Reviews for Pousada de Viana do Castelo

Review 1:Everything was perfect and astonishing but the most beautiful, stunning impression was given by the view over the church, the illuminated city on the river and the sea. Excellent dinner and breakfast. Waiters were very professional and friendly. One of the most beautiful experiences i ever had. Unfortunately too short!

Review 2:Breakfasts weren't the quality I would expect from a pousada. The restaurant was overpriced and not always up to standard.

Review 3:Very helpful friendly staff. Wonderful views.Viana itself charming ang plenty to see and do. Pool looked fabulous. Old world grandeur. Son loved pool table when the weather was foggy.

Review 4:Dinner, they forgot it in the kitchen then tried to serve us dried up pasta and rock hard pork.

Review 5:The view was spectacular. Sitting in the terrace with a glass of wine.

Review 6:Air con could have worked better

Review 7:Unbelievable location and views . A bit out of town so you need a car or taxi . Staff very friendly and helpful with dinner recommendations.

Review 8:The common areas are not very cosy. Not realy due to the furniture but rather the lack of atmosphere. The bar has no wine selection by the glass....a pity for this type of hotel.

Review 9:Superb views from a grand building. A wonderful hotel on a green hill with ocean views to kill for. Good breakfast within a beautiful room with valley views. Nice swimming pool.

Review 10:There was a 4-day music festival going on in the town and the noise was unbearable so we left after only one night.

Review 11:The staff were extremely helpful and charming and the hotel had a faded old-world charm.

Review 12:in desperate need of some maintenance / renovation work (our bedroom's aircon was leaking and making strong noises) Although the food was very good the lunch and dinner menu did not change throughout the week , even for the inclusion of some daily specials. Would have liked to have seem new options.

Review 13:Great staff, beautiful place and excellent food

Review 14:I specifically requested a quiet room and we were allocated room 311 where you could very clearly hear the motor of the lift. Despite all my positive comments about this hotel this spoilt my stay and impacted on my view of the hotel.

Review 15:the location is amazing and staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 16:The view from Pousada de Viana do Castelo is out of this world and worth every penny. The building itself is beautiful and the meals are outstanding, although a bit pricey, I suppose for people travelling on a budget. I found the staff very efficient and friendly. A grand place to stay in lovely Viana do Castelo, a mere 70 Km norfth-west of Oporto!

Review 17:Beautiful building set in a fantastic elevated location over looking rolling green hills and the wild Atlantic Ocean. Luis, the attentive bar tender is a great help. Providing helpful local advice and making sure you have an enjoyable experience.

Review 18:Evening meal was poor, food was over cooked and over seasoned.restaurant staff were not very aware of needs eg when ordering food or wine and lacked leadership!!

Review 19:Nothing

Review 20:Location, location, location not to be missed. Wonderful. Great history too. Staff welcoming and helpful. Fre parking and wifi. Good choice at breakfast. Lovely terrace overlooking the church and town below. Funicular down to the town. Lovely swimming pool area.

Review 21:Service felt quite distant and formal, as has been mentioned. Quite far from the town, and unfortunately the cable car wasn't working while we were there. It's a 20-30 minute steep walk up the steps from town.

Review 22:Nice, decent sized room, and very spacious bathroom (ideally, the room itself could have been a bit bigger, and the bathroom a bit smaller). Small balcony with stunning view of the church and the coastline. Beautiful old building with lovely gardens, swimming pool, spa and tennis courts. Breakfast was quite nice. Very peaceful. The building itself and the location/view is the main reason to stay here!

Review 23:Nothing.

Review 24:Superb location. You feel special as soon as you arrive. Lovely room and sumptious public areas. Superb meal in restaurant. Breakfast is excellent with lots to chose from. On departure morning access rd was closed due to pilgrimage but pousada gave us a route to exit another way, a bit hairy but successful!

Review 25:Probably the worse coffee machine I have ever tasted.

Review 26:Location, all facilities and staff excellent. Room 308 was perfect and the views stunning. We really enjoyed our three night stay .

Review 27:The people of northern Portugal are warm and friendly in general BUT I found the staff a bit distant. They are nice and professional don't get me wrong, but to take this special place to the next level I think the service could have been elevated to a level that represents the northern Portuguese charm.

Review 28:Location is spectacular! The property is amazzzzzzing. You would pay much more for this kind of luxury elsewhere in the world.

Review 29:We had an excellent stay, nothing negative at all.

Review 30:Watch for the church on top of the mountain when you enter town. The pousada is located just behind the church an easy drive up the mountain from the city center. We had a marvelous view from our room and the public areas and also from the outdoor pool area (not open when we were there in February). Nice staff, clean modern room and very good breakfast and service.

Review 31:Food was a little overpriced. Walk down to the town and catch a taxi back if you want good food at reasonable prices

Review 32:The position is amazing with great views as we had four days of glorious weather. Staff all very pleasant

Review 33:The location absolutely Sunning. On one day we awoke to find our room floating above the cloud line magic. Staff First class . Room first class

Review 34:Bathroom not at all convenient. Small and somewhat moldy. Staff efficient but formal and it was not the friendliness we met elsewhere in portugal.

Review 35:Great location.

Review 36:Everything was great!!!

Review 37:The food was wonderful and the atmosphere was relaxing and welcoming from the start. Rooms very comfortable and the view from the room fantastic.

Review 38:The price!

Review 39:The amazing views! The friendly and professional staff, the breakfast and the size of the room. I had a little balcony on the third floor and the views were quite addictive!

Review 40:Nothing!

Review 41:Everything! From the welcome drink the friendly staff, the location and views of course are stunning. the hotel is 5* and every detail is thought of, the food is excellent, the bedroom very comfortable and spacious, the public rooms very opulent and light. If you don't have a car you would need to be quite active although there is funicular down to the town. Lovely Swimming pool too

Review 42:Bathroom dated and small, but just a small thing. Restaurant quiteexpensive, so we went downtown to eat all 3 evenings (but remember toadd the taxi fare).

Review 43:We had a lovely sea view room. The size of the room was good, not atall cramped. Friendly staff. Breakfast was okay without being overthe top. Expect to spend around 10 Euros for at taxi back from townin the evening.

Review 44:Internet connection must be re-established on every access.

Review 45:Great staff, spectacular settings and magnificent view (on mount overlooking the city). Easy access to the town even without a car. Absolutely relaxing atmosphere at all times. Great swimming pool.

Review 46:Pool some distance from the hotel and you have to cross a yard with garages to get there. Pathways a look uncared for with weeds growing through. Funicular stops at 7.45 and you are trapped on the hill unless you want to drive.

Review 47:fantastic views - the best we have ever seen. You feel like you are on top of the world. Beautiful interior in hotel and lovely bedroom. Friendly staff and good breakfast.

Review 48:Nothing really

Review 55:Magnificent views everywhere. Stylish old world charm. Friendly helpful staff. Good food and wine. Great pool.

Review 56:Cuisine rather on the heavy side

Review 57:Wonderful views

Review 58:Drinks at the hotel were quite expensive

Review 59:Fantastic views and close to the town centre. Lovely breakfast.

Review 60:The amazing view from our room balcony

Review 61:Bathroom, old and cramped, needs a remodel.

Review 62:Location and atmosphere. Gorgeous views and beautiful rooms.

Review 63:Because the hotel building was historical and old, some equipments are not newest.

Review 64:Panoramic view was marvelous.

Review 65:A bit boring place, like a place for elderly, pool too far away

Review 66:The location, the view, the comfort of the rooms

Review 67:The view was fabulous.it was like being on the top of the world. If it was not so pricie would have stayed longer

Review 68:Little a bit far from the town. But you could use cable car to go down to the town during daytime.

Review 69:View from patio in the room.

Review 70:Breakfast was a bit disappointing and the restaurant could be better.

Review 71:Staff and view.

Review 72:Lies on a hill above the Atlantic Ocean with a beatiful view

Review 73:pool was closed

Review 74:View, quietness, hotel staff

Review 75:The quality of the dinner was not in balence with the price

Review 76:We have got upgrade to a suite on the second floor

Review 77:The bed was not a queen size bed and no indoor pool

Review 78:The view Friendly staff Clean rooms Not to expensive Nice dinner

Review 79:Nothing,

Review 80:All

Review 81:The bad plumbing. The disastrously unkempt outside grounds. What a shame!

Review 82:comfort, location, uniqueness.

Review 83:No quick dining

Review 84:View!!! Relaxing atmosphere

Review 85:Food prices are too high.

Review 86:The Location

Review 87:Would have like a coffee maker

Review 88:Beautiful views, lovely food & very nice decor

Review 89:Everything. Excellent and spacious room.

Review 90:The view

Review 91:Outstanding view from room and great breakfast

Review 92:Very pricey for area. Tennis court was shabby. Dinner was not very good

Review 93:Lovely room. Fantastic setting. Nice staff

Review 94:Ausencia de uma piscina aquecida

Review 95:O conforto o café da manha

Review 96:Food in the restaurant and the staff in the restaurant were not up to the Pasada standard

Review 97:The room and location.

Review 98:The view from the room

Review 99:possibly access - funicular closed early in evening

Review 100:all great

Review 101:Long period of Fog obstruct the views

Review 102:Historical building surrounded by beautiful gardens and views of the river Lima as it empties into the sea

Review 103:Extremely beautiful location on top of a hill. Staff is very attentive and helpful. We received a free upgrade to what must have been one of the most beautiful rooms of the Pousada as they found out we were on our honeymoon.

Review 104:Totally inedible dinner and breakfast not much better. No offer of room service. Dirty chairs in lounge. Horrible lumpy pillow. Grounds that looked like they have been abandoned - in the case of the 'tennis centre' it really has been.

Review 105:Check in and out efficient.

Review 106:The Sat Nav does not read the hotel's location as it is so far off the public road. Perhaps the hotel would provide the co ordinates when booking. Viewing times in Castelo, are short, so visit early.

Review 107:Gracious old world atmosphere. Spectacular view, fine dining, large bedroom, off wide corridors

Review 108:Absolutely wonderful. We were stunned by the view on our arrival, and even more so when we stepped into our room and saw the church from our aerie. The balcony made the enjoyment even better. Great dinner and breakfast. The walk around the grounds was delightful. The staff was delightful, from the reception desk to the dining area - everyone was friendly and helpful.

Review 109:As you can expect on such a location also the prices in the restaurant are higher than average! The walls are not very well isolated; if you have neighbours you will hear it, and they will hear you...

Review 110:Splendid location and view over the area. We were offered an upgrade to room 314 on a corner, so even more windows. The restaurant is a nice place for dinner and breakfast and there is a spacious lobby to relax. Good wifi connection everywhere. You can walk down to the citycenter in 30 minutes.

Review 111:During our first night the staff struggled to cope following the arrival of a coach party

Review 112:The view from our room balcony and the lounge terrace were spectacular. The staff were helpful and accommodating, preparing a table on the terrace for dinner so we could enjoy the view over Viana do Castelo as night fell. The town can be easily accessed during the day/early evening via the funicular and taxis are available in the evening if you wish to dine in town.

Review 113:The general decor and staff in this hotel are lack lustre, its really all about the wonderful views.

Review 114:The view from our room was spectacular, make sure you book a sea view room because that is really the point of staying in this hotel.

Review 115:Sixties interior: outdated. Refuse room 112!: airco can not beat the heat of the sun on the windows. The pool looks like a pond in a meadow. Be aware that somethimes without a warning the only (long) road to the top is closed so you can not access the hotel. In our case due to an arrival of the 'volta' on top of the hill we could not reach the hotel from afternoon till late at night. The management who knew this long in advance of course accepted nevertheless bookings, which is nearly to be considered criminal.

Review 116:I suggest you drive your car up the hill to visit the church an enjoy the view and book a hotel downtown.

Review 117:We had reserved for two nights ... 5 months in advance. Received confirmation, everything was OK! When we arrived, it seemed that there had been an overbooking, so no rooms available. That wasn't a dream start for our honeymoon. We had reserved this beautiful Poussada ... but couldn't sleep there. It is not correct that we were not informed properly, this was inacceptable!

Review 118:Very nice poussada ... as expected.

Review 119:Cleanliness of pool Shrouded in fog - lad we didn't pay for sea view Unsuitable for children - on upper floors - no guard rails. Food doesn't match luxury of hotel Tennis court in complete disrepair and unusable. No tea coffee facilities in room

Review 120:Total silence ! Lovely sitting room

Review 121:The second night of our 2 day stay was marred by very poor service at dinner. we had to wait 75 minutes between ordering our first course and the time it arrived. Other guests were also inconvenienced by similar delays. the head waiter for the night ignored us when we tried to attract his attention and it was left to another waiter to take the flac although the problem was not his. A small wedding was in progress , but a hotel of this size and caliber should have been able to cope with the extra demand. The main course when it arrived was barely edible and by then we were too disappointed to order dessert. such a complete contrast to the previous night when the service was excellent - a different head waiter. . we did get an apology the following day on checking out and were refunded for the cost of the main course. It was such a shame that this lovely hotel was ruined by the inadequacies of one man who ruined w hat should have been a wonderful stay.

Review 122:A great location overlooking the city of Viana and close to the church of Santa Luzia. The first night was very enjoyable with a lovely meal on the terrace. The pool was nice only is was about 150 m walk from the hotel. Room was nice and had a great view

Review 123:The fact that in the rooms you had the feeling that everything was old. A little bit decadence.

Review 124:The very nice location, the very nice vew and the nice salons and restaurant of the hotel.

Review 125:The location of this Posada is excellent with wonderful view of the church and coasline. The staffs are always tried to assist, breakfast is awsome with lots of selections, and the room is kept clean and well maintained even though facilities are aged a bit. Very recommendable for honeymoon or anniversary!

Review 126:Magnificent panorama that exceeds expectations in beauty and range - better in reality than the website photos. Everything about the accomodation is welcoming - staff and premises. Views abound including river, sea and historical church. There are places to explore or relax in if we had longer. If we get back to Portugal we would definitely come back to this hotel.

Review 127:Absolutely everything, The room was superb and very spacious Wewereincrediblylucky to have a room facingtheactual church in the advert. The view was to die for. Food was good and all the staff were friendly Plenty of parking space
