Reviews for Kogakuro

Review 1:Mieko and her team were fantastic during our stay in January. They had a strong attention to guest detail delivered with exceptional Japanese hospitality. The breakfasts were oiishi (delicious). My only suggestion is that the racks in the ski storage room might be modified to more readily accommodate longer skis.

Review 2:Nothing

Review 3:We had a wonderful stay at kogakuro. Mieko and her family and staff including Mitch were fabulous hosts- always had a smile and a greeting and were very helpful in all matters from recommending first timers on the logistics of the 'how, what and where's ' of skiing , good eating joints, arranging train tickets, picking us up at the 'drop off point' on arrival to Myoko and even dropping us off at the train station when we left . Happy hour and the open fire in the lounge area was always very inviting after a long days skiing as was the inhouse onsen . The Japanese style room was very comfortable and we found the futons very comfortable . We highly recommend kogakuro and definitely intend coming back - hopefully to more snow next time.

Review 4:Very nice manager can speak English. She gives us advice on the transportation and which place is worth to go. Moreover, the free shuttle bus provide services whenever we needed.

Review 5:Limited selection for the TV channels. Small tv, bed on the floor, heater isn't that warm enough!

Review 6:The view from the window! It's lovely to see the snow outside connecting to the mountain.

Review 7:Uphill trudge to Akakura Onsen lift.

Review 8:Top of the list is the hospitality and helpfulness of Mieko and her excellent team. They really made the difference in a ski area which very much caters to the local market. Then there are the onsen and the occasional Japanese breakfasts. Location is ideal except for the Akakura Onsen slopes.

Review 9:Less than 5 minute walk and you are on the slopes! Owner Mieko will organise everything from pick up from train station to discount lift tickets. Breakfast was a banquet, with a choice of Japanese or western. Dont miss the fresh pancakes with homemade jams!! Relaxing in the onsen's after skiing all day is perfect.

Review 10:Nil!

Review 11:Location super close to the snow and village; breakfasts are out of this world delicious- the pancakes and home made jam are what drams are made of; and hosts are the most accomodating, helpful and genuinely lovely people ever!

Review 12:Not at all the fault of the hotel, I just struggle to sleep on Futons!

Review 13:Meiko and her staff were brilliant and so helpful. There was a warm, companionable lounge area with a log fire and comfy chairs. Breakfast was the best we ate on our ski trip. Onsen experience was great fun.

Review 14:Location was at the base of the Akakura Onsen chair and a short walk (or bus) to the base of the gondola. Rooms were quite large in comparison to traditional Ryokan rooms, with the entire hotel being an extremely welcoming environment with exceptional 'chill out after the slopes' areas to relax in. The staff really make this place ideal, catering to your every need.

Review 15:Hotel is showing it's age a little

Review 16:Helpful/friendly/fun staff, room size is bigger than many others in Japan, great location (close to lifts/food), buffet breakfast

Review 17:The bar/ common room with fireplace is a lovely place to hang out at the end of the day. Mieko is a fabulous host and goes out of her way to make your stay fantastic.

Review 18:Mieko you were fantastic and made our stay! Helpful with anything and everything. I will be recommending hotel to family and friends. We will be back..

Review 19:Nice and welcoming staff. Lift/transport to Bus Station provided. Excellent location in Akakura Kansu resort with short ways to the local bar and restaurant scene. Close to ski lift entry.

Review 20:The outside onsen was a great experience. The owners and staff are helpful and friendly. The downstairs common room with fireplace is a great place to socialize and meet other travelers. The buffet breakfast is fantastic. Highly recommend this hotel.

Review 21:hotel staffs are very nice. They can speak english and help us with everything. The wifi at the hotel is very good. Onsen is very nice esp after skiing all day long. Hotel is about 5-10 min walk from ski slope. Many restaurant around the hotel and most people in town can speak english.

Review 22:Very basic and extremely dated room and facilities, eg peeling paint, no kettle, chipped furniture, very slippery lino bathroom floor, nowhere to even hang towels, limited cleaning during stay, not soundproof. Amazed at such a high rating. Felt like we were on a 1970s school excursion.

Review 23:Good position, clean, great breakfast, lovely kind and helpful staff, nice view from room.

Review 24:Food / breakfast - pancakes are a must Staff - extremely friendly, especially 'mum' - helped us with travel tips, doctors and anything else local Rooms - bigger than the average Japanese room Onsen - been around a long time and still very hot! (and clean) Pick-up from the station

Review 25:Nothing.

Review 36:It's not luxurious but the location is amazing, the rooms are a good size, staff are fantastic and the onsen is amazing.

Review 37:Japanese feel, helpful staff, very good breakfast, perfect location

Review 38:Path to skished was witheet covered in snow or slippery.

Review 39:Onsen, staff, yoghurt at breakfast after days of rice, central location to restaurants

Review 40:Very friendly staff and a lovely onsen

Review 41:Great location, onsen and breakfast..cannot fault

Review 42:the facilities were kind of old and not very clean

Review 43:the hostess was very helpful and friendly, goog breakfast and loction for skiing

Review 44:nothing

Review 45:Staff were really nice and friendly, especially Mieko-san. Breakfast was my favourite.

Review 46:Absolutely nothing

Review 47:Great experience: great service, staff's exceptionnel kindness, essential, big and traditional rooms, incredibly cozy atmosphere: a dive into Japanese traditions and culture. A quiet waking up surrounded by beautiful mountains, followed by a rich Japanese / Western breakfast. Relax in the (indoor and outdoor) onsen, a cup of green tea in the room. This hotel guarantees the warmness and relax everybody looks for during a vacation. The owner is fanstastic: she finds the perfect solution to any problem or doubt and is always willing for help. We've been kindly picked up by car from Myoko kogen's station, and on the way back they proposed us a nice tour of the Myoko lake before taking our train. Great location, great hospitality and great cleanness. We could not be more satisfied and we wish to come back soon.

Review 48:Nothing, was a great stay

Review 49:Great location in central Akukura. The owner Meiko was super helpful, friendly and loved a good laugh. Staff were super polite and did everything to make our stay pleasurable. Hotel rooms were Japanese style, good size room, clean and comfy...The snow helped too...

Review 50:We absolutely loved this place. The accommodation feels like a very large place so you are not living in the pockets of other guests. The buffet breakfast is nothing short of amazing, the communal sitting room is nice and mellow and has a big open fire. The staff are super friendly and helpful (standard for japan) and the owner will go out of her way to help you. The accommodation has its own indoor and outdoor onsens which are very well kept. The japanese style rooms are very comfy and traditional. There is complimentary japanese tea in the rooms which is replenished twice daily and is a nice touch. The rooms are cleaned every day. The kogakuro is located a very short walk from the Akakura Onsen lifts. Akakura Kanko can be reached via these lifts or the Kanko lifts can be walked to directly although they are slightly farther. Other Myoko resorts can be reached via free shuttle bus which is short walk from the accommodation. We will definatly be returning in the not too distant future.

Review 51:Rooms a tiny bit dalapidated but just cosmetic, perfectly comfortable. Wifi in room would be nice.

Review 52:Wonderful staff, very helpful and friendly. Good location for restaurants and ski lifts. Good ski storage areas and drying room. Lovely common area for sitting in comfort for wifi. Good breakfast and Onsen.

Review 53:Nothing!

Review 54:We loved everything. The staff was super friendly and accommodating - we felt like old friends when we left just 4 days later. It has a cool old school ski lodge vibe with large rooms, ski storage, a heated locker room to dry your gear and boots and even free to borrow galoshes for tromoing downtown. Perfect location in the middle of everything. Delicious breakfast.

Review 55:Japanese style bed and pillow were too firm and uncomfortable. Did not have good nights sleep.

Review 56:Staff, location, food, Onsen and atmosphere were all great.

Review 57:Great stay at Kogakuro. Hostess Meiko went above and beyond to ensure that all needs were met. Specifically, pointing out any necessary locations around town (rental, restaurant, karaoke!) but even more so when helping with travel. For example, when trains were cut due to severe snow she insisted in helping figure out the best travel arrangements for those staying at the hotel, going above and beyond in helping. Great pick up and drop off from hotel. Fun outdoor Onsen. Cozy common room for relaxing, and walkable to bars+restaurants right across streets 10/10 would stay again

Review 58:The internet strength wasn't the greatest and only available in two locations.

Review 59:The staff were so friendly and helpful. They work so well at making Kogakuro a very nice place to stay.

Review 60:Not a thing

Review 61:Loved the hotel. Mieko, one of the owners ran the desk, served us breakfast & was unbelievable. What a gracious wonderful woman. She helped make our entire stay easy, from making dinner reservations to helping us with transportation, including picking us up at the train station. Breakfast was great with plenty to eat. Meeting people at the wifi hotspot in the lobby & enjoying the great onsen, could not of had a better time. Our whole group of six loved it.Thank you so much Mieko. Hope to see you again some time!

Review 62:The building is quite old and not in great shape. The onsen is quite nice but everything else could use a lot of work.

Review 63:The staff here is superb. They are incredibly friendly, extremely helpful and made the stay very pleasant. The location is also quite convenient.

Review 64:The front entrance is very modest, but let that fool you. This is the best place to stay and ski in Myoko / Akakura.

Review 65:Amazing staff, Meiko the lady who runs the place speaks life saving English. She helps with everything. How to onsen, getting shuttles to resorts, train status, road conditions and best places to eat. The onsen is a blessing, it's a must after a hard day skiing. The breakfast is a great combo of euro/Japanese food. The rooms are authentic, comfortable and the teas in the room are delish. Staying here made my stay. They picked me up at the train station. And you can walk to two ski areas, and bus/taki/shuttle to a bunch of others.

Review 66:Meiko was a wonderful host who went above and beyond to ensure the comfort of her guests and to help in anyway she could with advice, travel arrangements and trains/flights especially in times of crises like the Tokyo Snow Storm! Also fantastic food! Overall a very affordable place to stay for a Japanese ski holiday.

Review 67:First impressions reflects tired look.

Review 68:Rooms warm and spacious. Close to ski lift and village. Wonderful staff with great knowledge of english. Great indoor / outdoor onsen.

Review 69:it would be good to have a WIFI connection in the rooms and not only in front desk area

Review 70:very friendly and helpfull staff, good breakfast- japanese and western too, warm and comfortable japanese style rooms, nice onsen with outside rotenburo , close to village and ski areas

Review 71:Could do with some work,it's a it run down

Review 72:The staff were exceptional A great onsen Close to everything

Review 73:Beds were a bit hard. Wifi reception poor

Review 74:very friendly helpfull management. Good value.

Review 75:rooms with views indoor and outdoor hot baths pancakes for breakfast dinner with sushi and hotpot helpful staff lounge with fire

Review 76:Ticked every box for me. Staff are excellent and Meiko is the best host you'll find. The hotel takes you inside Japan.

Review 77:The wifi doesn't work well if the place is busy.

Review 78:The onsens are great after a big day skiing. The staff are very helpful and polite.

Review 79:Smoking in hotel lobby and ski room separate from boot room

Review 80:The Onsen, great breakfast
