Reviews for Locanda Di San Martino Hotel & Thermae Romanae
Review 1:be prepared to climb rocky stairs to the city center
Review 2:exceptional hotel in a rock roman spa in the hotel breakfast with live piano music many rooms with own patio
Review 3:the spa and pool was closed due to an electrical repair. also when we made reservations there was only a a suite left for 4 people. It was too much money for cramped accomodations.
Review 4:great location wonderful staff
Review 5:The approach by car can be a little difficult to navigate with the one way and narrow streets
Review 6:The locanda is in a perfect position for exploring old Matera. The staff were very helpful and the valet parking to take and return our car was excellent value for 5 Euro. Great restaurants within a short walk nearby also
Review 7:Nothing although unfortunately the spa wasn't available during our visit. However I did receive prior notice that there was a problem with it.
Review 8:Very comfortable beds. Good breakfast. Great location. Area to sit outside.
Review 9:The spa is the unique offer of this hotel but it was out of action but we were only informed of this after booking when we could not cancel without a fee. Bathroom tap came off in my hand as did the minibar handle - suggesting it is starting to age? Also found out too late it was 20 euros cheaper booking direct on thier website!
Review 10:Great location. Good breakfast. Nice room ( not in a cave this time). We had stayed before so booked again but it was not as good an experience - see below.
Review 11:Underground indoor pool closed and no mention of this on booking.com. It was a main reason to choose this hotel, no apology, no discount or compensation
Review 12:Great authentic cave/grotto hotel, good bed strong shower amazing views from terrace
Review 13:What's not to like?
Review 14:Great room in a cave.Spacious, atmospheric location and lighting. Great swim and spa experience. Super breakfast.Safe place for our bicycles.
Review 15:large group making noise outside our room early in the morning - pool in cave just an ordinary swimming pool, very chlorinated so we didn't use. The description sounded like a natural spring water underground pool.
Review 16:very good location and comfortable room
Review 17:Location was perfect - very central to everything. Thermal pool, sauna area was very relaxing. Breakfast was outstanding and the live piano music was a lovely touch. Room was clean and comfortable. Would definitely recommend.
Review 18:Reception staff were a bit rushed and need to learn to smile. They did everything we asked of them.
Review 19:Location, Location, Location In the heart of the old town. Beautiful views. Excellent clean facilities and good variety of breakfast. Spa was excellent. Car was looked after for a small charge arranged by the hotel locally. Don't rush your visit soak up the atmosphere after the coach tours leave.
Review 20:While the room was charming, it wasn't particularly comfortable. The furniture wasn't practical, and the beds and pillows were okay, but not great. The lighting was insufficient for the space, so the room was darker than we preferred. The wifi was very weak, and we sometimes had to step outside to enable sending and receiving.
Review 21:This hotel makes the most of its unique surroundings. The owner has beautifully renovated a series of caves into charming rooms and a fantastic underground thermal bath available for a reasonable €10. Stay as long as you like, which we did for an afternoon after our long drive. The room and bathroom were both very spacious. The location is perfectly situated for a short walk up the hill to the new city centre, as well as easy access to the old city of Matera and its historical sassi area. The breakfast room is lovely, with a pianist playing classical pieces to start the day.
Review 22:Our room was very spacious clean and well stocked. The outdoor patios just outside our room were a nice touch and the view was beautiful. Loved the piano player at breakfast. The spa was wonderful after a day of walking.
Review 23:Take a taxi from the train station,it's difficult on foot. Thermo massage not working in the Spa. Spa was noisy, not relaxing!
Review 24:Central locAtion in old town. Staff spoke good English. Pianist playing at Breakfast.
Review 25:Beautiful hotel in unusual location with amazing underground pool and spa. Stayed 2 nights whilst travelling through Italy. Many of the properties in the town were cut into the rock. Living and dining in the unique 'caves' was breathtaking. The addition of friendly staff and a wide choice of fresh local food at breakfast made this a perfect stay.
Review 26:The lift was a problem, although once we'd found the steps it was OK.
Review 27:Enthusiastic helpful staff, Sleeping in a cave was excellent. The underground pool, although once was enough. Breakfast was lovely. Good furniture and lighting in room (although was a bit dark - it's a cave!). Location excellent for Matera.
Review 28:Pitty that Swimming Pool not accessible for children > 12 yrs accompanied by parents. Difficult to find when walking in town with luggage at temperature of 40 degree C
Review 29:The room in the caves and best breakfast we had during our stay in Italy
Review 30:-Overpowering smell of damp -Mould in room and bathroom -My room was describe as suite but really a large bedroom with no view. -No table on outside seating area -Cheap uncomfortable furniture and bed. -Quite expensive
Review 31:-Unique experience swimming in a cave pool -Fantastic location -Great Wi Fi -Awesome breakfast -Valet parking
Review 32:The location was amazing. Really very eerie knowing the history of the Sassi yet beautifully spellbinding. Really fabulous little cafes and bars down laneways. Definitely walk up to the main piazza. The hotel was a total gem. Swim in the pool is a must. One of the most unforgettable experiences I have had in my travels this year. Room is great. Like being in a cave. Make sure you do a personal walking tour but early in the morning in summer as it gets pretty hot. You will love it.
Review 33:A fantastic hotel. The best hotel during our trip to Southern Italy. The thermal bath in the hotel was clean and very nice to swim in. Can highly recommend the hotel.
Review 34:Great breakfast (not only sweet as usual in Italy) with live piano music! Very special. Big room with balcony overlooking the sassi! Everything is close by. Even the private parking just 5 walking minutes for 10 euro per day. Pool area with sauna and steam room very relaxing! You might be lucky and have it for yourself when swimming in the morning!
Review 35:The air con was not very effective and the room (#4) had a strong persistent mouldy smell.
Review 36:The novelty of staying in a cave room was a good experience.
Review 37:The room listed as a 'suite' was simply a bedroom with 4 beds (one of them was too short for even our 155cm tall daughter). Did not give the authentic feel we expected. There was no view as we looked out on to a wall and had no place to sit outside our room. Dog barking for at least an hour around 2.30 in the morning kept us awake.
Review 38:Proximity to main attractions and restaurants. Pianist at breakfast was pleasant (but somewhat unnecessary).
Review 39:The pool! The large vaulted room! The breakfast with great coffee! The location! All outstanding. The pick up & delivery car parking service available makes life so much easier in the heat! Fast laundry service was brilliant. We shall definitely return.
Review 40:The air conditioning is quite old and not very efficient. However, we were there in a heatwave. If the weather had been cooler, it may have been adequate.
Review 41:Fantastic view of the Sasi. Room is a small cave. It's OK.
Review 42:The breakfast is average.
Review 43:The wellness spa is the very best in the world. I say that as a frequent traveller that travels the world, and spends 150+ hotel nights a year.
Review 44:Had room with half a shower door. Ended up with lots of water on floor.
Review 45:Staying at the Locanda Di San Martino Hotel was a unique experience thatwe will never forget. Location is great. Staff very helpful. Deliciousbreakfast. Spa was fantastic.
Review 46:The access was more difficult than usual because the road leading to the hotel was closed due to building work, Not the hotel's fault, and only likely to be a problem for the next few months.
Review 47:Everything really. The location on the cliff side plus sleeping in a cave particularly.
Review 48:The location; the ambiance and the breakfast! The falcons and swifts in the blue sky above the old buildings, which tumbled down the side of the ravine, made it all extra special.
Review 49:Lots of stairs. Little bit difficult to find the place and parking is challenging, although we were provided with contact info for a private parking garage. The lady in there did not speak any English, but we managed to get the car in anyway and price was what we were told by the hotel before.
Review 50:Spa with a swimming pool in a cave. Nice breakfast along with some piano playing. Location within the old town of Matera, nice restaurants nearby.
Review 51:Parking is difficult but the hotel is on the edge of the Sassi so not far to take luggage.
Review 52:Breakfast excellent with a pianist playing in background. Swimming pool and spa lovely for relaxation after the heat of the day. Watching the swifts and falcons as the sun sets
Review 53:The actual property has lovely character but its very uncomfortable (cheaply furnished) They charge 10 Euro to use their pool! The breakfast is the worst we have had in Italy! Don't know how they got their high score as I ended up with a sore back from bed!
Review 54:Charging us both twice to use the spa I thought was extremely petty. Once 2 x 10 euros for early evening and then another 2 x 10 euros for a 5 min dip before breakfast!
Review 55:The swimming pool and spa were lovely and the location perfect for exploring Matera.
Review 56:I would like to have had more comfortable seating in our room since were limited to 3 small chairs.
Review 57:The hotel achieves an excellent balance between the area's historic past and the need to meet modern expectations. The spa and breakfast areas are beautiful in preserving the cave elements while giving guests a comfortable and unique experience.
Review 58:None at all. I can't wait to return.
Review 59:The hotel was just wonderful. Matera was truly amazing, what a town, welded by history and full of fascination and more than a touch of sorrow for those people who lived there in the past. Fabulous restaurants too. Just great. The hotel with its rooms carved from rock is something else but wait until you experience the spa! Wow!
Review 60:Our location in the heart of the city was beyond our ability to imagine, slept in a cave, had a full perfectly prepared breakfast and even though a lot of walking was required, it was the perfect hotel to relax and be a part of the area.
Review 61:The warm and friendly welcome from very pleasant and helpful staff. We stayed a week to really explore the city and Locanda di San Martino provided an ideal base in peaceful and truly atmospheric surroundings. Do go to Baccus Restaurant for one of the best meals in Matera.
Review 62:Bike friendly - helpful storage and greeted two bedraggled cyclists arriving soaked with warm smiles. Warm Jacuzzi bath after a day cycling in the rain. Beautiful bedrooms in original caves. A pianist played at breakfast. The spa was the most unusual and nicest I have ever experienced. Great location. Special thanks to Nico.
Review 63:Didn't realise I had to pay extra to use the spa as already quite pricey for a nights stay.
Review 64:I was in a single room/cave and I was impressed how the room was organized and the en-suite as part of the old cave dwellings. Breakfast was excellent in a big spacious cave. I used the spa twice and it was good
Review 65:Beautiful and unique hotel, a one of its kind gem. Loved the location, the precious furniture, the fairytale-like view from my room window, the delicious breakfast eaten while listening to the piano played live in the room...And I loved the "thermae romanae"! The swimming pool in the cave is an unforgettable experience, worth repeating over and over again! Highly recommended!
Review 66:We had never experienced such elegant comfort and using the thermal baths, sauna, hot room, etc was both exciting and soothing. The staff were very helpful - we felt at home. We will come again!
Review 67:Difficult to access--even without the festival, you will have to lug your luggage for a fair distance and up and down several sets of stairs. Was fine for us, but may be difficult for someone older or anyone with a great deal of baggage.
Review 68:Arrived during the Presepe Viviente (living nativity procession) and access to the hotel was completely blocked off for the festival. Staff was great in directing us to parking, recommending easily accessible restaurants and we had a backstage pass to this unique and incredible event. Hotel rooms are fantastic, WIFI is very strong and very fast, breakfast is sumptuous and the pool is otherworldly.
Review 69:Great family suite "in the cave" with loft upstairs for children, nice bathroom, great spa experience for the adults, fabulous breakfast. Wonderful location for the Presepe Vivente, wouldn't change a thing!
Review 70:Bed was too hard for my husband.
Review 71:Lovely hotel with typical architecture of Matera, pleasant staff, great breakfast (yummy cappuccino!), unique spa and available parking (for 15 euros, they pick up and drop off your car at the hotel for you-we just set our GPS for Via Fioretini, ignored the ZTL and parked with our flashers on, then walked 100 meters to the hotel and she sent a guy to take our car to the garage right away. Worth it!)
Review 72:The hotel was great but I didn't see the small print of the additional €10pp charge to use the spa facilities. That was the chief reason I chose that hotel.
Review 73:The location was perfect, it was a joy to open the window in the morning and see history surrounding you. A must see place.
Review 74:Excellent hotel, central location, unique atmosphere, our room was fantastic, although it wasnt a cave it had a great view. The spa is an incredible space.Breakfast is superb, the staff is very attentive. We had a great time in Matera. There is no other place that has its historical footprint so well preserved!
Review 75:two single bed together instead of a twin one.
Review 76:room and bathroom very large, position in the center of "sassi", wonderful pool in the spa. Delicious and original breakfast with a variety of typical local dishes.
Review 77:Nothing negative to say about this hotel. If you want to dive into the past, this is the place. The attention to detail and care that has been invested into the establishment is conspicuous.Courteous personel give it the finishing touch. The breakfast is varied and sumptuous and the underground spa is perfect. Some of the rooms are not caves, so if you tend to be claustraphobic then there àre alternative options..Number 12 is one of these. It really is a pearl of a hotel and we enjoyed every minute of our stay.
Review 78:Matera is fascinating place and Locanda San Martino is excellent and exceptional accommodation here. It was the unforgettable experience to stay here, enjoy the view from our terrace, Roman spa and rich tasty breakfast. Highly recommended!
Review 79:Nothing
Review 80:The room was spacious and superb. It was a really unusual place to stay with beautiful views outside your room. The spa was amazing. A great place to end the day after exploring the Sassi. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 81:The spa did not open at 0730 as advertised, so a morning visit meant a cold caldarium and tepid jacuzzi. The pool and dry sauna were still wonderful, but everything should be up and running when advertised for something that costs extra to use
Review 82:Fantastic find in a great location! The staff were accomodating and friendly and the breakfast with the piano was wonderful. The room was clean and comfortable and the spa the first night was spectacular! Despite the minor glitch with the spa the second morning, I still think the hotel was wonderful and have every intention of returning.
Review 83:This Hotel was the favorite night of a three week trip across Italy. Matera is fascinating and the Lacanda Di San Martino Hotel was the like a dream come true. Everything was designed to relax and inspire you. I will forever remember our time there.
Review 84:No negatives this time!
Review 85:Matera is a unique place and this hotel is right in the centre of the 'sassi' and all the rooms are in the original cave dwellings but with all mod cons.
Review 86:It is a very nice hotel with the back part of the room dug out of rock, typical of Matera houses. It has a very special feel, The underground spa, with its tunnel like swimming pool of warm water is fabulous! The staff was very helpful and friendly. It also provides a very nice breakfast.
Review 87:The room in the middle of the sassi was very original, clean and nice! The personnel was sympathetic and helpful and the baths charming and relaxing. A good value!
Review 88:Staff were exceedingly helpful in getting us to our destination. Matera is not so accessible when travelling from the west, but we were given every assistance.
Review 89:The bed was a bit hard. The parking situation sucks, but if you are willing to pay (which we did) they have a guy who will take your car to a secure garage. He picks it up and drops it off right to the door. Its worth it, just pay it!
Review 90:So comfortable and very romantic. Very beautiful hotel with an AMAZING spa set up. Inside Matera, and close to restaurants, shops, etc.
Review 91:This place is as much "IN the heart of the city" as you can get. The cave theme of the hotel is incredible and the service was great. I would definitely stay here again.
Review 92:Leaving :-(
Review 93:Cave dwelling feeling, beautifully done. Underground spa and pool stunning. Location, ambience, quiet, very clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. Car parking service for a fee. Overall good value.
Review 94:Big room. Fantastic views. Spotless. Positive, engaging and happy staff. The spa is brilliant - and at a bargain price €10 - awesome. Breakfast caters for all tastes, in a calm atmosphere. The town is a vibrant place to visit steeped in history.
Review 95:Absolutely nothing. Couldn't fault it. Perfect.
Review 96:We stayed here after a 2 week road trip through Southern Italy and far outweighed our expectations. It is an amazing hotel and was the jewel of our trip. Our room at the top was perfect with a small terrace to sit and listen to the bells and sounds of the sassi. The back drop is magnificent. Lots of choice for breakfast including regional cheeses, pastries, breads, fruit, etc - all to the sound of a pianist playing. The underground pool is a fantastic spa which we didn't want to leave. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We will definitely return. Want to keep it a secret. It was heaven. A timeless place.
Review 97:the rooms were stuffy even with aircon on. A fan would have made the world of difference - air needed circulating rather than cooling though I slept like a log given how dark the caves can be once windows are closed
Review 98:Incredibly atmospheric and romantic cave room. Minibar and nice wine glasses available. We had bought a wonderful wine and were able to open it and enjoy it without hassling staff. Lots of balconies to sit out on and gaze across the gorge. Wonderful breakfast with a huge variety of foods from savoury to sweet Fabulous spa with different cave pools and sauna (though no kids under 18 allowed be aware) GREAT location - a mere few minutes walk to the town above or all the main Matera attractions
Review 99:Finding the hotel was very, very difficult. It's best to ring them and they will help you get there.... Otherwise it's very stressful.
Review 100:Beautiful cool white room, quiet and calm. Great Breakfast complete with piano in the Sassi area. Loved it....
Review 101:I would have liked to get more advance notice about how to get there as it is very difficult to find . Also no parking is available which makes their solution of a pick up drive away , bring back for £. 15 a day nearly unavoidable
Review 102:Beautifully done sasso in the heart of sassi. Excellent breakfast with a piano player . Impressive underground swimming pool
Review 103:Not the most comfortable bed!
Review 104:The amazing setting of Matera; the old city; wonderful breakfast with pianist playing; staff was wonderful, helpful, friendly.
Review 105:It is not said that you have to pay 10€ more for each person to access the swimming pool.
Review 106:The hotel is beautiful, the breakfast in the piano bar was the best we had in 2 weeks in Italy, the gorgeous swimming pool in the cave (you have to be over 18 though), the location in the heart of the sassi
Review 107:More fruit at breakfast? No problems really.
Review 108:Location Welcome and helpfulness of staff- helped re parking (which was a nightmare) Pool/facility was unique - enjoyed it
Review 109:A great hotel in the heart of a unique area. A comfortable room overlooking the old sassi district, a lovely breakfast and wonderful swim in the cave pool! Excellent, helpful staff.
Review 110:Excellent location the rooms are nice and big the staff very helpful and the thermal pool was just gorgeous ...couldn't have asked for a better place to stay while in the most beautiful town of Sassi
Review 111:Really magical setting in Matera's Sassi, the rooms are built in the rock. The pool is fantastically relaxing and atmospheric and it was a quiet time so we had it almost to ourselves. Helpful valet service (extra) so the car park isn't a problem given how central the hotel is. Breakfast had many typical local ingredients, what a treat!
Review 112:The hotel has not an internal parking, and park the car arround it is very difficult.
Review 113:Almost everything: it is quit perfect for both businness and vacation. The View is amaizing.
Review 114:I would not say that this is a dislike but it is a price one sometimespays for staying in hotels located in historic centers. Parking is alittle bit inconvenient. Either you park in a public lot outside of thesassi area which is miles away or you pay Euros 10 per day + an optionof extra Euros 5 for the collection and delivery of the car each timeyou want to use the car. I did not mind paying the extra for thebeautiful location of the hotel. One little detail the hotel canimprove on is their hair dryer which is not powerful enough to even dryshort hair.
Review 115:The location is magic. Our room had a panoramic view of the sassi area.At 6:00am birds and swallows were singing and flying all over the town,it was spectacular. The gentleman at the reception was very helpful andcourteous. Our room was spacious, with simple but tasteful decoration.
Review 116:The location is great but is difficult to access by car. If only staying for a night or two, I highly recommend using their offsite parking garage and carrying a small bag instead of trying to lug a large suitcase.
Review 117:We were right in the heart of Matera, they have solved the parking difficulties with safe garage parking service. (Well worth it for peace of mind. )It really is a very different hotel, and the staff were really pleasant and helpful
Review 118:Nothing bit hard to find that was all!!!
Review 119:The staff were fantastic the room amazing breakfast was very very good. The thermal pool area was a truly great experience
Review 120:Nothing.
Review 121:Super cool rooms in the caves. Wonderful spa. Great breakfast spread. Excellent location within the sassi. What could be better? A note to travelers with physical challenges: it is at the bottom of the basin, so there are many stairs to get up out of the sassi if you are not driving along the main road.
The Fine Print
