Reviews for Basiliani Hotel

Review 1:In our room 109 on the walls there is some problems from the moisture.Need some repainting

Review 2:Matera is a miracle city :) Hotel is with super view & good service. Location is number one

Review 3:As expected, cave dwellings are a bit humid. It would have helped to have the option to leave a window open.

Review 4:Spectacular view from the hotel, friendly staff.

Review 5:Our room had bad air because there was only one small window we couldn't open and since this is a cave, it can get harder to breathe.

Review 6:Very unique atmosphere - the experience living in a cave, good location, the best breakfast.

Review 7:Passers by on the street could look into our room, lack of lounge facilities in hotel, there was only a small dining room and lobby and nowhere to go for a drink

Review 8:View from room, space in room, pleasant staff, breakfast

Review 9:I would not recommend it for anybody who has difficulty walking on uneven surfaces. Our room could have used some painting around the bathtub. But a small thing. Room was well taken care of and clean.

Review 10:The idea of a hotel in a converted stone dwelling is great. You really feel part of the whole Unesco site you are there to visit, the Sassi. The Basilian is in a great location although a bit hard to find the first time. Be sure to call ahead to get directions and instructions on where to park. Staff was very helpful and friendly!!

Review 11:The acutal parking of our car and getting to the hotel was unsatisfactory. This is due to the fact that cars are not allowed in the centre of Matera. This made things quite difficult for us although the staff try their best to make things easy.

Review 12:Matera was a great experience and although built in a cave, the room was good. Breakfast also good.

Review 13:Only a bit difficult to find and access the hotel location.

Review 14:The owner Giuseppe was so kind to me with a full of hospitality, guiding me with where yo visit and good suggestion of restaurants to meet my preference. Friendly and helpful staff. Decent breakfast.

Review 15:Nothing to find fault with apart from finding it!! That however makes it even more special.

Review 16:A location like you have never experienced before. Just like staying in Nazareth 2000 years ago with modern facilities. If you go to Matera - and you should, this hotel is the best. Gussepi the owner was so friendly and accommodating

Review 17:- Porterage service - Lot of help with parking car (sometimes it can be difficult but don't worry - just call the hotel and they will help you) - Possibility to get flatter pillow - Location of the hotel in the middle of historic district Sassi - Aparatment is modern and comfortable

Review 18:I didn't stay long enough!

Review 19:Everything. Wonderful location, friendly people, comfortably room. So good that I'm going back next year for longer.

Review 20:The shower was quite narrow, perfect for me but I guess you would struggle if you are tall or big

Review 21:The place is amazing, location wise and the hotel itself. Apart from that the stuff is really kind and helpful they help you with luggage, not easy to carry to the place, if it wasn't because they get it from your car to the room

Review 22:Love absolutely everything. Location can't be beat. Views are incredible. In the heart of the historic area, with everything accessible by foot. Parking is relatively close and an easy walk away. Wish we could have stayed an extra night at this location.

Review 23:Comfortable, well-furnished and well-equipped great hotel with clean, spacious and atmospheric rooms made from the sassi cave dwellings. Very friendly, knowledgable and informative staff who were happy to help and recommend places to visit / eat at etc. Perfect base for exploring beautiful Matera.

Review 24:Only that there is access in the bedroom to a cellar that might be dangerous to children

Review 25:The hotel is in a stunning setting and the room was well designed. The staff are exceedingly helpful.

Review 26:The hotel's unique location, inside the mountain in Sassi, gives it the extraordinary atmosphere you'd expect, but the warm and welcoming feeling from Giusepe, the owner, was what made this place special for us!

Review 27:The musty smell - but you are in a cave that has dampness - and although there was a room fragrancer in the room - i could still smell dampness. It was an overnight stay so it was bearable, but i would not have been comfortable with that smell if it had been for a longer stay. My travel companion was not bothered by this at all. The bath tub had some staining which should have been dealt with as it looked unsightly. There was no safe in the room to keep money or valuables in .Breakfast was all cold - including the croissants - i dont mind continental breakfast but do like certain things warm.

Review 28:The location is stunning - you are overlooking the gorge - its as though you have stepped back in time as you take in your surroundings. The room we had was large and modern and well maintained with a kettle and mini bar. We both liked the large space the room provided - and it seemed secure with double locking doors. The owner was very friendly and arranged for out luggage to be taken to the hotel from outside St Peters church as the road is difficult to walk on to the hotel - and a porter carried my bag to the room. This was also extended on leaving and my case was taken to the van - and we were taken back to the area at St Peters to get a taxi . As we wanted to do more sight seeing after checking out - the owner kindly allowed us to leave our cases for another 5 hrs. They served very good cappuccino at breakfast.

Review 29:I enjoyed the warm reception when we arrived and help with our luggage. The location was perfect with beautiful views and quiet nights. The hotel is sophisticated in its design and very comfortable. Fa bene.

Review 30:The hotel was so unusual, being built into the cave and Guiseppe was so kind and helpful coming to pick us up late at night when we were tired and lost!

Review 31:Having to leave. Regret we couldn't extend.

Review 32:Thoughtful and stylish conversion of cave dwellings into design hotel in spectacular location. Hotel owner Giuseppe was fabulous from the start - from very helpful directions, briefing on Matera, suggestions on what to see, where to dine and helping with luggage.

Review 33:Giuseppe, the manager, is very helpful and accommodating. Each hotel room is constructed inside of an ancient stone cave but, appointed with all the comfort and luxury that you would find in a top hotel. free wifi the views are breathtaking. the town is filled with historic sights.

Review 34:Difficult to find by car and a long walk after registration but the staff was very helpful.

Review 35:The location in the heart of this amazing city. Rooms clean, large and comfortable with an excellent view of the gorge.

Review 36:The room felt a little humid at times, but was fine with the air conditioning running.

Review 37:The hotel is beautiful and although located in former cave homes, the rooms are modern, very well designed, and very comfortable, each with its own separate entry. Our room was huge. The hotel is located right on the gorge with wonderful views right outside your door. Service was exceptional. Extensive buffet breakfast. The hotel is located in a quiet area of the town, which we enjoyed..

Review 38:Perfect place if you want to feal the old town. The room was very larg and had every thing we needed. The hotel design is just wonderful and it was very pleasfull to stay there. The owner of the hotel was very helpfull and welcomed.

Review 39:Wifi was not great - however Matera is in a remote area

Review 40:We found the staff at this hotel to be very helpful, and friendly. the room was lovely and had a wonderful view

Review 41:Getting there is tricky. Follow the instructions that the hotel emails with the confirmation of the reservation and don't hesitate to ask for extra explanations if needed.

Review 42:Nice contrast between a contemporary, sophisticated room, and the inmediate surroundings that look like they did 20 centuries back (no wonder they were used as film locations for Biblic movies) Very nice staff, who has an authentic passion for this city, and it shows in every conversation with them.

Review 43:This not a complaint but more a sideline information: Carpark is a bit away and you have to walk about 150 meter to reception.

Review 44:The hotel is astonishing with the location in the town of Sassi/Matera. The rooms our comfortable, clean and have unique design. Very impressive

Review 45:A friendly, warm welcome from staff when we arrived on a wet, foggy night. Bags were carried to our lovely spacious rooms which were nice and warm in the chill of March. Good toiletries, great shower, good free wi fi. Breakfast plentiful and well presented. Fabulous views over the gorge, watching the kestrels flying over the gorge in the absolute silence this location has.Offer from reception to take us and our bags to our car on departure.

Review 46:Horrible pillows!!

Review 47:Loved the juxtaposition of very old and very modern. Incredible view. Very peaceful. Incredibly nice staff, could not have been more helpful.

Review 48:nothing.

Review 49:Giuseppe was marvelous from carting our bags from dropoff point to walking us to restaurant for dinner to taking us to second hotel for continuation of stay in Mater. Proprty is marvelous in all aspects. Great view from room.

Review 50:The staff went above and beyond to help us as we arrived during a snow storm much later than planned. They came to meet us and carried our bags through the snow streets, and even had a neighboring restaurant stay open for us to eat a late night dinner. They were very welcoming of my small dog and provided lots of advice on how best to see Matera. The rooms were very comfortable, clean and warm (we were there in the snow so this was key). The modern take on the sassi rooms was quite pleasing.

Review 51:It is such an interesting place to stay in, antiquated and yet utterly modern and comfortable. Right smack in the cave district and yet only about a ten to fifteen minute walk to the central square. The staff is so friendly and ever eager to please. We are a family of four adults and the room accommodated us very adequately, with lots of sitting area to spare. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Review 52:Hotel provides apartaments. Ours was about 50mt. Internet access was guaranteed by room's own modem. The view just outside the door is amazing and the location is quiet. They have a free service of picking up costumers from city free car parks direct to the hotel.

Review 53:It is not easy to find good customer service in Italy. We did here at The Basiliani. The Hotel staff was kind, helpful and very accommodating. The room was comfortable and clean with a breathtaking view. Good breakfast.

Review 54:Pillows were too thick and a little uncomfortable.

Review 55:Fantastic position with breath taking views. Hotel very attractive and full of character, Manager very helpful and friendly, Very good value and very recommendable.

Review 56:There is nothing one cannot like with this Property - it is perfect. However, I have to add a word of caution as the location is not readily accessible and people with mobility problems will have an issue. Finding the hotel is next to impossible, so be advised to have the telephone number of the hotel handy so that on arrival call the hotel and the manager would gladly come to pick you up, show you the car park and take your luggage to the hotel. Matera is not the usual city so be prepared to adapt to the surroundings and you will be pleasantly surpriced. It is an experience

Review 57:The internal design of this hotel managed to combine the old and the new in perfect harmony! Rooms have all the modren facilities, yet, they are built in caves. It combines well with the ambience of Matera. Breakfast was very good, views from the rooms are excellent and this hotel is located in the heart of the Sassi!

Review 58:Nothing :)

Review 59:Great interior, staffs, breakfast, view and room with reasonable price. You will feel you are sleeping in a modern room in 1000 year hold cave. Love the furniture, bath, lighting, and you can visit everywhere in Matera Sessi easily from the hotel

Review 60:with all this excellence, maybe the breakfast choice should be more focused on the local specialties which are many and delicious but it is a mere detail out of a very positive opinion.

Review 61:The Sassi in Matera is a unique place and a UNESCO Patrimony and Basiliani is nestled in the centre of it.

Review 62:Giuseppe and his wife were the perfect hosts. Our stay in this unique cave hotel enhanced our wonderful Matera experience. The hotel , located in the Sassi Caveoso , is a beautiful study in contrast .The ultra modern interior design and furnishings in a cave setting provided an unexpected pleasant surprise. Location is ideal for exploring the Sassi with excellent restaurants nearby.. Giuseppe made sure we had parking and our luggage delivered to our rooms.

Review 63:it was very exciting sleeping in a cave. very beautiful designed old and new interior. the humidity was high but you are sleeping in a cave, who can say this.

Review 64:We liked this, but some with mobility issues might have problems walkingon cobbled paths to hotel location.

Review 65:Fabulous location in the midst of the sassi. Incredible views. Modern, comfortable furnishings in a cave! Excellent breakfast with greatcoffee, bread, fruit, cheese, meat yogurt. Josef was so helpful. Took usin his own car to pick up our car in the paid parking lot and guided usto a free lot. Also insisted on carrying our bags. Lovely, helpful host.

Review 66:The hotel was not so easy to find and you need to be prepared for the walk with comfortable shoes.

Review 67:Location and the view from the room was magnificent, it leads you back centuries ago. Breakfast with good local produce and coffee. Helpfulness of the staff.

Review 68:Our room had some mold in the bathroom (which is no wonder given the fact that you sleep in a sort of cave).

Review 69:The location in the "sassi" is very nice; after having left our car at a parking, we were met and taken to the hotel; we also received help with our luggage as well as comprehensive information on the city and its attractions. Indeed very friendly staff. The rooms are spacious and modern.

Review 70:Sometimes it is hard to get your car near, because of movie shooting or other happening. But the owner is ready to take you with his own car.

Review 71:it is a good location to discover the Sassi area. It very quiet, picturesque place.

Review 72:We had a mezzanine room, the beds upstairs squeaked and so did the stairs, but other than this the experience staying here was good.

Review 73:Giseppi was friendly and helpful, once we eventually found the hotel it was bright modern and clean. Good location to wander around the caveso area.

Review 74:* Owner & staff super super kind, nice, friendly, informative... * My room was spacious with sufficient lighting. The room was originally a cave where people actually lived in but now modern & well decorated. * Nice location. Good view from the room and not so far from Matera old city. Thank you for your hospitality. I really appreciate it.

Review 75:The staff was very helpful and explained us everything. They recommended us a lot of things to do and see and told us about the good restaurants. The location was great and our room was very special.

Review 76:Absolutely nothing

Review 77:We drove throughout Italy for 8 weeks – 5000km and stayed at 20 hotels We rated this hotel 10.0 Breakfast – Excellent Lunch – N/A – Very Good cafes within 5 minutes walking Dinner – N/A – Very Good restaurants within 10 minutes walking Location – Outstanding for exploring the old city

Review 78:The best location, really attentive and helpful staff, clean rooms, good breakfast. We could park very close to the hotel, and the stairs to climb were not so much as described by other guests, but the view from the room was worth it!!!

Review 79:Nothing

Review 80:The service was impeccable, the design and room furnishings simply great. Views of the sassi definitely the best. Will definitely stay at the Basiliani Hotel again.

Review 81:What a place! Matera is beautiful, but made so much better by a stunning cave accommodation experience here. Giovani met us at our car and drove us through the sassi to find parking. He had another colleague meet us at reception (with better English) who drew out our route of key places to visit around the beautiful town on a map. Wifi in the room kept our two happy. Gorgeous toiletries, very reasonable minibar and Stunning light-up furniture! Super breakfast.

Review 82:No parking and a little hard to find the hotel, but all the people on piazza know where it is and you should just ask.

Review 83:The location is superb - right in the Sassi area. The view is wonderful. All rooms have private entrances. The design is great, bathroom is very nice.

Review 84:Perhaps a few more safety features in the bathroom would make exiting the tub easier.

Review 85:Located in the heart of Sassi Matera-with outstanding views and access to restaurants. A/C, wifi, TV, king bed, every comfort. Owner, Joseph went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and memorable.

Review 86:We really enjoyed all aspects of our stay and really couldn't find anything to criticise.

Review 87:Location, friendly staff, great breakfast, comfortable rooms

Review 88:Lack of English speaking channels on TV (but this is a minor thing - there is a lot of things to do in Matera... :) ).

Review 89:Staying in this hotel was a great experience. Rooms are big and clean. Hotel staff is extremely helpful.

Review 90:Nothing - too good!

Review 91:A wonderful hotel with an excellent owner, Giuseppe. He collected us by car so we could follow him into the town due difficulties with access due to a festival. He also carried all our bags. The hotel looks right over the cave area - perfect position. Giuseppe also organised an excellent english speaking guide for us and next morning made some on going travel info calls for us. Excellent gentleman. We had room 109 which looked right over the valley.

Review 92:No complaints.
