Reviews for Casa Melo Alvim

Review 1:We should have stayed two nights! Great spot right near the train station in this sweet town. Lots of wonderful shops with Portugeuse embroidery, jewelry and a wonderful Costume Museum. A fantastic church or two and great strolls along the the water. Never made it yo the castle!! Our hotel room was gorgeous and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 2:The bed mattress was hard perhaps it's me because I'm use too sleeping on a softer mattress

Review 3:Yes the hotel is fantastic ! And the staff were polite ready to help in any way ?But found a very pleasing stay I would strongly recommend this hotel oh by the way the breakfast also was the best I have had from a 4 star hotel ! And so I will be staying at this hotel in the near future......

Review 4:It was a bit tough to find especially during rush hour.

Review 5:We relied on Booking.com reviews from travelers for our first night in Portugal. A short drive from the Porto airport brought us to this very nice hotel. The staff was cordial, helpful with suggestions for places to see and places for dinner. The hotel is centrally located. We walked up to the cathedral for a great workout, shopped at the mall across the tracks. Breakfast at the hotel was well worth it.

Review 6:The bar and lounge area isn't staffed. Except at breakfast, there doesn't seem to be a way to get a drink, a coffee or tea, or a snack.

Review 7:The hotel is beautiful and has a convenient location. The staff is friendly and helpful, but there were a couple of occasions when it was difficult to locate a staff member.

Review 8:Our room was a bit cold in spite of having the heat full blast. But it was solved with a portable heater. Fantastic and friendly people making sure you were comfortable and happy!!!

Review 9:We truly enjoyed our stay. Breakfast was superb. Location excellent.

Review 10:Limited parking for reference to others, make sure you get there early.

Review 11:Everything, the hotel was beautifully restored and the rooms wonderful in comfort an style. The staff very attentive and helpful from arrival with helpful advice and recommendations, for attractions and restaurants. We can highly recommend the restaurant in the centre, family run, exceptional service and wonderful food, O Laranjeira ask at reception, also for other places.

Review 12:The first room they gave us was noisy - what I think was an air-conditioner in the next room kept me awake for some time.

Review 13:The second room we were in. And the sense of history of the hotel as a whole.

Review 14:Parking may be limited

Review 15:Lovely building, staff let us park motorbikes securely, nice rooms, nice public areas, right by the old town and 5 min walk from harbour and funicular

Review 16:Stunning historic hotel, which was built in the early 1500's. While this hotel is very old, the decor is stunning, white walls, exposed stone, wide floor boards and every modern comfort imaginable. The gardens and the cloisters provide a calmness and beauty not found many places in the world. The staff are of the quality to match the surroundings.

Review 17:The alarm for the post office on the next street went off a couple of nights during our stay. Once we figured out where it was coming from the staff contacted the staff and it was sorted.

Review 18:Peaceful comfortable surroundings. Very helpful staff. This place oozes quality.

Review 19:Coffee at breakfast was not very good. The value for money is corresponding to the country standard.

Review 20:Staff was helpful and gave great restaurant recommendation. Wifi was easily accessible and fast. Free parking close by.

Review 21:We had an extended stay of more than a week. While the breakfast was good, we wished there were some variety in the cooked items and the selection in general from day to day. The room wasn't cleaned sometimes until late in the afternoon/dinner time. Wish they had coffee making facility in the rooms.

Review 22:The staff was very helpful and attentive, and friendly.

Review 23:Our room overlooked the train station and you could once or twice a day hear the trains leaving if your window was open, but we had a great view of the basilica de Sta. Lucia. The bar does not really work as it is not permanently staffed, it was always empty during our stay.

Review 24:Very calm and the building has a lovely architecture inside. Parking was not simple, but the staff would make a place available even if the reserved area was occupied and it is free of charge. It is not in the center of the touristic area, but it is a very short distance away walking.

Review 25:Nothing at all!!

Review 26:Great place to stay in an renovated historic residence that has everything needed. Nicely decorated room close to the train station and easy walking distance of everything in the old town. This hotel has all required for travellers. Quiet, clean, good amenities including free wifi and great breakfast. Staff are freindly and helpful and provided good advice on local restaurants

Review 27:The piano bar is not used and there was never anyone in attendance. Our bed was made and bathroom tidied daily but after four days we had to ask for the room to be dusted as it had never been done. Also the staff could have informed us more about the facilities - we did not know until the last day that there was a games room and the free bikes were never mentioned.

Review 28:Very good location opposite railway station with everything close at hand within walking distance. Hotel is a beautiful building with lovely furnishings.

Review 29:Four poster bed was rather hard and creaky. There was only limited roadside parking in front of hotel and there was a fair amount of traffic noise.

Review 30:We had a large and light room at the front of the hotel with a large and well equipped bathroom. Good breakfast.

Review 31:A small bit of creaking in the beautiful wooden floors

Review 32:Incredible historic building, beautifully renovated and fitted for comfort. GREAT staff at front desk....helpful, listened to my concerns, offered me choice of two great rooms; were helpful in every way to a tired, cranky old lady (me) :)

Review 33:Our room was right on a very noisy street. The tub drain didn't work well.

Review 34:Lots of room and huge bed. Internet worked very well. Convenient location, next to the train station. Breakfast was excellent.

Review 35:Our room overlooked the station and at times we were aware that Viana do Castela is a busy working town

Review 36:The quality of the restoration of this old villa was outstanding and its quiet and dignified atmosphere perfect

Review 37:Viana is a very beautiful small city, and from the hotel you just cross the street and you are in the middle of the town. The House is an old town palace, the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Staff was friendly, Breakfast good, everything perfect! The recommendation of Restraurants was helpful, and the recommended Restaturant was very good.

Review 38:Well located on the edge of old town with good parking and close to railway station. The old mansion is beautifully renovated and has an old world feel but very modern. A short walk to the river front.

Review 39:Viana do Castelo does not worth a visit, but this hotel is best for a nice stop over during a road trip in the north of Portugal

Review 40:the historical premise and its renovation, the staff

Review 41:NOTHING

Review 42:WARM WELCOME. DELIGHTFUL OLD HOTEL 500 YEARS OLD. BEDROOM SPACEFUL. BATHROOM SMALL . BED COMFORTABLE. BREAKFAST HAD GREAT SELECTION. BUFFET STYLE. WE WILL RETURN AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

Review 43:Only that the bed was a bit too firm for me.

Review 44:The hotel is a very stylish, modern rebuild of an old mansion, elegantly decorated with interesting photos on the walls. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is very good. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and very quiet even though the hotel is right opposite the train station. Perfect location for visiting Viana do Castelo, and easy car parking. The wifi was excellent.

Review 45:We loved this old building and all the features it retained. The rooms were quaint and charming. Breakfast was sensational and the staff spoke wonderful English and were super helpful. The position is great. Right next to the train, shopping, restuarants, and the local sights.

Review 46:Gloomy room lighting which initially hid the dirt, not nice! The place seemed to be understaffed. For example, breakfast was served by a very pleasant and helpful young woman who was doubling as the hotel receptionist and therefore disappeared at times. Mouldy prunes at breakfast.

Review 47:Good location, decent sized room. Helpful receptionist who gave us 2 good recommendations for restaurants. Friendly and pleasant waitress at breakfast. Nice old building.

Review 48:unfortunately we had the air conditioning unit for the hotel outside our window so on and off through night.

Review 49:beautiful historic building in the centre of the town . walkable to bars cafes and restaurants. well furnished room with touch of class. Good breakfast

Review 50:Would have been nice if there was a restaurant which would be excellent in the setting.

Review 51:Location. Character of the building and its restoration. Service. Breakfast.

Review 52:No tea making facilities!

Review 53:We had a gorgeous room with separate living area. Fantastic position just a short stroll to the shops and restaurants. Would definitely return again!

Review 54:The hotel was very very nice in all respects, but we found Vianna itself touristy and not that friendly. However, there are a few things to see and do and there is a huge shopping centre next to the station,

Review 55:The hotel is in a great location, right next to the train station. The staff were so friendly and helpful, we left 6 items of clothes in the wardrobe and when we realised in Porto later that day, they sent them express delivery straight to our hotel free of charge. Excellent service and so considerate. We would definitely return.

Review 56:Great staff- very accomodating

Review 57:Location was excellent, helpful front desk staff. The breakfast was very good, nice choice, delicious

Review 58:It wasn't bad as such. We just like beds to be a bit softer.

Review 59:Very helpful friendly staff. Lots of lounge and seating areas. Beautiful historic building in central location.

Review 60:None.

Review 61:Building of character. Good breakfast choice.

Review 62:Beds too firm, no coffee/ tea facilities in room.

Review 63:Location, historical hotel, helpful staff.

Review 64:Bathroom and deco are a bit dated. A bit dear too.

Review 65:Location is excellent and it is a charming old building

Review 66:Wonderful uprated room ,decor ,staff, location, dining experience.

Review 67:Hard mattress

Review 68:Location

Review 69:-- Good location -- Lovely decor in 15th C building -- Helpful staff

Review 70:Beautiful old hotel with athmosphere in midst of the city and parking awailable outside.

Review 71:We didn't like the mini fridge noise.

Review 72:Architecturally delightful. Attractive room. Good breakfast. Cheerful staff. Good location.

Review 73:Shower faulty, air conditioning not effective.

Review 74:Location, style of property, breakfast.

Review 75:Nothing

Review 76:Perfect location in a beautiful building. Amazing staff!

Review 77:Lack of bar and evening meal. Wifi was intermittent.

Review 78:Convenience for Viana itself

Review 79:The atmospher

Review 80:Nothing really.

Review 81:A really nice upscale hotel in a lovely old building conveniently situated to the railway station. Note; railway noise wasn't an issue. The room was gorgeous, the staff were helpful and the breakfast was very good. We liked the town a lot.

Review 82:No wifi at all. That was a major point when booking and then did not work. Not good The Bar could be more functionable. We went out but could have stayed in

Review 83:Parking, staff, premises. Fix wifi and make the Bar a working Bar and the rest is perfect

Review 84:Some semi private parking is available, but it isn't really suitable for motorcycles. Took my chances on the street just outside the main entrance.

Review 85:Lovely building sensitively restored in contempory style. Easy to find and close to the centre.

Review 86:Some noise from near by train station. Closing the window is a good solution but Air conditioning was not available when we stayed there

Review 87:Old renovated building very unique. Located at the best place in town!!! Staff is very cooperative good breakfast

Review 88:The staff were exceptionally knowledgeable, welcoming, helpful and made every effort to make our stay relaxing and interesting. The general environment of the hotel is beautiful.

Review 89:We spent the weekend at Melo Alvim which is a quite charming place to stay. The staff was very helpful and attentive all the time. Knowing that it a very good hotel sometimes doesn’t quite say it all, so I will tell you about those small things that make all the matter in felling welcomed. On the last day we had to leave quite early in the morning, we then made the check-out the night before and, next morning, they prepare us a delicious warm earlier breakfast. In the rush to depart, our 3 year old forgot his teddy bear in the room. Next day, before we even noticed it, I was receiving a phone call about their finding. The teddy bear was return by post in 2 days with no extra cost.

Review 90:nothing

Review 91:very warm welcome no problem parking and booking in early. the room was near the lift this´ was very helpful as my wife is disabled. good size room for a five hundred year old house. we will stay here again.

Review 92:No safe for valuables. Room was not properly cleaned but after bringing this to front desks attention it was resolved, Disappointing for a hotel of this stature. Street in front of hotel very noisy.

Review 93:Room was spacious and beautiful. Breakfast was delectable, lovely cakes and pastries.

Review 94:Staff very friendly. Great breakfast, had to choose what to eat as there were many choices. Nice beds. Eco awareness, 5 leaves award. Great location in a great city.

Review 95:Nothing in fact, but just some details like not having some bathrooms niceties, such as a comb (we forgot to take one with us) or a choice of pillows.

Review 96:I liked the building, which is well restored and maintained.

Review 97:The location is great, at the top of the main plaza so close to shops, cafes, banks etc. The hotel building itself is beautiful and the staff very helpful and friendly. Free car parking and WiFI. Lovely!!

Review 98:Excellent location for walking round this delightful old town, strolling past/fishermen's cottages, restaurants, cafes Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Large and comfortable beds. This formerly private home has been beautifully renovated. Lovely public rooms, dining room light and airy and good breakfasts. Pretty, enclosed and peaceful terrace; Good free parking. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable experience

Review 99:The room was HUGE (bigger than my living room at home), and beautifully furnished. Superb central location but nevertheless very quiet, with double glazing and heavy shutters over the windows.

Review 100:Great location especially if arriving by train. Beautifully appointed and the staff were welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was superb. Good WiFi facility

Review 101:It was very warm in the room and the airco did not provide sufficient cooling.

Review 102:Very friendly staff. We even got a wine cooler brought to our room for our own bought bottle of vinho verde. Good breakfast Nice location close to historical centre, train station and restaurants. Free parking close to the hotel.

Review 103:All is ok

Review 104:Nice hotel in 15 century palace in the heart of the town. Rooms with all needed comfort, friendly people, free parking at the railway station behind the hotel. At walking distance to all points of interest in this town.

Review 105:I know it was built in 1509, and that it respected the structure, but it was depressingly claustrophobic and noisy.

Review 106:Great old building. Very good staff.

Review 107:everything perfect

Review 108:excellent and friendly staff, very good breakfasts, convenient and free parking, design absolutely unique, the city itself very interesting and beautiful

Review 109:Staff was super friendly and helpful, and, in contrast to other places of similar standards, not fuzzy. Highly reommended. Interior design with books and art very pretty.

Review 110:Well situated; old stone house tastefully redesigned as a hotel maintaining an excellent balance of traditional and contemporary styles. Small and friendly; helpful staff; excellent breakfast; comfortable spacious rooms.

Review 111:The only negative thing I can say about the comfort were the pillows. I found them very uncomfortable.

Review 112:The room was large and beautifully decorated with antique furniture. (The old-look feeling)We had a problem with tiny bugs in our bed when we returned to our room after dinner. The concierge offered us another room immediately. It was a suite and probably more expensive than original room, but in my opinion not as nice. restaurant is situated in the center of town, within a minute of the train station and a large shopping mall. We had a rental car and hotel offered free parking very close-by (to the right of the train station). It was very convenient. There are lots of restaurants within walking distance. We visited the hospital boat, now a museum on the water. Very interesting.

Review 113:Casa Melo Alvim is a restored 16th century manor and is interesting, very comfortable, and a lovely place to relax. It is a short walk from the old center and from the river where there are many restaurants near the river front. Enjoy a slow walk.

Review 114:It was conveniently situated for the railway station, centre of town and shopping centre. Rooms were very comfortable and breakfast was excellent - lots of choice, constantly replenished.

Review 115:Comfortable room and good facilities with architectural character Town location with layby and nearby parking, fronting high street and within 100m of station but not noisey B+B with good breakfast selection, gluten free on pre request Lift for upper floor access but steps at front door and dining room not sure of alternative access Helpful staff with good english No pool but only short drive to beaches, within walking distance Good location plenty of local restaurants including shopping mall with good fast food with suprising selection

Review 116:Room ( suite) was excellent Staff were very helpful. Location good, could walk everywhere (next to bus and rail station ) Breakfast was excellent

Review 117:Lack of good coffee for breakfast - espresso or espresso-based, they only serve some instant coffee in a thermo jar. In such country as Portugal, where excellent coffee can be found everywhere, and in a **** hotel this must be a standard.

Review 118:The hotel is located in a historic manor, beautifully renovated. The location is excellent, walking distance to all attractions in Viana. Nice decor, welcoming staff. No problems with parking - they have their own small parking near the railway station, 50 m away - this is not mentioned on this site. I am not sure why, but judging by previous reviews on booking.com, the hotel is popular mainly with "mature couples", and it turned out to be the truth. We liked that the hotel is very quiet and relaxing.

Review 119:The coffee at breakfast was terrible. It tasted like cheap instant, madeup and kept warm in a thermos jug. Almost every cafe and bar in Portugalserves lovely coffee so why do 4 star hotels serve this rubbish?

Review 120:I was very lucky with my room as I had booked a de luxe room but we weregiven a suite, which was very generously sized. The staff were all veryhelpful and friendly. The location was excellent and the parking handy.Good breakfast with freshly squeezed oj. This shouldn't be unusual inPortugal but sadly it is. The hotel is an old building which has beensensitively converted.

Review 121:The staff were very helpful and friendly. The hotel itself is very spacious, clean and calm. The bedroom and the en-suite bathroom were well equipped and roomy. The overall style reminded us of a smaller version of a Spanish Parador Hotel: traditional, solid and reliable.

The Fine Print
