Reviews for Caveoso Hotel
Review 1:Very difficult to find the street leading to the hotel. The GPS address is not helpful as it leads to a one way street in the wrong direction. The desk clerk was bland. The bathroom supplies were insufficient (a tiny bar of soap and small shampoo for two adults for two days).
Review 2:This remarkable hotel is in a great location in the heart of Caveoso. The hotel room is beautiful and unique. The breakfast was wonderful.
Review 3:A welcome which at least makes you feel welcome. We felt we were disturbing the peace and quiet as there were no other guests visible. A couple of questions were not answered, we had been charged double for the room which we paid in advance and it felt like it was our fault! Management: you will win by being a little apologetic and not use the CC machine as an excuse.
Review 4:The nice room, the fabulous view to the Sassi, and general location. Cool!
Review 5:Not a negative, but just a suggestion, be sure to wear good walking shoes as you walk pathways, and climb stairs discovering this amazing city.
Review 6:This is such a beautiful and unique region of Italy. The Caveoso Hotel & staff were wonderful! Needless to say, when booking this Hotel we were curious about how it would be to stay in a 'cave'. Well, being a 'cave dweller' was an absolute delight. Our 'room' was spacious and luxurious with all amenities. Great!
Review 7:There was no shower stall in the bathroom. Using the hand held shower contributed to water all over the bathroom floor. Towels where flimsy and not very absorbent.
Review 8:Wonderful room and very helpful staff.
Review 9:Cleaning staff needs a course or raise. 3 stars does not mean no vacuuming needed or a free pass to leave all surfaced higher than 170cm in-dusted. Also 3eur can buy you a spray that can remove mold from corners of the tub. Lastly as one of the few rooms with actual windows, it would benefit to have them cleaned.
Review 10:Location is excellent and staff friendly. It seems we were very lucky to have room 9 which has a balcony. Although the hotels here are famous for their rooms being an actual cave, number 8 had no windows at all and their airco/de-humidifier on non stop and the door open to a distinct musty smell we did not share. Breakfast with Pane di Matera was lovely
Review 11:Bathroom damp, plaster peeling - ineffective extractor fan and black mould around shower.
Review 12:Stunning location to explore the Sassi although initial access challenging and parking some distance away. Excellent breakfast.
Review 13:Water penetrated the roof of our room during a prolonged rain shower. Dont stay in room 11. We had to move rooms at 12.00 midnight as a result. We were given an alternative room which was much bigger and it was fine. No real recognition of the hassle this caused us and although we didnt push for any recompense, none was offered. Prospective bookers should be aware that caves are damp and although they are fitted with dehumidifiers the rooms have a damp feel.
Review 14:The idea of staying in a cave hotel in Matera. Good breakfast and excellent breakfast staff.
Review 15:Misleading info re street parking nearby;it's not allowed. You have to park at multi-storey Sassi Parking and walk down for around 10 mins. Not all rooms in caves. Bedbugs we think;previous spots of bloodstains on sheet, several bites.
Review 16:Being in the heart of the Sassi. Very atmospheric and so unique. Lady at breakfast was very helpful and cheerful.
Review 17:The cave was very humid. After 24 hours everything felt damp. On one occasion when I walked in my glasses steamed up! The breakfast was the worst I can remember from any hotel. Fruit, grapes. Cereal , cornflakes. Meat, salami. Cheese, none. Good pastries. The milk was dispensed grudgingly from behind a counter. The proprietor has NO social graces. He didn't raise his eyes from the counter when we handed the keys in to leave. The info on the hotel says free parking. There is NO parking at all for this hotel. We were directed by the proprietor to the municipal multi storey car park well away from the hotel, this cost €21 for 2 nights. We discovered from other residents later that there is free parking on the streets adjacent to the multi storey. He could have told us that. He should not be running a hotel!!!
Review 18:It was a great experience to stay in a cave. The bedroom and bathroom were very spacious and clean. Minimal products though. The location was good.
Review 19:Great Location in the Old Town Matera...very central and everything was within walking distance. We wanted to stay in a cave room and we got what we wanted, very VERY big and spacious room, not modern or fancy, but was great to have so much space and be in a cave with the exposed stone walls, very different to anywhere we have stayed before. The surprise Jacuzzi bath more than made up for the lack of walk in shower. We were very comfortable & happy in this room...with a small outdoor seating area.
Review 20:Caves can be humid. Need to frequently change out the humidifier reservoir (every 6-8 hrs). A few extra chairs or other interior furniture would be useful.
Review 21:Excellent location. Very helpful staff. Best shower ever (my companion).
Review 22:One of the rooms was damp and we required to change rooms the next day. The premium charged for a suite was not justified. Access to the hotel location was difficult and it would have helped to have precise instructions to get there. Car parking was quite a distance away (valet parking would be good!)
Review 23:The overall appearance of the hotel. Breakfast was good and the service excellent.
Review 24:The staff was very rude, not helpful. We felt like we were a nuisance to them. I would never recommend this hotel. Try to find another hotel!
Review 25:The location. The breakfast server was nice.
Review 26:We were amazed at the quality of the rooms an the setting was beautiful. Breakfast was really good as it had just been brought in from the local bakers. Location was excellent to get around Matera.
Review 27:the location . No one explain how to reach the hotel and hard to find the location. I tried to contact the property in advance and ask for assistance without sucess. The guy on the receiption was very unpolite. No one help with the lugage. The room has not been ready on time. there is a mould in the bath and water oul faling down from the ceiling.
Review 28:the woman responsible for breakfast is very polite.
Review 29:The breakfast has room for improvement
Review 30:The deco is amazing and the common terraces so nice. The bar includes some great wines and staff always willing to help. While doesn't have its own parking place you can do that a few meters away. The location is unbeatable. Sleeping in a cave was the utmost experience, in particular as deco was top notch.
Review 31:This is an interesting hotel but it needs a professional running it - It feels like the owners are only interested in making as much money as possible. Guests seem an inconvenience.
Review 32:A very good location.
Review 33:Parking was impossible Wifi was poor Room did not feel clean Dehumidifier in room made a loud noise at night
Review 34:Great location Staff were quite helpful
Review 35:The views were fantastic. The location was very good. It was a different style room which we loved.
Review 36:Very nice place to stay the time is beautiful. Accommodations were so unique it's a nice fine to join me at the town of Matera .
Review 37:We were happy with everything. The breakfast was good by Italian standards.
Review 38:We have a balcony and the view was excellent. Pleasantly cool in the evening after a blisteringly hot day.
Review 39:Breakfast was a little sparse, felt a little awkward asking for a second coffee. Plastic cups for juice! Humidity is obviously a problem given the nature of location, but that's understandable. Maybe slightly overpriced. Location not so good for families with young children but not fault of hotel.
Review 40:Ladies who worked at breakfast & cleaned rooms exceptionally nice. Rooms were spacious.
Review 41:Bathroom could have been ventilated better, but, hey, it's (almost) a cave, difficult to do I guess.
Review 42:Well our room had a couple of small caves in it. Mini dressing rooms, or bag or dog storage. Oh no pets that's right.....Very centrally situated, clean and tidy, adequate breakfast, fridge. Hotel was all that you expected. Good! Parking could not be on site for any hotel here, but we found a park and the young guy checking us in went out and arranged with the police to let others park in areas normally off limits during the day. So, all help given in that regard.
Review 43:Finding the way to the hotel with a car is a nightmare. Best first to park away from the old town, get a map and ask the way in to the old town. Parking on the cliff edge is probably always full in season so do not necessarily believe the hotel when it says that parking is available 50m away. There are many steps up to the hotel so you have to be fit to get your luggage to your room. You might have to walk a long way from some car park.
Review 44:The position with a stunning view of old Matera. Cool very comfortable room with no design faults at all.
Review 45:Should be expected as it is a cave, but it is rather damp in the room.
Review 46:Very cool to stay in a room that is carved out of a cave. Large room with good lighting.
Review 47:That I only booked 2 nights. We would have loved to stay way longer!
Review 48:The friendliness of the staff (especially Rosina at breakfast) although cannot fault any of the staff! The excellent location; it really could not get much better situated in the stunning San Pietro square. The really comfy bed in room 10B. The relaxed vibe to the place was perfect!
Review 49:Wish internet connection was better but they were working to improve the connection
Review 50:Love everything, the experience staying in a cave was just amazing. Highly recommend. We stayed one night but there is so much to see in Matera, two nights would have been better!
Review 51:the day manager or possibly owner, a man, was rude, was not helpful, gave us inaccurate restaurant info. The female that checked us in was great, but she quit that day because the manager was so abusive to her. The breakfast lady was also rude, and she was not happy about making breakfast coffee, as was her job, so we had to go to the bar to try to get coffee and she was even more unpleasant. So never staying there again...stay away.....
Review 52:location
Review 53:The young lad on reception was very good, one of the other men friendly but not so good and just hope the last one is not on duty when you stay there.
Review 54:Fun to stay in a cave
Review 55:It was very difficult to drive to the hotel (the GPS send us to streets that were not allowed to traffic or to stairs). There were no parking place available close to the hotel.
Review 56:The hotel is very nice, clean, in the heart of the Caveoso Sassi. The location is great.
Review 57:When we arrived the roads were blocked because of a Christmas pageant which lasted for 4 nights. I wish they would have warned us and given more help on how to get to the hotel
Review 58:Staff were quick to help us, except when we first were trying to find the hotel. Once we were checked in all was fine.
Review 59:The hotel staff was very nice and the hotel is spacious with gathering areas both inside and out on the terrace. A great feature. Our room was on the upper level with great views. Breakfast was typical and the staff was delightful and charming. We stayed in Matera for 1 day and another day would have been great. Great location and restaurants
Review 60:When we arrived, there was nobody at the desk to check anybody in and when it was time for check out, a part time person was there who nothing about the procedure. She was pleasant at least. The worst part was the fact that they overcharged us in the end! All in all, we made a mistake chosing that hotel in Matera. There were many other ones that were so much better. It looked a whole lot better than it was and there was litterally no one minding the store!!!!
Review 61:The only thing that I liked was the breakfast and the cappuccino! My room was just ok.
Review 62:What is the point of advertising and accessible room when it is not accessible getting to it. There are stairs from the parking area to the hotel.
Review 63:We loved staying in the beautiful cave section of Matera
Review 64:Took a while to warm up to the hotel owner. His wife was a joy in the morning, but he was a bit of a scrooge when we arrived.
Review 65:This was truly a a unique experience to sleep in the old town in a room carved from limestone. We had to do it.
Review 66:The shower water was non existant. It was low presser to no water at all. The room was very damp even with a dehumidifier running all the time. There appeared to be mold on the walls and ceiling. The wifI was very slow and hard to stay connected so I could not book the next night. And breakfest was almost monexistant. 8 to 10 was the time, at 8:45 there was hardly anything left and no replenishment. He just looked at the table and walked away. People continued to come in to the room and there was nothing for them to eat but a few sweets. I got the last slice of ham. But other than that, it was ok. Oh, I travel to Italy every year for the last 19 years so I know what to expect. I do not recommend this place.
Review 67:The location was great, right in the heart of the Sassi.
Review 68:Not much...except that the pressure of the hot water in the bathroom could have been better.
Review 69:The location, very close to free parking (not easy in Sassi di Matera). Lovely and cosy room partially in a grotto. Nice staff.
Review 70:This place is very hard to find! We had a rental car and it took us almost 3 hours to find this hotel once we reached Matera. None of the streets are marked! Even some of the main streets are not marked with their name. We had a map but we were told we could not drive into the Sassi. Once we finally did find the street ( a nice young man with a car told us to follow him and he would get us to the correct street) the hotel made sure that we had a place to park in the Sassi!
Review 71:We adored the Sassi and all of the beautiful places there. The red wine was really good and we toured a wonderful set of caves that were made to look like it did when people lived there at the turn of the century. We toured one of the Rupestrian churches and enjoyed seeing the frescoes on the walls.
Review 72:Good location with free parking. Breakfast was very nice and our room had a lovely view over the church and square. A good base for exploring the sassi areas.
Review 73:To say that the room wasn't clean is an understatement!!! I had to clean the bathroom before we could use it.There were hairs and crud in the bath and sink drains that obviously hadn't been cleaned in a long time.Dust all over every bathroom surface. We stayed 2 nights so I left the evidence from the drains for the cleaning staff to see, hoping they would at least clean our room properly the next day.No such luck, the floors were dirty and we didn't get our towels changed. The management apologised the next day What a shame that such a wonderful, special place is let down by the cleaning staff. The management need to solve the problem
Review 74:Fantastic location in the "sassi" area of Matera, close to all the important sites.A very special experience staying in a reconstructed cave. The room had been carefully planned, comfortable bed and large bathroom with whirlpool bath. The lady who served us at breakfast was very nice, smiling and helpful,a real gem.
Review 75:Very poor location with difficult access. No staff to help with luggage up a very rough path and up very steep steps to the rooms. The Caveoso is at best should be classed as a bed and breakfast. There are no facilites to cook food and no kitchen. The breakfast comes from plastic packs of ham and cheese. There is no parking for a car and the local population resent visitors to the extent of vandalising cars. The rooms are more like prison cells with no view outside and the seating area outside only looks onto derelict buildings. I would not recommend this bed and breakfast or Matera in general to anyone.
Review 76:Have difficulty finding anything to say that was likeable. The bed was very good and the bathroom adequate
Review 77:Very very humid even though there were two dehumidifiers and one air conditioning units. We stayed only one night because of this. Also, mold on walls.
Review 78:Uniqueness
Review 79:A somewhat more modern hair dryer might be good though the one there works. Wireless never seemed to work for me but I did not miss it a bit. It seemed to be working for other guests though.
Review 80:The view from room 9 was exquisite, the staff was extremely friendly and I slept extremely well.
Review 81:Loud air conditioner and dehumidification machine. Door of shower room can't be completely closed. Not easy to find the hotel and parking area.
Review 82:Excellent room and high cost performance. Old Sassi style room. Location to enjoy nice Sassi area.
Review 83:We lost hot water. There wasn't enough electric power to plug in two pieces of electronics. It kept blowing the fuses. My adapter burned! There was no protein for for breakfast.
Review 84:Staying in a cave was an experience.
Review 85:Driving and parking are a challenge. However, our host told us where the free parking was located.
Review 86:The hospitality was A+. The breakfast was fresh and delicious. The views from our room were breath taking. Centrally located. Our stay was magical.
Review 87:A lot of humidity in the room. The floor was not clean at all. Internet service in the room never worked after requesting the service to be fixed.
Review 88:Location.
Review 89:The humidity in the room was unbearable. The sheets was wet along with the bedding. A humidifier was in the room but did not dry it out.
Review 90:The room was really cool! So different and unique. The room was also very spacious with high end designer furniture. I would describe the room as fashionable.
Review 91:Breakfast was weak, pizza and croissants basically. Some juice and water. More options would be preferable.
Review 92:The location, the type of room and the general setup in the rooms.
Review 93:The man at reception is extremely unpleasant - there was no help offered with carrying the bags up the many steps - internet doesnt work - towels, etc werent changed - there is no parking onsite as indicated on their website - we were told it was ok to park the car down the road & got a parking ticket - wish I had read the other reviews & stayed somewhere else
Review 94:quite central
Review 95:Travelling with my elderly mother who needs aid of walking stick was a challenge with uneven rock footpaths and stairs to climb near the hotel but we enjoyed the experience just the same
Review 96:Loved close proximity to important sites if the town and caves
Review 97:We arrived in a torrential downpour but the kindness of the manager and beautiful hotel gave us a sunny feeling. There was a mistake on my booking and the manager thought I wanted one bed. I explained that I was traveling with my adult son and by the time we unloaded our suitcases he arranged a very comfortable extra bed in the room. The room is so unique and took my breath away. We entered a lower level entryway with a cavelike feeling and then up the stairs was a very large bedroom with high ceiling. Even in the pouring rain the view was fabulous. In fact it is one of my best pictures. Double doors open to a nice size balcony but because of the inclement weather we were not able to make use of it. It looked even nicer than the photos on the website. Be sure to request a room with a balcony if available for your dates The morning breakfast was very nice and the lady in charge gave us all the cappuccinos we wanted. We were only able to stay one night but hope to return to this very unique corner of Italy in the future.
Review 98:one male member of front of house staff was not too helpful. girls were very friendly.
Review 99:everything. room amazing , light and airy with balcony overlooking Sassi.
Review 100:We initially had trouble finding the hotel (Google map indicates another location) worth checking the exact location before heading off with suitcases on the cobbled streets.
Review 101:Location was great, right in the centre of the caveoso quarter, ideal for sightseeing. The cave bedroom was lovely and spacious.
Review 102:The only thing is that the cave (as you can expect) is quite damp. You can feel the strong smell to humid and the bed sheets and pillows feel damp during the evening. But it was a great experience nevertheless.
Review 103:The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We even got upgraded to the master suit in a real cave, which was very beautiful.
Review 104:it is in a great area and the price was reasonable
Review 105:An excellent location in the heart of Caveoso district.
Review 106:No parking. No wifi. Be aware.
Review 107:Cave and design
Review 108:Good location loved staying in the cave and was handy to everything we needed.
Review 109:room had no window and aircon poor
Review 110:Locality near the sights
Review 111:Room smelt of cows. Mould around the bath.
Review 112:Large comfortable room with great location and view.
Review 113:Location in Caveoso
Review 114:Beautiful town. Hotel was in a great location. We will return.
Review 115:The convenience of the location and the private courtyard
Review 116:The air con was not very good.
Review 117:Really good location and very quiet
Review 118:We suppose we had the best room at least for the view from the balcony on Sasso Caveoso
Review 119:Great location
Review 120:no wifi in room
Review 121:I was hesitant after reading reviews but this place is amazing!
Review 122:No hotel allocated parking though advertised as available. Obvious problem when public parking is full.
Review 123:Close proximity to all cave dwellings.
Review 124:Great location right in the Sassi. Room comfortable with view to Santa Maria de Idris. Friendly and attentive staff.
Review 125:Breakfast was not very good. Did not replenish table.
Review 126:Staff was kind and helpful.
Review 127:noisy room
Review 128:good location
Review 129:Wi fi very poor, only reception area .Staf very moody ,parking half kilometre away.
Review 130:Difficult to find when arrived.
Review 131:Easy to explore Matera and novelty of stay in a "cave"
Review 132:Breakfast could have been better.no fruit and nothing was replenished.
Review 133:Atmosphere .lovely room.nice to just walk out into shops bars etc.
Review 134:Breakfast is very good with lot of options. Washing room is big enough and the bed is soft.
