Reviews for Quinta de Santa Júlia

Review 1:No wifi or tv signal in the villa, that is some distance from the main house. Not a problem tho.

Review 3:The owner was very friendly and helpful. He was happy to show us around his estate. The location was beautiful and stunning. The villa very authentic and great value.

Review 4:Could have stayed forever, didn't want to leave.

Review 5:Location could not have been better. The view of Douro Valley was tremendous. Edward was a great host.

Review 6:The host spent quite a lot of time explaining his winery and grounds. The Quinta was beautiful with a wonderful location above Regua, the river, and the vineyards.

Review 7:A bit far from roads

Review 8:Beautiful dream like place!! Amazing quinta is more of a palace Amazing family hospitality Educatinal as for history inheritage of family and region Amazing port!!!

Review 9:The location was superb and extremely tranquil. Our host and hostess could not have done more for us. A great experienceportugese hospitality par excellence

Review 10:It is difficult to get there following your GPS. The best is when you take the M600 to the restaurant Veranda da Regua, the entrance to the property is 500 meters further up the hill. The wifi is very week and only at the main house or near it. The information package in the holiday house at least was outdated. It would be practical to have a list of shops or restaurants, some place worth visiting. Of course you will get always advise and answers from the owner, but it’s handy to have written, with some maps.

Review 11:It was absolutely great! The view, the house, the owner! Perfect, quite place to enjoy the view and the wine! House was comfortable, with a great terrace; no air-condition but downstairs it is cool enough. You might have problems with the heat in the bedrooms upstairs. Nice welcome package, home-made marmalade, cherries, juice, all you need for a great breakfast. We enjoyed the swimming pool! The owner was very friendly, he took good care of us and you felt really like his guest, in a historic, romantic place.

Review 12:The antique beds are small. I am 5’10” and I could put my head against the headboard and touch the footboard with my toe if I stretched. He offers large cots for guests who are tall, but doesn’t leave you with much space to move around. There is no AC, and if it is hot you need it in the bedroom upstairs, though the downstairs stays cool and you could sleep there on the sofa if there were an intolerable heat wave. Outside it is cool at night, but the upstairs traps the heat. (He might have a fan if you ask; we don’t know.)It was a bit of a stretch to say that breakfast was included. When you arrive the minibar is stocked with fresh squeezed orange juice, milk, 1 yoghurt each, coffee, tea, and a bit of cheese and cake. That is the breakfast, and it is not replenished after the first day. But the towns are all filled with people selling fresh fruits and great pastries, so we ate that. The walls are thin. We and our neighbors each had babies and we could each hear the others’ baby crying. The patio has limited shade. If you both have breakfast at the same time you might have to squeeze together if the sun is hot.Parking by the guest house was a nuisance. The house is on a narrow one lane road. If you meet your neighbor on the way there one of you has to back up to the guest house or the main house. By the guest house there is space either to park or to turn around. If you arrive first you turn around and back into where the road continues. The next person turns around and parks in the space. Then if you leave and return before your neighbor leaves it difficult to park and later get out with him still in the turn-around space. If you stay in the main house there is plenty of parking in the large courtyard. The toiletries are cheap. Shampoo in plastic packets and ordinary mini soaps in plastic wrap.Finding it on Google Maps is a problem. The map tells you where the main house is and routes you there along a road that no longer exists.

Review 13:We stayed in the guest house which is a quarter mile or so down a one lane dirt road from the main house. We had half of the house, a large and comfortable duplex, with antique furniture. There is a gorgeous patio with world class views of the vineyards and valley. It’s wonderful to have breakfast there or just sit out.You are surrounded by vineyards and orchards. Near the house there are trees with fresh fruits—cherries, oranges, lemons…—that you can just pick and eat. They are anyway all falling to the ground and spoiling. We thought that we would be in the middle of nowhere and would have nothing to do but stroll around and admire the scenery. But we were actually near a number of small historic towns that are worth visiting. Our neighbors stayed for a week and said that they had places to go every day. The closest town of significance, Peso da Regua, however, has nothing interesting about it.The owner will probably be happy to give you a tour of his winemaking facilities. Some have commented on the fact that there is no complementary wine, but the wine he makes is high end, so it might be a big much to give a whole bottle. I suggested to him that he might sell more if he gave complimentary glasses and he said that he often has a glass with his guests, but usually the ones who stay a while and hang out as opposed to the ones who come for a couple of days and are out all day sightseeing. You should at least stop by the main house to see some of the beautiful elements in the semi public spaces. He will most likely invite you at some point. (It is all his house, and we were not completely sure how private some of the spaces were.) He was very friendly and eager to learn about us.

Review 14:We would have liked some form of refreshment in the room and we were not told what was available from the staff (although the owner was busy at the time). Be aware that the property is somewhat isolated and if you don't have a hire car you are mainly reliant on taxis.

Review 15:The Quinta de Santa Julia is a really beautiful large private home, with bags of history. The owners gave us lots of information about the house, their family history, the wine business etc. and were very welcoming and helpful, taking us down to the nearest (excellent Veranda da Regua) restaurant on the first night. The view from the property was peerless, the pool lovely. This is no ordinary 'stay' - it was more like staying at a 'stately home' as a private guest of the owner and his wife!

Review 16:The place is peaceful, the view is superb, the house is old and beautiful, the owner is an amazing story (and history) teller, the garden in May is a symphony of flowers. Something special, to remember forever.

Review 17:It might be hard to spot the entrance if you arrived in the dark and it's a drive down to restaurants in Peso da Regua

Review 18:The owner is a welcoming and engaging host and the house of great historical interest. The views from high on the hillside over the vineyards down to Peso were captivating. It is a tremendous and rare experience to stay in such an atmospheric place.

Review 19:Tricky to find with a GPS but take the left route to Loureiro as signposted and you are there.

Review 20:This beautiful ancestral estate lives up to the highest expectations. Costa is an attentive and generous host. The views and gardens are superb and made us stay on just to fully enjoy them. The rooms are exquisite. Their wine is all good.

Review 21:Our stay was an experience, like staying in a museum of Portugal culture, our host was knowledegable and friendly. The whole experience was a treasure to remember. We would like to come back and stay longer, fabulous!

Review 22:Only B&B is offered. Dine elsewhere. Note there is limited opportunity to dine locally. I'd have liked to sample the vineyard's produce, and was disappointed not to be rewarded with the possibility of a drink for successfully arriving there.

Review 23:A tranquil location with panoramic view from the gardens across the valley. The decoration of the rooms is in tune with the historic nature of the building. Perfectly adequate and clean in a traditional old-world style.

Review 24:Not being able to live there fulltime.

Review 25:A truly magnificent experience. From the moment you drive through the unassuming main gates, through a small wooded area, and emerge at the top of a mountain vineyard, you are in peaceful, sun-kissed seclusion. Our group of a dozen or so stayed in both villas and the main house for three nights, essentially having the estate to ourselves. The accommodation is not "modern" in style, but is a pristine, comfortable and charming in a classic Portuguese style. Incredible views of the valley, river and town of Peso da Regua below. Dom Eduardo, the owner of the estate and man behind its eponymous wine is a charming caretaker who will personally see you to your rooms and make sure you have everything you require. Cannot recommend highly enough. Will definitely be returning!
