Reviews for Shimoda Tokyu Hotel
Review 1:Entrance to the hotel is through narrow roads but the location of the hotel makes up for the same. You get a great view of the sea in the morning and islands nearby.
Review 2:The place is very outdated but in a cute way. Definitely a favourite of an older crowd but the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful so would still recommend.
Review 3:The staff were amazing. The pick up service to and from the train station are wonderful and really help you get around.
Review 4:Staff were a bit off. Friendly to other foreigners but was very blankfaced to me. Maybe because I have a tattoo and didn't speak muchNihonggo. Didn't even offer to help with baggages when we were aboutto leave but were very helpful to this German family who checked out thesame time I did.
Review 5:Location is quite nice
Review 6:Our non smoking rooms smelled of smoke. The second room we go was a bit better but still stuffy and overall very old. They certainly MUST renovate their rooms. Their Rerstaurants are overpriced and far from good.
Review 7:The locations and the views are outstanding. The swimmingpool is nice as well and in good conditions compared to the house.
Review 8:Some parts of the hotel are really outdated, make sure you book a nice deal and a have sunshine during your stay, in that case the hotel is nice (pool & beach)
Review 9:Nice location, 2km (steep) walk to small village with nice restaurants. Nice pool, close to a small beach.
Review 10:My wife has Celiac Disease (Gluten Allergy ( not the fashion hype type, the real deal)) We were told she could not eat at the hotel. We didn't feel welcome at all. It eventually took me 45 minutes to explain/arrange a special breakfast, which I was quite surprised about ( not in a positive matter ofcourse) They were extremely rigid about it. There's a sign to mention allergies. I wish we wouldn't have. My wife could just have taken the food we know to be glutenfree (fruit/vegetables/plain rice etcetera) The hotel desperatly needs a big serious renovation. Old worn down outride filthy carpets, bad beds. Stuck in the 60's
Review 11:The view is amazing. The pool and the onsen were very good. Some of the staff made up for whats mentioned in the dislike section.
Review 12:The hotel and the room facilities looked old at the first sight. What I really hoped is staffs are able to speak English with more confidence. I'll be very happy to have some casual talk with them.
Review 13:Definitely you should try to stay one night at their sea side room! I think I'll always remember the day when their staff led me to the room and opened the window curtain for me, I was shocked for the scenery I saw and cannot wait to scream out when she left. Breakfast is really good and the choice is plenty. You can watch the sea while you are having breakfast. The hotel location is good also, around it, there are lots of sights which deserve you to see.
Review 14:Decoration could be refreshed, it is a bit old fashioned, but remains charming. Access roads are a bit of a nightmare, roads in very poor state and some dangerous intersections to get on the main road to Shimoda down town.
Review 15:Perfect location, close to the beaches, having a car is the best option there, even if hotel shuttles are available. Friendly personal and nice swimming pool .The onsen are really nice, not luxurious but very relaxing. Plenty of splendid seafood restaurant in neighborhood.
Review 16:The hotel is old and the room price is NOT worth it. They call themselves a 4-5 star but it's more of a 2 star motel.
Review 17:The private beach is nice but don't expect it to be clean and trash free
Review 18:Quite a steep hill to climb if you choose not to use the shuttle bus. Both restaurants on the pricy side.
Review 19:Beautiful views from the guest rooms. The onsen baths were great. Had two excellent meals in The Phoenix restaurant .
Review 20:rooms very small, distance to next sand beach a little far, hotel already old, much too expensive for service offered
Review 21:Nice garden with nice view; also mountain view was nice
Review 22:The room I was in was rundown. A lot of chipped paint and very uncomfortable bed.
Review 23:The pool! It's amazing!! Good pizza house and small beach around the corner.
Review 24:The facilities are pretty old ..... The morning breakfast coffee was not good.
Review 25:Takahashi san was a great staff member. Mr. Sawaji (cook) was very good and nice! Sakurai san was also very helpful!7
Review 26:The pool closes already at 5pm - way too early. The restaurant prices are ridicously expensive: p.ex. 2800Yen for the breakfast buffet
Review 27:The hotel is situated 20' away from the city centre. Sitting on a hillside - you do have beautiful views from the parc & many of the rooms. The rooms are also really spacious - a bit old fashioned - but nicely decorated. The onsen of the hotel is really nice too - having an in- & outdoor pool.
Review 28:Pool hours were only 9-5 - very short. There was no shade around the pool. The Air Conditioner was horrible. The location meant that without a car it would be very difficult to get to a convenience store, restaurants or the beach. The beds were rock hard. Overall it was a discount but I wouldn't have paid full price for he room.
Review 29:We had a cheap deal on the room and had a nice time. The pool was nice.
Review 30:The hotel interior is outdated. Stains in carpet and furniture. Roomlooks bad and old. Even the hairdryer is from the 60's probably.Only go to this hotel when the weather is guaranteed amazing andyou're willing to walk to the city center for dinner (nice walk).
Review 31:The view is one of a kind. The garden is been taken care of and looksgood. Swimmingpool is clean and big
Review 32:I felt this hotel is little bit old^^ but enough good for stay.
Review 33:I requested cake service because this time was for my wife's birthday. It was really really nice and delicious. and view was great. Also, all staff were very kind. Thanks!
Review 34:You need a car to get to and around the place. The shuttle stopped service 5:20pm, and the hotel is located on a hill with a steep hike; the uphill drive way does not have pedestrian walkway, we almost got hit by drunken driver leaving evening banquet while walking back to the hotel. The closet convent store (Laweson) is 40 min walk away from the hotel.
Review 35:View of the sea and out door onsen. Room is quite specious.
Review 36:The breakfast buffet was satisfactory, however ot cost 2500 yen per person, which seemed overpriced for the quality.
Review 37:The view was fantastic, and the staff were just as good. Dinner at the phoenix restaurant was excellent
Review 38:A later shuttle into town in the evening would be ideal to enjoy dinner in town.
Review 39:The hotel is in a great location overlooking the bay. Delightful beach a few minutes from hotel. Ideal spot to get away from it all for a few days.
Review 40:The breakfast was expensive even with the discount offered by the front desk. The room smelled like smoke even though it was a non-smoking room. The AC was not working very well.
Review 41:The location was beautiful. Nice outside onsen and friendly English speaking staff.
Review 42:No bad experiences, just noticed that the wallpaper and carpeting are dated and in need of replacement.
Review 43:We had a beautiful view from our balcony. Once we picked our way down the steep drive, we enjoyed our scenic walks to town and along the shore. Town and its restaurants are very accessible on foot. The service was responsive and friendly.
Review 44:Nothing.
Review 45:Very good value for the room as it's quite large. Definitely need a car to get to the hotel, not sure if they provide shuttle service. The view is very nice from the hotel, will be especially good if you get a sea-facing room. Staff is friendly. Nice environment.
Review 46:There is no sandy beach, unlike some of the other resort hotels in the area.
Review 47:Shimoda Tokyu is the cliff top hotel closest to town, so is walkable from train station (backpack, not rolling luggage). Also has shuttle bus several times a day.
Review 48:It`s an hotel... of course it`s not negative in general, it`s just tastes. Nothing bad really.
Review 49:An hotel. Old style, perfect japanese service and very nice rotenburo (open air hot bath). If it`s your thing it`s very good. I prefer to go minshuku style. Very good position.
Review 50:Quite a distance from Shimoda train station. The last shuttle bus to hotel departs at 17:10.
Review 51:Comfortable room and good hot-spring with snurising ocean view! Great breakfast (the best western style in Izu during our trip).
Review 52:Bed was a bit hard
Review 53:Shuttle bus provided regularly every half hour between hotel and Shimoda station Onsen Friendly and helpful staff View from room was amazing
Review 54:If you don't drive a car, the hotel is up a steep hill. So if you are physically challanged, it would be a bit tough to go up to the hotel.
Review 55:Room booked was a family room with 3 beds and a sofa bed. The room has a balcony facing the hill and the ocean, amazing view. Helpful english speaking staff. Location is close to downtown and just by a beach.
Review 56:I didn't like that the public sand beaches were about 15/20 minute walk but when you got there they were spectacular . I recommend visiting them,
Review 57:I stayed in this hotel with my 15 year old daughter . We booked the hotel at the last minute. We didn't regret it at all. The free shuttle bus was waiting for us at the train station. Took us straight to this beatiful place on the top of the hill. I loved the service, everyone was very friendly, and many of the workers spoke Engish, we were welcomed with a hot green tea and some snacks. The views were spectacular , the best in Shimoda. The little beach down the hill was quite cute. We liked the hot spring outside
Review 58:The hotel is in a disgraceful state of repair. Maybe nothing has been changed in 20-30 years. Our room smelled like terrible mold. The window barely opens a crack, the fan in the bathroom did not function properly, the whole place is really in a terrible state. But the view is so great and the grouds are so wonderful that it does not matter.
Review 59:The location is superb and the view from the room is fantastic. Onsen facilities are also very good, and staff are friendly.
Review 60:While I can excuse the properties dowdiness and general lack of upkeep, I would think the Tokyu group would refurbish their properties at least once every 30 years or so. Everything is dated. Worst of all is cleaning, or lack thereof. The carpet in our room had hair and insects that clearing had not been vacuumed. The baths were also less spa and more public ofuros. Staff was friendly but looked like they could all send their uniforms to cleaning.
Review 61:The view from the lobby is tremendous. Buffet breakfast was fine.
Review 62:The treacherous walk down hill to the beach area which really isn't one of the nicer beaches in the area. The pool was closed and obviously closed a long time before we arrived based on the color of stagnant water in it. The building was rather dated, carpet, walls etc.
Review 63:The rooms were a comfortable size, the daytime view from the hotel was great. The staff was great. Plenty of free parking and wifi.
Review 64:More English information needed, especially in restaurant. Only expensive restaurants available. Shuttle bus did not operate in the evening, so could not go to town to eat.
Review 65:The view and location. Excellent breakfast. Onsen facility.
Review 66:We forgot to include breakfast in our booking and it cost a lot more to buy it in the morning. Large buffet selection.
Review 67:Loved the location and the onsens which look out over the coast. Wished we had planned to stay longer than two nights.
Review 68:Hotel was very old and run down. Thread bare carpet, dated and dirty interiors. Beds were old and very uncomfortable. The pictures online are not a good representation of the real thing.
Review 69:Location was lovely
Review 70:The price of the food. The schedules of the shuttle, they shoudl be more frequent and finish well later.
Review 71:Everythin, the onsen, the view, the gardens, the beaches, the breakfast...
Review 72:We didn't have a meal plan and the pricing for dinner/breakfast was unreasonable. The meal plan should be included for everyone and only Booking.com reservations seemed to be the only one without it included for this hotel.
Review 73:Location was excellent, since it put us within a 3-20 minute drive from the top 5 beaches around + downtown Shimoda. The hotel was clean (compared to other leading hotels in Izu) and the staff were friendly. The ofuro facilities are good.
Review 74:Hotel was a bit old school and run down, needs a lick of paint and just some TLC in general.
Review 75:Very helpful staff (those who could speak English), excellent location, amazing views, great onsen, nice all round relaxing vibe.
Review 76:Built in 1962, so a bit dated. Could do with a reno. Carpet is a tad smelly - a funky combination of cigarettes & industrial cleaning solvents. Both dining options were on the expensive side, so a third (kid-friendly) option would be nice.
Review 77:Well-trained, polite staff - felt the 'omotenashi' Japanese hospitality upon arrival. Decent rooms with brilliant ocean views. Nice gardens leading to a cool pool area (great for kids as well). For what we paid, it was a bargain. Recommend and will return.
Review 78:It is combine rest and leisure. The location is not really good from town, but the kind but take you off on the route.(Ferry road etc.) Room is clean and not so old as I expected. It is not a fancy nice one, but I feel real confortable with the crews. THanks.
Review 79:Almost nothing. In season the hotel is a bit expensive but, well hereis Japan :)
Review 80:The location of the hotel is superb. You have a magnificent view fromthe hotel grounds and vicinity is so quiet. Besides hotel is not thatmuch far from Izukyushimoda Station as it is stated in some comments. You can walk to/from station in 15 minutes and on the way there arenice places to see such as Perry Road. Hotel staff is one of thefriendliest I have ever seen.
Review 81:Lack of access to food for 2pm to 5.30pm. And you have to book table in advance because you may not even get dinner at 5.30pm. No atm or convenient store around. Lots of loud children. Old bathrooms and onsen. Not very welcoming entrance.
Review 82:Location is great with beautiful view. Very nice staff.
Review 83:Didn't like the breakfast buffet which was way over priced .... And not that good!
Review 84:We were grateful for one staff member Takahashi san . He spoke English and helped us very much ! Loved the location and the pool facilities!
Review 85:The double room was tiny and not what i was expecting. It was comparable to a single room in a cheap business hotel. I did see other very nice rooms on the same corridor though.
Review 86:Breakfast was good and staff were friendly. The pool and nearby beach were also nice although the pool closed at 5pm which is ridiculous.
Review 87:The quality of the rooms is HORRIBLE. Extremely old - the carpet is old and dirty, the mattress was very uncomfortable. The linen was VERY old and worn. Every morning we woke up with aches and pains because springs were digging into us all night. The hotel needs a good paint, new carpet, new bathrooms and new fixtures and fittings to make it worth the price that is charged. If this hotel charged half the price for the accommodation, then I wouldn't mind these negative aspects so much. However it is extremely expensive accommodation for the tired and run down rooms we viewed. The wifi was also terrible in the rooms and only accesible from the lobby. The swimming pool shut at 5pm, I would have preffered to stay there longer.
Review 88:This hotel was in a stunning location - I could happily spend a week sitting by the hotel pool looking out onto the mountain and ocean below. It really is an amazing landscape to see. The staff were also very efficient and lovely to deal with. If you are on a budget and dont want to pay for food at the hotel restaurants, there is a lovely little restaurant a short walk down the hill. Its in a very old but charming building with udon noodle soups with seafood caught locally and fresh that same day. There is a free shuttle bus to take you to and from the train station which is very helpful.
Review 89:Hotel was a bit dated and simply needed a bit of work to make it all round perfect.
Review 90:Staff were excellent - went the extra mile to make you feel special. Food was superb, good facilities. Very close to nice beaches
Review 91:Some of the other guests were not polite. There were some noisy children, who made you feel that this was not paradise.
Review 92:The location. It is close to the sea and sits on top of a hill, so you get a wonderful view, if you have a sea-view room. The garden is splendid. The pool is nice. The local beach is a gem, with good swimming in a clear, blue sea.
Review 93:Our room was very hot even with the air conditioning on. The beds were terrible, also the hotel only gave us one pillow for each bed. The restaurant was way overpriced as well.
Review 94:The view and the amenities were great.
Review 95:Hotel pool and beach needs a little climbing, restaurants in the hotel are pricer than those in Shimoda and not so good.
Review 96:Great location and a nice small onsen, very silent hotel, mostly japanese tourists, great garden and nearby Nabeta beach, pool is clean and beautiful.
Review 97:Maybe it's just my room, but the aircon wasn't working well.
Review 98:I got a great view of the ocean from my room. The hotel staff were attentive, efficient and best of all, friendly and professional. The dinner at Hamayu restaurant was pricey, but worth the experience of Washoku fine dining.
Review 99:no balcony not at a beach small room (well, it is Japan) wifi a little slow but for free pool is only open until 5 pm
Review 100:friendly staff nice sea view good restaurant very calm nice garden and green very close to Shimoda city (Perry Road) and Aquarium Shuttle Bus
Review 101:Very high location, hard walk for smaller/younger children
Review 102:Fantastic view and good location if you come by car. Close to the town and beaches. Large room, possible to sleep a family of 4 without having to book 2 rooms. Nice onsen, pool area and access to smaller beach (tough walk though)
Review 103:The room smelt of smoke. There was no non smoking option which was a huge shame. The hotel is 2km from the town which would actually be great if they ran their shuttle bus past 5pm! Pool also shuts at 5pm and there isn't a bar so not a lot entertainment wise in the evenings.
Review 104:The ocean view from the room was amazing. The pool was also nice. Staff tried to be really nice and helpful.
Review 105:A bit far away from the town
Review 106:I enjoyed so much beatiful view of the hotel and its surrounds.
Review 107:The beds were small and uncomfortable especially the pillows
Review 108:The view was amazing
Review 109:Less shuttle bus, a little expensive
Review 110:Great location
Review 111:dated furnitures
Review 112:staff very gently. Wonderful position
Review 113:There was none.
Review 114:Location, staff, WiFi, breakfast
Review 115:Amazing view, quiet location, and great gardens!
Review 116:Excellent location and high quality of food. Children are very welcome and can play in a highly safe environment
Review 117:restaurant was expensive
Review 118:lovely setting. pool great and the pool bar staff were really helpful and frendly. comfortable family room, beds comfy
Review 119:The views were pretty awesome.
Review 120:Restaurant services is not good
Review 121:Not overly foreigner friendly (trouble getting an adaptor) and limited shuttle times.
Review 122:Great view, and an interest retro feelings. Nice pool.
Review 123:Rooms are old and need renovation.
Review 124:Fantastic location
Review 125:Food is very expensive.
Review 126:Very nice view from sea view room. Clean and neat with spacious rooom
Review 127:rooms are tiny
Review 128:great hotsprings
Review 129:The staff was very helpful! They helped us navigate around the town and helped us ship our luggage with the takubin service forms.
Review 130:No fitness center, Food options limited
Review 131:Onsen, Pool, Location
Review 132:Hotel looks old and smell a little
Review 133:the location of the hotel and the beautiful sea view from room window; also the hot spring
Review 134:Room walls were not clean
Review 135:Scenary
Review 136:Location is great, the staffs are attentive and good food too.
Review 137:Great staff and idea location; ideal for family with young kids; would stay here again.
Review 138:Great location; also the services are very good; english speaking staff; very clean
