Reviews for Sant'Angelo Luxury Resort
Review 1:Small disappointments: hotel offered valet parking for 26 euros/day while there is a free parking 50 meters from the hotel Bottles of water in the room that we assumed to be free where actually part of the minibar with no indication
Review 2:Very difficult to find, needed better directions and parking well off-site .In Italy signs are very intermittent so very easy to get lost, but great fun as well.
Review 3:Superb location in the sassi
Review 4:Rect was rude, wouldn't let us check in or charge devices. Said bar closed, asked for bottle opener as one room didn't have any, said no, phone in room not working, said nothing they could do, this is a nice hotel, it is not authentic or a resort.
Review 5:as above, clean, comfortable
Review 6:Didn't really enjoy the piped music of cover versions of 70's songs at breakfast. If they had to play music they should be playing Vivaldi, or Verdi or Rossini - something Italian to fit in with the view and surroundings.
Review 7:Loved the cave bedroom with the romantic look to it. Fantastic breakfast with great view from the terrace.
Review 8:Lots of money for very little, except charm of staying in grotto. Air conditioning turned off at night, both nights, by central timer. Too hot to sleep.
Review 9:Location and view from restaurant are wonderful. So is the breakfast
Review 10:There was really not one thing to not like. One would have to be of a very uber-critical almost un-satisfiable nature to find flaws.
Review 11:To stay at the Sant'Angelo is an experience transcending the ordinary. We stayed in one of the more bigger caves and really did not want to leave it. The owners of this family run hotel really did a great job!
Review 12:Great Location, amazing views of the city and a wonderful room with a private entrance from the street/ pathway. Amazing to watch sunsets and sunrises from.
Review 13:The Air-Conditioning never really cooled the room and the room's minibar wasn't cold when we arrived and when we left it wasn't really very cold either. Also the bath was only a bath not a shower, but that didn't really matter to us we were on our honeymoon.
Review 14:Some staff were a bit incompetent (also experienced by other guests we spoke to). Regularly got the wrong directions or told contradicting things.
Review 15:Lots of character. Very beautiful. Amazing breakfasts. Definitely an experience and good value for money.
Review 16:Some photo show for my booking is not for my room, so I thought we will have a bath tub, and a sofa area, but in fact none of those, the room is much smaller, with a very small stand up shower only. There is no activity for the guest, so can't really say it's a resort. Stand up shower, bad design.
Review 17:It's cool to stay in a cave, the setting is nice but can be much better. Carving on the wall are original, but only know until we ask. High quality toiletries, specially the lotion, you will need it in this dry/hot weather! Breakfast ok good compare with other Italian hotel/B&B.
Review 18:The cave rooms are beautifully designed, but they do smell a little damp
Review 19:A wonderful place to stay, the cave rooms are elegant and fun while the breakfast is excellent.
Review 20:the front desk could have been more kind. When we left she hardly said bye. Air conditioning never worked properly
Review 21:the place is uniquely located. Spectacular. The staff was warm, kind and genuine. They gave us tips for a one day tour we won't forget. The room was nice. Essential but stilish furniture. Restaurant is good. Breathtaking view and high quality. A bit pricey
Review 22:Staff not at all friendly or attentive.
Review 23:Unbelievable city that takes you back centuries. Hotel fantastic, although photos show cave bedrooms even though our rooms were lovely, they certainly were not caves. Restaurant worth a visit. Great location and free parking up the road. Not easy to find as GPS didn't recognize oneway streets.
Review 24:Stay in a design cafe! Why not! Hotel is situated in the historical center of Matera in the Sassi. Hotel is diffused, scattered over the area. Rooms have been wonderfully designed and are surprisingly comfortable. Very romantic in fact. Beds very comfortable suites spacious. It boats a fantastic restaurant with excellent cuisine and a spectacular terrace with a view. Breakfast is also excellent. This is not a resort however. Very pleasant stay and a unique experience in a very special town.
Review 25:It gets a bit damp & smelly, but it's a cave!
Review 26:Breath taking surprise when the door in a normal wall opens to a stunningly decorated cave! It is the stuff of fairy tales!
Review 27:Nothing. Hotel should send instructions for finding the place!
Review 28:The hotel is a completely renovated part of the "sassi"; i.e., that small houses built into caves in the mountainside. Rooms are completely renovated and clean. Be advised to get detailed driving directions if you are coming by car as it is difficult to find your way down the mountain from the main town, and the hotel's exact address is not clear on GPS. Also note that the rooms are each separate units, up a fairly long staircase from the reception and breakfast area.
Review 29:No information was supplied on check-in, the lounge bar and restaurant seemed closed as it was out of season. Later found out that they were open but we had already had aperitivo and dinner in the town. Shame as the restaurant looked really nice at breakfast.
Review 30:Stunning location and beautiful resort. We will visit again soon for longer as we were only there for one night.
Review 31:Nothing
Review 32:Excellent location, Amazing, luxurious and large "cave" rooms. Excellent breakfast. We stayed only one night, but enjoyed every bit of it.
Review 33:The rooms are a bit over priced, and if you want a cave room, or a room with a view, be sure and specify it in your booking. Our first stay was in a cave room off season, and it had a private patio with a stunning view. The price was very reasonable. Our second vist we paid more for a suite - and it had an almost hidden entrance which was dark with no view. The kind girl at reception was very accommodating and moved us to a non cave suite (not as charmimg as the caves) right next to the reception area. We took it because it had a tiny patio with a view. However the air conditioning worked very poorly, and it was 90+ degrees in August. I was up at 2:30 am taking a cool shower, it was so uncomfortable in the room. And we paid more for this experience - which was disappointing - than our first visit. So... Be specific about your expectations when you book, and be sure and take into account the weather. Matera is not user friendly at 90+!
Review 34:The rooms are beautiful but vary greatly. Some are up high with patios and views of the city. Some are dark, lower, and have no view at all. Generally they are all beautifully designed, but some are cave rooms and some are not. We have stayed twice, once in a normal double room and once in a jr suite. Both rooms were stunning. The breakfast is amazing, very upscale and a large selection in a stunning cave dining room. Perfect location in matera, immediately adjacent to the main piazza downtown. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
Review 35:Amazing, beautiful place
Review 36:Minor detail: small shower
Review 37:location, location!! And it looks stunning. + great breakfast

Review 41:Reception Bedroom location
Review 42:Breakfast
Review 43:location and room amazing
Review 44:The showen was very, very small and had funghi
Review 45:All the rest
Review 46:Limited to no parking space
Review 47:View
Review 48:Cleanliness Cave-like room Good WiFi Polite, helpful staff
Review 49:Best views of caves.
Review 50:general architecture, unusual rooms, the lounge bar, the terrace overlooking
Review 51:Can't really find anything to point at :)
Review 52:Location, cave suite, friendliness of staff, overall comfort and experience
Review 53:Attentin to customer needs. Even found a doctor when needed.
Review 54:Location. Breakfast absolutely excellent, good food, perfect location to start the day.
Review 55:There was a smell to the room, of dampness that could have been avoided by dehumidifying the space.
Review 56:great breakfast, fantastic dinner, wonderful room and spectacular view!
Review 57:Ambiance - in room - lighting beautiful touch Products Location Facilities
Review 58:The rooms are so beautiful! Really unique and not like any other hotel.
Review 59:The location, the service and the confort of the hotel are highly recommandable.
Review 60:Walking up to our room required care for two 70-year olds.
Review 61:The hotel is beautifully appointed, with spectacular views and an excellent restaurant. Our room was comfortable and had top of the line fixtures in the bath. The staff is warm, friendly and very helpful.
Review 62:Almost nothing worth noting except beds are very firm (people with backproblems take notice),hotel needs to advertise that most direct way tohotel is plane to Bari then a car arranged for by hotel to the hotel(this way is actually quite simple and not complicated at all). Iarrived on a Monday which is the down day for the hotel (restaurantclosed, etc though they will make arrangements for you to eat locally),better to arrive any other day.
Review 63:View, respect for site, staff, superb local based cuisine, quiet, staffagain, uniqueness of hotel without being at all pretentious, warmwelcome and availability of staff. The Sassi\Matera is one of the greatexperiences (on a par with Angkor Wat etc) and this hotel is worthy ofthe place. I hate to recommend it because I am afraid too many visitorswill spoil it, but if it survived Mel Gibson I am hoping it can takecare of itself. I will be back without question.
Review 64:The service that doesn't correspond to a 4* hotel: - checking in at 14h00, you are asked to wait 16h00/ 16h30 to have someone helping you with your suitcases; - you do ask for a map of the city, and you are told to go to ask at the info point on the Piazza (but on the day of our departure, we saw that they had quite many of them at the hotel! - the bar, supposed to be open at 17h00 (according to the reception) is not open yet at 18h30, - and many more!!!
Review 65:The location and the design of the hotel.
Review 66:Unfriendly staff; very poor breakfast with virtually no food left 20minutes before the end of the breakfast period. Too expensive for whatis offered. No private parking.
Review 67:Good location well inside the Sassi area.
Review 68:The service was average at best. And the rooms, while spacious and beautiful, are not designed for comfort, although I was pleased that the room was warm in December (including the floor). The bathroom seems like it was an afterthought.
Review 69:It was beautiful.
Review 70:Charged us for a cappucino as part of breakfast - was rather stingy given the room cost.
Review 71:Fantastic room, total luxury. Incredible location overlooking the gorge.
Review 72:The hotel is perfectly situated at Sassi di Matera, the area is magnificent and the hotel structure is unique. Unfortunately the experience has been spoiled by the air conditioning system that was insufficient for the room, in one of hottest day of the summer. I let you imagine the nightmare that was sleeping in.
Review 73:The room was extremely nice however the air con failed to keep us comfortable due to the 40 degree temps. I also found the service of senior management to be lacking when a senior manager watched asmy wife loaded the car with heavy bags whilst I was inside finalizing the bill. This was extremely insulting and marred an otherwise excellent experience.
Review 74:The restaurant was first class the chef, Ms Calad, prepared excellent local dishes using local produce! We also liked the location overlooking the Sassi and the rest of the town.
Review 75:Most of the rooms, as well as the restaurant, are accessible only via steep, long stairs. This should be pointed out as it makes the hotel unsuitable for guests with disabilities.
Review 76:Integration into historic structures is very well done. Very nice, designer-style rooms with good amenities.
Review 77:As stated in other reviews, if you have mobility issues (canes, walkers, etc.) this is not the place for you. Each cave room or suite has its own entrance which require some walking on uneven cobblestone paths and stairs. But then again, if you are in Matera to visit the Sassi, then you should be expecting to walk on uneven cobblestone paths.
Review 78:We loved our suite (number 44). The bed and pillows were very comfortable, everything was pristinely clean and well appointed. My favorite feature was the enormous sunken tub (note if you want a stand up shower, this would not be the room for you). We chose this hotel because of its unique design. Each room or suite will be unique, because they were cave dwellings. While there were man made extensions (such as the entry room in our suite), most of the suite looked to be updated original cave room excavations. If you want to stay in a one of a kind hotel, choose Sant Angelo. Do not let the origin as a cave scare you. It is a luxury hotel with all the modern conviences, just with a unique ambiance. We ate at the hotel restaurant the first night. The food was excellent. The two young men (Donato and Francesco) were wonderful and had great recommendations on local specialities. Everyone spoke enough English that there were no language barriers.
Review 79:The breakfast. The bread was old, as well as the flowers on the tables.
Review 80:the room was very nice, inside a cave.
Review 81:Missing wifi in room but ethernet cable was working hopefully
Review 82:Room Breakfast People kindness
Review 83:The shower didn't work well

Review 85:Leaking toilet!
Review 86:Excellent location and atmosphere
Review 87:Good help
