Reviews for Shimoda Yamatokan

Review 1:People with any tattoos (no matter how small) are forbidden from using public onsens.

Review 2:Beautiful location looking out across a surf beach. Room 301 is a great room - worth requesting. Private onsens are lovely and food is now available on the premises if you're not on a plan. Admittedly, meals are from a vending machine but very tasty. A nice place to unwind for a day or two. Shuttle bus runs back and forth from station to hotel every 30 mins in morning and afternoon (with a break between 11 and 2). Come here to unwind and enjoy the amazing views.

Review 3:The restaurant and food are expensive and they do no allow you to bring food into your room even though there is a fridge and a table in the room. The tea and snack were a bit of a disappointment compared to other ryokans I have stayed in,

Review 4:Amazing price for an amazing view. The onsens are very, very nice.

Review 5:The pool and surf area are a bit rundown.

Review 6:We were greeted with a big smile when we pulled up our car to the entrance. The guy even parked the car for us. For Yamatokan the best thing is the in room Onsen that is facing the sea. Most of the time we were discovering the cliffs and Geopark on the south side(Irozaki) of Izu so this hotel is an excellent jumping point for us to get around. If you wanted to head North ( Jugasaki's cliffs) it is also an ideal location. Of course it has a great seafront to walk and relax.

Review 7:Do not get a room on the GF (1st Floor). Although affordable, the cleanliness and nature of the room is below the standard of the higher levels.

Review 8:View is great. Customer service is exceptional.

Review 9:There was just an odd smell while we stayed there that was unpleasant. The balcony was beautiful but there were multiple spider webs with huge spiders on them which made me not want to be out there. Also, if you have multiple tattoos, you can't use public hotel facilities while the tattoo is showing.(we did know that prior to booking)

Review 10:Loved the friendly staff! Always so nice! We also loved our balcony view and easy beach access!

Review 11:no wifi is in the room and the shuttle bus is closed too earliy

Review 12:onsen is enjoyable, seaside view is pretty and the staff are very kindly and helpful. food and services are good. really enjoy to stay there.

Review 13:They have some things on the lower floors heading to the beach that are still being renovated.

Review 14:The staff and the location are excellent. Yuda and Mikiya are wonderful wait staff and gave gracious hospitality. All the staff were excellent and I loved the view of the surf from the room. Also, the onsen tubs were wonderful and with very few people.

Review 15:The place is very secluded, they have strange rules about buying food and drink and bringing into the hotel. Also the restaurants get fully booked quickly ruining one of our evenings where we had no dinner

Review 16:The beach front was good, with some friendly surfers making you feel at home

Review 17:Common areas felt tired and dated.

Review 18:The traditional Japanese dinners and breakfasts were superb. Our room was clean, well maintained and quite large. Great staff throughout the hotel, particularly the restaurant.

Review 19:Probably could do with a walk in restaurant, as it is in an isolated location for food.

Review 20:Breakfast and dinner were absolutely incredible and well value for money for the food and service you get. Staff were super lovely and helpful. Brilliant to wake up to such stunning views of the beach.

Review 21:Nothing

Review 22:Outdoor onsen overlooking the beach, spacious room, traditional Japanese meals, proximity to the beach, quietness, a place to retreat to relax.

Review 23:The building in concrete (but you don't see it from the Inside), some receptionists who do not understand any word in English (but others do).

Review 24:The place (overlooking a quiet white sand beach), the view from each room, the comfort, the Inside and outside oforu and the exceptional quality of the food.

Review 25:So we could only afford to go because we booked a package without dinner which was on offer. We figured we'd just buy food there, but the restaurants don't sell food without booking and it was quite a trek to find the nearest place. Just keep that in mind.

Review 26:The private onsen were romantic to the max. And they're cheap in the morning.

Review 27:No wifi in the rooms and lack of public transport from Shimoda town back to hotel at night.

Review 28:The open air onsen and close proximity to the sea. Relax and peaceful.

Review 29:Could have done with free wifi in rooms as well as the lobby area but that's it.

Review 30:The room was amazing, we had a Japanese style room and loved every minute of it. The staff were incredibly friendly and really helpful and the location was just stunning

Review 31:Very pleasant and relaxing experience of japanese lifestyle and tradition. The wonderful staff did their very best to make our stay komfortable, especially at breakfast and dinner times. Big traditional japanese rooms and nice onsen, both with an awesome bay view.

Review 32:1 our 26th wedding anniversary, requested a nice room on a high level was allocated a very tired room on level 1. 2. I have a mobility issue and was in obvious pain, staff would not assist with baggage from reception to room. 3. in our large experience, breakfast was sub standard was sub standard. 4. booked a wake up call with front desk, did not happen. 5. wall paper peeling off the wall in room, timber work very tired, shoji in need of repair. overall, this was a low level gaijin room and NOTHING like the photographs of the rooms on the website. 6 dining room booked out for dinner with only suggestions for local places quite a distance away. = taxi. 7 overall a poor experience.

Review 33:view was ok

Review 34:- unfortunately nobody at the reception desk could speak English - Wi-Fi in the room was very limited

Review 35:hot springs were really nice experience

Review 36:location, food, service.

Review 37:Very expensive. Some parts of the interior needing redoing, a bit.

Review 38:Loved the onsen, open through nigh. Food was incredible.

Review 39:Nice accommodation, pretty service by hotel staff

Review 40:Steep stairs to the japanese baths.

Review 41:Great views of the ocean. The japanese dinner was fabulous, so was the breakfasts. Quiet, comfortable room.

Review 42:That the whole place is in shut-down mode between 12pm to 3pm. Nothing moves, except the spiders.

Review 43:Close to the beach.

Review 44:no breakfast lunch and dinner

Review 45:Give my sincere thanks to the kind helps of the staffs in front desk.

Review 46:Decor slightly dated

Review 47:Excellent hotel, a bit past its prime, in an amazing location with friendly and accommodating staff.

Review 48:The staff are friendly and helpful. Food was great. The view of my room is beautiful. I stayed there for 2 nights and felt so relaxing.

Review 49:English ability of Staff was minimal

Review 50:beachfront location, onsen

Review 52:the beach, the incredible view, the restaurant and the staff very helpfull.
