comfortable hotel in the best location in the city. Staff professional and friendly. Restaurant serves refined food and wines

Review 90:The hotel was very well situated in the old town and was very tastefully decorated in shades of Farrow & Ball.

Review 93:Dark decor

Review 94:Very central location, small and personal.
