Reviews for Hotel Sassi
Review 1:Not easy to find initially. Best to park and then walk. Breakfast could be better and dining room not large enough and gloomy. Bedrooms good though!
Review 2:Excellent location and views across to the cathedral.
Review 3:There is a problem with wifi in the room. It doesn't work immediately.you have do do several things in order to make it work. It is quite disturbing. Wifi should work automatically in a prestigeous hotel.
Review 4:Location is excellent. The view from the window is wonderful and very impressive!!
Review 5:Misquitos
Review 6:A fabulous location but there a lot of stairs to climb. It would have been great if we knew in advance that someone could carry our bags up to Reception.
Review 7:Uncomfortable beds and pillows Room looked a bit worn-out Bad smell in the room Air-conditioning quite noisy
Review 8:Great location, in the middle of the Sassi district Great sweet and savoury breakfast with local food Nice, helpful staff
Review 9:Our room was a "standard" and it was very very very small, as was the bathroom. If you dropped the soap in the shower, you needed to step outside to pick it up! But our view was excellent from both bedroom and bathroom and they were both nicely appointed. We only used if for sleeping so what the heck.
Review 10:pretty good location and breakfast was good. Our room had an excellent view. Staff was helpful when asked but not warm and fuzzy.
Review 11:Internet available in public areas only
Review 12:Staff was efficient, spoke fluent English Comfortable room and bed- quiet Lovely breakfast buffet Taxi was able to drive to nearby point to take us back to the station
Review 13:Everything was great. I have nothing to complain about.
Review 14:This was the second time I stayed in this hotel.I had remembered this hotel is situated in a good location which overlooked the Sassi from the terrace. I loved the town especially at nitght.I was happy to be able to see the beautiful night view in the hotel when unfortunately it was raining and I gave up going outside.
Review 15:Guests should be given, in advance, instructions on how to arrive by car (tricky but manageable) and the need to avoid, if possible, bringing heavy baggage because access to rooms involves external paths and stairs.
Review 16:We were in room/cave 301 which is comfortable and spacious with a wonderful view of the Duomo. The staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast on the terrace was a delight.
Review 17:In order to get there, or anywhere in the Sassi, you have to climb up a quaint series of stairs- very charming and an awesome view/location. Great food within walking distance.
Review 18:We got this room for a very good price but: air conditioning was useless and the whole room was covered in moisture. That is the typical condition of any Sasso house in Matera but you don't expect to experience the medieval way of life in a hotel (not hostel). Toilet was way too small and full of stains. One bed was ok while the other was folded out from a low-quality bed-sofa. It was very hard to sleep because of the heat and the moisture that made all our cloth wet. We could get fresh only air from a very-very small window.
Review 19:The location is great. Fare was low. Fresh and good locally made products for breakfast.
Review 20:The only two bad points are inherent of a troglodyte house: little bit humid.
Review 21:Very good location, a very nice terrace with view over the Sasso. The room was good and well furnished.
Review 22:The view of Matera from my room balcony is the most amazing view I have seen in my life. I didn't want to leave. The rooms are comfortable, and the staff is great. We enjoyed so much staying there.
Review 23:Breakfast was quite poor and not much on offer seemingly no matter what time you got there. But upside was good coffee from friendly staff.
Review 24:Very friendly and helpful staff. Location and views from balcony.
Review 25:Beautifull views
Review 26:A hotel room in a cave looking out on a terrace with one of the most fascinating views we have ever seen.
Review 27:Very dificult to find the hotel. More signs needed. Very long, exhausting climb to hotel entrance from the street.
Review 28:Sleeping in a cave.
Review 29:The room was so small that we could not open our luggage, but that is part of being in the Sassi...
Review 30:The location in the Sassi
Review 31:fantastic position and view
Review 32:The location was magnificent!
Review 33:A great building in a fascinating part of the city. Our balcony gave us the best views of the Sissi.
Review 34:Poor air conditioning and shower recess. The shower curtain has to go!
Review 35:Location and helpful staff. And the views.
Review 36:Bathroom is very basic but serviceable.
Review 37:Location, location, location
Review 38:access to hotel and garage
Review 39:old town and history
Review 40:It is hard to reach this place and is most inconvinient if you have laggage (like we have).
Review 41:breakfast - cold pizza, not enough fruit and other items to eat
Review 42:authentic sassi hotel, wonderful view from my room, price reasonable for location
Review 43:I have a wonderful experience here. Although the location is near a bar, it is acceptable.
Review 44:The location in an UNESCO site.
Review 45:Extremely helpful and friendly staff- stunning large room overlooking the spectacular town and cathedral
Review 46:Bathroom could be updated
Review 47:Location Staff General atmosphere
Review 48:Great location!
Review 49:Location, breakfast
Review 50:Parking was a little far away, but what do you expect when you stay in such an historic location.
Review 51:Rented the room for the location and the history... Nice room but a little awkward to get to.
Review 52:Was a little disappointed with the property. Looked much better online. Room and bath needs an update. We had a small terrace but had to wash the table and chairs before we sat down. Of course, it probably depends on which room you are assigned.
Review 53:Location and view of the Sassi.
Review 54:Great, central location with views of the Sassi. Friendly, English-speaking staff, and a wonderful breakfast. Matera was amazing! Eat at Oi Mari just down the steps.
Review 55:Not for this hotel but careful there is no public transport to reach to Matera on Sunday/Public holiday! I took taxi from Fernandina station and cost 40 Euro (15min).
Review 56:The location is excellent. The hotels are still inside the sassi but do not need to walk around the sassi area with slopes. The view from the terrace is so amazing. Staffs were very friendly.
Review 57:They advertise 'all rooms are air conditioned' but when I asked about air con I was told it wasn't on at the moment, will be turned on again at the end of October. It was very hot when I was there so my only options were either sleep with balcony door open and get no sleep because of the noise and street lights or close the doors and get no sleep because of the heat. If I had known there was no air con I would not have booked here, I consider this false advertising.
Review 58:I loved the view from my room and the location of the hotel was excellent for exploring the Sassi. Breakfast was good and staff helpful.
Review 59:No wifi in the room.
Review 60:Beautiful view from the balcony facing duomo. Convenient location. A bit tired but charming room. Staffs are friendly and helpful.
Review 61:Steps, steps:-) Breakfast was very nice and plentiful, but a variety of pizzas for breakfast was a bit too exotic for us (we had cornettos and cappucinos instead). We had to bring the luggage by ourselves from a nearby garage Damascus (very hard to find) - which was a chore to manage on the uphill and cobble stones of the winding streets of Matera.
Review 62:The location of Hotel Sassi is superb. The staff (Vivian and Sabrina) were very helpful and pleasant to talk to. They suggested a trip to a 8th Century Bizantyne Cave Church that we would never find ourselves, which was extra ordinary and unique. we stayed in room 301 which is a hike to get to (steps, steps), but well worth it.
Review 63:Check in on arrival could have been more welcoming (reception busy with a group). After that generally all staff were very helpful.
Review 64:Wonderful views over the Sassi. Breakfast was good - brioche, pizza, fruit.
Review 65:Wonderful place with fabulous views and great staff. While some might be unhappy about it being located down a number of steps, we did not mind in the least. Just loved being there and loved Matera.
Review 66:Could have provided better information regarding parking prior to arrival.
Review 67:Phenomenal view from the balcony. Unique cave-like room with beautiful features. Comfortable. Amazing breakfast! Very accommodating and pleasant staff.
Review 68:the furniture in the room could be better, more stylish furnishings would give a big plus to the overall hotel impression. and the smell of the room could be better
Review 69:The location of the hotel is perfect, right in the Matera sassi, with an amazing view of the Duomo and Sassi. It is super convenient to visit Matera. City is absolutely worthy to visit and spend a night there. The stuff was very nice and breakfast very good, with typical kind of pizza/foccacia, sweet brioche and fruits. Our room was simple, the bathroom was a bit small, but it was absolutely enough for one night stay in Matera. A free parking area is around 10min walk (hotel is in the restricted area no accessible by car), and the way to the hotel is well described with the signs at every road-cross. Sleeping in the cave is a nice experience.
Review 70:My room was directly next the reception and this could be very loud, particualry if trying to have an italian style siesta. One morning thesweet cornetto I ate was not fresh.
Review 71:Excellent view from my single room with good-sized private balcony.Helpful staff. The foccaccia at breakfast is highly recommended.Delicious. The hotel is in a great sassi position.
Review 72:we booked a room in a cave and this is what we got. Despite the modern comfort add-ins (good bathroom, albeit small, tv, air conditioning,..) this was a cave with a sleight damp smell and... very little natural light (only a small window). A bit spooky to sleep in..
Review 73:the setting of this hotel is amazing, right in the Matera sassi, 5 min walk from free parking area and piazza Vittorio Veneto. They did a fantastic job in renovating the place, fitting modern comforts in the trogloditic cave dewllings. Fantastic view on the cathedral from the balcony, very friendly and efficient staff.
Review 74:The location, as there were no cars. Very quite and enjoyable. The staff was friendly and helpful and the breakfast was great with homemade foccacia...the best bread/dough in Italia.
Review 75:The hotel it self is very worn and old. It is clean but needs new furnishings and painting. At best it's a three star and that due to it's location.
Review 76:The hotel is in a great location and Matera is absolutely amazing.
Review 77:Our room was overly basic, ie a closet or somewhere to hang up a few clothes would have been nice!
Review 78:The location. Matera is a unique experience, and the Hotel Sassi is right in the middle of it!
Review 79:We liked everything. The staff was nice, so we think to come back.
Review 80:The feeling of getting so back in time, the magical setting, the niceatmosphere.
Review 81:Directions given on the booking.com site were poor.
Review 82:Fabulous views from rooms & terraces. Good WiFi.
Review 83:very small room no wifi in the room very expensive for what it brings
Review 84:very good breakfast great location
Review 85:Hard to find. had to park a ways away.
Review 86:breakfast a bit too local, suggestion : add plain bread to the selection. thanks!
Review 87:the vue from the terrace the location
Review 88:Fantastic view of sassi, nice cave room and best breakfast in southern Italy.
Review 89:Carrier was hard to move.
Review 90:This view from the room was very nice.
Review 91:family room without adeguate furniture
Review 92:location and breakfast buffet
Review 93:location
Review 94:An amazing location - right in the middle of the sassi.
Review 95:Seemed a bit damp
Review 96:Interesting to stay in a cave house
Review 97:A fabulous location.
Review 98:Room was a little hot. But that is minor.
Review 99:Clean and centrally located. Nice breakfast.
Review 100:Difficult to arrive at the hotel itself due to the complexities of the city. Signage and clear directions ahead of time would be helpful.
Review 101:transportation is a little difficult
Review 102:good sassi view
Review 103:location is astonishing and staff very helpful
Review 104:Old furniture.Humidity in rooms.They need air-condition.Very rude staff.
Review 105:The view from the terrace.
Review 106:The location.
Review 107:impossible to find!!!
Review 108:Loved the town, although it certainly seemed to be dead at night. Only found one restaurant that was lively in the Sassi.
Review 109:View andlocation
