Reviews for Le Dodici Lune
Review 1:None
Review 2:Staff, location and clean and spacious cave guest room. We felt like we live in fairy tale. Thank you all pleasant and extremely helpful staff, Chiara, Maria, John and other receptionist lady.
Review 3:the architctural treatment.. so complicated to actually build such a place, elegant interiors and fifshes, matching new block masonry set against the very fragile sandstone cave forms. well located insuch a dramatic setting
Review 4:There is really nothing bad to say about this property, except that they have these shampoos/shower gels that are impossible to open without a scissors.
Review 5:Beautiful location, Fast Internet, Delicious Sunday Breakfast (a bit disappointed to not see the same foccachias and croissants on the next day though), Extremely Helpful and Accomodating Staff
Review 6:The steps leading up to the hotel and the location were very difficult to climb The hotel should make sure that people are aware of this before they book as anyone old or disabled would most probably not be able to climb all the hazardous steps The reception staff were unhelpful and the food was just mediocre The breakfast was poor The furnishings in the room were vert basic
Review 7:The scenery and the views were great
Review 8:Located in the heart of Matera, it offers spacious, recently renovated rooms in former storage caves. Everything is brand new and spotless clean. WiFi is very fast, the restaurant exceptional. Staff is really kind and helpful. The old town of Matera is full of stairs, so going there by car is out of question. If you tell the staff the model and plates of your car, they will arrange a parking spot with reduced fee in a nearby (2km) parking garage.Excellent service and a great location - Le 12 Lune is really amazing.
Review 9:Difficult to locate.Parking outside of restricted zone ,which is required, is not easy. ......very confusing. Maybe a centrally located pick up service would be helpful.
Review 10:Lovely hotel, quiet, comfortable with a good staff.
Review 11:a bit far away from the center, need to climb a hill to get there. one of receptionists doesnt speak a word english (or anything else than italian)
Review 12:fast internet, cosy rooms
Review 13:Some of the fittings -- towel racks, clothes racks, faucets -- were not very high quality and were already beginning to fall apart or show wear. The garage for parking the car was several kilometers away from the hotel and difficult to find. There was no TV in the room.
Review 14:The cave rooms were recently done, beautiful and fairly well-appointed. There are terraces and a courtyard which must be lovely in good weather. The room and bathroom was very clean. The bedroom was very spacious, but the bathroom had a tiny shower. The wifi worked very well. The cave area of Matera is difficult to reach by car, so the last few hundred meters are on foot. The hotel staff did help with our bags. The hotel provided breakfast every morning which was an average hotel breakfast. We dined at the hotel one evening and it was very enjoyable.
Review 15:It wasn't an issue for us, but do note that there are a lot of stairs to access.
Review 16:The location of this hotel is fabulous and the rooms are huge. We loved being in the heart of the Sassi and everything is within walking distance. Parking can be a bit tricky but the staff were very helpful.
Review 17:Hotel is a building site undergoing extensive renovations with scaffolding covering most of it, with workmen moving about immediately outside courtyard room. Description of "terrace" is a joke - it's a STEP! Minute window so very little daylight and limited fresh air. Mould in the shower cubicle.
Review 18:Room size; comfortable beds; decent location near main square but difficult to access with luggage
Review 19:Bit far to travel with luggage through city (especially if park in "wrong place")
Review 20:Original location (cave). Nice clean room. Helpful friendly staff. Good breakfast.
Review 21:Several of the staff were standing around overlooking you whilst you had breakfast
Review 22:Breakfasts were good and the area was very interesting The Hotel was an interesting Building and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 23:If you plan to base in matera to see neighboring towns you need to take bus from hotel to car park. Last bus back to hotel is 8pm.
Review 24:Lovely cave hotel in a wonderful setting in the magnification town of matera. Several days stay necessary to see it all.
Review 25:Breakfast was poor and ran out if you went down later than others. Evening meal was inedible Wine was expensive Was given incorrect information twice on reception. Once resulting in having to walk a long way round the Sassi as incorrect details back to the were given.
Review 26:Location was good Room was a real sassi room as was the hotel Staff pleasant if not always correct in what they told you
Review 27:I had a disappointing meal but my partner said his was the best of the holiday so I think I just had bad luck!
Review 28:Friendly and an amazing place. Parking worked out surprisingly well (given the restrictions in the town) and helpful staff.
Review 29:The staff were very helpful & friendly and the food was excellent. Ideally placed within the Sassi and close to the bus stop. A wonderful place to stay.
Review 30:Everything was perfect!
Review 31:Maria Theresa, her mum, John and the whole team are extremely lovely and helpful people. The place is charming, perfectly located with good amenities and a high quality breakfast. The room was spacious and made from one of the original caves. The food served in the restaurant is exquisite. It was definitely the best place we stayed in during our trip in Puglia. Hope to stay there again one day.
Review 32:Nothing
Review 33:Excellent Location near to the centre Excellent restaurant with local food. Excellent Breakfast. Suite was awesome and value for money and came with free wine/water/juice, free wifi. Staff was very friendly and rooms were spacious and clean.
Review 34:Breakfast was not the best we have ever had, there were never enough glasses or plates out and the food selection was very basic and not much of it on offer. the tea and coffee was always luke warm.
Review 35:The location was excellent being within easy walking distance of everything, the room was fantastic, very spacious and clean. There was a computer for use in the room too which was useful. Always plenty clean towels. We also had the use of a computer in the room.
Review 36:The humidity was so bad in the room that the bed spread was soaked and the sheets were so damp that when I took a brief nap in the heat of the day, my back and legs were wet. Given I had made reservations for this room, I was surprised the dehumidifiers were not already on and the bedding checked before we arrived. Humidity is always a problem for the "caves" but nothing was done to deal with it by the staff. I will certainly make sure this does not happen to me on my next stay.
Review 37:This is a great small hotel. I have stayed here four times and will stay here again.
Review 38:Did not get to eat in restaurant as had made prior arrangements elsewhere but did look very nice. Breakfast was lacking somewhat (website advertised hot items which were not provided) plus some bread/eggs would have been nice)
Review 39:We booked a suite for two nights and the room was amazing! Very unique and spacious. Great location in centre. Welcome and intro from John was fab and he gave lots of very useful hints and tips. All staff very friendly. If being constructive, we would have liked coffee available in the room (a selection of tea was provided but no coffee), a bottle opener for the wine in minibar and the room, being a cave, was humid, so would suggest using dehumidifiers all the time as bed sheets could get damp. Otherwise a fantastic stay.
Review 40:The person who covered reception on the last day were not so helpful and didn't even wish us good morning. I was quite surprised.
Review 41:Very nice host on the first day. Extremely helpful lady - Cinzia Matera. Very pleasant restaurant staff from Senegal. Thank you.
Review 42:Necessary renovation works taking place, building partly covered.
Review 43:Lovely view of the ancient town from this hotel. Very interesting room made from one of the original cave dwellings, great experience staying there.
Review 44:Materra is a lovely and very very old city - unfortunately now they don't still have the mules to take your suitcases up to your room. from the parking lot.
Review 45:A fabulous room set in a cave 14m. long with roof vaults set at three different heights. The newly opened and managed restaurant was excellent value for lovely food - better than we found in the town centre. A memorable stay - and the many stairs keep you fit!
Review 46:Hotel breakfast was not worth getting out of bed for. Finding the hotel is difficult and challenging, especially if you travel on foot from the train. Take the hotel's advice and carry small bags if you can.
Review 47:The rooms were fabulous. The atmosphere was great. The restaurant (a separate from the entity of the hotel) was wonderful.
Review 48:The breakfast was served in an area that could do with better lighting and decor, and the food was heavy on sweet selections.
Review 49:We had a very spacious room/suite dug right into the rock, which is part of a true Matera experience. It would not be a good choice for people with any kind of ambulatory problems.
Review 50:Taxi left us on street (closest he could get) with sign that the hotelwas 70 meters walk; which turned out to be over stony walkway and alluphill: a significant climb with the luggage. No one at the hotel wasavailable to help. Once arriving, it was two large sets of stairs moreto the room (no lift availalbe). This is for younger people with minimalluggage, not for people in their late 60's carrying 2 15-kilosuitcases. Also breakfast available only from 8:30 A.M., and no dinneravailable even though sign says Ristorante
Review 51:Certainly memorable, with large bedroom and inner door openingonto a cave!
Review 52:There are some building works currently going on at the hotel, new rooms being created. This wasn't too disruptive in itself but the area is scaffolded and covered in tarpaulin, rather unsightly and sticks out like a sore thumb whether close up or looking at the town from a distance. This will only be temporary though and the hotel is rightly popular.
Review 53:there will always be lots of steps whether you stay near the top or near the bottom of Matera but being opposite the ravine gave us lovely views and stopped us feeling hemmed in. The rooms were lovely and it was great to sit out on the terrace in the evening with a bottle of wine and watch swifts and swallows use the hotel courtyard as a Brans Hatch racing track and swoop endlessly round and round hunting insects.
Review 54:The owner herself was somewhat surly. The website does say that check in is between 15:30 and 21:00, however, it is not clear that the reception is literally not manned between 11:00 and 15:30. We arrived at the property with our bags at 14:30. We would have had no problem with having to wait for the rooms to become available, if we had been able to leave the bags in reception, but we had to stay with the bags until the owner arrived at 15:33. While the breakfast was good, but the service was poor - it was difficult to get waitress' attention, while the owner and receptionist seemed to consider it beneath their dignity to see to guests at the table.
Review 55:Wonderfully appointed rooms in a great location. The receptionists were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good. Although I say some negative things in the next text box, I do highly recommend a stay at Le Dodici Lune.
Review 56:The reception was closed when we arrived and we had to call someone to do the check in. Breakfast very Italian.
Review 57:We had booked the suite and was very satisfied.
Review 58:The cave room is generally with lower temperature and shower water is not hot enough when it was 0 degree outside
Review 59:AWESOME Sassi, You must go there once in a life time. Hotel location is good and easy to locate from the main church. Walkable distance from central station to the hotel, less than 30 min. People in Matera are very friendly and helpful. I was so lucky I could see snow during my stay
Review 60:Maybe would have liked boiled eggs at breakfast? Limited non sweet options.
Review 61:Friendliness of all staff. Also the location is as easy for parking as it gets in Matera. The location is wonderful for seeing the best sassi sights, but a little far (when walking in the cold with toddlers) from most restaurants, however the closest restaurant was also delicious. Very comfortable, clean and spacious rooms.
Review 62:the path and steps going up to the accomodation. Tell guests to take small and light suitcase. Breakfast could be better, cold croissant and heavy cakes, slice of cold pizza, need to improve.
Review 63:Bedroom was lovely, very big in the cave, clean and nice view. Very silent and slept very well.
Review 64:Parking is a huge problem and has to be away. GPS needed to locate hotel. Be in shape to climb MANY stone stairs. Wheeled luggage is a must for up and down.
Review 65:The town is the most unique on the planet. Staff was terrific and breakfasts were so good. We requested and were allowed to take food for hikes and travel. Room was large and even had a desk.
Review 66:The only staff we ever spoke to was reception. She had a bad attitude. The hotel room was far from the street and had to climb 300 stairs with heavy lugguage with no staff assistance. The room was beautiful. But misleading on the internet. Because of being a cave the room was very wet and had trouble sleeping due to the dampness
Review 67:That we were in Matera
Review 68:Very poor Breakfast without any fruit and any variety. Cold and tasteless coffee. disillusion in because the expectations regarding advertising. Before 8 in the morning the outside of the building works started without any concern with the guests
Review 69:The air conditioning was down and it was hot. There was nobody at night we could ask for some help about it. The TV was small and old and there were just 4 channels ( we tried to find some more but it was impossible). The door of the shower was broken. I little too expensive considering these problems we had.
Review 70:The location is awesome. The room was extremely clean and beautiful.
Review 71:Very hard to find the hotel location for the first timer. But if you go to 40.666182, 16.613418, you should find the hotel easier because there's direction to this hotel aka "Ristorante Le Dodici Lune".
Review 72:We thought we couldn't sleep in this "cave" room, but my family said she sleep very well. Aged TV? Never mind. Why bother watching TV if you have better landscape outside? And very nice staff.
Review 73:to much stairs you are recomended to leave suitcase in the car and bring with you only things for the night
Review 74:the service of the stuff was very good the room clean &comfortable breakfast very good location perfect
Review 75:Be prepared for a slightly damp feel to the room - it is a cave after all! This is no way detracted from the overall experience.
Review 76:The room was absolutely stunning and Matera itself such a beautiful and interesting town. The staff were very helpful and breakfast very good.
Review 77:The overall location requires walking a lot of ancient steps.
Review 78:The complete atmosphere. We had one small issue with the shower and the staff fixed it immediately! It was a marvel to, for a short time, live in a location once occupied thousands of years ago by mankind!
Review 79:Was full of history & amazing buildings, churches.
Review 80:I felt so at home in this hotel I hope to back some day.
Review 81:Reception wasn't always there when needed
Review 82:Rooms were brilliant
Review 83:If you go to Matera by train, you would call a taxi to this hotel. It is near impossible to go this hotel on foot from train station.
Review 84:Beds were too hard, but overall great.
Review 85:Very good would go again
Review 86:No bad experiences
Review 87:Location superb. Matera astonishing city.
Review 88:Everyone was helpful and our room was just beautiful. Hope to repeat one day.

Review 92:The breakfast
Review 93:Staff and location
Review 94:Cool place to stay. The room were very nice.
Review 95:Lots of steps
Review 96:Stunning cave based apartment, free parking
Review 97:Wonderful accommodations!
Review 98:No view but you step outside and have a breathtaking panorama.
Review 99:Very nice owner, helpful and giving guidance what to see and where to go.
Review 100:The room was large, clean and differente from whatever place I've been before.
Review 101:Very helpful staff and great location!
Review 102:Would have tried restaurant but out of season? Not a big negative
Review 103:Fantastic room
Review 104:Beautiful hotel an wonderful staff! Just get good directions especially if your driving.
Review 105:Umidità della camera Camera raggiungibile solo attraverso anguste scale esterne.

Review 109:Just to experience the life in the cave
Review 110:Extremely spacious rooms, friendly staff, tasty breakfast, great location. Would definately stay here again if I return to Matera.
Review 111:Really beautiful place.
Review 112:Breakfast
Review 113:difficult parking
Review 114:Location, bedroom, staff
Review 115:Car had to be parked at some distance
Review 116:Big room in the sassi. Very good wifi connection. Convenient location to walk around
Review 117:Almost impossible to find a parking spot; Rooms...hmmm... :(
Review 118:If one has heavy luggage it could be uncomfortable to climb all the beautiful otherwise stairs.
Review 119:Location, location, location for a reasonable price.
Review 120:Nothing!!
Review 121:This was an amazing hotel in the heart of Matera. We had specially requested one of the more traditional cave-like (sassi) rooms and were given an absolutely beautiful room - very pleased! Staff were extremely helpful and lovely. Breakfast was gorgeous with a lovely selection of pastries, cakes and focaccias. The whole city was just amazing and very fun to explore!
Review 122:The breakfast was very poor. Lukewarm coffee and just sweet breads, biscuits and croissants. I do not understand why the hotels do not do healthy breakfast. I asked for eggs and got them the second morning.
Review 123:The hotel was decorated very well and the room was very comfortable.
Review 124:1. Facility I booked twin beds and asked one more time to booking.com customer service, making sure of it. They replied with twin beds. But I arrived there, they gave me one double bed and an extra bed(very small, smaller than single bed. I asked them I booked twin beds room, but they said no more room left. And the room didn't look like booking page pics on the site. It was very unpleasant. 2. Internet not working I couldn't connect to internet. I asked them, now they told me the internet was not working. They said It had not worked from one day ago. he changed other router from the other room, but It still didn't work. and they said, 'sorry'. That was it.
Review 125:having experience of sleeping inside sassi(looks like)
Review 126:Nothing!
Review 127:We felt as if we were sleeping in a cave..just the experience we wanted. Close to outside of walled city parking. Great city to explore, gelato shops, great restaurants and shopping all without a car..loved it! Great staff!
