Reviews for Hotel Royal Victoria

Review 1:Only negative thing is the parking space given in the garage was extremely small so remember not to bring a large size car!

Review 2:The location of the property was excellent ! Rooms were cleanabd comfortable with great views of the beautiful lake. We had a room with a good size balcony overlooking the waters ! Hotel has a nice restaurant . We also tried the restaurant across the street and it was very good also. Overall experience was fantastic and would return again .

Review 3:For the first time on this trip to Italy, I felt like the hotel staff saw me as just a dollar sign. Everyone was so gracious everywhere else we stayed, but here, it seemed like almost a cattle call, no one was particularly friendly or accommodating, but I suppose at least they were efficient. Nothing more than than terse, static interaction with the staff, which was a shame, the place is amazing otherwise. I wouldn't even call it a deal-breaker, just an unpleasant surprise.

Review 4:The property itself was immaculate, modern, the view was unbelievable, breakfast was outstanding, from that standpoint an amazing hotel.

Review 5:Stunning views from the lake view room! Rooms newly and beautifully renovated. Service was friendly and accomodating. Parking is convenient nearby.

Review 6:nothing. great place

Review 7:The view from the pool, balcony was stunning. The hotel was very welcoming and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and had a huge bathroom. The location was terrific

Review 8:Breakfast Staffs are a bit cold & robot, especially the lady who checked us in!! The lady at the front desk who help us checked out was pretty nice thou.

Review 9:The underroof suit is nice & comfy. Decoration The fake fireplace^^ Location

Review 10:Too few staff. It has recently been 'modernised' and the rooms resemble good student accomodation with a dark style of interior decoration. It is located next to a very noisy square which if you have a room overlooking it guarantees a very poor night sleep.

Review 11:Fabulous location on Lake Como.

Review 12:amazing location and lovely facility - loved the balcony rooms overlooking the lake - perfect all the way around! loved the terraced property - view of the lake from up high. Well-maintained - highlight of our trip.

Review 13:One staff person in Gourmet restaurant was dismissive and condescending.Question why they charge a cover to eat there when you are a hotel guestalready paying for the view.

Review 14:Views,breakfast, old world charm, balcony, pool area

Review 15:Very good location with lake views from the bedroom. The food was excellent and the restaurant overlooks the lake. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 16:Our room (lake view double) needed a full-length mirror. Air conditioner was great but needed a manual for the remote. Pool was colder than the lake.

Review 17:The hotel was what we expected for the price; good location (up the hill from the very busy restaurants but still only 10 minutes to the boat), an excellent lake view and amenities like a pool, lake access and a big breakfast spread.

Review 18:Hotel royal victoria Mind the room!!! We reserved a room to the back. Idid expect a nice view to the piazza,(as told) but we got a cave with noview at all!!!! And I Do not like caves. I called to make a booking withthe hotel and the asking price was e 240 ( called a bargain) and we weretold it was the only room left. We then book through Booking.com,because, this time, it was cheaper e195 The room itself was ok, Nothingreally special. Nothing to place your luggage on. One step down to thebed. We got only one pillow each and one blanket to share. Usually wefind more pillows and a duvet blanket in the room, but there was none. The bed was terrible, and the pillow flat and stone hard. I woke up inthe middle of the night with severe headache The bath was very nice. Both rooms had very little light, and then no natural light The tv wason the small side, and the tv picture had odd colours, but we did notuse it anyway. There was no free Wi-Fi. Moreover it was raining, no oneto blame for that, but then we had to close the door, which was the onlylight in. Very nice breakfast served on a beautiful balcony over thegarden. I would not have stand another night in that room. We went overto hotel Metropole in Bellagio which was much, much nicer and got awonderful front room for several nights..

Review 19:had a wedding that took over whole hotel. Very disruptive as spent whole day organising it and then wedding very noisy. Rooms very small. View on balcony breathtaking but then chairs to sit on balcony very uncomfortable

Review 20:location was amazing. Loved Como and Varenna

Review 21:You have to request a blanket from the front desk. I didn't realize this. So the first night I was hot and cold and didn't sleep well because of it. I wish they had told me blankets were available upon request.

Review 22:The view from the room was spectacular, both from our balcony and the restaurant. Breakfast was included, their bread has beed the best so far. I enjoyed their fresh fruit bar. Eggs were a little runny, but they did have hard boiled eggs. Coffee was a little strong for my taste but I was able to order Americanos. Their beds are firm, which I prefer. It was a little too firm for my fiance. Pillows are soft. We loved that they had direct access to the lake. Ferry was only a short walk away.

Review 23:We sprung for a junior suite with a lake view for a special occasion and it was amazing. Opening the doors to the balcony every morning was breathtaking. Even the standard lake view rooms seemed great. It's a quiet and charming part of Lake Como. The rooms are luxurious and hard to forget. Staff was great and will help you in small and random ways, very friendly. I actually cried when I left.

Review 24:A bit impersonal, no dressing gowns when we should have had them. Lack of shade around the pool and better to get one of the lake view rooms with chairs on the balcony. Poor lighting in the bathroom.

Review 25:Location, Varenna, great view from balcony.

Review 26:Difficult wifi

Review 27:Beautiful views of the lake. Three couples traveling together & we were given lake front rooms side by side with adjoining terrace. Step out the front door to the beautiful village of Varennna.

Review 28:The room was a bit small but they made the space extremely functional.

Review 29:Loved the view from our room (we had a juliet balcony)!! The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was very modern. Bathroom was perfect - modern and a good size. Alex was amazing and sent us step by step directions on how to arrive to the hotel from the Milan airport.

Review 30:Plastick glasses in the room. Noisiy a/c. No list of English Channels. Only one key. When you leave the room all power goes off, except for a/c, so your electronic devices can't charge.

Review 31:Location and staff was trying to be helpful The dinner at the restaurant was very good. Compliments to the chef.

Review 32:Very uncomfortable bed Noisy - across from bell tower with many bell rings at sleeping time Annoying air conditioner controls and functions Annoying lighting

Review 33:Location

Review 34:I don't know why they kept the tragically ugly wallpaper on our room. Talk about qgrandma ugly.

Review 35:This hotel was one of the top hotels in the area without being too extravagant in price. Rooms and common areas were updated, retaining historic touches. We enjoyed the beautiful view from our balcony that overlooked the lake and pool. Breakfast buffet was amazing as was the staff. We were there for the July 5th fest by chance. It was magical. Other hotels in town and area were not as nicely situated/outfitted for the price.

Review 36:Wifi and breakfast not great, didn't exactly go to como to surf the net, and better places to grab food on the water.

Review 37:Beautiful hotel right on the water in the center of town. Upgraded us for free to junior suite. HIGHLY recommend

Review 38:Our second visit to both Varenna and to this hotel, which has had recent renovations. Lake view rooms especially on upper floors have to be some of the most breathtaking anywhere. The Gourmet Resteraunt is very good. The Grill Resteraunt a good standard. Suite rooms spacious with good facilities and great shower. Welcoming friendly staff. Easily reached by train from Milan in just over an hour.

Review 39:We paid for the WiFi but didn't like having to log in every time we came back to the hotel.

Review 40:The view from our room was amazing, worth the cost. Breakfast was quite a spread and offered everything we wanted! Our welcome drink on the patio was a lovely bonus that we enjoyed! Varenna is so small that it was easy to walk to everywhere we wanted to go, but arriving with luggage and climbing the stairs was tiring!

Review 41:The non-functioning wifi was the only aspect of the hotel that wasn't great.

Review 42:Onsite restaurant was excellent for dinner. Our best dinner in Varenna!

Review 43:Front desk staff poor for hotel rating; except for one bar manager & one waiter, food service staff marginal. Poor management of travel agent conference: participants epitomized "Ugly American" image -- noisy, rude, inconsiderate -- hotel management's decision to collocate with other guests for Sunday evening dinner made experience unpleasant & ruined ambiance for other guests.

Review 44:View & Room & Town

Review 45:Wifi was not in our room. But maybe that was a good thing. Let us detach from the fast pace of the real world. Good for vacation.

Review 46:A little piece of old world heaven.

Review 47:The air con in the room was a bit temperamental, even with the windows closed!

Review 48:This hotel had a team of lovely friendly staff working in all areas. The food was amazing and the drinks reasonable for a hotel of this standard The swimming pool was lovely , possibly not enough sun loungers but then you did have access to the lake!

Review 49:Air conditioner tended to drip condensate water when operated in humid weather.

Review 50:Great location. Anywhere in Varenna is great, but the hotel is right on the charming central square with restaurants and not on the direct and crowded beaten path along the lake.

Review 51:You have to pay for WiFi access. Haven't had to do that in about 7 years. Plenty of local cafes have free WiFi as an alternative though

Review 52:Location, atmosphere, pool, access to the lake, friendly attentive staff, room quality, cleanliness, food, drink, you name it - its great

Review 53:There was nothing not to like.

Review 54:Our room had a breathtaking view. The standard of food and service at the lakeside restaurant was excellent and the ambience of the outdoor seating area was superb. The location in the heart of the charming village was perfect.

Review 55:Maybe a little too stiff/stuffy

Review 56:Charming and personal. The gentleman in charge in dining area was charming and so efficient. Always greeted us with a smile and ready to provide excellent service. was charming and so

Review 57:We were so happy to have chosen Varenna, Lake Como as the location and this hotel was perfect. Location was spectacular, view of lake amazing. Dinner was also wonderful. Perfection.

Review 58:Although the bathroom is well appointed it lacks shelving space especially when you stay 4 nights.

Review 59:Rooms with a balcony have great views, are comfortable and elegant. The restaurant on the terrace is very pleasant .

Review 60:We stayed for 3 nights in a room facing the square. The room was very spacious and so was the bathroom. We actually left passports and wife's jewellery in the safe and received a phone call less than 20 minutes after we left. All in all it was an enjoyable stay. The bells rang which we loved, and they stopped for a good nights sleep! Full breakfast was served overlooking Lake Como, what a view!

Review 61:The mattress is horrible! Can't be worst than that, and I travel a lot and slept in all kinds of places, cheap or expensive. This bed was so uncomfortable I was in so much pain, I couldn't walk for two days after sleeping there (I'm only 40!) and my wife had quite a painful back herself. And it's brand new! they just changed the beds... Apart from that, the service would be ok for a 2 stars hotel definitely not a 4. They don't provide blankets and when you ask for one they will bring you a duvet but without the cover... Not very hygienic or comfortable... I tried to raised the matter but they were completely unaware that a duvet goes inside a cover... Wifi is paying but doesn't really work. Bathroom is tiny and towels hangs above the toilets...

Review 62:The location is great and Varenna is a beautiful village. Nice view from the restaurant. It's clean. They give you good cookies.

Review 63:Italian vacation time at it's best. Beautiful hotel in a sleepy little resort. It's hard to be more relaxed! Very professional and accommodating staff.

Review 64:Tea & Coffee making facilities in the bedroom would be of benefit.

Review 65:Extremely pleasant & helpful staff. Fantastic views from bedroom balcony. Excellent food in the restaurant. Situated in a lovely little town and convenient for the ferries and the railway.

Review 66:Staff were aloof and not particularly warm & friendly with the exception of the night concierge. Wifi should be free in a hotel of this standard.

Review 67:The sounds from the lake & the village & the autumn sun flooding into the room. This is why Queen Victoria chose this location. The breakfasts were exceptional.

Review 68:It's not a heated pool but, hey, life is good.

Review 69:The location of this hotel is superb and it's even better if you splurge on a lake view. It's worth it.

Review 70:TVs were mounted a little bit too high on the wall so that when laying in bed, the angle creates a glare that makes it slightly difficult to see the screen. I love a waterfall showerhead, but it's mounted in a way so that your face practically touches the glass of the shower door. I also wish that the lake were accessible directly from the property. (Perhaps it is & I should've asked.) Although the hotel is directly on the lake, it appeared as if you would have to exit the hotel & access the lake from the public access point alongside the hotel to swim in the lake itself.

Review 71:The rooms were newly renovated & nicely decorated. It felt quiet & private. There was a breathtaking view from the room & a very comfortable terrace. It has numerous & spacious common areas. We enjoyed free hotel merchandise such as a reuseable shopping bag & slippers. We appreciated the poolside bar service, including a complimentary glass of champagne. It's easy to reach on foot from the train station, easy access on foot to the ferry & waterfront walk & there are variety of dining options in & around the hotel. Convenient shopping on same block as hotel to buy wine, beer, water & snacks, train tickets & caffe.

Review 72:Wifi wasn't included. The wifi that we paid for was very weak and only worked in the hotel lobby (and not in the room).

Review 73:Upgraded to a lovely spacious room with a balcony overlooking Lake Como. Hugh bathroom - shower had great water pressure. Staff were helpful with making bookings / recommendations for meals. Also received a welcome drink on our first evening. Good selection if breakfast buffet items.

Review 74:We were absolutely thrilled to experience the gorgeous views and relaxation of Varenna and Lake Como from this hotel. We arrived here at the end of a two week trip through France and Italy, and everything about the hotel was just what we needed. The breakfast spread was fabulous - everything from eggs, fruits, salad, meats, juice, and even prosecco. Every aspect of our stay made us feel so welcome, from the cocktails and the service to the late night pizza made especially for us by the cafe the evening we arrived. A must stay if you're heading to Varenna!

Review 75:Hotel internet service is stupidly arcane and is charged for. Annoying but it works really well. My wife would have appreciated a set of wash cloths but like many hotels in Europe these are not provided.

Review 76:Location is in principal plaza of town and just up the street from two beautiful villas. Hotel environs quiet at night but bustles with activity for much of the day. You can walk to every point in town in minutes. Hotel fronts on Lake Como affording great view of lake and surrounding towns including famed Bellagio which is great to visit and shop but too thronging with tourists. Stay in Ravenna! Hotel looks to be recently updated and it is noticeable. Sleep experience was entirely positive so long as you are prepared to be woken at 7:00 a.m. by church bells that seem to clang forever (they waken the whole town, I'm sure).

Review 77:The hotel is attractive, comfortable with responsive staff. It is extremely convenient for someone traveling by car. We stayed on the side with the square which could be noisy but the closed windows kept the room quiet.

Review 78:American pop music in the restaurant is incongruous with our expectations of Italy.

Review 79:The view of the Lake from the room is outstanding. The setting is relaxing, quiet and the room comfortable.

Review 80:Housekeeping is thorough but they are like bulls in a China shop at 2pm-- overturning everything. Also it was impossible to get a taxi when ourtrain came, the cab stand was empty and we waited a long time beforeanyone came (practically until the next train came in, 20-30 minuteslater). Although very close to the train station, we had very heavybags. (See this isn't even a real criticism of the hotel!)

Review 81:The chaise lounge, the bed, the toiletries and were of excellentquality. But that view. This was actually the best upgrade, largest roomthat we ever had in Europe. Spectacular. Even the updates to theirpizzeria and cafe were really nice (food was good too!). I cannotexpress enough how much we loved our stay here, we actually wished wespent more time. Junior suite was definitely worth it.

Review 82:wifi is spotty

Review 83:Clean, modern, spacious and comfortable. Great location. Beautiful view from front with old church or back with lake view. Wonderful pizza place on site with take away, where they actually hand toss the dough.

Review 84:View was wonderful. Staff was warm, friendly and very helpful. Room was lovely with great rainshower. Location on the square was perfect. Breakfast great.

Review 85:Had to pay for parking

Review 86:The location of this hotel is excellent and the facilities and services very nice. We were welcomed with a bottle of Prosecco which we enjoyed from the balcony.

Review 87:Whats not to like???

Review 88:the hotel staff was great! professional and very friendly. Manuella, Stefania, Carlo and Livio. I work at the Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman. We are trained to provide the highest level of service to our guests. I felt the same leve of service was provided to me. Thank you! I had been traveling from Rome, NICe and barcelona. I finally had a place to kick my feet up and enjoy the views. My days there went to fast so I booked for 2 more days upon my return from NICE. I met nice friends at the hotel as well. An american, named Mary, who had stayed there before and also a british family. I cant wait until my next summer vacation. I will definetly go back and will stay longer. I will recomment to friends. I already have actually! oh and I love the body wash and shampoo... Great scent! grazie mille!

Review 89:Really bad value for money. We were with a little child and were given probably the worst room in the hotel - there was heating in summer, noise from the church right outside the window, bad smell, no light... Bad service. At breakfast we, four people, were asked to either sit in the room with the breakfast buffet (no windows, next to the food) or split on two tables of two people although there were 3 free large tables in the main area. The explanation was that these tables were reserved for lunch (at 9.30am!!)! Same in the bar for drinks in the evening - had to go look for a waiter somewhere inside the restaurant 2-3 times in the same evening, there was just no one to take our order, bring the check etc.

Review 90:The terrasse/ garden is really nice and the location is overall very good.

Review 91:The room we reserved, Victoria room, was large with vasca. Very nice classical style with damasrose wall paper, Victorian furniture, terecotta tile floor. View from French window was so nice.

Review 92:The only thing that made our stay a little less than perfect was the a/c unit as it is extremely loud. Not sure what can be done unless remove but we kept our door open to avoid and weather was nice enough to do it too.

Review 93:The hotel room was simple but gorgeous and decorated in muted tones. But, after viewing several hotels with rooms that decorated with grandma's old furniture, I was happy that the Royal Victoria updated their rooms to have a stylish modern feel. The pool is also clean and fitted with nice chairs and they have a beautiful garden with contemporary furniture too. A good breakfast with hot and cold options completed our stay!

Review 94:Having to leave!!

Review 95:The staff were very friendly and the hotel was excellently placed, with great convenience to the train/ferry's to experience the various towns of Lake Como/day trip to Milan. Varenna was a perfect place to return to after the bustle of the other cities. Would recommend to any couple looking for a romantic getaway.

Review 96:We were very lucky with the weather but if we had had rain there is nowhere for guests to sit and relax apart from the reception area or our room

Review 97:The rooms were large with excellent en suite - a superb powerful shower, and considering our room was just opposite the church with its bells tolling up to 60 times (???) for some strange reason, the shutters and windows were very soundproof. Very friendly staff

Review 98:Bit noisy in the morning - we could hear noise from the kitchen in our room.

Review 99:Excellent views from our balacony, great location in main square of Varenna. Lots of choice at breakdfast.

Review 100:At check-in we were greeted by an extremely nasty female member of the hotel staff. She insisted on my taking a second room for my daughter and said that it was not possible to have an additional adult stay in the room for a fee. Seeing that I was quite upset with the treatment, my daughter and her uncle who was also staying at the hotel, went down to the front desk with her laptop and showed the manager that the website clearly stated the option for a third adult to stay in the room for a fee. The manager responded by offering her a discount on the second room. I was very proud of my daughter taking the initiative to resolve the issue, however I have all intentions of disputing any charges that would be above and beyond the regular room charge with a third person.

Review 101:The location was great, the hotel appears to have been recently renovated and the majority of the staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 102:I don't think I've ever met such unfriendly reception staff. One of them actually rolled her eyes when we asked for help. It was enough to put me off ever going back despite the hotel's good points.

Review 103:Great hotel. Great location. Lovely room, which was immaculately clean and well-appointed. Attentive and friendly restaurant and house-keeping staff.

Review 104:Poor internet quality and difficulty continually logging in. No kettle able to be provided for the room despite my requesting in advance- other italian hotels did this.

Review 105:Location fantastic - views of lake superb and great to walk out onto the piazza. Staff very friendly and helpful

Review 106:Queen bed was two twin beds pushed together so there was a gap in the middle.

Review 107:Lake view room with large bathroom with shower large enough for two and two sinks. Nice view of the lake at breakfast. Convenient location.

Review 108:Breakfast could have supplied fresher fruit- it appeared that they kept refrigerating the fruit and putting it out for breakfast- bananas were brown- plums and grapes were tasteless. Eggs and bread was good.

Review 109:We had a 1st floor lake view room with a juliett balcony(all the other lake view rooms were occupied and this was all they had left for upgrade). Clean room- great view- right at the main square close to everything. Front desk was ready to help with anything you need. Also good resteraunt at hotel grill- great gelato and pizza!

Review 110:Very poor wi-fi - too slow when it was available and frequently dropped out. Would not provide iron and ironing board to guests. Lack of tea making facilities in rooms.

Review 111:Lovely hotel on the water in a picturesque village. Good staff. Nicely renovated rooms Reasonable breakfast

Review 112:We had to leave after a six day stay.

Review 113:There HOTEL has a old world charm with modern amenities, very clean rooms amd comfortable bed. Magic position overlooking the lake, warm and friendly staff, great breakfast and the al-a-carte dining was excellent with good choices each evening, also had dinner in the grill restaurant and enjoyed the meal also. Verenna is a lovely place to stay on the Lake Como, easy to get to all the other places of interest on the lake by ferry. Highly recommend the hotel and its location.

Review 114:The staff at the desk was at times unfriendly and the room was adequate but sparse, and lacking in real comfort.

Review 115:The Royal Victoria is in an ideal spot directly on the lake in Varenna, easily the most charming town in the region. The lake view rooms offer breathtaking views.

Review 116:It's pricey, but places on Como generally are - worth the money.

Review 117:location. Beautiful rooms. Amazing view. Lovely, lovely staff who could not be more helpful. Nice restaurant, great breakfast included and also a lovely place to eat in the evening.

Review 118:The dining room is excellent but is seriously let down by the standard of the food. Who ever heard of an Italian cook who made very poor pasta!

Review 119:An excellent hotel in a great location with very good staff

Review 120:We had some difficulty with the A/C, but once we reported the problem it was addressed and fixed immediately.

Review 121:The wait staff for our evening dinner and breakfast the next morning we're terrific! The rain head shower, towels, amenities in the bath were of excellent quality. The view with the balcony, delightful! Great location right in the heart of Varenna, an easy walk from the train station.

Review 122:-

Review 123:Perfect location, adorable staff

Review 124:Coffee Room rate is too high

Review 125:it was a bit spendy

Review 126:Beautiful hotel. Very nice facilities. Comfortable bed. The breakfast buffet was tasty and provided a good selection.

Review 127:Hotel bar not open around midnight on a Saturday night.

Review 128:Location, Room, our lake view, pool, staff, breakfast

Review 129:We had a junior suite and the room and the view were lovely. Varenna was a dream. We loved the gardens in the nearby villas and the nearby walks.

Review 130:Wonderful breakfast! Great location the gardens etc were beautiful!

Review 131:Front desk staff wasn't friendly. Not a good value for your money. Beware of daily Parking Fee.

Review 132:Good location and view of the lake

Review 133:The balcony room overlooked Lake Como and it was truly an amazing view. The staff gave excellent service, and we enjoyed every moment of our stay.
