Reviews for Pousada Mosteiro de Guimaraes

Review 1:Surely this must be one of the most beautiful hotels in Europe. The atmosphere in this monestary is incredible. It's like sleeping in a famous museum. The rooms are tasteful and comfortable, but it's the hallways and cloisters that make a night in this pousada truly memorable.

Review 2:The hotel is located on a hill - not easy to get it you are not on a car. Many people at breakfast time - you have to wait coffee which is served by the staff.

Review 3:Beautiful building. Comfortable rooms.

Review 4:The reception staff were helpful, but appeared to have limited local knowledge -even gave the wrong time for a choir practice in the church attached to the pousada. So missed it!

Review 5:I loved that it was unique and I felt like I was staying in a palace. Quite a different experience.

Review 6:Night shift personnel seems to be a bit incompetent; the rooms are small; bathroom in the room looks like we live in the 80's.

Review 7:The views, old character of the monastery, the garden, good food in the restaurant.

Review 8:Weliked everything, but haven't dined in the restaurant.

Review 9:This is one of the most unique locations we've ever s,topped at. You can spend a whole day exploring the premisis.

Review 10:Evening meal rushed and not quite as good as we expected. A bit tricky to find as signs from city centre are easy to misinterpret.

Review 11:Stunning interior. Excellent reception staff. Lovely view over the city. Comfortable room.

Review 12:On arrival at approximately 6.30 pm having been lost in narrow, cobblestoned, steep, streets for an hour due to the pousada being sign posted under a different name we were told the restaurant was "complete". This was very disappointing as we came here to enjoy the whole pousada experience. We asked to be advised if during the evening a booking became available. This did not happen in spite of a two thirds full restaurant

Review 13:The view and rooms

Review 14:Ignore the lumpy bed,the single electrical outlet and small room, staying at this pousada is a wonderful experience.Amazing ambience, magical garden and great food.I give it a ten but your system rates it lower.

Review 15:Not sure if Booking.com made a mistake, but there was no couch in theroom as advertised. Went to the reception and they gave me a story thatthey do not have any rooms with a couch?!

Review 16:Great place to stay and relax. Excellent pool

Review 17:Not enough activity, felt empty. Should attract more people and have activities going on at different times: chamber music, recitals, talks about the monastery history, etc.

Review 18:Historical building, beautiful rooms throughout.

Review 19:All wonderful. 10/15 min walk downhill through less attractive parts if Guimarães to reach old centre. Longer walk back but not the fault of the pousada! Directions from a7 south take you through v narrow roads and pousada was hard to find

Review 20:The whole experience. The history of the pousada, lovely bedrooms and common areas and fine dining

Review 21:We had dinner on the second night and I think I should have made the effort to go into town. The food wasn't bad but overpriced.

Review 22:Service, location and breakfast were great highlights

Review 23:The hotel was unable to offer dinner to us when we arrived after a very demanding journey. Signs to the hotel in the town were very scarce and also it was not know by locals!!

Review 24:the ambiance, grounds and peacefulness of the cool interior. Delicious food too. We certainly will be returning in the near future. A most relaxing stay with many happy memories.

Review 25:Furnishings were dated. Our room had a roll-away bed in it and we asked to have it removed and replaced with a second chair. They brought the chair immediately but couldn't take away the bed. It's a tough climb back from the city. A shuttle would have been nice like they had in Porto. The bar menu was VERY limited...two sandwiches. We don't like to eat in the dining room every night. Porto had a great bar/pool menu.

Review 26:The grounds, the size of our room, the dining room and the pool. Customer service was excellent. The food was very good.

Review 27:Food in the restaurant was very average.

Review 28:Once we found the pousada we loved it. Booking.com should include the name Pousada de Santa Marinha on booking confirmation. The reception staff were delightful. Food very average. Gardens and grounds are gorgeous. A real peaceful haven. Our room was huge with big bathroom.

Review 29:The rooms and bathrooms were basic.

Review 30:This was one of three Pousadas we stayed at in Portugal. The room's were dated and the interior room corridors felt a bit like a convention hotel but the grounds and main building facilities were beautiful and full of charm. We really enjoyed walking through the gardens and having a drink out on the patio looking up to the hills.

Review 31:There was no airco in the room. Therefore it was too warm to be able to sleep well.

Review 32:Beautiful historical building. Great swimming pool (still cold at the moment, but we enjoyed it). Delicious breakfast!

Review 33:No objections at all.

Review 34:Excellent location on the hill overlooking Guimaraes, very helpful and accommodating staff; beautiful grounds and well and tastefully looked-after historic building. The free Wifi worked fine, even good enough for streaming. Incredibly pleasant stay.

Review 35:This Pousada is simply a wonderful place. One has the impression to stay in a museum. Everything is beautiful. The garden is an experience on itself and the staff are super friendly. The best place we have ever stayed in Portugal.

Review 36:Nothing negative at all. Everything was absolutely fine.

Review 37:Wonderful building with large historic halls located on a hill just outside the city centre. Beautiful view of the town from the pousada and also from the swimming pool. A very clean pousada and very good service and breakfast. Nice park belonging to the pousada.

Review 38:Waiters in the hotel restaurant a bit condescending and could learn from reception staff

Review 39:Friendly and helpful staff Lovely location, found a really nice restaurant just down the hill, which we did not spot until our last day as they only open in the evenings.

Review 40:large echoing corridors - some disturbance from large group with children in adjoining rooms, who used the corridor as a communal area, and would have been better placed together in a small corridor away from other guests.

Review 41:The interesting building, the comfort, the friendly staff, the food, the surrounding area

Review 42:Breakfast was a little uninspired - juices from concentrates, poor selection of cereals, scrambled eggs and bacon not restocked. WiFi signal reaches the rooms but was impossible to connect to - probably just needed to be reset but nobody knew how to do it.

Review 43:Wonderfully restored 12th century monastery. Classy and tasteful throughout. Bedrooms are converted monks quarters so are not too large but very comfortable and well appointed. Apart from the beauty of the building, the gardens are absolutely fantastic. Staff are very helpful and friendly.

Review 44:The rooms need power-points on each side of the bed, not one on the far side of the large room.

Review 45:Incredibly elegant hotel with palatial lounges, stunning historic features and magnificent gardens. You feel like you are walking through a stately home, beautifully restored. The breakfast choice was good and the staff friendly and helpful. Nothing stuffy at all.

Review 46:We arrived end of day, about 6 PM as we were touring all day. We had booked our room 8 months in advance. We were told when we arrived and wanted to book for dinner that the dining room was full and there is nothing else around. We had looked forward to a meal and not having to drive as the Pousada is a little difficult to find - we had a GPS and were very happy of course. We were told that maybe by 8:30 there would be space - so we waited... Then it was clear that there would be no food for us and there was no offer for anything. It was the amazing waiter in the bar who offered us soup and a beef sandwich along with our wine and then suggested my husband get some dessert at the buffet. At least the waiter was considerate. Others did not seem to care. Surely, with a full house, there should be plans for meals..Too bad as it would have been a perfect stay like all other hotels we stayed in while visiting Portugal for 35 days.

Review 47:The buildings are lovely and we stayed in the main older section. Our room was far to get to but the walk through was lovely as the building and halls are gorgeous. The room is small and quaint. It is more expensive than some in the country but the buildings around and the views are breathtaking. .Breakfast was excellent and nothing was missing. The gardens are lovely and worth a visit too. Nicole & Nick Canada

Review 48:The food in the restaurant was traditional but not as special as the pousada gives the impression....except for the impeccable and friendly waiters and delicious desserts - like everywhere in Portugal

Review 49:The historic but comfortable atmosphere, the extraordinary friendly and srrvice minded staff, the beautiful position with the view over the city, the fairytale like gardens

Review 50:Nothing!

Review 51:Diego and Antonio were awesome! They went out of their way to help usand make sure that we were comfortable. Hugo in the bar was also veryhelpful and provided great service! Do yourself a favor and explore thisamazing hotel. It is absolutely beautiful and "takes you back intime"!

Review 52:Standard room very small 520. Bathroom needed updating. Disappointing when the rest if the building was so lovely.

Review 53:Fabulous building - lovely lounge, dining room super. Pool area great and gardens very enjoyable.

Review 54:The hotel was not easy to find, the way to get to the hotel was poorly indicated

Review 55:Beautiful room and very Nice restaurant, bar and breakfastroom Friendly and polite staff Good food and service

Review 56:Old monastery in a fabulous location a little bit outside of town. High quality of food and wine, notably the bar tender Eduardo was very attentive and helpful. In general staff was very supportive.

Review 57:- breakfast choice is dull (instant coffee, limited choice of cheese etc.) in a chilly environment. Lots of room for improvement here to make breakfast an experience. - be ready to walk 20 minutes to town (and take a taxi on the way home)

Review 58:- location and the beautiful garden. Very quiet location - room was clean and included all you require for this class of hotel - good for one night, would not extend the stay

Review 59:Restaurant is nothing special. Better find something in town. We've been also the only persons below 70yo in this hotel.

Review 60:Good choice if you want to experience something different - to dive in historical ambiance, feel the spirit of old Portuguese capital or just enjoy the fairy tale, interiors are impressive, the monastery as well.

Review 61:Our room (111) was located in the more modern wing; although the roomwas clean and comfortable, we didnt feel that it had the character orwas in harmony with the old monastery and the rest of the building. We dined in the restaurant in the evening -we found it to be a rather dreary place with very creaky chairs. The restaurant menu was quite extensive - but also expensive. Euro 19.00 for 2 chicken drumsticks and rice with a watery sauce isn't good value and it certainly wasn't a memorable dish.

Review 62:The Pousada is located in a really great location above the town and isa beautiful old monastery building with history dating back to the 12thcentury (and with several rebuilds). The day prior to arrival the Pousada emailed us some information on the Hotel, together with some city information and a map, including the GPS street address for our Sat Nav. Very helpful and a nice touch. The extensive gardens are really nice to wander around and there are numerous areas to sit and relax, including a courtyard adjacent to the bar. There are many rooms within the monastery that can also be explored. All in all a very nice place to stay although we were a little disappointed with the restaurant.

Review 63:Horrible re-constituted coffee and milk at breakfast from the Nescafe machine. Why fake coffee in a wonderful old place?

Review 64:This historic pousada overlooking Guimaraes, the birthplace of Portugal, is a must stay for those in love with history, architecture, and gardens. Ask for a room on the uppermost floor, in the renovated monks cells, your choice of quiet garden views or panoramic valley views over the city. Make sure you make it all the way up to the top of the gardens to discover the mossey pool, and explore the grand rooms, cloisters, terrace, and logia. The church is run separately by the village, so is not always open. Great value.

Review 65:Most of the rooms are in a side wing and of poor standard and Lack airing. Park could be fantastic but most of it is abandoned and unkept. Sorrounding area is a slum.

Review 66:Beautiful and well restored. Very good restaurant for traditional Portuguese food with a discrete modern touch. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 67:was given a room in the 'new' part of the building, which in fact was built in 1980s and had very bleak design. the whole point of staying in a monastery is to experience the historic 15th century building, instead I got a feeling of a very plain 3 star hotel... The breakfast was not good at all, terrible coffee!

Review 68:the building itself, beautiful old common rooms and the grounds

Review 69:Noise on the ouiside, air conditioning?

Review 70:THe Histoy bihind the building. The building is astonishing! The staff very very nice. The room is very clean. Breakfast with fresh and very good fruits. Nice cakes. Very good bread.

Review 71:Location, on top of a fairly steep hill and in not the most attractive area...not such a big problem if you drive down into the town. SATNAV doesn't really work for the address given. The hotel is aware of this, as apparently nearly everybody gets lost. Now is it just me...why don't they make mention of this on their website and spare their guests the inconvenience instead of just, "yes, everbody tells us this".... Room not very big, which we didn't mind to much, it was just so dark and gloomy. You wouldn't want to spend much time in there. A massive wardrobe is used to divide the room up a bit but it makes you feel quite claustrophobic.

Review 72:A beautiful building with lovely gardens. Lovely breakfast, something for everybody incl. bacon and very delicious scrambled eggs!

Review 73:Approach amazing, long drive of ancient trees to what resembled a Cathedral with wonderful gardens.Restaurant an event if a little expensive. walks in surrounding area wonderful. A great experience. Local town quaint with friendly people.

Review 74:The area leading to the bed rooms is very dark, made worse by the brown decor.

Review 75:Dining was superb over the festive period. Spacious bed room.

Review 76:Room service options.

Review 77:Gorgeous gardens. Lovely accommodation. Excellent food. Great relaxing place to unwind and enjoy Portugal's history.

Review 78:The food in the restaurant and inability to get a morning coffee in the lounge

Review 79:The building and its location

Review 80:We had a wonderful time. The staff were very talkative and helpful. They directed us to places to eat that they liked and were new and exciting.

Review 81:Handling the luggage was very difficult due to non convenient entrance.

Review 82:Special hotel, atmosphere and surroundings

Review 83:la situation la restauration

Review 84:A fabulous building in wonderful parkland in an interesting city. Very comfortable, especially spacious and excellent food.

Review 85:The fantastic location and the smile of the staff. The staff is very professional and kind

Review 86:Impressive gardens

Review 87:Best Pousada/Parador we have stayed in.

Review 88:The location is not as close to the city as I had hoped. The room was undistinguished.

Review 89:The facade of the building and the cloister are lovely.

Review 90:nothing

Review 91:everything was perfect

Review 92:The fish soup

Review 93:What a sensational place. Like stepping back in time and living in a palace.

Review 94:The Convent building, the decoration and furniture, the gardens, and the view of the region from the terrace.

Review 95:The lounge in the afternoon was full of people dozing -- surely that is what bedrooms are for! This was very off-putting.

Review 96:A little far from the town centre.

Review 97:The building itself is amazing.

Review 98:The rooms are not as wonderful as the building itself. Luxury they are not.

Review 99:The absolute magnificence of the building, the azulejos, the atmosphere.

Review 100:Nothing

Review 101:Lovely room in old part of monastery overlooking gardens. Lovely medieval town.

Review 102:peaceful surroundings, historic buildings and excellent staff

Review 103:Slow internet

Review 104:Building Interiors Room Gardens

Review 105:Dinner menu is typical Portugese - which is not to everyone's taste.

Review 106:Spacious public rooms and the gardens

Review 107:Restaurant staff only moderately interested. Wi-Fi in our room intermittent for mini iPad.

Review 108:Fabulous interior. Interesting gardens. Food fine.

Review 109:Very nice room, excellent service. Good locatin

Review 110:historical character of the biolding

Review 111:Liked it all.

Review 112:Great location, friendly staff, excellent restaurant, nice pool and gardens

Review 113:New wing has a damp problem. The air in the room smelt terrible.

Review 114:Location. Old part of the hotel

Review 115:remote from the town (long distance by foot)

Review 116:Nice place and good service. Correctly priced

Review 117:The interior was sad and depressing. The food in the restaurant was not good.

Review 118:I liked the building and the placement of the hotel.

Review 119:a fair walk from the center of town but therefore great views of Guimaraes. restaurant is pricey

Review 120:beautiful hotel, beautiful pool

Review 121:Every thing was great the staff were very helpfull

Review 122:To be able to stay at accommodation that offers so much history is a bonus. We have no negative comments.

Review 123:Room (on ground floor) was very musty smelling, not good if you have allergies The food was good but way overpriced considering what you could get elsewhere

Review 124:beautiful location in a historic building

Review 125:Not near the town center, however, its lovely setting overlooking the town is part of the property's charm.

Review 126:The monastery is beautiful well decorated in it's original style, however, functional and comfortable. The gardens and grounds are extensive and good for a walk around.
