Reviews for Hotel Olivedo
Review 1:The hotel specifies its adult only hotel. Holiday was ruined by one sleepless night with a baby crying in adjoining room, noise at breakfast. When I book an adult only hotel for peace and quiet I don't expect the hotel to change their policy
Review 2:Since the hotel has recently been renovated which is a big plus, there was a smell of paint in the room. This is not a major negative though. My overall experience at this hotel was wonderful.
Review 3:The hotel is very charming and is in an excellent location. The ferry and speed boat piers are right in front of the hotel making it very convenient to go anywhere. The service was truly excellent. They really take care of you. It looks like the hotel has recently been renovated as well. Personally I think Varenna is one of the best areas (if not the best) to stay in Lake Como.
Review 4:Nothing
Review 5:The location is fantastic as its right next to the pier and you can reach the train station easily in 5 mins by walk. Staffs are nice and we enjoy the view from our rooms.
Review 6:Owner smoked outside and in hotel - it smelled like smoke. Morning staff was helpful and very very nice as was the breakfast. Evening owner was unhelpful and uninterested in assisting us with questions etc....decor was old and worn. This could be an amazing hotel with a few updates.
Review 7:Location - perfect and stunning views
Review 8:Pillows were not really pillows. Not in the sense we were used to. They were rock hard and extremely flat. No alternatives existed so sleep was difficult.
Review 9:Location was perfect for the ferry. Perfect! The breakfast staff was absolutely fantastic, so attentive and agreeable.
Review 10:Our room had a stunning view of Lake Como and was walking distance to the ferries. We walked to the hotel from the train station, but took a taxi back (uphill). The hotel restaurant was convenient for dinner.
Review 11:Excellent staff and the location was ideal. The hotel is on the waterfront where everything is happening and an easy train ride to Milan for a day trip. Secure parking.
Review 12:I liked the Italian character of the building and the excellent location on the water right next to the ferry stop. The owner of the hotel and staff are very helpful. There would be great views from the lower floors but 4th floor rooms have small windows that are not easy to look out of! There is a lift which goes as far as the 3rd floor.
Review 13:the extremely unfriendly and belligerent owner, the lack of the lift going to he 4th floor where we had been put. The room itself was dark, shabbily furnished and the two windows in it were placed as follows; one was at floor level so that if you lay on your stomach you could see out of it, the other was above it at a height of about 6feet, but a rustic step had been placed for one to climb on and look out! The widescreen TV was very very small and the satellite connection gave a choice of CNN,Euronews or BBC world news only. I had chosen this hotel because of its position and the fact that it had a lift, but as the very small lift (about 1mtre square) only went to the third floor there were 17 steps to negotiate to the fourth floor, not a good thing with luggage The shuttle service is actually a taxi which charges 10euros for the 2 - 3 minute drive up and/or down the very steep hill from the station.
Review 14:the location of the hotel, the bathroom was OK with plenty of shower gel and shampoo
Review 15:Heat broken in room. Owner not the friendliest..at first. Speak a little Italian and chat with Laura...it will make your stay great! If your lucky, you will see Nonna in her slippers with her doggie at top of the stairs:) Hotel swayed pretty bad (like on a boat). Ferry docks just steps away from the front of hotel. Maybe attached to foundation??
Review 16:Traveled with sister and stayed 2 nights 10/2/15. Stunning "old world" style, charming small hotel. Restaurant and a separate coffee bar with covered patio. Best location in Varenna. Best homemade food (pumpkin gnocchi awesome). Excellent breakfast buffet. Best cappuccino and cornetti in Italy! This was our first stop before Venice, Florence, Amalfi, Rome. NONE of those places compared to the cappuccino (made personally by Laura) & cornetti. Martino was great too! Rooms very clean with floor to ceiling windows, balcony, gorgeous views of Lago Como. Wish we had stayed longer here. Hotel Olivedo e bella!
Review 17:Booked a cheap room and got a cheap room. Must have been Where the helpl stayed at one time.
Review 18:Proximity to view and Varenna. Good walking site. Enjoyed the activity of the ferry.
Review 19:My room, although clean and well appointed, was without a window, so I couldn't look out to the lake. Owner offered to change my room, but I declined. I wish I had changed rooms.
Review 20:Owner , Laura, and staff were very attentive and friendly. Having a restaurant in the hotel was a big plus for us as we arrived at the end of the season in late October and it was getting chilly at night. Good to stay in the hotel in the evening. Oh, food and wine delicious in their restaurant.
Review 21:While not in the main part of town this hotel is close to the railway station and a charming walk to town around the coast. However the main thing to like is the sheer charm of the place. There was an old world feel to the place that I kept expecting Hercule Poirot to shuffle into the dining room.
Review 22:only three channels of tv. I had no opportunity to receive news from my country. If it's raining and you must stay at room, bad thing
Review 23:all was normal, nothing awesome.
Review 24:Staff from the moment we arrived at the hotel were unfriendly and unhelpful. Location doesn't make up for service. And this hotel doesn't understand the basic concept of it!
Review 25:It was quiet.
Review 26:As has been previously mentioned, the lady owner has an unfortunate, very abrupt & morose manner....she seems very unhappy. It would be a much happier experience if she at least tried to be pleasant.
Review 27:We had a room with a fantastic view over the lake.....spotlessly clean, with a very modern bathroom. Breakfast was adequate & the waiter was charming. Absolutely no smell of smoke as had been mentioned in other reviews.
Review 28:Location. A grand hotel which feels so homely. Friendly staff. Ferry close, works like an alarm clock. Walking distance to town centre and station. Great for people with reduced mobility
Review 29:One of the worst hotel experiences we've ever had. We paid extra for the lake view but had a room behind the hotel with very little view. The bathroom was dirty. The front office staff woman was rude to us and other guests. Would NOT recommend this place.
Review 30:Breakfast was a little underwhelming.
Review 31:The hotel is perfectly situated next to the water and a very short walk to the main town. It's full of charm, lovely old style feel to it. Our room was lovely, overlooking lake Como.
Review 32:We hated the fact that we had scheduled way too short a time, there.
Review 33:The incredibly warm welcome we received from our hostess, Signora Colombo and her staff, after a hard days travel.
Review 34:limited selection of food during breakfast, as this is close to the ferry it may be a little disturbing for come guests - please verify Google Streetview before coming
Review 35:Staff, atmosphere, abmience - you look like in old, north-italian manor, it cannot be closer to the ferry:), space in the room
Review 36:The room was cold when we checked in and we found out the owner has control over the heat. She ran it from exactly 7 am to 9:30 am. For the money spent, we should have been able to control the temperature in our own room. The walls were a little thin.
Review 37:The location is great - right on the water and our room had a wonderful view. It is right by the docks if you wanted to visit other cities in Varenna. The building is old but beautiful (quaint) with antique furniture. The breakfast was good.
Review 38:No window in the room except for a really tiny one that is situated atthe bottom of the wall. Very weird because that means you have to stoodon the floor and bend your body to the side in order to look out.No wine glasses - We asked the lady owner if we could borrow two wine glasses since we bought a bottle of wine. She said the wine glasses are in the room. We searched everywhere and only found two plastic cups in the toilet. We went down to the reception again and informed her that we could not find the wine glasses she mentioned. This time her reply was, the two plastic cups are the only ones we provide. There were plenty of wine glasses lying around and we asked if we could borrow two wine glasses but she said no. C'mon who drinks wine in plastic cups in a hotel! We have stayed in a number of hotels in Italy and this is the only hotel that we have came across that refused to provide wine glasses. The tiny elevator is the slowest I have seen in my entire life.
Review 39:The hotel is located in a very good location, near the train station andright in front of the ferry terminal to Bellagio and Maggiore.Restaurants are everywhere.
Review 40:Close to dock and train. Friendly and helpful staff. Very old but well kept. Maybe a little close to the dock but ok. We we had a top floor atic room. No view, large tub with interesting waist level shower.
Review 41:Location is great. Ferry right in front of hotel and the food in this hotel you will not believe how good it is. Also the town itself is right out of a Italian movie.GREAT
Review 42:Did not like the attic room on the top floor which had limited outlook which made it feel claustrophobic. However was not a major issue.
Review 43:Location next to ferry terminal. Close to train station.
Review 44:We were on the top floor and the lift wss not working which made taking our luggage up and down difficult.
Review 45:The hotel was very quaint, the view from the room was spectacular and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 46:We had an attic room with no window which we could see thru . Also the elevator ( 4 floors was essential unusable .
Review 47:Location next to Ferry Boats and the lake .
Review 48:The smell of cigarette smoke often pervaded the hotel - even the unfriendly and terse owner Laura smoked in the reception area although our nice room on the 2nd floor was fine once inside. We were offered secure ar parking at 17 Euro/day but parked on the street just 100 metres away for free - this was not pointed out to us !
Review 49:The location was excellent - right opposite the ferry terminal. There were lovely restaurants adjacent to the hotel and even more just 5 minutes walk away overlooking the lake. Our room - #11- had 2 lovely windows and a balcony overlooking the lake with stunning views. It was quiet with double glazing.
Review 50:Even though we visited late September when I would say it is out of season, this is still a very busy area, and did not feel like you could relax around the hotel due to volume of people and traffic around. A main point for people coming in on the train, and a very busy ferry port right outside between the hotel and lake . I could imagine this is overwhelming in peak season. We headed off into Varenna instead which is quiet and beautiful. We did not engage much with the owner, but after an initial pleasant welcome, we felt an uncomfortable vibe.
Review 51:The hotel is located in an ideal position, quickly accessible by train and ferry. Beautifully set a few metres from the lakes edge. The rooms are very clean and classic . Wooden slate doors opening out onto a small balcony is very cute, with a wonderful view over the lake .
Review 52:Customer service was outstanding. Laura, Christian and the rest of the staff were pleasant and very helpful in all matters. Restaurant was very good as well.
Review 53:The mattress was thin and hard and the pillows were very thin. An update on this would make the hotel wonderful.
Review 54:The location of this hotel is wonderful and the hotel is lovely and well preserved. The staff are hard working and gracious. The proprietress is perfect for this great dame hotel.
Review 55:Out reception was terrible. I thought parking was included and this imediatly brought out a vindictive side of Laura. I was told I could park else where which was a mile plus away. After looking we found that was impossible. Then she said her lot was full and we looked again. Then the rate was quoted as 2 Euro more. After eating humble pie and my wife's intervention she she allowed us intoher spacious parking lot saying Laura knows best. We then had a better relationship but walked in eggs not to offend her. Our room was on the 4th level and the advertised lift only goes to 3. The view was non existent. You had to layl on the floor to look out the portal window which In case of fire you are to break out that window and call for help. (As written in the safety plan) the smell of cigarette smoke and electric tape on some wiring made that a concern. The pillows where extremely hard. Of the four hotels we stayed in on this trip this is the only hotel that was not outstanding. We woul not stay here again.
Review 56:The location is ideal for using the ferry system to explore Lake Comp. breakfast was basic but very good. The breakfast staff was very good and helpful. We ate dinner and found the meal very good and at a good price.
Review 57:The most beautiful views from the Juliette balcony of Lake Como. Laura was a great personality - certainly our most favourite Italian place to stay - quaint old fashioned charm right by the ferry.
Review 58:We would recommend that the hotel improves it's wifi signal which we found impossible to connect to. The breakfast buffet was fine, although a little lacking in variety and invariably would run out of brown bread on a daily basis.
Review 59:We liked this hotel because it had a very traditional Italian feel. The location was good as it was a short walk from both the town and railway station and situated opposite the ferry. We had no problems with any of the staff and found the waiter who served us breakfast every day to be particularly friendly and obliging. The room that we stayed in was very clean and comfortable and had beautiful lake views. We paid extra for a 'Superior Room' which in our opinion was worth the extra expense. We found the proprietor Laura to be a formidable character who runs the hotel efficiently.
Review 60:Excellent location with stunning views (ask for room 25 for best view). Its an old Italian style, elegant and quirky small hotel with great sized rooms and very friendly & helpful staff. The food is excellent. The hotel looks onto the lake by the ferry stops (both car and foot) so excellently placed for exploring Varenna and the rest of Lake Como. We will definitely stay there again if we return to Lake Como
Review 61:Thought being near the wharf would be good, as it had been with other hotels, but this was very noisy and a bar next door was also noisy. Otherwise everything was good.
Review 62:For us it was not a a bad experience, it was part of the interesting life in the former locality of Olivedo that gives the name of the hotel - the presence of the embarking point for passenger ships/ferries crossing the lake. Some travelers may dislike the traffic (hard to call it "crowd") but we loved it.
Review 63:Hotel Olivedo is a classical on lake Como. It hosts history and tradition and is managed in symbiosis of preservation of classical atemporal spirit and recourse to technology. The perefectly clean rooms look as some 60 years ago, but with impecable linnen. The bathrooms are new with modern sanitary installations. The view to the lake is breathtaking. The business is run effectively and efficiently like many Italian businesses in tourism. Signora Laura really is one of the most efficient hotel managers we have seen in 36 countries visited. Around the hotel one can have meals in a family run restaurant, rent a boat with a family run business, have a bath in a family run strand, etc - this is how things go there...
Review 64:Typical Italian hotel- tiny room and awkward shower. There was a 1230 curfew, but Varenna is a sleepy town so probably not much of an issue for most guests.
Review 65:Location was great, right in front of the ferry. The staff was friendly, the breakfast was varied and the rooms were clean.
Review 66:The Location is excellent and the staff were very helpful, friendly and willing to assist with any of our requests. Absolutely charming hostess named Laura was busy and efficient and all of her family were delightful. We had an early morning departure by train and so a warm croissant and coffees were served early prior to our departure. We will happily return to this magic place,
Review 67:We were in the annex to the hotel which was very close by but access was up a short steep road, which meant pulling heavy bags along the cobbles. extremely hot the day we arrived so the air conditioned room was very welcome!
Review 68:Excellent location facing the ferry stop. Beautiful, short stroll under the arbour to the old town.
Review 69:Room appeared to be attic conversion. Elevator did not ascend to that top level. Had to walk up one flight. Inadequate windows prevented what would have been an otherwise great view of Lake Como.
Review 70:Easy access from train station and opposite ferry dock. Good air conditioning and Wi Fi. Large bed. Nice bathroom.
Review 71:We loved Laura the owner. She made us feel welcome! The food was delicious. Our room was beautiful, well air conditioned and the view a million dollar view!
Review 72:The lift is very very very slow and like a sauna box and also very small we had to use the stairs to the third floor all time . The air conditioned is switched off automatically in the morning and is turned on once the cleaning lady did the room ,at night it comes on and off I believe is set to a certain temperature . The breakfast can do with a bit of improvement not much variety only have boiled eggs, no bacon one type of cheese everyday, and ham, only one type of croissant . Did not try their restaurant for dinner but there are lots of other restaurants to go to with very reasonable prices.
Review 73:It is just at the front where you take the boat to go different places, and 10 minutes from the train station the view from both windows are fantastic on the third floor.
Review 74:Coffee served at breakfast was very poor - dishwater! Bit of surprise given Italy's reputation for good coffee.
Review 75:Hotel full of character - lovely room overlooking Lake Como. Good parking facilities. Good location for pretty walk along side of Lake to explore Varenna. Would stay here again (despite the coffee!)
Review 76:No complaints.
Review 77:The air-conditioning in the bedroom was very welcome as temperature outside rose to 39C. The view overlooking the lake from the bedroom window was wonderful.
Review 78:Laura, although well informed and well spoken, can be quite harsh at times. The beds were very hard as were the pillows.
Review 79:The locations is very good near the ferry terminals. But away from the hustle and bustle. It is just a short ferry ride to Bellagio, Menagio etc.
Review 80:Because it is close to the ferry it cuts both ways: weekends can get crowded with people and noisy cars; however, the rooms have double paned glass and are quiet. On the other hand the ferry is convenient to take. Moreover the hotel is close to the train station.
Review 81:Ambience is wonderful. The proprietoress, Laura, is quiet nice and genuinely interested in her guests.
Review 82:Everything about this hotel is lovely: the position, the rooms, the building, the welcome and the people. The place has been restored/preserved so beautifully, you really get a feel of how things must have been in times gone by. Our second visit but definitely not our last!
Review 83:Inside noise travels through the building and from room to room.
Review 84:Location on Lake Como and next to Ferry. Very welcoming friendly staff. Comfortable room with great view. Excellent soundproofing to outside noise.
Review 85:Nothing, I was very happy
Review 86:The owner of this Hotel couldn't have been more accomodating, real old world Italian charm. She gave me a hug and kiss on both cheeks after me only being their one night. The rooms were very compfortable and the whole hotel ozzed that 1920's Como Lake charm that has bben lost withbigger tourist hotels. Loved it.
Review 87:Nothing really.
Review 88:Location with lake view & ferry stop right in front of hotel; food; room (quiet with good air-con, opening windows, blankets, i.e. cool enough to sleep); value for money; staff all excellent.
Review 89:This is not a cheap hotel (180 Euro per night), which would be fine given the location & building. But indifferent service and school like rules let the Oviedo down - cross the manageress if your feeling brave!
Review 90:Great location, lovely old building plus balcony overlooking the lake. Although unprofessional, the waiters arguing in front of guests at breakfast is always entertaining!
Review 91:I cannot think of any negatives.
Review 92:We caught the train from Milan Central Station and within an hour were in Varenna. Just a 5 minute walk from the station was our hotel with the ferry port right outside, which I thought would be noisy. We were staying in a Lake view room at the front of the hotel and the view was magnificent. With the windows closed the room was completely silent. The ferry port outside became a godsend as we used it to go over to Bellagio and we didn't have to wait around. The hotel had everything I expected an old Italian hotel by the lake would have and the owner was a great character, always greeted me by name and was the epitome of the place. The most modern thing was the WIFI but that is all I needed. Loved this place and left totally relaxed.
Review 93:The air conditioner could have been stronger. I was there during one of the European heat waves, and it would've been nice to have been a little cooler, both in the room, and the breakfast room. However, once the weather cooled off, so did the room. I wasn't able to get the hair dryer in the bathroom to work.
Review 94:Great location and view of Lake Como!
Review 95:Lovely old building with original features coupled with new modern bathrooms. The owner,Laura, and her team made us really welcome. They were friendly and helpful and the location was superb making it easy to get anywhere on the lake with no effort. Great food and we had a very enjoyable stay
Review 96:Fleas in the spare blanket ! Breakfast outdoors despite not warm enough.(June) Phones in room unable to phone outside Italy. Even reception phone could not ! WiFi dodgy
Review 97:being right at ferry point a great advantage. View of Lake Como and Mont Santa Croce from 3rd floor louvered windows superb. Staff friendly and very helpful during crisis with mobile phone. Very grateful for lift.
Review 98:Not one thing !
Review 99:The location was outstanding, being just 20m from the ferry wharf with amazing views over gorgeous Lake Como. Charming village. Staff were helpful and pleasant. Rooms had an old style charm while also providing all the modern comforts we expect ( wifi, air con, sound proofing, great bed and shower facilities, tv etc). Breakfast was wonderful- wide choice and always plenty available. Loved every minute of our stay.
Review 100:The rigidity of the proprietor, Linda, turned out to be a major factor in our stay. We had imagined that contact with her would be minimal, but as it happened, her unpleasantness cast a shadow on the whole visit and manifested itself in tiny practical ways (as when we needed extra towels).
Review 101:Location is convenient if noisy, right at two ferry docks. View from balcony is spectacular. Breakfast is adequate (good eggs) but perhaps not up to the current standard for hotels in northern Italy. Varenna is a great comune—unpretentious—from which to visit Como.
Review 102:Early morning noise from ferry opposite hotel.
Review 103:Good restaurant, breakfast OK. Parking available, but expensive. Rooms in annex large and comfortable, but up quite steep cobbled alley.
Review 104:We stayed with my parents in the annex section where we had a deck with 2 rooms attached. We loved watching the view and drinking wine together it was so relaxing!
Review 105:Great location from train station and boat dock to visit other towns in the area. Lovely place rooms with great views of the Alps. Laura is very helpful:)
Review 106:Bed was kind of hard. Breakfast wasn't extensive but still enough to get your day started!
Review 107:Laura is a fabulous Hotel host. She made me feel absolutely comfortable and excited to be staying at her hotel. my room was perfect, I had views from two windows. The bathrooms are very updated. proximity to the ferries was perfect.
Review 108:Standard room was dated no stand up shower. No view of lake. Room on 4th floor, elevator only went to 3rd floor.
Review 109:Hotel located across from ferry making it very convenient. Parking provided at a cost of $20 per day. Owner and staff very accomadating. Dinner at hotel was very good.
Review 110:Laura and her staff very welcoming and helpful during our stay. Breakfast excellent, had dinner 2 evenings, excellent. Cannot beat the location. It's a step back in time, thoroughly enjoyed.
Review 111:First, the staff were the best. Paula made us feel very welcome and our room had the most fantastic views of Lake Como. The staff helped make our 50th anniversary very successful. Thank you again
Review 112:Because we had a early departure on our last day hot water heater hadn't turned on. Cold shower. Outside of that everything was top notch.
Review 113:Location was great. Laura and staff did a excellent job to make our stay very memorable.
Review 114:Location is nice and close to both train station and pier.I feel like this hotel is like a heritage,I love it much. Decoration is great in room and overall is very comfortable, also with a nice lake view. Staff are really nice too.
Review 115:Only issue we had was that AC was not on. We found out the government does not allow it on until June 15th! In all honesty, when it was warm during day, the night always cooled off.
Review 116:The hotel is a generational, family run business. It is older but well maintained. The staff works very hard and owner greets you coming and going.
Review 117:Nothing.
Review 118:The parking was right on site, very secure and convenient. Wifi excellent. Easy walk to shops and ferry across the street. With windows closed very quiet although right in the center of town.
Review 119:This hotel sits physically across the street from the ferries and ticket offices. It can get quite noisy. However the room we stayed in was updated with soundproof windows. The bathroom was well appointed and the room comfortable. The staff was great, and the location is perfect with the train station and village life just a short walk. Enjoyed our stay tremendously.
Review 120:Breakfast items ran out quickly and were not resupplied. Itwould be great if there were a coffee dispenser. As it was coffee was limited.
Review 121:We had a terrace room overlooking the lake. Fine weather made it heavenly.
Review 122:The bed was really comfortable and WiFi was excellent. We asked for a lake view and got it, with the Annex room that we were in. Overall very much enjoyed our stay.
Review 123:Lovely rooms with a spectacular view of the lake. Large, modern bathrooms. Great restaurant. The staff made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived until we left. Very convenient to ferry.
Review 124:Laura smoking inside the Hotel
Review 125:Stayed 5 nights in April. We've been planning this trip since June of last year. Lots of choices of which village / hotel to stay. I will recommend Varenna for the village & Hotel Olivedo for your stay. Why I liked this hotel; * Located on the Lake by the Ferry stop. * Priced right. * Only 14 rooms. We had room #22. Large & an excellent view of the Lake. * Great King bed. Hard to find in Europe. I'm 6'4". * Bathroom was large & modern w/ an excellent shower. * Solid WiFi connection. * Breakfast included (just ok) * Short walk to the Train Station (Milan 1 hr away) * Quiet (even w/ the ferry stop). * Christian (staff) was so nice to us. Finally, a lot has been written about the proprietor Laura. I found her very polite and accommodating. She is the 3rd generation to run the hotel. Her grandfather Luigi opened the place in 1896. She is a true business woman and definitely "rules the roost". Not a lot of "fluff" from her. Wish she wouldn't smoke in the hotel. I recommend you stay there.
