Reviews for Hotel Casa da Calçada Relais & Chateaux

Review 1:It is such a shame that this is not an adult- only hotel as we had planned to use the pool area on the second (and last) day we were there but changed our mind as two families with young children completely monopolised it and were very, very noisy with no respect for the other guests. We were also due to eat in the restaurant that evening but discovered that one of the families was also booked in so we cancelled (who takes 2 young children to a Michelin starred restaurant??!). Perhaps there could be two sittings so that families could eat earlier? However, we were quite glad we had cancelled as the restaurant is quite large and far too bright and impersonal for dinner (especially for the price). It should be noted that the restaurant choice in Amarante is very limited, especially on a Sunday night!

Review 2:Wow, this hotel is amazing and was definitely one if the highlights of our stay in Portugal. It is in a fantastic location in beautiful Amarante - great view over the church, monastery and bridge. We were given a free upgrade on arrival and so had an executive suite with a room over the river. The room was beautiful and the bed was extremely comfortable. The outside terrace was great for a pre-dinner cocktail with lovely views over the river. The staff were all fantastic and the breakfast buffet was the best we had in Portugal by far. A beautiful hotel and definitely great value for money. Fairly expensive (for Portugal) but definitely worth it. They also produce lovely wines - the sparkling was especially good.

Review 3:Room for improvement with breakfast - hot food should be freshly made to order for such a fancy hotel . Had great difficulty finding hotel due to one way system around the town and no sat nav

Review 4:Fabulous location - beautiful room with a view.

Review 5:A grand luxury hotel. Perfectly located by the old Bridge across the old church and river. Great views from the window. Great atmosphere and ambiance. Great outdoor pool. Superb restaurant. Breakfast was with large selection. Free WiFi.

Review 6:Basic breakfast - one of the responsible for the breakfast room was systematically not happy, a bit of a bad mood to start the day while on vacation ! Lack of comfy common areas.

Review 7:The personnel (in particular Luis) will make everything to make you feel at home - resourceful, informative, kind reception desk !

Review 8:Service was a little slow sometimes. It felt like they could have done with more staff.

Review 9:It was a perfect spot - beautiful surroundings, relaxing and quiet without being dull.

Review 10:The driveway is daunting, to say the least, and the rooms could be freshened up just a bit. But overall, this is a wonderful hotel and I highly recommend it.

Review 11:The restaurant was fantastic for both breakfast and dinner. And the pool, while chilly, was lovely

Review 12:Hotel rooms some what tired. Restaurant menu very avant-garde with no concessions to anyone just wanting a straight forward meal. Lack of signage to hotel Expensive for what you get on comparison with other "top end" hotels in area.

Review 13:suite was good size, WiFi OK,

Review 14:Restaurant. Felt like the wait staff was in training -- diffident and not fully informed. Both sommelier & waiters simply recited the patter as they poured or presented a dish but were unable or unwilling to discuss anything fully or to answer questions. We certainly would not choose the wine pairing again. Odd not to be greeted by a maitre d' when entering a restaurant of this presumed stature. Perhaps its a better experience on nights other than Sunday.

Review 15:View from our room, accommodating staff.

Review 16:Wish the room had a balcony vice windows. The beds were a bit hard but typical of Europe.

Review 17:Room decor, spacious bathroom, view of city/river, wonderful outside bar area, gardens, generous breakfast buffet.

Review 18:The Michelin-starred restaurant is superb, the historic hotel is charming and the setting is beautiful. The staff are warm and engaging. What's not to like? Well perhaps the price tag. But if you can afford a night or two, it is definitely worth it.

Review 19:Felt it was a little expensive given the location in a small but pretty town Would have liked more choice on the set menu in the food package. Drinks offered in the food package not up to standard, why serve a Vinho Verde in a Michelin star restaurant? Very disappointed with this package, wished we had just gone for the room and chosen from the menu

Review 20:Upgraded to a suite Excellent bar service had the best gin and tonic ever with their infusion kit Very good breakfast Staff went the extra mile with genuine smiles

Review 21:The climate doesn't allow for using the beautiful garden park and terrace facilities during the winter season

Review 22:Beautiful, romantic setting Excellent cuisine Professional staff Ideal location for day trips to surrounding Oporto's old harbour,Douro vineyards, mountain area.

Review 23:No concierge or any staff to welcome at entrance to support with luggage and parking. Expecting a guided tour to present the commodities. Executive room means view to rear street. Value for money - poor.

Review 24:Location Wifi

Review 25:Was only there for 1 night.

Review 26:This property is well done. From the updating of a small castle to a hotel to the staff, meals and location. We had a suite with a parlor that overlooked the river and the city and it was well appointed. We had a very enjoyable dinner in the Michelin starred restaurant located on premises as well as a nice breakfast buffet in the morning. Staff was always anticipating your needs but weren't intrusive. Lastly the riverside location and the short walk across the bridge made this an ideal location. Certainly a property worth planning a stop around.

Review 27:It is necessary to book for dinner and they do not guarantee availability for residents unless booked 24 hours ahead. However there are good restaurants locally but not Michelin starred.

Review 28:Absolutely gorgeous old villa with fabulous history. Beautifully fitted with so many lovely little touches in the decor. Great bedroom with view over the river of the church (going to miss the chiming of the clock tower!) Fab dining room too.

Review 29:Service in the swimming pool needs to improve: in the bar of the swimming pool, we had to use the phone and waited for 15 minutes before speaking to someone.

Review 30:The room was very comfortable. All the areas of the hotel are very charming, decorated in classical style. The swimming pool is vey beautiful. The restaurant is suberb, one michelin star, a wonderful treat.

Review 31:This is a very good hotel but not exceptional and given the location in a small and not very interesting town I find that it is not great value for money.

Review 32:A very comfortable room albeit just under the roof. Given that the hotel was not full and we paid the price for an executive room it was disappointing to be given a room which is not representative of the status of the building. We dined in the Michelin-star restaurant which was good but not exceptional. Service in the restaurant was excellent and staff were very friendly. Unfortunately, there were only two couples dining which made the large room feel rather empty.

Review 33:Very firm beds Lighting too bright for the evening meal

Review 34:Absolutely loved the relaxed atmosphere, nothing was too much trouble , the staff were most helpful and attentive and the view over the river was wonderful. The decor and surroundings are in keeping with the age of the building and the restaurant with its Michelin star was a real bonus. We ate from the a la carte menu, 3 courses and had coffee and a bottle of wine for less than a £100, and there were some great surprises throughout the meal. Just so thrilled that we stayed here for 4 days before heading down to Cascais.

Review 35:Indoor activities missing, and it was raining a lot during our stay.

Review 36:Staff naturally and extremely nice. Excellent restaurant.

Review 37:My room -a single- had little natural light .

Review 38:Sheer luxury -historical building full of great views from the downstairs rooms .

Review 39:Everything: the location, the food, but mostly the great staff!

Review 40:Grumpy unhelpful reception staff.

Review 47:Excellent service and amenities, wonderful on site restaurant. Classic and old-school.

Review 48:Not good Wi Fi in room

Review 49:Our third stay just love everthing about the hotel.Do not change

Review 51:Front Desk very helpful and friendly. Jose in the restaurant at dinner was excellent - as were the other staff.

Review 52:Breakfast just average plus.

Review 53:Amarante is charming town. Dinner in hotel excellent but quite expensive.

Review 54:Great position, staff could not do enough and very friendly

Review 55:Location and the food

Review 56:A lovely retreat. The staff are very efficient and friendly.

Review 57:Don't miss the Michelin stared restaurant Largo do Paço. Deliciouse!

Review 58:Location. People. Free parking. BF. Baaaar!!!! All is perfect, thank you!

Review 59:Extremely difficult to find access streets to the place. Nav equipment no help.

Review 60:Very pleasant host and hostess. Nice swimming pool.

Review 61:Not much to see in Amarante.

Review 62:Pretty hotel and grounds. Wonderful Restaurant.

Review 63:Style. Service. Food

Review 64:Nothing.

Review 65:Beautiful hotel with excellent restaurant. Staff extremely helpful.

Review 66:It was very good. We enjoyed our stay in all respects

Review 67:We booked this hotel several months before arrival date. It was a treat in a good hotel (supposedly) with a pool, gardens and renowned restaurant. 6 days before check in and when we had already arrived in Portugal, the hotel emailed us to say 1)couldn't use the restaurant as fully booked 2)because of an event (turned out to be a wedding) both the pool and gardens could not be used. What a let down and too late for us to make changes. Why on earth did they not give us more warning of a wedding which would have been booked months ago. On arrival and despite our protestations, they said sorry but there was nothing they could do. We were shown our room only to find out it was over the bar with thumping music underneath - hardly relaxing. Back down to reception to say room not acceptable. Eventually, we were shown a room on a higher floor. This was a better class of room, but we only got it because of the noise. It was never offered, nor was anything else, not even a complimentary drink, as recompense for no pool, gardens or restaurant. We still had to pay the original price for the facilities which were denied to us. What appalling customer service and a huge, huge let down.

Review 68:Superbly comfortable hotel in a great position in the centre of town. A room overlooking the river is recommended. Do not miss eating in the restaurant. We found the food, service and value to be excellent. Breakfast is also very good.

Review 69:Leaving was hard but arriving more so...the entry way from the main road turn-off is right on a street corner and a hill: tricky even for the best of drivers (like me).

Review 70:We liked just about everything. This is an exceptional hotel of top quality. The Michelin restaurant was not only superb but offered an excellent 35 Euro fixed menu (changed by the week). A la carte choices were also reasonably priced. The room was fantastic and staff extremely helpful.

Review 71:Some of the finishes not to Relais et Chateaux standards (carpeting). Restaurant menu too focused on modern cuisine to the detriment of agreement. Pool closed in spite of season (not heated?).

Review 72:Prime location very close to the center of historical Amarante. Classical building well updated. Nice staff. Reasonable price for the category.

Review 73:Well it is a Relais & Chateaux and a one-star Michelin restaurant.Everything was just perfect and the city is worth some hiking around as well.

Review 74:the rooms did not have enough light

Review 75:the quietness. the place is not far away from other interesting and beautiful towns and one can easily get a bus. the staff is very nice as well as the food

Review 76:We liked everything about this hotel. We had a beautiful roomoverlooking the river and church. The food in the Michelin rosetterestaurant was an experience in itself.Staff were friendly and helpful.Very clean and splendid bathrooms with nice toiletries

Review 77:One of the truly great and unique hotels. Loved the history, antiques and architectural embellishments. Restaurant was fabulous. Could not have been better. Staff was most accomodating and helpful.

Review 78:The quality of breakfast was not as good as you would have thought from this kind of hotel. They serve mostly buffet and we had far better in lower category hotels. You'd also expect to have the coffee in the coffee and tea in the table.

Review 79:This is an excellent hotel in a beautiful city of Amarante. The rooms are big and the view to the river is remarkable. The staff was superb. It was also easy by the car (they will park it for you and you don't have stress abou anything). I'd strongly advice you to eat in the hotel's restaurant. We had both lunch and dinner there and were pleased with the quality of the food. They also make their own wines. We'd gladly spend there a longer period.

Review 80:The Internet was very slow. Upload speed was so slow that it took several minutes to load one picture.

Review 81:Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Large parking area. Room was spacious and well-appointed. The hotel setting was lovely.

Review 82:We only stayed for one night and enjoyed the hotel immensely. The hotel is extremely well located near all Amarante's main attractions: the stone bridge, São Gonçalo Church and Museum Amadeu Souza Cardoso. Excellent choice!

Review 83:Beautiful house and gardens in a very scenic location with excellent facilities. IFirst saw the hotel last summer (2011) and have been looking forward to staying there ever since. Would like to stay longer in future to appreciate it fully.

Review 84:The internet connection was feeble.

Review 85:This is a very comfortable hotel in an excellent location (next to the old bridge). The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was spacious and well appointed with a large bathroom and separate dressing room. The restaurant is an experience not to be missed; the menus can be changed and varied and you have the option of matching wines with each course, all of which were first class. It is comparatively expensive but definitely well worth the money.

Review 86:Beautiful building, wonderful town by the river, excellent food Very and helpful and friendly staff, everyone who worked at the hotel was very professional but personal.

Review 87:Dining there is pricy, but if you bite the bullet and pay, the food was amazing.

Review 88:It is the best hotel experience I have ever had. The staff were amazing, attentive yet not under your feet, and very friendly. The wine cellar is a must see.

Review 89:In our 18 day trip through Spain and Portugal, Hotel Casa da Calcadawas the very best. We will be booking at more of the rc hotels for ournext trip. Rdf

Review 96:Everything was superb. The accommodation, staff, food and location were wonderful.

Review 97:The food at the restaurant is simply superb, truly outstanding.

Review 98:The location was beautiful. Our room had a great view of the river with a balcony overlooking the bridge and the church of St. Goncalo.

Review 99:Extremely difficult to drive through gate into hotel
