Reviews for Corte San Pietro

Review 1:When we arrived Matera by train from Bari, we called and asked for direction for walking to Corte San Pietro. We enjoy walking and we travel light. We were told to go to the center of Matera and find Piazza del Sedeli. And then entered the Sassi area via an arch and so on. We ended up walking with our luggage in the Sassi on very rocky, uneven, and up-and-down path to get to the place. It would have been much easier to take the flat road (via Domenico Ridola) to the west of the Sassi area (higher elevation than the Sassi area) and then decent into the Sassi area right after Palazzo Lanfrabchi; this way we could have rolled our luggage (light and on wheels) most of the way. We did very much enjoy walking in the Sassi areas after we dropped our luggage. Be sure to wear good walking shoes. We are train travelers but Matera is not well connected by train, except with Bari. Our host Fernando arranged a car to take us to a nearby town Ferrandina (only 30 euros and 25 minutes) to take a train to our next destination Salerno (also good for Napoli and Roma).

Review 2:As most people have already commented, the hospitality at Corte San Pietro is absolutely out of this world. It is not the kind you get at a typical 5-star hotel. The hospitality here is understated, extremely caring but not intrusive, and very personal, in a good way. The owner Fernando cares deeply about Matera, the Sassi, and your stay in Matera, including but beyond his 5-unit cave dwelling. He made us feel like his friends as soon as we arrived. He recommended restaurants based on our taste, things to do, a guide, and a car ride to a train station in a nearby town (to reach our next destination Salerno)--all were just excellent. Breakfast was included and was outstanding--the best we have had in Italy over many trips in more than 2 decades; it included high-quality cheeses, pastries, etc. in a very elegant and understated setting. We chatted with Fernando several times during our 2-day visit and gained more appreciation of Matera, plus these were just wonderful conversations, among all conversations. The living space is tastefully decorated, extremely clean and atmospheric. But funcationally it is not the best (probably true to all Matera cave dwellings). There is no comfortable chair to sit or a table to use a computer in our unit. Not much space to hang clothing. On the plus side, the bed was very comfortable; I had a great time taking a bath before going to sleep. Because my husband and I have different sleeping schedule, we picked the split-level unit, which worked well. We consider it a "must" for all travelers to visit Matera and to stay in a cave dwelling at least once; and this is such a great place I wouldn't even check out other places. It is on the expensive side, but worth every penny.

Review 3:The owner of this delightful little hotel was charming and made us feel very welcome. The room was luxurious and creative at the same time. A unique experience. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Review 4:A bit of nit-picking here! Given the photos in the website, I had expected our room to be a little more impressive than it was. I may be wrong but I rather think we had one of the smaller and more basic rooms. I know this is a special place retaining its real character, but a window would have been nice! Wouldn't stop me from staying there again, though.

Review 5:To stay in the centre of this amazing place was an absolute joy. Certainly the highlight of our week in Puglia. So pleased we stayed in the heart of Matera and no regrets about our choice of hotel. Very friendly and helpful owners who gave us a really useful list of the "must sees" in the Sassi. Nice breakfasts, and all round a really nice environment to stay.

Review 6:We loved everything and didn't want to leave!

Review 7:Absolutely everything! We stayed in the grand suite which was perfect, just the right blend of rustic and elegance and the whole place was so peaceful. Breakfast was delicious. The staff simply cannot do enough for you and their passion for their city Matera is infectious. The small and friendly atmosphere of Corte San Pietro made us not want to leave, we will return, please don't change anything!

Review 8:Nothing - it was perfect! Parking is tricky but the hotel arranged valet parking for 20 euro - well worth it.

Review 9:Everything! Wonderful hotel - beautifully designed, effortlessly stylish, with great locally crafted and authentic antique featured. special touches everywhere. Wonderful hosts - everyone was friendly, helpful and full of fascinating info about matera and the hotel. We wished we were staying longer.

Review 10:This is an outstanding property. Beautiful rooms, wonderful breakfast and the most charming staff for whom nothing is too much trouble. Cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

Review 11:We stayed in a beautiful room which had previously been a church and were given a tour of the water system below the hotel. The breakfasts were lovely and the staff could not have been more helpful.

Review 12:that we stayed only for one night ;-)

Review 13:We spent 1 night here on our honeymoon and it was one of the best places we stayed during our 3 weeks travelling Italy. Beautiful rooms, lovely owners and staff, delicious breakfast, great location in Matera. The people made our stay feel like our home away from home. We will be back.

Review 14:Having to leave!

Review 15:We absolutely fell in love with Matera and Corte San Pietro. From the moment we parked our car outside and checked in, exceptional service was offered by the friendly staff. The accommodation has been beautifully thought out and makes for more than a comfortable stay. We had a split level room which was just delightful. After being recommended to visit one of the houses which showed a short documentary on the history of the Sassi we became so much more curious about Matera and the Sassi and we asked if Anna, one of the staff of Corte San Pietro (who is also a qualified guide) could take us on a tour of the Sassi. Her passion for this place was obvious and it wasn't long before we felt a real appreciation of this city. The owners of Corte San Pietro are lovely and all staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. This place comes highly recommended and we wouldn't hesitate to stay again if we had the opportunity.

Review 16:A small (only 5 rooms) hotel in an absolutely stunning location, right in the Sasso Caveoso. Very friendly and helpful staff, full of attentions. Excellent Italian breakfast. Magical "cave"-rooms. We stayed only 2 nights, would have loved at least 4!

Review 17:This beautiful boutique hotel is absolutely flawless. We were warmly welcomed by Fernando, Anne and Angela, who assisted us with every enquiry and tirelessly endeavoured to make our visit to Matera as pleasant as possible. The hotel has been built with passion and commitment by the owner and the result is a property of high standard with a unique character, ensuring a wonderful stay in amazing Matera.

Review 18:Fernando the owner was very friendly and a great character. He helped us with information about matera and suggestions for great local restaurants and a bar for after dinner that felt very authentic and wasn't full of tourists.

Review 19:The property is absolutely beautiful, perfect in every way. The attention to detail in decor, preservation of the area, all are commendable. The owners are absolutely lovely and can't do enough to make you feel Like a welcomed guest. Perfect !

Review 20:this hotel, quite unlike any other was special in every way, the attentive staff, the candles always lit in the bedroom, the sheer calm and the beatuy of the sassi

Review 21:Everything was near perfect. The attention of the owners, the recommendations of the staff and particularly Anna, little dog Kiki who entertained us so well, breakfast and vibe of the place.

Review 22:We should have stayed another night at this magical place!

Review 23:What a wonderful place and location. Very warm and personal reception, immediately asked us if we would like a coffee. They went out of there way to explain everything, booked a restaurant and gave us a private tour in their own cistern system. Very nice breakfast. The valet parking was great.

Review 24:The best of two worlds. Staying in the heart of the historical district of Matera by day and walking up almost any street to enjoy the passeggiata in the upper piazza in the evening. The owners and all the staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. They provide a delicious breakfast and deliver a bowl of fresh fruit to the room daily. They went out of their way to make sure we had a breakfast before we left for an early flight. The room was bright, cozy and peaceful.

Review 25:That my house isn't like this place. Heh. Although there is some construction going on directly next door and very loud at some points, it is temporary and aside from that the trip was perfect.

Review 26:The owners are two of the nicest hosts I've ever come across. Can't say enough how much I enjoyed them. The bathtub...!!!!!! Wow. The bowl of wonderful fresh fruits in my room. The bed. The courtyard. The dog. The location. The lighting. The breakfast. All amazing.

Review 27:Fab place, just construction next door( guess for next few weeks will still b there)

Review 28:What a hidden gem,Gorgeous place, family business with generous attitude of owners:) love love love!we hope to come back to " soul spa" in few years!

Review 29:Nothing at all.

Review 30:Great hotel in the center of Matera; perfect to fully enjoy your stay in the old town. Large and romantic room (with candles) and access to a quiet courtyard where one can relax. Very helpful owner and staff. Solutions to all our traveling arrangements in the region were found and recommendations for food and other things to do in Matera were fantastic. Highly recommended!

Review 39:The renovated caves were modern, intimate and very comfortable and by candle light very sexy. The shower had lots of pressure and the water flow. The owner, Fernando was extremely helpful and accommodating. We loved his signs that read "temporary home of " and the guest's name.

Review 48:Hotel was wonderful--very unique setting and staff couldn't have been more welcoming and hospitable! The breakfast provided was fresh, varied, and delicious. Our comfort and satisfaction were top priority with this hotel.

Review 49:No parking due to a festival.

Review 50:The owner and staff went out of their way to help us get a flat tire fixed. They also gave great recommendations for restaurants. While we were there, the owner had some guests stranded due to snow and he called lots of people, including the police (who did not offer to help), and finally located a friend with a 4 wheel drive who picked up the guests and delivered them to the hotel. Great Service! The place is well situated for exploring Madera.

Review 51:We loved every minute of our stay in the Corte San Pietro. The beautiful design of the hotel, with its rooms set around a very attractive central courtyard, made a tremendous impression upon us. You will be welcomed like home but still you will wonder "where I am? heaven or earth?" :) Matera is really amazing place and worth to be visited and if you choose Corte San Pietro then your trip will be complete. Staff is very professional and breakfast amazing. About the room..you will get the feeling that you don't want to go out that night, just be there enjoy and relax

Review 56:Everything! The rooms are beautiful, candlelit, comfortable beds, great shower, even a mini fridge. The breakfast was amazing! The staff are helpful and friendly. The very gracious owners live on site. We had a great stay. Wine is the evenings is a nice touch and a great way to meet the other guests.

Review 57:Driving & parking was a little tricky, but the staff was very helpful in getting a valet to bring our car to a garage.

Review 58:Beautiful ambiance, the mix of ancient and modern was refreshing. The owner & staff were wonderful. Many good restaurants in the vicinity & sites were all within walking distance.

Review 59:The lighting could have been better in the room, it was a little too dark.

Breakfast was delicious with cheeses, meats, fruits and wonderful pastries. The staff was friendly and very helpful with making dinner reservations, organizing tours or anything else we needed. Staying in a cave could not be more luxurious. We highly recommend Corte San Pietro.

Review 62:Parking nearby can be a problem. We ended up having to park in a multi storey car park about 5 mins drive away which cost 18 Euro a night. This is a problem for all accommodation in the Sassi so not a problem unique to this hotel

Offered us a drink on arrival & also a coffee while they explained the way back to the airport next morning Rooms - very well designed with lovely touches Food - breakfast only but plenty of choice and good quality food The staff also let you choose your room out of those still available and give you a tour of the amazing cellars which spread out under the hotel are being renovated into a spa Nothing too much trouble for the staff. Review 67:Position is excellent as well as the classy touch of every singleparticular inside this hidden paradise. Service is efficent and discreteand the owners are what people call "gentili and raffinati" inItalian lenguage. (Kind and classy ....to translate it...).

Review 68:Wonderful place with max. facilities allowed, but the most important atmosphere which the owner & his wonderful wife give to your staying in their very nice small hotel make you feel like at home ,they even do all what you want before you even think abt that 24hrs a day. really was great time I spent with my family & recommend all who want to visit Matera to try stay there.

The hotel is very authentic, because it has a historical background. The rooms are very charming and comfortable. The breakfast was lovely!

Review 70:We loved everything about this hotel -hospitality,friendliness, attention to detail and of course the hotel itself. The rooms were spectacular, carved out of rock and so well equipped with everything one might need. In effect the rooms were caves, sounds primitive but decorated with such design elan that unfortunately it will be much more difficult to reserve one of these grottoes in the future.
