Reviews for Quinta das Vinhas

Review 1:Limited availability of the evening meal as had to be booked in advance.

Review 2:The very peaceful surroundings and the very friendly, helpful staff. Excellent continental breakfast and very good evening meals. Liked sitting round a table with different nationalities.

Review 3:nothing to dislike at this Quinta

Review 4:Beautiful large room in the old Quinta. Doors opening onto the patio, a few steps from the small pool. Stunning views across the vineyard to the ocean

Review 5:Staff left for the night without checking us in. Emergency phone number did not work so we (both nearing 70 years old) spent a very uncomfortable night on a small sofa until found by the breakfast staff. They said they would not charge us for the night we did not have a room!! and offered 2 nights meals plus wine. Dinners were barely acceptable - overcooked fish with sweet potato, pineapple chunks and raw grated carrot! Eight people booked for dinner but the cook only had food for the 6 she was expecting. On check out we had been under charged and we (being honest or foolish?) pointed it out and paid in full. Two days later we got an email to say that we owed them 50 euros!! No one ever checked our passports. Management is totally shambolic.

Review 6:breakfast

Review 7:We loved staying here. We stayed in one of the cottages and it was really super. To have dinner at the "Quinta" was like being at friends, and make a fire in the fireplace in the cottage in the evening just so cosy.

Review 8:It was hard work getting to the free wifi up the hill more than 100 steps and 3G service was intermittent.

Review 9:Location, view from the slopes to the sea, easy access to fast road running east and west as well as the hills. Very pleasant cottages. Less than 1 hr from airport.

Review 10:The wifi is only available in the main house- not in the cottages.

Review 11:Amazing! This is such a beautiful property. The staff is wonderful. They're very kind and helpful.

Review 12:Mainly nothing. Some small ants in the bathroom, but who cares.

Review 13:Great little cottage with all amenities you need. Small and cozy, with fireplace. Every morning bun delivery, and cleaning service of the room. So all like in hotel, but still option for making your own dinner. Amazing friendly staff and owner, taking lots of time explaining everything as well as tours, restaurant tips and even wine recommendations. Wonderful. Location is away from restaurants, so you should have a car. I can recommend the location for staying away from the big crowd in funchal. It is very close to the attractions in the west part and central plateau, but 30 min drive from Funchal. East is 60 min, so keep in mind. But weather is quite aride, so great location also for winter weather!

Review 14:Location. Able to eat breakfast outside every morning. Small supermarket nearby to by lunch. Evening meals were excellent. Not swamped by English people.

Review 15:The location, view and atmosphere/ambience.

Review 16:the high music from a loudspeaker somewhere in the villages during religious festivities from Thursday to Monday, two weekends in late August

Review 17:the cottage and the wonderful pool above the Atlantic Ocean, the busy staff, the cleanliness (nearly too much) the climate and the old Manure House, means the old Quinta

Review 18:It would be great to have wifi on the cottages and in the pool area. The breakfast in the cottages is sufficient but it could have a little more, like fruit, cheese and ham or some cakes. There were only one bottle (it's big enough) of soap in the bathroom, but they should have provided individual soap for the bathtub and for the sink. When I arrived to make the check-in, the person who is in charge was not available (went to the market), but at least there was a phone, that I called right away and quickly she was there.

Review 19:I loved almost everything!! The location is wonderful, when you are in the pool the view is breathless. The idea of the cottages is excellent. I was given the possibility to choose the cottage. I end up to choose a individual cottage, most of the cottages are composed by two cottages. My cottage was very spacious (two floors)!!! One can also cook an hot meal inside the cottage. I only stayed one night but I was given the possibility to make a late check-out cause my cottage was not going to receive anyone on the day of my check-out. This was a big plus for me!! I was able to park the car right next to my cottage. You don't need to bring your own towels, they provide them for the pool.

Review 20:Very nice location and surroundings. Absolutely quiet at night. Great views towards the stars!

Review 21:Perhaps a bit isolated. Definitely need a car.

Review 22:Location staff facilities where excellent. Would strongly recommend

Review 23:Would have prefered evening sun--possibly there was a choice of rooms/grading

Review 24:Location. Outlook Room comfort

Review 25:Quiet, beautiful surroundings and well converted buildings with a very warm welcome.

Review 26:- amazing value for money - huge breakfast. - Beautiful location - helpfull staff.

Review 27:Lovely rural property, great food, friendly staff

Review 28:Just wonderful!

Review 29:Car park entrance/exit difficult although we were assured that improvements were imminent

Review 30:Beautifully furnished house set in a lovely garden overlooking the sea. Welcome from Andrew, the proprietor's son. Eating around the table with other multinational guests. Good Home Cooking

Review 31:Guests staying in cottages were given 3 rolls each for breakfast, so if you wanted anything else you had to go out and buy it (guests staying in the Quinta had a large choice of cereals, fruit, meats etc as well). Visiting the Quinta from the cottages was a calf straining 100 yard walk up a steep stony path: necessary not only if having dinner there but also if you wanted to access the WiFi. Access to the cottage parking was via a very narrow concrete walled road and a narrow entrance, which is not for the faint driver.

Review 32:Friendly and helpful staff Cottages were clean and dry and linen well aired Interesting company sitting down to dinner with other guests Dinners at E18.75 per person were not cheap but good value considering three courses and coffee, and the basic wine at E10 for a bottle was good value compared to local restaurants.

Review 33:Would have preferred South or West facing cottage (rather than East) to catch the late afternoon and evening sun on terrace. Sofas may need some refurbishment.

Review 34:Self-catering cottage gives flexibility in dining in, at the Quinta or local restaurants. Bed was comfortable and slept well every night. Fresh bread left by door every morning for breakfast and enough for picnic lunches. Access to range of walks. Highly recommended stay and will return.

Review 35:Everything was great

Review 36:The staff offered help when our car broke down. The setting in the vineyard and the buildings are beautiful. Great location for trips to all parts of the Island and walking routes. Nice to receive a welcome basket. We stayed in a cottage but the big house looks also great, will try this next time.

Review 37:The size of the pool and the few deckchairs around it.

Review 38:I liked the location in the middle of a vineyard facing south it wasvery quiet. We liked the terrasse in fromt of the house with a view ofthe sea over the vines.

Review 39:Should have been advised that we needed a car. Location from seamisleading as was an hour long steep walk downhill, throught two tunnelsand then another downhill section of road to Calheta. Uphill path toquinta from cottage was daunting especially at night.Walking intoCilheta beach area should be discouraged as there was pollution in thetunnel on the day we did this which caused a chest infection in one ofour group.

Review 40:Beautiful location and friendly staff.

Review 41:Beds were rather hard. Pathway to and from main house very steep and not well lit at night. Could do with more hand rails for less steady persons.

Review 42:Stayed in cottages in vineyard: Attractive, self contained accomodation in beautiful quiet setting, fresh bread delivered each day. Option to eat at main house if required. Friendly, helpful staff.

Review 43:Not ideal for access by public transport: very steep climb to bus stop. Unheated outdoor pool too cold in January (but no doubt lovely in summer).

Review 44:Beautiful old farmhouse with many antiques; atmospheric. Peaceful. Friendly helpful staff.

Review 45:There was a power cut on our second of ten nights and their were no candles, offered or available. Also it would be simple to offer a bar of soap in the bathroom. These are hardly criticism but simple observations that would make the place excellent rather than just cosy

Review 46:The setting of the cottages below the main house allows for excellent views across the SW bay over looking Calheta. I disagree with comments about access, if you are not a confident driver and are nervous of hill driving do not come to Madeira and hire a car. The group meals are a great idea to meet other like minded walkers and review and the staff are attentive without being in your face. If you want breakfast served then you can stay in the main house, but we preferred the more relaxed DIY breakfast with the bread left on our door handle every morning, which is more flexible and means you choose what you want.

Review 47:Low doorways is a painful price you pay for old style buildings.

Review 48:Madeiran style, set in vineyard at the quieter western end of the island. Clean rooms, friendly staff, excellent breakfast, communal dinner round big table.

Review 49:the old house is wonderfully restored and has a great atmosphere, though the sleeping and bath rooms could be equipped with better quality materials.

Review 50:excellent premises, rooms and staff, a really warm treat to stay there! They make any effort to make you enjoy your stay. A day in the garden with the pool, views of the Atlantic, amidst the vineyards and high trees, and one feels revived.

Review 51:Nothing, really. Previous residents have complained about the difficulty of parking, not enough space and steep and unmade roads/tracks. This has been improved. There seems to be just enough space now for all visitors. but the gravel paths are still steep and narrow. If you don't have good clutch control and a good sense of the width of your car, you may be in trouble, but that goes for driving in Madeira anywhere, not just in the Quinta das Vinhas.

Review 52:A spacious, well-equipped and simply but tastefully decorated cottage, with the bedroom on an upper level.. Quiet. Nice view. Outdoor sitting area. Clean pool. Friendly and helpful staff. Meals are simple Portugese local cooking, freshly cooked and good value. The hotel description says the dinners are taken communally round a big table. We stayed in August and we all ate at separate tables outside. Good view.

Review 53:A little difficult to find. Evening meals good and with a nice view but somewhat to expensive.

Review 54:Very nice hotel. Rooms are simple, clean, functional. View is great. Pool relaxing. Baby wellkome.

Review 55:The peaceful and relaxed atmosphere and delightful surroundings. Thestaff were helpful and congenial and I would thoroughly recommend thisQuinta to others.

Review 56:From the comfort point of view we would have preferred duvets instead ofsheets and blankets. The evening meals were generous but a bit on theheavy side. More variety and finesse in this area and we would haveeaten there more often as there are no other restaurants within walkingdistance. Jardim do Mar has several good restaurants which wefrequented.

Review 57:Quinta das Vinhas is beautiful large country house surrounded by alovely garden and vineyard. The staff made us feel very welcome andnothing was too much trouble. The views are stunning and it was arelaxing place to stay. The sitting rooms are comfortable andbeautifully furnished and the informal dining room is the best place tosocialise with the other guests. The breakfast buffet was excellent.Much nicer than staying in a hotel. I'd love to stay there next time wevisit Madeira.

Review 58:Quinta das Vinhas was everything we hoped for: stunning location, comfortable period property full of character, efficient friendly service (very helpful sorting out my lost baggage), and wonderful breakfasts that we could take on the terrace area.

Review 59:Beautiful quinta, nice views, great atmosphere, excellent service andhospitality. We booked two adjacent rooms downstairs, so we had directaccess to the beautiful garden. Our children (10 + 7 years) felt free toplay in- and outdoors. We loved staying at this place! Next time inMadeira, we would definitely book Quinta das Vinhas again.
