Reviews for Casa da Tia Amalia
Review 1:Tastefully decorated and quiet hostel as it should be. Extremely hospitable multi lingual caretakers. Fully working kitchen at guest's disposal. Good bedding and linen in room with A/C and heating. Perfect wifi. Beautiful common living room with fireplace and computer table. Good breakfast buffet in nearby building. Stunning vista from our room. Car park at 50 metres distance in a perfectly safe street.
Review 2:We found the room very small and the bathroom really small. The rooms were not sound proofed. The lock on the bedroom door was just a hook. Pictures of the rooms looked much bigger than reality
Review 3:Age of building and open fire
Review 4:It is a wonderful place to stay with very friendly and helpful people. They also have a restaurant with great food and value for money! The view from their terras on the city if Mertola with the Moorish castle and the church is unforgettable! Highly recommendable!
Review 5:Excellent location to chill and enjoy the excellent view to Mertola. Clean, renovated, spacious rooms. Friendly and caring staff. Close to perfection.
Review 6:The room was double with toilet/shower, but basically there was no door seperating the toilet from the room where the bed was! Also, no toiletries and there were spots on towels.
Review 7:Nicely decorated
Review 8:I loved the staff. Nelson, the owner, was very kind and helpful. Directed me to a few good restaurants and tourist sites. Also, he speaks English which was a huge relief as I didn't speak Portuguese. Great beds and amazing facilities. The only downside would possibly be location. It is across the river. It's not very far in a car or taxi, and you can walk to the town center in less than 30 minutes. Like I said, only a tiny downside. I would definitely stay again.
Review 9:The friendliness of the owners and staff were great. The location has a real retro 50s feel about it and the furniture is really rustic and interesting. Breakfast for €5:00 is a very good option that should not be missed.
Review 10:Although it's on the other side of the river that naked it perfectly peaceful. I was given a very friendly welcome. The dorm room was spotless and has my all linen towels provided. The breakfast though was superb. Would highly recommend!
Review 11:Rooms have thin walls, hope your neighbours aren't in honeymoon ;)
Review 12:The location, of course: if you get the front rooms you can't ask for a better view on the village. The attention in the details of furnishing, and the whole feeling of the interiors, very charcteristic and cosy.
Review 13:No door/curtain to bathroom/toilet. A bit expensive for what you get for location
Review 14:Breakfast was fantastic & great value. Location with views of castle/village across river is great for walks & photos.
Review 15:The door to the room was so flimsy you could blow it down. As we were the only guests, this wasn't a huge concern but I don't think it's particularly secure.
Review 16:View of Mertola, the decoration, the fact that the host lit a fire for us in the living room and came back to keep it going while we were cooking.
Review 17:Lovely quiet and comfortable place opposite Mértola. Owned by a friendly couple and run by another friendly couple, it has a family feel to it! The fireplace in the downstairs living and dining room was lit every night and the cosy feeling I felt transported me back to my childhood. We liked everything about it!
Review 18:The bathroom has no door but it does not matter
Review 19:Good place to stay. Very friendly Russian speaking staff. Also very good hostel owner: he came at the evening to check is everything OK and gave many advises about visiting Mertola and surroundings. Air condition can make room warm in winter time. Wonderful view to other bank of the river. To be honest I can say that this is one of the best hostel I've ever stayed
Review 20:The bathroom has no door. The house is located far from the city center, you have to take the car to get there.
Review 21:The lady who runs the house is very nice and helpful. The cosy living room with fireplace was much appreciated in winter time.
Review 22:The care the owners have taken in restoring the guest house and bar restaurant over the road, the warm welcome from the couple who run the guest house, the view of Mertola from the bar and watching as evening came and the castle became bathed in a warm light
Review 23:The hotel has a small but functional kitchen. This space could be improved with more storage room for groceries.
Review 24:The best sentence to describe our experience is: home away from home. We recommend this place. We went in low season and mid week, so the place was empty but it didn´t feel isolated. The rooms are lovely. Some had share bathroom facilities and others were ensuite but didn´t had bathroom doors. We were by ourselves and the housekeepers offered us a room upgrade. We stayed in room nº1 and it had a bathroom with a door. The living room is very cozy and it has a amazing fireplace. Even though it was winter the hotel was warm.
Review 25:Nothing really
Review 26:Liked everything ... House and room very pleasant combining character and comfort ... The owner ( Nelson ) greeted us and was most helpful ... Including advise on a great restaurant... We'll be back!
Review 27:The moment we opened the door we knew we are going to like it...the atmosphere was so cosy with open fire in living room, vintage decorations...the best of all were Maria and Nicolai with their warm welcoming smiles, tea was ready straight away and we were invited to the fire where we were joined by others and we spent lovely evening together... In the morning the breakfast were delicious...can only recommend...great location with beautiful view on the mertola castle, great staff, great value for money...would surely stay there again:)
Review 28:This place is just a true gem in a beautiful area of Portugal. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the owner who made us feel at home straight away. Great location with beautiful views over Mertola and the Guadiana river. We also loved the decor throughout . If you are looking for a cosy place to stay with a rustic and traditional feel then this is the place to go for.
Review 29:Nothing.
Review 30:Casa de tia amalia lies onthe other side of Mertola with a fantastic view on the old city, the rooms are lovely, decorated with great details and very homely. I was greeted by the ukrainian couple taking care of the place. Maria and Nikolai are so lovely and welcoming, trying to explain everything with hands because they only speak Portuguese and Russian. But they made me feel at home, gabe me tea and made fire. The owner is also very welcoming, helping with tipps for a great experience in Portugal and easy to talk with. Looking forward to come back. Thank you!
Review 31:Our hosts were wonderful, kind and attentive without intrusion. The hotel is located over La Guardiana from Mertola, so we enjoyed fantastic views on our short walk into town. The room was comfortable and welcoming - a small kitchen for food prep enabled us to meet fellow travellers.
Review 32:We were warmly welcomed at the hotel. The tenants were super nice and friendly and helpful for everything (map of the city, tipps for restaurants and things to do). And there's an amazing view over the castle! We had a great stay in Mertola. I recommend the city and the Casa da Tia Amalia if you go to Portugal!
Review 33:little bit too far from town centre, so had to use car all the time, the advert said "car space" but when you arrive they ask you to park away from the hotel, door lock not secure, it only a lock that you might find on a dolls house or garden shed, no toiletries supplied, no tv, no tea making facility etc etc, probably the worst hotel to stay in the town
Review 34:leaving
Review 35:Simply the best place to stay in Mértola and baixo Alentejo. The casa da tia Amália is a beautiful house, completely renovated with all the commodities you can imagine (fully equipped kitchen, internet, super cosy living room, etc.) we met the owners during check in who were super nice and welcoming, and after had the company of Nicola and his wife who help run the place and are also super nice people! The place has a great home feeling and me and my friends really enjoyed our stay. Again many thanks to everyone there and a BIG recommendation.
Review 36:Nothing not to like, no use of kitchen could be an issue to some
Review 37:Staff really nice and checked us in early, nice rooms, though a non-partitioned bathroom is a new one to me......
Review 38:There was a smell of canalization in the toilet, despite the cleanliness of the place.
Review 39:Location, which gives a beautiful view over Mértola, in particular at breakfast time. Breakfast is very good. Staff is very nice and friendly, which makes you feel at home. The house itself is very well decorated, in a traditional style with arabic elements.
Review 40:Nothing
Review 41:Very Trendy B&B / Hostel. Excellent Rooms. Helpful Staff. Best Place to stay if you're visiting Mértola. Amazing Value for Money. Good Wi-Fi Connection.
Review 42:Nothing, it was just perfect!
Review 43:The decoration. The location, in front of the castle (the view by night is magic). Our host, very kind. The sodas and beers in the fridge. The cleanliness and the comfort.
Review 44:The walk to the other side of the canyon is about 15 minutes
Review 45:Like a home away from home. Though the owners weren't available when we arrived we were shown around by their neighbour. We spent around 2 hours just sitting out in front in the sun and later inside reading and relaxing.
Review 46:Far away from the living world
Review 47:Friendly people - luxury house / kitchen
Review 48:the rooms are not very private in terms of noise

Review 75:internet was free, but slow - it is in the country; room had a private bathroom with nice facilities, but the bathroom did not have a door (at least in my room)
Review 76:Beautiful setting, very pleasant staff (two spoke English), very nice room, decent breakfast at a nominal cost, and the price was very affordable
Review 77:bathroom had a unpleasant smell from the drains, which is probably unavoidable and not a problem of cleanliness but still unpleasant
Review 78:Friendly staff, very helpful and easygoing, cosy and nicely decorated traditional house, quiet place, completely unpretentious, great place to stay in Mertola!
Review 79:Doors, though old and nice are too weak and do not isolate at all. Bit isolated from town.
Review 80:Location opposite the town and castle in a very quiet area with beautiful views and surrounded by orange groves. Simple, beautiful decoration. And best of all the humour and attention of Maria and Nicola, a couple of Portuguese Ukranians who run the hospedaria with a really warm friendliness. Thanks to them!

Review 88:Location is a bit of a walk (approx 15 min) across the river from the center of town, though you have a lovely view of the castle at night.
Review 89:-Fantastic atmostphere, with a wood burning stove in the common area, comfortable couches, and a wonderfully rustic feel. There's not much better than conversing in front of the fire with good friends drinking Porto on a rainy night! -Very friendly staff. Happy to help with directions to nearby hiking areas and maps around town. -Other guests were cordial and welcoming, and even gave us a plate of french toast!
Review 90:Hospitality was second to none and we were warmly welcomed. A wood burning fire was lit for us in the sitting room downstairs and breakfast was laid on with freshly squeezed oranges. On leaving, we were given a gift of bag of satsumas. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Review 91:There's nothing negative. The only thing some people might not like is that it is on the other side of the river from Mértola, although you can easily walk there.
Review 92:The staff and the decoration. Marta and her family are really nice and treated us like we were friends. The decoration is simple but very cosy.
