Reviews for Kviknes Hotel

Review 1:The hallways in the room areas need a remodel, but once you get into the room it is done just fine.

Review 2:The hotel is an older hotel, but has some very unique qualities. The common area, Bar, Lobby and dinning area is very well cared for and is excellent. The hotel has a history and very large accommodation for guests. The room was large, clean and fine.

Review 3:We thought we were staying in the historic part of the hotel so we were disappointed to be placed in a room in the bldg behind the hotel you see in pictures. Make sure you know what you are booking.

Review 4:The hotel is really pretty and in a nice location. We did a hike from the hotel and got spectacular views. Definitely a highlight.

Review 5:The newer building isn't very attractive from the outside, but everything was fine inside. The older building is a treasure.

Review 6:Very convenient (just several steps) from the express boat dock. We rented bikes from shop along the waterfront and we had a magnificent ride.

Review 7:The 'modern' wing is an eyesore from the exterior, but on the inside it is okay. I thought the buffet breakfast was extensive, but lacking in quality from other hotel breakfasts we had in Scandinavia. The breads weren't as fresh, etc. Also, we were by far the youngest guests when we were there (most guests were in their 70s/80s). Maybe this happens in off season? Large tour groups of seniors?

Review 8:The historic wing is just lovely!! Best views imaginable from our large balcony. We had a la carte dinner at the bar, and it was delicious. The dessert was menorable. The staff was helpful and kind. Balestrand is a cute little village. We were very pleased with our stay.

Review 9:Other than near reception, wifi availability is poor; a real pain with logins and drop-outs

Review 10:A beautiful, peaceful and restful location enhanced by friendly, smiling staff

Review 11:the hotel allowed tour groups exclusive access to many of the historic public spaces, sleeping rooms are spartan at best, in the new tower.

Review 12:Very friendly staff, excellent but pricey dinner buffet, some rooms have excellent views. Breakfast buffet was excellent. If reserving a room in the newer tower ask for a high floor (floors 6-8) facing the water.

Review 13:Unfortunately, it was Sunday in early Sept and literally nothing in town was open.

Review 14:A very welcoming crew, relaxing experience. The dinner was one of the best meals I've ever had.

Review 15:Our stay was too short!

Review 16:Very convenient location right next to the dock for the ferry. The rooms are a little dated but the hotel has a very cosy atmosphere and wonderful breakfast options. Beautiful views and lovely dinner menu.

Review 17:We were placed in a room next to the elevator which was making very loud noise the entire evening; we kept waiting for it to subside . Unfortunately we werent able to sleep the entire night . This was very unfortunate as this was a special anniversary trip we had planned We spoke to the management and asked for a partial reimbursement ( 25%) since we enjoyed everything else about the stay. As to this point ( August 25th) they havent complied with our request

Review 18:Everything was fantastic - the views, the staff , the food !!

Review 19:Wifi didn't work great in the rooms but not a big deal. Nice to unplug!

Review 20:We loved our stay at your hotel. The property was wonderful and the views from every direction were stunning. Great food. Lovely, quiet, calm town. Loved it all!

Review 21:The rooms are old fashioned with spartan furnishings. There are no room safes or mini bars, and this is clearly a favoured location for bus tours to stay, which means at busy times staff are stretched to provide good service.

Review 22:The views, location, dining, lounges, verandas, and balconies are all excellent, and give wonderful vistas of the fjords and mountains.

Review 23:Our room 776 was supposed to be a room with a view, but compared to others, there was no view Wi-Fi did not work Dinner was too expensive

Review 24:The location is excellent

Review 25:Setting was fantastic! Request old section with fjord view when you book. Loved the heated bathroom floor and duvet. Wifi did not reach my room but was fine in the lobby. Hotel facilitated car rental which could not have been easier.

Review 26:The only (minor) problem we had was that elevator service was not available on our floor, so we had to walk down a flight with all our luggage in order to exit.

Review 27:Wonderful retreat in fjord country that just begs you to soak in the scenery and relax! Food was excellent, and the best surprise of all was the extensive and fairly-priced wine list. The owner was very happy to share with us some of his wonderful wines at prices that could not be touched in the U.S.

Review 28:No WiFi. They advertised that they had it, but we were unable to get on. Also, there were a LOT of tour groups at the hotel (one of the only large hotels), so if that bothers you, beware.

Review 29:The hotel is large and well-maintained. We stayed in the newer part, so it was not as charming, but still lovely. Our view was gorgeous.

Review 30:Hotel needs to be upgraded, starting to look shabby. Wifi is terrible. Seems to work best in lobby. If you like to be surrounded by tourists this is the place for you. Older part of hotel is very noisy. Hotel is best location and worth a visit, stay elsewhere. It's like staying on a carnival cruise.

Review 31:Hotel front desk is helpful and friendly. Location is stunning and some of the common rooms are lovely.

Review 32:I had an amazing view and a balcony to enjoy it. There were thick curtains to block out the nighttime sunlight when I needed it. The hotel restaurant was also open late to get a tasty fish meal before bed.

Review 33:WiFi was not working. The hotel is all about heritage charm, but, the room was in the new building which has nothing heritage about it.

Review 34:View from the hotel room.

Review 35:the stanard room facility and decoration is not suit for the big fames of this hotel.

Review 36:location, old style dining room and beautiful hotel lobby/lounge.

Review 37:No minibar in the room. No refrigerator, and missed a waterboiler.

Review 38:Great Food, very serviceminded staff, room with an amacing view and balcony, bathtub in standard rooms. A perfect stay.

Review 39:Hallway to our room was bit tired but the pictures made it interesting. Several buses each day of tourists but in actuality not sure what they did with them because other than seeing them check in can't say I ever say them again. The were all checked out and gone before I made to breakfast on either day - remind me not to go on those tours!

Review 40:A historic hotel with fabulous charm. Buffets must of had something for everyone and plenty of it at that. Great view even though it was a bit rainy and cool when we were there. The decks would be great if just a bit warmer. We stayed in the older section with a view to the sea but we looked at a room in the newer section with a view to the village and I would have enjoyed that as well.

Review 41:While the hotel us beautifully decorated, you can see the interior decor as a visitor and not s a guest. if you stay at the new part the room is very simple, not worth the high price. At meals - food was bot warm enough

Review 42:The hotel is nicely decorated. We stayed at the new building, 8th floor, and had beautiful views.

Review 43:Nothing!

Review 44:The breakfast was included and delicious. We also got a great deal on a room on booking.com the night before we stayed. So it paid in this case to procrastinate!

Review 45:The wifi did not work in the room. The prices in the main dining room were outrageous.

Review 46:The view from our room on the 7th floor was excellent. Dinner in the bar was excellent

Review 47:The dinner was very expensive no one could eat as Much as it would take to justify the cost. Yes it was very good but we ate at a local place for a lot less with friendly people, good service and the food was very good.

Review 48:Great staff, helpful, polite and friendly. The staff appeared happy to be there and we're mostly quite youthful and really helpful. Room was comfortable, view was great and overall we loved our experience there.

Review 49:Stayed in "new" addition with room furnished with bare necessities. Not very memorable but excellent view to the mountains.Disappointed to miss the smorgasbord as advertised because not enough people registered in hotel.

Review 50:Location and friendly staff.

Review 51:Glad we were not in the modern addition which does not fit the surroundings. It is just a cement block and not modeled after the older part. Also wish there was an elevator in the older section.

Review 52:Invariably in Norwegian hotels, we found meals were usually buggefs. All of them were a mix of cold and hot foods to serve yourself and all of them were good, but Kviknes Hotel was the best food we had in our week in Norway and also the best choice and selection. The hotel was comfortable and while it might have been nice to stay in the older, original building, our more modern rooms were fine and the views from our balcony were stunning!! We would definitely stay here again!

Review 53:Smorgasbord dinner at exorbitant price. We chose the limited but excellent menu in the little cafe without the views. Fine for us because we had the dining room for breakfast but many overnighters were disappointed.

Review 54:This is a fantastic hotel. Perfectly situated between two arms of the fjord, beautifully presented with a sense of history and purpose. Loved the comfort, the atmosphere, the views.

Review 55:Rooms really too simple New modern area worth a Novotel

Review 56:Location and view from the room Public areas of the hotel Pianist at the bar after dinner Nice Winelist

Review 57:Your WiFi did not work for us. Also the bed needed upgrading.

Review 58:Your staff were all very professional and easy to deal with. A plus! Location is very nice.

Review 59:The website is not accurate. I requested a double room with a view. The view was of a parking lot. In the "modern" section which is actually decorated like the early 1960s the rooms with a view are twins. The rooms are small, the halls are dingy and the wifi is painfully slow. These rooms are two star at best. I will say that I was moved to a room with a view after I complained but it was not what I had expected after viewing the website. There are very few rooms with a view in the historic part of the hotel. Furthermore, there is no gym and the sauna has apparently been out of service for some time. The staff was overwhelmed with complaints and when I found a more suitable room in a different hotel with a beautiful view of the fjord, the staff did agree to let me leave without paying a cancellation fee.

Review 60:The location and historic section. The staff at the front desk.

Review 61:Deception. Paying us$275 per night to be then directed out the back to what looks like an 8 story concrete toilet block. Poor decor, no room safe, no kettle, peeling paint etc. really felt totally disengaged from the hotel you see in the pictures. Loved the area, hated the hotel. Change pics on advertising to show a tired concrete toilet block for $275 per night and we wouldnt have even considered it.

Review 62:Good breakfast and location

Review 63:The dining room was very big and got quite busy with bus tour groups. The modern part of the hotel could do with sprucing up abit, it looks abit tired from the outside.

Review 64:The hotel is in a beautiful spot with mountains as a backdrop and the fjord waters lapping up to the front garden's manicured lawns. Forget the buffet and eat a la carte. The crayfish soup was the best I'd ever tasted anywhere. Really delicious. The maitre de was very courteous and friendly as were all of the staff. Reception staff were very helpful, efficient and friendly. The room was in the modern part of the hotel but it was very nice and had a small balcony with wonderful views. There were very comfortable sitting areas near the dining room and in the bar. Also outdoor seating with wonderful fjord views. A lovely location and I enjoyed my stay. There was a decent amount of parking in front of the hotel too.

Review 65:The rooms were small, filfthy, dated, carpet discoloured and similar to those of a roadside motel- misleading from the exterior and downstair and the photos we had seen on the site. Also, our fjord view room which we paid for was a view of a crusis ship, and dock. Also staff was busy chit chatting with each other it took ages for them to awknowledge we were waiting to check in. Then when we appoached concierge to check she was on her cellphone texting and said to her collegue "you take them" - this felt quite unprofessional. Very expensive for what it was

Review 66:The downstairs was beautiful and upkept. (you can tell in the past it was once an elegant hotel)- from downstairs.

Review 67:The rooms in the new building are dated. They need refreshing. Paint peeling on the balcony outside our room and the beds are low and narrow. Rooms are also small especially if you are staying several nights. Bathroom was bright and clean. We did not see any rooms in the old part of the hotel, but before I recommend the hotel to others, I would warn them about the new hotel wing. They might want to spend more $$ for a demi-suite in the old part.

Review 68:Location is wonderful - the premier spot for Balestrand. Building is charming and had great history. Furnishings are very comfortable and history of the hotel very interesting. The breakfast buffet is fantastic and the dining room manager and maitre 'd were first-rate. All the staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about day trips and activities. Everyone is very polite and willing to help.

Review 118:The view, the large room, the elegance, & the very luxurious breakfast.

Review 119:Nice relaxing atmosphere. Beautiful salons.

Review 120:Linens on the beds were low quality

Review 121:Great location, very friendly staff, historic lobby / bar / restaurant areas were really cool

Review 122:Spectacular View from our room Spaciousness and comfort Very good food

Review 123:The comparison of older historic to newer section of the hotel is a displeaser. Anyone staying there has the expectation of being in a historic hotel - Not True!! The majority of the hotel guests are roomed in a very unappealing semi modern wing of the hotel. I would not return to this hotel.

Review 124:This location is always hyped as the place to visit. While we did have a great time there were some things that left expectations unfulfilled. The view of the fjord from the hotel is overwhelming. The meals excellent. And to just wander through the hotel looking at all of the interior and furnishing - such a treat for the picture taker.

Review 125:There isn't much to do in Balestrand. It is a good place to overnight.

Review 126:The hotel was very nice. I would encourage visitors to use the various sitting rooms. Excellent view of the water and surrounding area. The food and service here is excellent.
