Reviews for Hakone Suimeisou
Review 1:You should be aware that you will be sleeping on matresses on straw-mat floors. This is how it is supposed to be at a ryokan, but is perhaps not the best if you are elderly or have a bad back etc.
Review 2:The staff was very friendly, and gave us a great experience. They saw that we were tourists, and made a great effort to explain everything to us from what we were eating, to how to put on a yukata (bathrobe). Both the open air bath and the public bath was very nice. There was a small bathroom attached to our room, but we did not use it as it was much more tempting to have another soak and shower in the public bath before breakfast.
Review 3:It's somewhat pricey, but I supposed the hotel factored in its location as a plus point. When it came to changes, staff were somewhat inflexible. We wanted to book dinner the day we arrived in the afternoon but staff said it was no longer possible. Also, the breakfast was an additional cost tagged to the hotel bill, although at booking time, it was presented as breakfast included in the stay. Maybe it's translation hiccups or maybe it's just a sneaky way to up the bill, the jury is out on the matter.
Review 4:Enjoyed the convenient location of the hotel since it was 1 min away from yumoto station on foot. Room was spacious, was surprised to find toilet separated from the private bathroom as the toilet was at the room's entrance while the bathroom further in. Staff rolled up the futons as soon as we left for breakfast and were helpful explaining the wearing of yukata even for kids.
Review 5:None
Review 6:Very good location near to bus n train station. Outside there are two rows of shops with all types of local product n restaurant. The dinner n breakfast of the stay is good.
Review 7:Bathroom is small but this is same in tokyo. No toiletries are provided (towels yes). The traditional breakfast is disappointing.
Review 8:It is right opposite of Hakone Yumoto station, behind street of restuarants and shops. Very convenient! Some staffs were friendly, 1 even walked us to the bus stop to show us how to go Hakone shrine. The ryokan is beyond my expectation - clean and cosy and posh. The ¥2000 (50mins) private onsen experience is very worth it as it is clean, romantic and traditional, overlooking the green. Not like many private ones (in similar ryokan) which are tiled & full of slime. The room is roomy enough for 2.
Review 9:A bit pricey.
Review 10:Was a great experience getting to stay at a Japanese Ryokan and this one was great. Awesome baths to relax in and nice room to go back to. Very friendly staff that always tried to help.
Review 11:The Wifi connection in the room was fairly poor and we had trouble connecting our laptop. The bedding was the traditional Japanese futon, but would have benefited from Western Pillows.
Review 12:Great location and beautiful property. the staff were really friendly and attentive, and everyone was very helpful. The food at breakfast and dinner was expertly prepared and presented to us in our room. Amazing experience of Onsen life. The private baths meant I could experience the onsen without offending anyone with may tattoos.
Review 13:Food could be improved. Not as fresh as expected given a lot of the items were prepared well ahead of time.
Review 14:Good location, friendly staff, nice private onsen and comfortable futon. Fun first experience at a Japanese onsen ryokan.
Review 15:The room is very comfortable and the staff are very friendly. Hotel is near to the train station which makes travelling so much easy around Hakone. The breakfast and dinner served are fantastic and delicious and we really enjoyed the stay in this hotel.
Review 16:The whole Hakone area is overpriced, warmly advice to consider other destinations. The town is pretty much dead after 6 pm so it was tricky to find a place to eat since we didn't have half board. Staff was making jokes about bringing me a bigger robe since I was so big-sized, which was so out of place. We left our bags at the reception in the morning for storage but couldn't get access to them, for some reason, before check in time at 2 pm. So we had to wait there for over half an hour and they didnt want us to leave for that time either.
Review 17:Public onsen was nice and clean although, we were the only ones using it at the time we were there so we didn't miss a private onsen. Was nice to try out traditional breakfast.
Review 18:No wifi in room. Mosquitoes in rooms despite window screen. Fridge should be empty for more personal F&B.
Review 19:Good location, half board food quality was good and sufficient. Open air onsen was available at certain times
Review 20:It was very convenient to the train station and the private onsen which you had to book in advance, was very clean and nice. The traditional Japanese rooms were very clean and tidy, and we enjoyed our stay.
Review 21:Open bath and hot spring are a bit too small. Imagine it would be crowded if high season full house
Review 22:Very close to train station with less than 5 minutes and easy to locate. Staff are friendly. Place is quiet and relax. Good to have a break and relax holiday. Staff set up meal and futon in your room. It is also near the bus stops to different places around hakone.
Review 23:A bit expensive, but ryokan are generally more expensive than normal "western-style" hotels.
Review 24:Great experience in a ryokan. The hot-spring bath are very nice and the hotel also offers a private open hot-spring at an extra-cost.
Review 25:The all Ryokan experience is nice but I do believe it's overrated and therefore it's reflected in the price. The men's public baths are too public. Not that hard for someone from a nearby hotel/surroundings to have a peak at you. The Ryokan felt "old". I would probably choose another place if planning to stay in Hakone.
Review 26:The location is close to the train and the view to the back river. The dinner and breakfast were good and everything was clean as expected in Japan. The staff is friendly but in their own way, quite different from most other places we stayed, so in the first interactions might not be as you expect, if you've already been a few days in Japan.
Review 27:Very traditional Japanese experience with tatami mats to sleep on, shoji screen doors, onsen pool looking onto the river, kimonos to wear and wonderful breakfast served in your room. Also close to the train station.
Review 28:Decor is tired 1970s, slightly depressing. Large communal area but low ceilings and all a bit dark. I double booked a family room by mistake. My error, but the staff made absolutely no concession, making me pay double the rate for one night, which was cripplingly expensive. They could have taken a bit of money off! - or offered maybe a free meal or something. Despite being on the river, it did not have great views, and the rooms were a bit cramped. The hotel Senkei, while criticised for being a bit 1970s in a review I read, was much nicer and had a much better feel. Even without the booking error double charge, this hotel was not worth the rather expensive rate.
Review 29:Location was good but I would not recommend this hotel.
Review 30:I had to pay double because I had made two bookings (One which I did not know of) and right now that's very unacceptable.
Review 31:This was the best ryokan I've ever stayed in.
Review 32:Really close to Hakone Yumoto station, less than 5 mins walking. I arrived there a bit late than expected, however, the staff in the hotel still provided their service as promised. They are really nice people, even though it's a bit hard for us to communicate. One of my friend got a fever at night, and they kindly offered some medicine. Overall, great experience, definitely recommend this hotel to everyone.
Review 33:we was checkin at late night 10 pm . My 12 year old son made mistaken with double booked . the hotel manager selfish insist to took us with double stays , very selfish unbelievable this is a Japanese hotel . we stay one night hotel take us two nights stay .
Review 34:Wifi was not available in the room. Even though the room was clean and ready when we arrived at 11am, we were denied entrance until 2pm
Review 35:The onsen was very beautiful, calm and relaxing. The maid who prepared our food and room was also very kind
Review 36:Though we knew that they served Japanese breakfast, basic bread and egg or cereal could have been included for people like us who had trouble with fish for breakfast
Review 37:The sound of rushing water of the river outside your room was really soothing. The private bath facility is excellent!
Review 38:The staff were very friendly, and the hotel facilities were also great - especially the onsen. We were given a wonderful traditional Japanese breakfast on both our days there. All in all it was a wonderful stay!
Review 39:very expensive, but probably due to the booking period (week end in august)
Review 40:perfect location: accessible by walk from the ralway station, room with a nice view point on the river and the forest
Review 41:Dinner. Too much starchy food. Wide variety but taste is not so suitable. Appreciate the taste or food served by neighboring a Ramen restaurant .
Review 42:Location .
Review 43:Wallpaper in the room really needs repairing. Bathroom was so small I almost felt claustrophobic.( I'm 5'8).
Review 44:All the staff very helpful and kept our bags while we went sightseeing Mt Fuji.Loved the private rooftop onsen ( AUD20 approx for an hour).Slippers and robes in the room that we could walk around hotel in was nice and relaxing. We had a maid assigned to our room and she looked after everything. Traditional breakfast in our room was an experience and didn't know what half of it was but had to give it all a try. This hotel will give you a Japanese experience without being too expensive.Get out for dinner early as most restaurants were closed by 730. Restaurant next to hotel is open later.A 3 min walk from station so no need for taxi.
Review 45:The staff were very helpful and provided assistance whenever you needed. We had breakfast and dinner included to experience this traditional aspect of a Ryokan. Beautifully presented, and the taste depends on how adventurous you are. I enjoyed everything while the others were selective. The private onsen is a must for a couple.
Review 46:a bit pushy to finish the first course of dinner before the staff come back to serve 2nd course. Couldn't enjoy the meal peacefully
Review 47:- just 2, 3 mins away from Hakone-Yumoto station - staff are friendly and nice - nice and clean room - no smell as stated in some reviews - open bath would have been great when there is still light outside so that you can enjoy the scenery. It's a shame we went at 8pm and outside is all dark but still a very nice place - a great place worth money if you looking for Japanese ryokan experience
Review 48:The establishment being very traditional, don't expect too much flexibility on schedule of breakfast and dinner. But, if getting up at 7:30 is not a problem for you, then do not get disturbed by this comment!
Review 49:Very beautiful location by a small river, charming hamlet and luxuriant greenery and convenient next to the train station. The open air onsen is a very good idea. If you are looking for a very traditional onsen-ryokan this is the place.
Review 50:town shuts down at 19:00. so eat early or get take away from 7-11. which wasn't to bad actually.
Review 51:very close to trains and buses for exploring Hakone region. on side street off main road. Breakfast very unusual to western tastes. Staff make futon beds in the evening and put away for you at breakfast time.
Review 52:Nothing. Only after 6pm, all the shops nearby are closed. It's really quiet.
Review 53:Location. You can see the hotel from the train station. Staff are very friendly. The dinner and b'fast is typical Japanese style served in room. Really good. My husband and daughters like the private onsen very much. It's worth to pay Y2000 for 50mins for 1 room and share among your family.
Review 54:The ryokan was a little older but clean and comfy! The food was awesome and the private onsen was AWESOME! Staff members were friendly, helpful and understood English. I would definitely stay here again!
Review 55:- Town closes down at 18:00. Only a couple of places to eat after that - Property really needs renovation; stains all over the walls, closet doors, etc. - Staff not very helpful
Review 56:Location to tour Hakone
Review 57:Missed cleaning our sink one day, otherwise fine.
Review 58:Japanese meal experience in room was good--would like a little better food. Can try eating lunch in town for better value and food.
Review 59:All the shops and restaurants closed very early at 7pm or 8pm..be aware if you are not having dinner with your hotel itself.all attraction place located little distance from town and have to take bus go along the turning mountain road.
Review 60:Everything was awesome...we really enjoy ourselves so much there..I love the public baths and onsen, especially in the morning with the jungle view, peacefully, quietly, mind release..the traditional Japanese room design also impressed me(tatami).i like the yukata they provided too..
Review 61:As a foreigner experiencing a onsen is very embarrassing but was enjoyable and relaxing.
Review 62:The breakfast was delicious, experience a wide range of traditional food. Great scenery view.
Review 63:Staff's english was limited, but courteous nonetheless The hotel lobby does show signs of aging
Review 64:Very near the station Great surrounding for shopping local produce Good view of the small canal rear side of the hotel
Review 65:Dinner and breakfast have a lot of varieties but taste was just so so.. It's good to have meals in room but the time is very strict and they have to come to the rooms few times to set up and clean up everything which I felt a bit disturbing.
Review 66:Great location, staff very helpful
Review 67:Toilet and shower area is very cramped. Do not expect hotel style toiletries. Basic soap, toothbrush and a good towel each. English is not a spoken language here.
Review 68:We like the close proximity and central position, novelty of staying at a ryokan and traditional lifestyle. The onsen is a good relaxing experience if you like this style of hot bath. Japanese style breakfast set out beautifully by the hostess each morning at 7.30am.
Review 69:We didn't like that we couldn't stay here for more days because of our tight schedule.
Review 70:We loved everything this hotel provided for customers. The hotel was so closed to the yumoto station. The reception staffs were polite and give us a warm welcome. The halfboards were worthy and delicious. The onsen was nice and very comfortable espacially outdoor onsen. The room was reasonably priced compared to their quality of service. We loved this hotel!
Review 71:Friendly staff, delicious dinner and breakfast, comfort bedding, fabulous spring bath and convenient location. Everything of this hotel is wonderful!
Review 72:Meals in room. They awaken you 30min before serving to put the futon away and set the table. Meals were almost conveyor type Japanese n sushis were horridly unfresh. Felt like a backpackers onsen but no backpackers prices. But the serving ladies were fabulously friendly.
Review 73:Location
Review 74:The futon is a bit thin, so more than one night on them is not great.
Review 75:The Onsen was lovely and they went out of their way to make a vegetarian meal for us.
Review 76:This is not non-smoking hotel so smell of cigarette is everywhere in the hotel, especially in guest room A bit old hotel, onsen is normal not great. They have massage chair (with plastic sheet covered) but need to pay to use it
Review 77:Location is good, very near to train station
Review 78:The location was perfect, only a short walk away from the main Hakone station. You can leave your luggage and get right to your sight-seeing. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was clean, spacious and comfortable (bathroom was a tad tiny though). Seeing my name displayed right outside of my room and at the lobby was a nice touch, that made me feel like an honored guest. Loved the sound of the river right outside the room, very relaxing. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a convenient, comfortable stay at Hakone.
Review 79:Communication is so bad . They can't understand and the grasp of English is so limited
Review 80:Location, dinner and breakfast very typical Japanese . Had a great Japanese homestay and even better hot spring bath . All in the same building
Review 81:we mad a reservation for private onsen at 22:00. we got to lobby 5 min before that, but had to wait until 22:15. the onsen area is on 8th floor, it is not in very traditional style. there is no water fountain in private onsen, need to walk out to the public onsen to get water.
Review 82:1.walking distance from the station. 2.the staffs are all very nice and helpful.the lady doesnt speak English, but still try hard to explain everything to us. 3.breakfast and dinner are pretty good. It was a good experience for the first time visit Hakon.
Review 83:- The hotel is "modern ryokan" type with all its pros and cons - It was not rennovated for some time (photos are better than reality) - The staff is friendly, but the overall feeling is somehow impersonal - The food is moderate So if you want to experience the real ryokan - some other options may be found for the same price.
Review 84:- The location is good (2 mins from train station), allowing you to stay at Hakone-Yumoto and make a round trip in Hakone area within a day. - Good bath with 2 private baths possible for reservation (for separate fee around 2000 yen). It may be important for people that want to avoid public baths.
Review 85:Hotel had a very strong smell of cigarettes. Interior is very dated. Though the room, itself, didn't have a strong smell of tobacco, the hallways and lobby did. The private outside onsen (traditional Japanese bath) was pretty but faced the hotel opposite the river with little brush in between for privacy. Breakfast and dinner were plentiful, but quality of food was not very far above average.
Review 86:Great location. Staff is friendly and very willing to help. Dinner/breakfast was expansive and pretty good. Onsen was comfortable.
Review 87:Nothing
Review 88:Breakfast n dinner was served in the room. The lady is very patience to explain to us how to have proper Japanese meal with sign language. She can't speak english. We really appreciate her effort.
Review 89:Just a tiny opinion: as it is a hotel that offers half board accommodation, no choice for single occupancy of a room when booking on booking.com is an unfair thing to me, as a result of my still having to pay the same price as those in double occupancy.
Review 90:Quite near the city station, making it much easier to visit what tourists may be interested in. Dinners during the stay were tasteful, as well as in great varieties, from which I did feel how hard staff tried to make my visit a memorable one.
Review 91:not really a hotel to get you out of the real world, but definitely good value for money considering the sumptuous meals and quiet ambience. location is excellent and easiest in hakone area.
Review 92:1. We actually made green tea using the pot provided by the staff (After meal drink). Unfortunately, the staff did not notice it and brought us the same pot (with the stale green tea leaves) the next morning for us to make our morning brew. 2. The dinner wasn't as fancy or great tasting as other ryokan that we stayed at. Can be better. 3. Open air private onsen is great during summer when the wind isn't chilly. However during winter, you can catch a cold whilst waiting to enter the pool. 4. Breakfast can be earlier. 5. Toilet is a little cramped. Facilities are also a little old.
Review 93:1. Location was excellent. Short distance from Hakone Yumoto Station. Come out of the station, using the overhead crossing to pass over to the other side. Take a lift down (if you have heavy luggage) and walk straight along. At first shop with green sign, just turn left. 2. Room was fairly spacious and had a balcony which we went out for a while the next morning. (It faced the river which was excellent). 3. Staff were generally friendly. 4. I travelled with a young child and they had a soft foam structure with soft bricks in the lobby which was fun for my child. Spotted a wii game console in the lobby as well but didn't try.
Review 94:top quality facilities, really helpful staff, amazing services provided that made our stay really pleasant and unforgettable. Minutes walk away from Hakone Yumoto Station.
Review 95:The food was alright, mainly cold. Due to communication difficulties, you don't really know what you're eating. But served in your room, traditional Japanese cuisine. Very authentic :)
Review 96:For only 2000yen you can book a private open air onsen with beautiful view looking out to the river and forest for 50min! It was relaxing and amazing!!!
Review 97:Not much variety is onsen, its quite small with two indoor pools and one outdoor pool. In room food was average at best, could have been better considering the price we paid.
Review 98:Great location easily accessed from Hakone Yumoto station. Service by Megumi was great too. Very nice private onsen but a tad pricey (2,000 yen for 50 mins)
Review 99:The hotel only provided soap, no shampoo& shower cap in the room. The shop&restaurants in this area are closed very early, about 7 pm. The latest one we found was not tasty.
Review 100:The hotel locates in very good location for back packer. We can leave luggage on first day before enjoy day tour around Hakone. We also can shop the souvenir nearby hotel. The private Onsen in hotel was very nice with extra charge 2,000 yen/room plus service fee 150 yen/person.
Review 101:Wifi didn't really work in our room. It was a traditional room but could have been made to feel more 'cosy'.
Review 102:Friendly staff, good location, cosy and traditional.
Review 103:Staffs helpful Room clean. Private Onsen was clean and comfy. Hotel are very mindful of guests, they even provide reading glasses at the front desk.
Review 104:The hotel is very nice and the staffs were very friendly, polite and helpful. The location is very convenient as it is close to Hakone Yumoto Station. The tatami room is very comfortable and the breakfast is really very traditional even though we don’t enjoy having heavy rice in the morning. The breakfast is served in our room and the lady has patience to explain to us how to enjoy the breakfast to the fullest even although she doesn’t speak good English. You can have the public onsen any time you like. You can have private onsen at 2,000 Yen for 50 mins. Overall, I would highly recommend my fellow friends. There are many choices of restaurant nearby (before 5pm). There are many shops selling light snacks, you can try first before you make a purchase.
Review 105:The location is extremely good. Very close to the hakone yumoto station but must be sharp to spot the board of the hotel. Hotel is a little old but room is spacious and all amenities are good. Onsen is nice too! Water at just the right temperature. Food was nice and the best price for a japanese inn in he area.
Review 106:nothing.
Review 107:This is a very wonderful experience during this traveling,i love this country,i love this city,i love the people here. For the location, the food, all is the best.
Review 108:I am hugely disappointed by this hotel. It is an obvious tourist trap and can continue to take advantage of tourist given it's location in a famous Japanese hot springs resort and proximity to train station. I was mislead by the pictures and prior positive reviews, and given the fact that I have had excellent experiences with all hotels in Japan thus far which have cost significantly less than this hotel, I am exceedingly angered by this hotel. It charges over 300$US per night for mediocre food for Japanese standards, and old filthy room with paint peeling off the walls. The absolutely worst however was the fact that the room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. The window is too small to air out the smell. The air conditioner was an over 20 year old machine that only made loud clapping noises and dripped water onto the tatami floor. There is a sign on the air con that it should not be set less than 23 degrees because the air con will fail otherwise. When I approached hotel staff regarding these problems, they said they are sorry but can't do anything about it. It is just how it is, maybe we can change the room tomorrow morning. When asked if they had an electric fan so that I can air out the room and also to cool down since the air con doesn't do anything but make noise, they said they had none.Needless to say, I did not sleep at all and by next morning I just wanted to leave, asap. I felt forced to sleep in a room that was too hot, loud (from broken air con making loud noises), smelled like an ashtray so much so, that I could not consciously take a deep breath and I also got bit by mosquitos. This may be acceptable when you paid for a cheap motel, but not such an overpriced hotel by any standards.Upon leaving, the hotel maid told us that the couple who slept in our room previously were heaving smokers and filled 4-5 ashtrays full of cigarettes per day and did not open the one small room window at all.
Review 109:a little bit noising coz it near the river.
Review 110:perfect location, just 5mins walk from train station to the hotel, besides the river. private spring on the rop floor is a good experience!
Review 111:The WiFi was excellent, the Japanese breakfast wonderful. The hotel accommodated when we requested for non - meat non - alcohol content breakfast. Service was charming.
Review 112:We like every moment at this hotel. From the moment we checked in until we checked out the day after. Staffs were very friendly, polite and helpful. The location is very convenient because is very close to the train station. You don't need a taxi, just walk and probably takes only five minutes. The tatami room was fun while the private onsen was clean and very comfy. We like every moment in this hotel and we will sure be back to this hotel and recommend to our family and friends. ARIGATO!!
Review 113:The hotel is very close to the train station and the main bus stop that can take you to every where in Hakone. The staff at the front desk is very nice and friendly.
Review 114:Rather over valued in price.
Review 115:Wonderful hotel with a true taste of the old Japan. A really great experience for anybody visiting japan for the first time. Great location.
Review 116:Bedding (only because we're not used to sleeping on a mat on the floor) :)
Review 117:Great location for access in and out of Hakone. Newbies to Japanese style room, it was an experience both in food and bedding. Staff were friendly, the lady that served dinner and breakfast was lovely.
Review 118:I love the Food and the traditional design of room.
Review 119:the location is good, just beside the railway station.
Review 120:Manager and staff were very kind to us! Meals were good, location was perfect for a tight schedule.
Review 121:Close to public transport and amenities
Review 122:A great experience at a genuine Japanese ryokan
Review 123:The ventilation for hot springs indoor is pretty bad. We need fresh air.
Review 124:The setup of the breakfast.
Review 125:N/A
Review 126:Very good services, and taste breakfast
