Reviews for Villa Augustus
Review 1:Nothing much to see in the surrounds of the hotel, need to walk or take the bus to historical centre of Dordrecht.
Review 2:Very friendly and caring staff, a unique hotel and outstanding restaurant with ingredients inspired by the surrounding gardens. Clearly they take a lot of pride in the story of the hotel which overlooks a confluence of rivers.
Review 3:It would have been nice to have a bathrobe to relax in and slippers as the floor was cool.
Review 4:I liked the unusual design, the homely feel, the gardens and the restaurant.
Review 5:the hotel is so original and nice. Staff is friendly, rooms are big and clean Not far from city center (15 minutes walking). you can take a boat to Rotterdam easily (ask the clerk). A great discovery!
Review 6:Difference between breakfast supply on Sunday and Monday (much less choice) No hotel facilities
Review 7:Genuine place Scenic view from tower rooms Cosy garden Easy to get to centre
Review 8:We stayed two nights, but our room had not been cleaned! Minor detail: no mirror in the room (only in bathroom), bathroom gets very humid. Restaurant staff is young and inexperienced so service was slow and not so good (food and atmosphere were good).
Review 9:Very nice and special architecture. Style is very consistent with lots of attention to details. Nice garden where they grow vegetables. Nice and good restaurant. Very good breakfast with local and fresh products and not too expensive.
Review 10:Beautiful converted building in well designed and attractive gardens. Convenient to the old town, the Waterbus to Rotterdam and 20 minutes walk from the train station. Friendly and attentive staff
Review 11:No bad experience. The room we booked was great for me, close to the entrance and very convenient. (I walk with a cane).
Review 12:The room we stayed at was very convenient and clean. The restaurant was great, very busy and good food. The service in the restaurant was a little slow but very good. A little noisy. The family reunion was great we had and was much enjoyed thanks to great service.
Review 13:An excellent and very different hotel. The garden suite was quaint and very comfortable. Restaurant is great as always with excellent fresh food cooked whilst you watch.
Review 14:We had both dinner and breakfast. On both occasions we were not made to feel welcome. Staff were young and untrained and quite disinterested. Had to wait a while for someone to take us to our table and despite speaking English had to go and find a waiter after ten minutes of waiting for someone to come to our table, to get an English menu and a drink. The restaurant was not even that busy. When you ask for eggs, bacon and tomatoes for breakfast (each at an extra charge on top of the buffet breakfast) then I think it is not unreasonable to expect them on the one plate together, rather than on two small ones. Also no toast. I have eaten there before and the food was delicious, this time it was very mediocre. No coffee machine or robes in the rooms.
Review 15:Good location. Quirky decor and beautiful gardens. It is gorgeous. Hotel reception staff were welcoming, friendly and good.
Review 16:The warm welcome you get when you arrive at Villa Augustus tells you that you are in for a treat. All of the staff are helpful and considerate doing many small things to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The restaurant is excellent and the service prompt and efficient. Great food and wine list. Beautiful gardens to walk around and to stop and admire the vegetable patch which really is a maintained with love and constant attention. Plenty of quiet places too in the garden to sit and talk or read until it is time again to enjoy the hospitality of this wonderful hotel.
Review 17:Nothing
Review 18:Great view we had from the tower over the water. Staff always willing to help with anything. Our Dutch was not good at all but they helped us and spoke good English. Food was just what we like, good food cooked well, great sauces, and good veg.
Review 19:Wifi was very poor. Not sure why, it's not difficult to organise.
Review 20:Stunning views, a really well designed beautifully maintained garden (keen gardeners can get some really good ideas from it), peaceful, not near the centre of town but the bus is right there. We are most definitely going again.
Review 21:Nothing.
Review 22:We stayed in one of the rooms carved out of the old water tank. Exposed steel plate and rivet heads remind you of its previous life. Spacious, oozes design - it would give Kevin McCloud plenty to wax lyrical about. In one word - wow. Staff were friendly & helpful. If you are only staying for a few days then the attached restaurant is the only place you'll need to eat, and booking is recommended - it seems very popular with the locals.
Review 23:Nothing - and staff were very, very helpful.
Review 24:Wonderful hotel, with beautiful gardens. Terrific restaurant attached, which seems to be deservedly popular with the locals and gets very busy. We had two different rooms on third floor in the reservoir and they were both delightful, one with a view of the garden and one with a view over the water. Well worth the trip to Dordrecht to experience this hotel ( we went by waterbus from Rotterdam - 4 euros each, a bargain!)
Review 25:No free wifi was available. Would have been useful.
Review 26:The gardens were beautiful and the family room was great. Loved the big bath in the bathroom. Children liked the double bunk bed and the funky furniture. Very peaceful. Staff nice. Restaurant very good. Food delicious.
Review 27:I was traveling with my husband and 18 month old son. Our first room was nice, we did have to watch out for the windows, because if he climbed on a chair, he could easily fall out. This was the case in all 4 rooms we saw. The second room that we had was a duplex with riveted metal floors. needless to say this was an insanly redicyulous room to give to anyone with a child, really of any age. We asked for our room to be switched and after a third try, we finally got anther nice room on the first floor. They do say this is child friendly, though, I would not go here again with children, unless they were much older. The original room they gave us even had a door to a tiny balcony that was on the 6th floor, that just gave me nightmares! We happened to be there during a heat wave, there is no ac, as you do find in most euro hotels. However, the restaurant was absolutely unbearable in the heat. i would suggest some industrial fans. Breakfast was not included (we had had lovely breakfasts either included or for 8 euros in other places). Not to many options. Also, my mothers mini fridge was not working and they told her that she had to come down to get a cold drink. With 36 rooms, I do no understand how they did not offer to bring her a cold drink. Staff was nice, but a little upity and definitely not overly hospitable.
Review 28:This was the first time visiting Dordrecht in a hotel. My previous visit, I had had lunch at the Villa and was in awe of the gardens and local cuisine. The Gardens are Beautiful and one of the main reasons for staying here. Offers a Unique experience. Since my mom was staying there as well and we stayed in two different rooms I was able to see the variety. Some rooms are much more comfortable then others. Easy Bike Rental at a good rate was also a plus. The restaurant is very good, but I think mostly for dinner, however the omelet is good in the morning. The over all styling of the grounds , rooms, shop etc is very nice. As an artist I can see all of the care taken in the details. It is a unique and creative place. Would recommend for young couples. Boutique, not luxury.
Review 29:The top floors as well as the tank room totally unsuitable for children .Two years ago there was a heat wave.Time to put some industrial fans in the kitchen and restaurants.
Review 30:The garden and the restaurant .
Review 31:Lack of choice of children's meals in the restaurant.
Review 32:Ground floor apartment opening straight onto the garden where the children could play and my husband and I sat of an evening. Really relaxed atmosphere around the grounds where they grow a lot of the restaurants food.
Review 33:No curtain in the room so I woke up at 5am - No proper Wifi, in fact it never worked - The TV is really small and the quality is very poor, not a big deal when you are there with your wife and your kids but when traveling alone for business, this is not the same situation.
Review 34:The location of the hotel and the restaurant
Review 35:such an amazing property. you dont even have to leave if you dont want to. but if you would like to walk to the city center, its only about a 10 minute walk through a neighborhood, very safe. again cannot stress how beautiful the hotel, the garden, and the restaurant are. right off of the water.
Review 36:Breakfast should be included, it was nice but not enough choice for the money. Tea & coffee facilities in room could be more generous.
Review 37:Room was very good, spacious, comfortable bed and big bath.
Review 38:Would have liked a view of the river.
Review 39:A great stay at a very interesting place a hotel in a converted water tower. Wonderful service and food at the restaurant. Hotel staff walked the extra mile assisting - very helpful and friendly unlike the Dutch in the city. Would go back.
Review 40:The toilet felt like you were in a cupboard! Though not a reason not to stay there again!
Review 41:We booked the Lantern Room, so when the Christmas Market was cancelled on the Friday due to gale force winds & rain, we enjoyed spending most of the day reading & enjoying the view. We also ordered breakfast in our room & took it up there everyday.
Review 42:I've visited this hotel three times with friends, and always had a lovely experience. The hotel has beautiful grounds and great views of the area, along with comfortable and nicely designed rooms. The restaurant serves excellent food using products fresh from their gardens. A great place to stay when exploring Dordrecht!
Review 43:Very comfy spacious room with good views and a balcony. The decor at Villa Augustus is unique and warm. We have stayed twice once in the watertower once in the attic. Both nice but it was worth the extra 20e forthe bigger room in the tower. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere in the evenings. Food is decent but not as special as the place. I do recommend afternoon tea however. Breakfast is over priced and some a la carte options would be nice.
Review 44:A bit over priced, the windows rattled in the wind, but sorted the windows by packing with leaflets in the room!
Review 45:Huge beds, nice cotton sheets, excellent views, good gardens to stroll round and plenty of benches to sit outside. Good food at restaurant, friendly staff.
Review 46:Very highly recommended. An excellent concept, fabulous design, has to experienced. I've been all over the world, and this is one of my favourite hotels. The minute you enter the property via the bakery / market store, you know you are in for a treat. The hotel itself is an excellent example of a repurposed industrial site. Fabulous gardens, great restaurant, ticks all the boxes for an outstanding stay. Make sure you reserve at the restaurant because it is very popular.
Review 47:I asked for poached eggs at breakfast, as the hotel restaurant menu offered eggs cooked to your choice. I was told that the restaurant was unable to poach an egg!!!!! It beggars belief, and it spoiled an otherwise exemplary stay.
Review 48:The staff were extremely helpful and understanding. The room was spacious and very comfortable. TV reception was excellent and gave a wide range of channels, including BBC1, 2 and CNN. The hotel has a beautiful setting.
Review 49:Shabby chic is not my style but you get used to the outworn and dirty furnitures. A room with terrass has a bench and a table outside the window on a path in a public garden. A lot of people passing even late in the evening as this is the way to the restaurant. Full transparency in the room unless you close the wooden shutters, but on the other hand, you'll have no view either. We got used to people walking by and waving to us .... like monkeys in a cage
Review 50:Nice garden.
Review 51:No airconditioning in the room. Staff in the restaurant is a bit clueless at times.
Review 52:Lovely garden, great terrace, spent the night in one of the family rooms, which is in the garden. Great spot to see Dordrecht, take a bike to the city centre.
Review 53:WIFI didn't work in room 6, barely worked in the restaurant.
Review 54:Restaurant is really great, attention to detail in the decor, the gardens are relaxing.
Review 55:we expected to sleep in the water tower, but we slept in a building next to it. The room didnt have air conditioning. Normally that is fine, but not when it is 35+ degrees.
Review 56:the decoration the garden the atmosphere the breakfast
Review 57:Loved the querky retro feel with modern glam touches. The restaurant was excellent and they were totally up to speed re catering for Coeliacs. They had made my wide some fabulous GF bread which was superb. Our room was really comfortable and had a great view.
Review 58:Helpful, friendly staff, nice comfortable bed, best restaurant in town.
Review 59:I have found strange that as a hotel guest we had to book for breakfast.
