Reviews for Southern Cross Atrium Apartments
Review 1:Very poor mid stay "clean" of apartment - all they did was change the sheets and put out fresh towels - did not even replenish the tissues even though they had run out (we had a 12 night stay) no sweeping of the floor or any clean up of vanity basin or shower. Plus upon check in only one full roll of toilet paper and less than half on the roll left behind. Also - when they came to do the mid stay clean they turned up at 8.30 in the morning with no warning at all - so be aware of that - I thought it would be courtesy to do in house guests later in the day as when you are on holidays a lot of people - like us - do like to sleep in! The water pipes in the section of our building made a dreadful hammering noise every time anyone flushed the toilet or turned off a tap. Even throughout the night - not good if you are a light sleeper. Our apartment had the main kitchen hotplate stuck on high heat which made cooking almost impossible - and the hair drier in the bathroom was hanging off the wall. Upon checkout I was not even asked by the young man how we had enjoyed our stay and was everything ok - so I pointed out the fault with the hotplate, hair drier and told him about the very noisy water pipes. No apology, nothing. He just wrote it on a piece of paper. I would think after a 12 night stay they would at least be very courteous upon our departure. To add more angst, upon arriving home, I discovered I had accidentally left a really nice pair of shoes in the apartment. I called and was told that "house keeping found no lost property upon cleaning" and that "nothing had been handed in" - now these shoes had only been worn about three times - so I can't see house keeping throwing them out! So I can only assume they must have decided finders keepers. Not happy at all regarding this part of the experience.
Review 2:Very close to large shopping centre - also short walk to some restaurants however a bit far to walk to the Cairns esplanade area - however we had a hire car so this was not an issue for us. Pool area clean and tidy and good BBQ facilities.
Review 3:The maintenance man was rude .. ..our apartment was over driveway so alot of noise and too much light coming in bedroom the bar/restaurant was never open considering being over week of new year holidays
Review 4:Location was central and shops and public transport close by
Review 5:Having worked in a hotel for 7 years, I know that any person can have a bad day. However, the lady at reception is without doubt the rudest, most unhelpful person I have ever encountered. When we arrived, she stared blankly at my girlfriend and I. She did not welcome us, it seemed as if we were disrupting her from whatever else she had on (there was no other customer in the office). The night before checking out we left our suitcases in the office. Admittedly we were a few minutes (10 at most) late coming down but the male staff (who I'm guessing is the owner), seemed pretty agitated that he had to unlock the door to put the 2 suitcases inside. When we were leaving the next morning, we had left the keys in the drop box (we had a tour planned for early morning and didn't want to be charged a late check out fee). The same woman who had dealt with us before was back and seemed to be annoyed that she had to get up and walk all 10 metres to collect them. She never asked if we enjoyed our stay, if we needed transport (which we did). As we were leaving we witnessed said woman be just as rude and unhelpful to a group of girls checking out. Also a side note, as we didn't have a credit card, we had to put down a $300 bond on the room (so make sure you have that handy if you are using a debit card).
Review 6:Complex as a whole is lovely, the pool is well kept and the location is ideal. Room was very clean, but as a serviced apartment it will only be cleaned if you stay longer than a week. We stayed 5 nights and ran out of toilet paper, and given our dealings with the staff we thought it would be easier to buy our replacement from Coles than ask for another.
Review 7:Got many bites in the room for 2 nights. Could be due to bugs in the room. It is definitely not a pleasant experience to be itchy for for more than a week. Dishwashing powder and washing powder are not replenished. Air con in room is noisy.
Review 8:Walking distance to supermarket and city center.
Review 9:gym was small and not much equipment. reception closes early. sometimes guests can be a bit noisy at night
Review 10:central location. close to shopping mall and restaurants. excellent pool amenities.
Review 11:Beds are a bit hard & could do with curtains in bedroom as wooden blinds let the morning light in.
Review 12:Rooms were good size with good amenities. Close to shopping. Ten minute walk to esplanade.
Review 13:Must remember to always book on the ground floor. My husband has a knee implant and the stairs would have been a bit of a problem.
Review 14:Very homely. Stayed on the ground floor so was very good for us.
Review 15:Extremely hard split king bed, often fell down the middle and the tiles on the floor would have been softer.
Review 16:Good Central Location, Nice Pool, Nice Clean & Tidy. Pretty good value for money if you booked ahead.
Review 17:Few members of staff we found were very rude when we required help!
Review 18:We arrived late and there was a man to let us in that we found very nice and at the end of our stay we were leaving at 4am and that wasn't a problem! I found that very accomadating.
Review 19:- awful smell, every time when we opened the door to our apartment we were hit by terrible stench. You have to do something with this smell. - apartment definitely needs to be renovated. The furniture are very old, like from the previous epoch. - plastic glasses. How to drink wine in the plastic??? - apartment wasn't very clean when we arrived. One towel was dirty. - the best one: during the last day of our stay we got the call from the housekeeping manager that he has to check if the apartment is in the correct condition. It was disgusting and rude. What we could destroyed in such awfull apartment??? - the young guy on the reception was not very kind.
Review 20:Close to the shopping centre
Review 21:Soon as I walked in to reception it was clear it was all about money money money!! Yes of course you have to pay, but I didn't even get a basic 'hello how are you today?' It was all about taking payment as soon as possible! They also take a $500 deposit from you if you don't have a credit card which I was unaware of! (Didn't read t&c's so not sure if they stated that already on booking!?) A very large sum of money but a hotel policy is a hotel policy I guess but again the way the member of staff acted towards me made me feel like I was a criminal and that he didn't trust me staying in the hotel! If only he had been a little bit more courteous I might have enjoyed my stay a little better and not felt like he was treating me as a criminal! Very very poor customer service! Possibly the worst I have ever experienced in a hotel!! On checking out I also had very little communication with another member of staff, not even a basic 'How was your stay?' And for that reason I will never return here!!
Review 22:Good clean room. very central, right next to Cairns central! Didn't use the pools but they looked very good and well maintained!
Review 23:There are fleas in the wardrobe. I put cloth in the net trays inside the wardrobe and got fleas bites around wrists, ankles on the 2nd day when change clothes, and the rest of days I got bitten all over face, neck, back, arms, thighs...this situation really ruined my holidays! I told staff when checked out, they denied it at first place
Review 24:Kitchen, bathroom, air conditioner
Review 25:I found the male receptionist to be unhelpful on arrival and made no effort to check if our room was ready despite me asking him to. I explained that I just needed to change out of my jeans into shorts as the weather was incredibly hot and humid - he said I should use the public toilets near the pool. This would have meant unpacking my large suitcase in the public toilets to find d a pair of shorts, which I was not happy to do. He offered no alternative and wouldn't check if our room was ready, despite us only arriving 1 hour before check-in. Also we had to leave a $500 visa deposit on the room as we no longer use credit cards. And when we asked for a clean set of single sheets we were charged $6 ! We never had breakfast at the cafe on site because it's very overpriced. Just across the road is multiple cafe's in the shopping mall which are far cheaper.
Review 26:Being next to the pool on the ground floor was ideal with children. Plus enclosed veranda for eating and relaxing.
Review 27:Felt unsafe. Poor door system, one door to two rooms which is scary if you're next to someone dangerous which we were. We couldn't leave at 3am when screaming lady who was getting mistreated by her man came in. We were unable to contact after hours emergency number as the number wasn't calling out. The staff didn't support us, didn't seem like they wanted to believe us as and no refund was given which under these circumstances I think it should have been. Very poor.
Review 28:Swimming pools very small, not suitable for relaxing, few sun beds. Balcony viewed onto car park.
Review 29:Deluxe flat, everything we needed. Close to amenities and esplanade.
Review 30:Pool fab for children, rooms comfy, good facilities to self cater and wash clothes etc. good walk to town and really near shopping centre for supermarket etc, safe car parking
Review 31:No mention of the $500 deposit needed if you dont have a credit card which slows down your check out time, as they need to check your room and organize a refund. Everything else was great.
Review 32:Great location! Great room! Enjoyed my stay.
Review 33:Being told to move from Bbq Area or the light was being switched off whilst dinner was being cooked. We found that ignorant and wasn't given any flexibility, after a big day out.
Review 34:Liked the Bbq area and Swimming Pool/Spa.
Review 35:The hotel sent no instruction regarding late check-in. Resulted in us not finding the entrance in the evening. Too small for three and too many stairs to second floor with heavy cases.
Review 36:Clean and well equipped.
Review 37:We were very surprised with location and the rooms were a comfortable size, and the closed in balcony, made it very private also. The facilities at the property were fantastic - pools, gym, bbq's. Will definitely return.
Review 38:Staffs are normal and after hours response from staff is bit below average (bit arrogant).
Review 39:Location is best and can go around easily. Kitchen and cooking wares are well supplied if you intend to cook your own food. Room is nice but location of room should be specified before if you want a better view room.
Review 40:WiFi is not free
Review 41:we opted for a unit with a full kitchen, clean and modern facilities, able to watch TV in bed, ample parking, centrally located, reception efficient and helpful
Review 42:A bit of a hike to the Cairns restaurant strip through a fairly dodgy area, wouldn't like to walk at night alone.
Review 43:great swimming pool facilities pleasant room and outlook, close to Cairns Central shopping centre.
Review 44:Stairs. There is no elevator and carrying heavy suitcases up two flights of stairs was nearly impossible for us. Didn't like the balcony over the car park.
Review 45:The location was good. Close to supermarket
Review 46:nothing I didn't like
Review 47:As we are elderly, I like the location of these apartments because they are so close to Railway station.we were very happy with the cleanliness and the staff were very helpful. I would recommend Southern Cross Atrium.
Review 48:Went to check in and was told i had to pay a 300 deposit that was not advised about before booking because i didn't have a credit card so they canceled the room i came up with the 300 as i hav3 a 9 week old and didn5 want to drag her around looking for a new place at 3 in the afternoon they told me had to make a new booking 5 mins later then charged an extra 40 for the rooms and tried charging me 500 deposit then the staff laughed at me and told me at least i will stay more in my room now i was down for doctor and hospital appointments i was not impressed we got our room it was tidy but front gate opend every half hour baby woke up all night she usually sleeps right through people played loud music and the stench from the bins filled our room safe to say i will never stay or recomend this place again we stayed for 2 nights i would have rather camped out me and my partner where furious
Review 49:The air con
Review 50:- No separation of recyclable and non recyclable wastes - the kitchenette would be better with an electric oven
Review 51:Nice beautiful pools, lots of parking spaces, very clean and is very close to a shopping centre
Review 52:When staff took extra $500 in case of damages which was most of our holiday money we are both over 60 we were nervous to use anything in case we broke something,my wife had bad knees from a operation and had to walk up 3 flights off stairs. We were not game enough to ask for another room in case we lost our money.
Review 53:Close to shops
Review 54:Gym equipment has seen better days but works on a basic level. Could be noisy on upper level as underneath airport traffic route, no planes flew overnight when I was there
Review 55:Handy location to shops, cinema and supermarkets. Friendly staff, asked for a room on the ground floor as difficult for me to walk up stairs, booked with less than 24hours notice and was given a ground floor room. Nice pools. Safe.
Review 56:Bed very hard and uncomfortable. Wifi slow and expensive. Toilet ran continously.
Review 57:Close to cbd and shopping mall. Full facilities, kitchen, laundry and several swimming pools. Good value.
Review 58:The layout of the apartment was perfect. The bed was really comfortable and enjoyable. I will definitely be coming back again to stay. I will recommend to anyone I know travelling to cairns in the near future
Review 59:When I booked it I had the superior room which was the one I didn't want .So I want down to reception and asked if I could change it.The receptionist said no problem and changed it for the Deluxe which was by the pool so it maid our holiday.
Review 60:I was unhappy to originally be put - for a 7 day working stay - in an apartment which was a long way from reception and also backed onto the loading bay of Officeworld with its loading dock door constantly being activated. Cleaning was also very noisy in the mornings so it was not possible to work in the apartment, which I would have liked to have been able to do.
Review 61:I appreciated being able to change rooms. Good apartment overall.
Review 62:Room 1770 close to railway line and pool pump room so therefor quiet noisy plus not a sunny aspect.
Review 63:Convenient for airport (24$ taxi), near to town centre facilities including a very close supermarket. 24 hr access, good for early morning arrivals.
Review 64:Limited reception hours. Absorbitant internet charges. 4 flights of stairs to room. Slow inefficient reception. Can be noisy.
Review 65:Convenient location
Review 66:Internet would not work in our room.Had to pay for wifi, most hotels do not charge.Had to argue with reception over internet they said I had used my full quota when I did not use it, as I couldn't.Balcony looked out over ajoining building which had the lights on all night/weekend shining into the room. We are not tourists ,living in the Gulf, and would expect a little more care. Will most likely not go there again. We booked there as the rest of Cairns was booked out.
Review 67:The lack of a DVD player and no option to rent one. We were told it's because we were in a studio - why? Punishment for choosing a studio?
Review 68:The convenience of the location, nice room, very clean and comfortable.
Review 69:Location of room top floor no elavators carry bags from ground floor to second level. King size bed very uncomfortable 2 king single join together to make king size bed it was horrible.
Review 70:Staff
Review 71:Nothing in particular, perhaps distance to Esplanade and beach. It was a6 block walk, but multiple restaurants and bars en-route. Really not abig thing, unless you want to be right in the heart of that scene.
Review 72:Full (but small) one bedroom apartment, kitchen, laundry, dishwasher, etc. Hide-a-bed took up most of the space in the sitting room, butcertainly functional for 3 or 4 travellers.Check-in was easy and quick and staff were very helpful with information, etc. There are pools on-site, but we didn't use. Large shopping centre was right next door, with multiple stores, including Coles supermart, K-Mart and theatre complex.
Review 73:Absolutely horrendous banging sounds, all through the night, (very broken sleep ) pipes in walls need attention if anyone wants sleep in the room we had
Review 74:The relaxing pools and choice areas including BBQ facilities
Review 75:Woken by afire alarm early Hours one morning - no explanations given. Also someone either staying or working there who had a really noisy motor/motorbike that revved up every morning again really early. More loungers/seating near the pool area would have been good. Only one bedside in master bedroom Which was annoying.
Review 76:Spacious, plenty of parking, walking distance to main part of town.
Review 77:Office staff were curt and somewhat disinterested, a bit unusual for a holiday destination? My elderly mother arrived the day before us and was booked into a top floor room, up three flights of stairs, while she managed, the staff could have made it easier on her by allocating her a ground floor room.
Review 78:Nice pool and all facilities, convenient location.
Review 79:Noisy, next to train station and in the flight path of airport. No mad service so no towels changed for 5 days. Take own rubbish out. Small fridge, limited hanging space for long term stay.
Review 80:Location of room next to pool
Review 81:We were given a ground floor room with a balcony that faced the carpark. Very noisWould not y in the early morning when motor bikes were leaving.
Review 82:Room was comfortable and clean. Good sized bathroom.
Review 83:Very noisy establishment, with parking area close to the rooms and no sound proofing. The residence has semi permanent tenants, with a Harley Davidson motor cycle starting off the noisy procession of vehicles each day at 0600, followed by the garbage truck which must enter the property a couple of times and lift the rubbish bins above the truck and proceed to shake the hell out the bins to make as much noise as they possibly can. The bed was two singles pushed together and uncomfortable. The internet is a rip off and costs a lot of money per 500mb and is only for good for one device. Be careful not to dirty your towels, it will cost you $2 per towel to replace them.
Review 84:Convenient location to shopping centre and railway station. Nice bbq area and pools (although quite a few leaves in the pool).
Review 85:Very pricey. Thought I was getting a 2 bedroom apartment, it's more like adjoining apartment and self catering room
Review 86:Location is good - next to Cairns Central Shopping Centre
Review 87:To far from entertainment area, no public transport from entertainment area to this hotel. Other thing we were booked for 3 nights stay but got only 4 sachet of coffee between 2 of us.Bed was bit hard. There was beeping of reversing vehicles early in the morning outside our window this was docking area.
Review 88:Close to shopping centre.
Review 89:Looked after an older guest very well, arranging ground floor accommodation. I often stay here and so I arranged for my mother to stay and they looked after her well. It's in a Central location.
Review 90:Only thing we would mention is the noise coming from the street due to road works occurring every morning right on 7am that rang out through the whole site and room we had
Review 91:Great location; great access to premises; pool area fantastic, friendly staff
Review 92:We lived in NO.11 apartment, don't know whether if everyone has the same problem that is the bathroom always smell really bad.
Review 93:All things are good(Except the smell in toilet), service is well, men are kind and friendly. Cairns has a small town, there is a Coles near the apartment, and about 500m there will be a Woolworths.
Review 94:We are super dissapointed with this hotel. As we arrived late they gave us a room in front of a very busy road, by far one of the worse rooms. As the apartments are very closed to a mall, we heard all the traffic of the trucks during the night. We asked for a change of room and finally they agreed but we had to pay 35$ for cleanning the appartment, when it was not our fault that they gave us a bad room. They tryied to cheat us telling us that this was a decission of the ownwer, and we felt that they treated us like stupids, specially Karen from reception, she was super rude and disgusting with us Estamos super decepcionados con el trato que nos dio este hotel.
Review 95:Nothing, we don't recommend those appartments at all. Nada, no recomendamos este hotel
Review 96:Needed extraction fan for cooking. .as smells tended to linger...noise carried from downstairs. .difficult to rest in afternoon.
Review 97:Location was great..bed was comfy
Review 98:3am wake-ups from Council street cleaner. Then 5:45 am wake-ups from turds with Harley Davidson motorcycles exhaust explosive take-offs! Suggest plant some screening trees to absorb some of the echo and noise. Useless Cairns Council access to Water St from south via the shopping centre carpark.
Review 99:Convenient to the railway station. Plenty of room. Well ventilated.
Review 100:We mislaid one of the room keys but were not told when booking in that there is a $250 penalty for losing a key. We feel that fee is so excessive that guests should be clearly warned in advance in order to be extra careful.
Review 101:Well supplied with pools and entertainment areas (but very noisy at weekends). Handy to shopping centre and about two blocks from restaurants. Walk to seafront reasonable (about 20 minutes).
Review 102:Charges for local phone calls. There is no way to tell from the phone number which ones will attract expensive pulse charges. The four Jacuzzis are not heated. The internet service is difficult to connect onto, is slow and at times intermittent and costs extra.
Review 103:Everything in the room was in good working order. Clean fully furnished kitchen. Quiet place especially at night. Very close to the Cairns City Center Shopping Center. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 104:Pool not heated, because of shadowing from buildings, water very cold.
Review 105:well fitted out kitchen, clean, comfortable, an outside area to sit in near the pool.
Review 106:Nothing.
Review 107:Stay here! This place was amazing value and made for a perfect stay. The rooms have everything you need and the pools are just lovely. The location is ideal for exploring cairns and the staff was super helpful.
Review 108:WIFI could have been free Noise of low flying aircraft landing every few minutes was disturbing
Review 109:Close to shopping centre and CBD Swimming pools Enclosed parking space
Review 110:The bed was 2 singles pushed together. The kitchen wasnt good to cook in due to lack of utensils. The deposit was extravagant. The booking procedure was painful.
Review 111:Sauna was great
Review 112:Wifi is pretty expensive and not very reliable.
Review 113:Good CBD location right at Cairns Central. Nice and clean apartment equipped with everything you need.
Review 114:Would have been nice if they came to take out the trash every few days
Review 115:Perfect size apartment, and the bed was very comfortable, which was our priority
Review 116:I used the gym, which had four cardio machines, great! However, I would have liked more than one pair of dumbbells, which were only 4kg. Some utensils, such as a chopping board, would have been handy in the room too.
Review 117:Friendly staff. Nice, comfy bed. Clean. Access to pool and BBQ area.
Review 118:Our room was extremely noisy (apart from lacking any light form outside) due to the water heating , which apparently was located in our room... We complained after having a hard time to sleep and they wanted to charge us 30$ for changing the room, which we of course denied to pay. In addition, they said that they had these complaints before, so instead of fixing it, they just keep taking more clients ... Very bad experience, I would not recommend it at all.
Review 119:Bed hard & doona between sheets look old & stained
Review 120:Lovely well appointed apartments. Handy items in reception for purchase. Helpful friendly staff.
Review 121:Mould in shower. Getting luggage up the Stairs was ok for us but I could see that might be a problem for some.
Review 122:Handy location - walking distance to Esplanade and shops closeby. Balcony was nice with view of pool. Pool was clean. Swivel TV a good idea. Plenty of room to move about. Good BBQ facilities too.
Review 123:We looked out on a car park at the main entrance and it was often very noisy, laundry pick up, rubbish pick up, tour vans etc. Pity that the restaurant wasn't open.
Review 124:It was handy to the city, shop, water front etc, we could walk everywhere. Apartment was a good size with everything we needed. The bed was very comfortable. Having a washing machine just outside the apartment was great.
Review 125:Apartments were really close to the main shopping centre in Cairns which made it really convenient to pick up some groceries and prepare a meal in the self catering apartment. We had a studio apartment and it was big enough for the two of us. We stayed on the top floor and I really liked having to go up the stairs, bit of extra exercise!! The beds were two singles pushed together but man were they comfy!!! We had a hire car but walked to the marina for our reef trips and it was only a 15-20 minute walk so really convenient.
Review 126:AUD$10 a day for the internet is unacceptable. It was free everywhere else we stayed. Also a cabinet on both sides of the bed would be nice.
Review 127:Sunny north facing. Modern clean
Review 128:There was only one downside and that was noise mainly from noisy neighbours and residents with loud cars, motor bikes starting them up at 5 in the morning!
Review 129:The best part about these apartments is their close proximity to everything!
Review 130:none. Train line nearby but no problem with noise.
Review 131:Location,for shops, bars, restaurants and trips for surrounding area. B.B.Q facilities and good for two couples to have own bathroom
Review 132:Only problem was the freezer didn't work properly so no ice but other than that everything was great
Review 133:Good location. Only a 10-15 min walk to main town and only 2 min walk to main shops. Had all the facilities we needed including microwave, oven and tablewear. Staff were great
Review 134:I didn't like what it was near eg. Train behind the apartments, some nights there where big groups hanging around the apartments and there's a vacant land opposite and I saw homeless staying there and sinking piss sometimes felt unsafe walking back to the apartment, one staff member there with red hair was really rude and not welcoming Location was close to everything but didn't feel safe there Also I paid a fair bit you would think wifi would be included in the cost but you had to pay extra which I found ridiculous seeming we paid a lot already
Review 135:What I liked was the pools
Review 136:No privacy,Electric appliances need to be replaced, sofa seat very uncontainable, problems with new born flys every night stragle getting them aut ......
Review 137:Location was convenien
Review 138:The one bedroom apartment is more like a studio and is quite small. We were disappointed that there was no outlook from the balcony as the apartment was situated between two other apartment blocks. Also the apartment was located too close to the road and the traffic noise was problematic when sitting on the balcony or trying to sleep. Our apartment didn't resemble the beautiful outlook over the pools as depicted in the photographs.
Review 139:The location - walking distance to supermarket and the main city and esplanade in Cairns.
Review 140:Unit 1098, tropical setting, private balcony with timber shutters overlooking main pool, spacious floor plan, off street car parking and good location
The Fine Print
