Reviews for YHA Motueka / Laughing Kiwi Backpackers
Review 1:We stayed 3 nights in the 3-bedroomed bach. Plenty of room for 5 of us. Spacious rooms with a good-sized kitchen. Laundry included. Walking distance to the shopping district for supplies. We did not test out the spa pool.
Review 2:Nice big kitchen with everything one needs. Common room feels very cosy. The property is split in 2 buildings and each have their own common room and kitchen. Gives it a nice homely feel.
Review 3:Lady there knew I had nowhere to go but just didn't want to let me in the hostel before check in time. I understand not being able to check in to my room yet but I don't get why I couldn't sit in the garden. Not very hospitable.
Review 4:Spacious hostel with big kitchen, livingroom and nice patio.
Review 5:The rooms didn't have good soundproofing, so we could hear noises from the common room and cars from the nearby road as we were trying to go to sleep. It's nothing you can't solve with a pair of ear plugs, though.
Review 6:Kitchen is quite small, but not a big deal.
Review 7:Location is perfect. Right in front of the Botanic Gardens and Canteburry Musian. Walking distance to the re:start mall, the Cathedral square and the Cardboard cathedral. The double room is big and bed is really confortable. The shared bathroom is like individual (just one person at once) and shower is very nice. They provided towels for free (very nice ones). The hostel is really big and clean - it has lifts and free private parking.
Review 8:Comfortable bed with lovely crisp cotton top sheet and pillow cases, but nasty bobbly nylon bottom sheet made sleeping difficult.
Review 9:Back lodge with its own spacious, clean and comfortable facilities. Open views.
Review 10:The other backpackers especially teenagers very messy and didn't like to clean up after themselves. Not much can be done about that though. The Spa was not working throughout my stay.
Review 11:Cindy the lady managing Laughing Kiwi Backpackers was pleasant helpful and always ensured we were comfortable (down there in the cold). The space we shared was kept warm in the morning and in the evenings when we arrived back. towels and bathmats were changed regularly. I would definitely want to stay here again. Free wifi was amazing.
Review 12:The only thing I could possibly frown on, was when you had a shower at night, the fan turned on with the light and blew cold air down onto you...but it was no big deal.
Review 13:It was extremely clean and comfortable! The price was right too. Easy access to everywhere I needed to go.
Review 14:Accessible, only 0.5hrs to Marahau and Kaiteriteri and walking distance to shops. I like the set up of the back house - wooden kitchen bench and dining table - fantastic! Heaps of space, clean toilets and bathroom, plus I find my bed so comfy even when Im at the top of the bunk bed.
Review 15:Having stayed in other backpackers we found the atmosphere a bit strange in the communal areas. Normally there is a bit of chat about what everyone has been doing and what they are planning but here everyone just had their heads down looking at phones or tablets and didnt really want to converse. This took the shine off another wise enjoyable stay.
Review 16:Everything was really nice.
Review 17:Three bedrooms and a lounge/diner, with good kitchen as well as the garden area.....and only a few minutes walk into motueka. It wasn't cheap but we hardly expected it to be with so much accommodation. Very good value!
Review 18:I stayed i first block, a lot of noise from street. Also where a few "long term stayers" are and they taking over everything (kitchen, lounge always tv on,...)
Review 19:Location, very nice staff
Review 20:Not too many beds / guests. Very nice lounge and outdoor sitting area. The hosts are very helpful and had some interesting insider tips on what to visit. Kitchen (and everything else) looked really new and clean, and it was easy to find everything. Cute little cinema nearby.
Review 21:Nothing.
Review 22:I stayed in this hostel ten years ago and it's still as brilliant as it was back then. Nice staff, very clean and a comftable common area to hang around and meet new people.
Review 23:The fire in the lounge was on a timer and it was freezing. We had to ask for it to be turned on but the owner had to be called out as the manager did not know how to sort it out as control was under the house! Fortunately the next night the fire was working.
Review 24:Good sized room , comfortable bed. Kitchen facilities were good. Need a car to get around.
Review 25:Very Cousy place Nice and big kitchen Comfortable twin bed room Clean and tidy facilities
Review 26:I did not meet the staff but they were very nice with me. All the facilities, kitchen, showers, toilets and room were very clean.
Review 27:We stayed in backyard, bright and comfortable.

Review 53:Friendly staff, good facilities, cosy hostel, clean and well maintained.
Review 54:hot tub was not working
Review 55:clean, cosy living room, laundry machine, good location
Review 56:The sound insulation is not very good, since we could hear clearly the conversion in our next door although we don't want to.
Review 57:The staff is really nice and show us some local information which is very helpful.
Review 58:Loved the location! Close to I-site and I had to take the bus the next morning from there, so that was good! Was a good, clean hostel. Everything you'd expect from YHA
Review 59:Location - Motueka itself has nothing to offer and Abel Tasman National Park is half an hour (by car) away.
Review 60:Very nice and well equipped kitchen. Friendly staff.
Review 61:Very clean hostel, airy kitchen with lots of equipment and nice outside area. Really liked the "shoes off" policy. Great location to visit Abel Tasman. Would come again! PS: Check out the Thai restaurant in town, very yummy!
Review 62:Some milk powder to go with the complementary tea & coffee would be great for the times you run out of fresh milk but need a cuppa!
Review 63:Modern facilities with comfy beds & sofas. Spacious living area & dorms. Lodge backs onto kiwi fruit orchard with view of mountains. Big verandah to sit on. 1min walk to shops & 20mins to beach. Helpful and friendly staff. Unlimited Wifi.
Review 64:-Leaving shoes outside. Was told this is a NZ custom, but I have found the opposite in my travels. Perhaps shoe cubbies inside would be nice.
Review 65:-Good washroom facilities -Good sized parking lot
Review 66:Several buildings quite spread out, with no shoes policy indoors. Despite carpets, extremely noisy corridor under foot until quite late at night and from early in the morning - may just have been the room we were in.
Review 67:Reasonable priced with a big comfortable bed and clean facilities. Good location for what there is in Motueka. Welcoming and friendly host.
Review 68:The best backpackers I have stayed in in New Zealand! Great clean roomwith good shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. In the heart ofMotueka so you can walk everywhere.
