Reviews for Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier
Review 1:Small rooms for 3 adults sharing. Would be okay for 2 adults. The bathroom wasn't cleaned well enough. A little noisy as people come and go.Helicopter noise during the day directly opposite hotel.
Review 2:Close to glacier walk. Close to local restaurants. Lots of outdoor activities available...quad biking is good.
Review 3:high cost. credit card payment will incur extra charge. parking was full at the time we were there.
Review 4:handy location. weather forecast on reception desk was great.
Review 5:Overpriced for the room we stayed in. Check-in time of 3pm is too late and they didn't bend on this time. Staff directed us to wrong location for tour.
Review 6:Good location
Review 7:Repeated phone calls to the hotel with a simple request that remained undealt with and no return phone call as promised. It didn't inspire confidence.
Review 8:The housekeeper put us in touch with a great babysitter, Fern, who was awesome and my kids were in no hurry to leave her.
Review 9:Low standard , stuffy and not very clean room . Very low quality bathroom with semi clogged rusted sink etc .Shower threw water all over the place . It got cleaned at 5.30 pm even when we were away all the time . Ordered room service dinner quite early as had arrived after a long drive of 6 hours . Food came cold and all shaken up but bill came very big !!!
Review 10:Location and nothing else could be liked about the property . Looks like they have two types of rooms . As GM thinks we stayed in their non starred room 510 as it was quite low in standards especially the bathroom !!
Review 11:We were given an 'upgrade' for free as we were travelling with other people ( which I think is spectacular) but if you look at the difference you're paying an extra $50 for an ironing board and a Mini Bar it's not worth it. They also don't have any utensils or a toaster which is quite normal to have and annoying when you don't... they offer to cook your toast if you sign a waiver... a bit far fetched it's just toast chill the heck out.
Review 12:Location Location Location (keeping in mind you can only see the top of the mountain not the actual glacier like the photos imply.
Review 13:The manager was very accompdating but the rest of the stuff weren't. Reception guys were completely unhelpful with booking any glacier / helicopter tours (which is the only reason people come to this place) and require some training. New hotel but not worth the $$ we have paid.
Review 14:The location is perfect, although most of the hotels are in the centre as the town is tiny. The bed was super comfy too and it's a new or freshly refurbished hotel.
Review 15:Room very over priced and too small as a room for 3. bathroom way too small for a room for 3 and walls very thin could hear people nextdoor easily. I stay in a lot of hotels for work across NZ and this was a motel not a hotel
Review 16:Close to ameneties
Review 17:We ate in the main restaurant and found the food to be tasteless, lacking depth, the menu looked good but we were disappointed in our food. Bread rolls were stale!
Review 18:Hotel Rooms - excellent
Review 19:Check out time is 10 AM. This is not very convenient. The restaurant is often completely booked to accommodate groups.
Review 20:Comfortable and clean. Wi-Fi is available and free.
Review 21:Checked us into rooms with 1 double and 1 single bed. Room is really small, shower was horrible, nothing like the picture shows. we found hair in the bed, also blood stain.. The second day, staff upgrade us to Te Wanunoi , the room was so much nicer stay than the previous night.
Review 22:Staffs are extremely friendly and nice!
Review 23:When we arrived they immediately upgraded us to their 5* Te Waonui resort. It was an amazing resort hotel in the rain forest. The manager and his staff were all brilliant.
Review 24:Could wash laundry but not dry it. No dryer
Review 25:Everything except one minor thing. Stunning view , Friendly staff and great food. Handy to everything and the best heater ever
Review 26:Breakfast ok, little pricey, wi fi only works in main dining area, not a real issue.
Review 27:Superior King room recently re furbished, had room to back very quite and clean. Much better than average, lovely dining sitting area, free wi fi. Lovely shower and bed, very comfortable, to soft plush. Great view from our room of snow peaked mountain.
Review 28:A little disappointing to get an email from Booking.com just the day before we arrived to offer the same room at a reduced price. It was too difficult for the staff to give us that price on the day. It didn't spoil our enjoyment though.
Review 29:Very handy to the township.
Review 30:The hotel is ideally located in Franz Josef but could do with more warmth and character. The rooms have an annoyingly large gab beneath the doors that is really unwelcome in the winter.
Review 31:Second time of staying there. It was nice to go back and the views in the morning when you open the curtains of the snow capped mountains is second to none.
Review 32:10 of us were late and misunderstood the pick up time by intercity bus but the front office staff managed to settle the bill while ordering a van to deliver our suitcases to the intercity bus main stop, all in record time of 10 minutes.
Review 33:On entering the restaurant we were asked to sit in their lobby area with some other couples whilst tables were cleared. Most of the tables had been used but none of them had been cleared of dishes etc. In the end we all waited 40 minutes not offered menus or a drink by the young lady in charge who was very offhand. When eventually had our meal, which was very nice, they forgot our wine and had to be reminded twice mainly because staff were not assigned to tables therefore lost track. Organisation of waiting by the lady in charge staff was zero .
Review 34:Modern yet elegant hotel with excellent room. Opening doors from our ground floor room on to a small terrace overlooking the gardens.
Review 35:It would be nice have water for tea that had not been drawn from the bathroom. Perhaps some large bottles of water could be placed near the tea-making area. The fire pit area could be enlarged and the seating configured so that several people can enjoy the fire.
Review 36:The room was very comfortable. Loved the big chairs and the giant footstool. The view of the glacier first thing in the morning was marvellous. The fire pit was very cosy and the perfect place for an after dinner liquer.
Review 37:This was the most expensive place we stayed in and it was terribly overpriced. The room looked like it had been recently referbished but the bathroom had cheap fittings and the shower was unreliable.
Review 38:Good location for visiting glacier
Review 39:The bed was super soft but felt that you were going to roll off. In our room we faced the backpacker pub and there was a lot of noise.
Review 40:It was in town, clean and friendly.
Review 41:I was looking forward to this part of our two week trip to NZ the most. This was one of the more expensive hotels we booked, so I was expecting better. I had called ahead before booking to ensure that we had one of the refurbished rooms.. Which it was. When I walked into our room, my heart sank.. It smelt terrible. The bathroom drains just stunk.. I had to keep the door open because I couldn't stand the smell. Despite being refurbished in 2012, the room seems tired and the furniture worn. There were no cooking amenities, plates or cutlery in the room, which meant we had to eat out the whole duration of our stay. I really did not feel I was getting value for my money, especially in comparison to other accommodation we had during our time in NZ. But to top it off.. When I went to clean the toilet, the toilet brush was covered in dried faeces. Absolutely revolting. I tried not to let the hotel ruin my experience of an absolutely beautiful part of the country, but nevertheless was extremely disappointed.
Review 42:Beautiful location, disappointing hotel.
Review 43:Would have expected safe in room, wallpaper peeling off the bedroom wall (although this is no reflection on cleanliness) food only average
Review 44:Brilliant location, clean, and fantastic views. Staff very friendly.
Review 45:The room was small and very average, the deck looked onto the parking lot after requesting a mountain view.
Review 46:The Glass House restaurant was nice and the food was excellent.
Review 47:It was quite considerably more expensive than other places we stayed at that were just as nice or better. Room was only just big enough for the queen and single bed.
Review 48:The accommodation was very nice and it was in a good location
Review 49:Nil
Review 50:The room was clean, well proportioned and comfortable. A laundry is available to use by visitors. This was useful, as we had been travelling for a while. We enjoyed our stay.
Review 51:Rooms were small ( we were upgraded to newer wing already ) . Bathroom was small. Very poor quality of finishes, beds, linen, . No air cons. Restaurant very average. Wifi was terrible and very slow! Would not stay there again. Dont know whats so scenic about it at all. Just a very cheap motel.
Review 52:Nothing really apart from location and free parking.
Review 53:We seem to have landed in one of the "older" buildings ofthis hotel. While it had been updated, the room was quite small. Also, the sink drained very slowly and the shower would spray the ceiling andhad to be hand held the whole time. Both issues (room 50) were reportedon checkout.
Review 54:Given how small the Franz Josef "resort" area is, there reallyisn't a "bad" spot. The Scenic is central to everything.Since few nz hotels offer 2 beds per room, it was nice to find a roomthat easily slept 3 people with a queen and a single bed all in oneroom. We visited just a few days before Christmas as reservations weregetting hard to come by. Price was reasonable given last minutereservation just a few days ahead of time.
Review 55:we were switched to Te Waonui as the Scenic hotel was overbooked. we were assured that this was an upgrade but we were put in the farthest corner rooms. outside walkways from the room to the main block. the room had 2 queen beds which took up all the room it would have been better to have had 1 king bed and more sitting area, no outlook whatsoever. Our evening meal was a particular disappointed!!, our friends dinner of rack of lamb came cold with just 2 skinny ribs, my wife asked especially for her steak to be well on the rare side of medium but it came so well done, it looked like a piece of over boiled beef!! they did get it right in the end but I had already finished my meal. breakfast was better but staff still needed prompting. would not recommend this hotel meaning Te Waonui.
Review 56:Tour Buses parked at rear of hotel next to a number of rooms were very loud in the morning and so no chance of sleeping through. Town should investigate a tour bus park away from accomodation or hotel should install better sound proofing
Review 57:Warm, clean, modern rooms
Review 58:No cheddar cheese in the restaurant
Review 59:The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly, from the front desk to the cleaning staff! No other hotel had a recycling bin in the bedroom, which we fully appreciated. And the glacier was right out our window! The food in the restaurant was very good!
Review 60:When we arrived around 6pm the reception staff at night was very negative and did not help us out much when asking questions about the glaciers etc. He seemed as if he didn't want to help.
Review 61:Great room and the view was stunning!
Review 62:Wouldn't have liked if they have replaced the toiletries once opened and in use.
Review 63:Rooms were comfortable and warm, bed was great, very cosy and warm.
Review 64:Bad staff
Review 65:Amazing view
Review 66:Insufficient lighting for rooms, rather expensive for what we got
Review 67:Comfy bed
Review 68:Good location, right in the centre of town.
Review 69:A bit noisy outside at night
Review 70:Clean, good location
Review 71:Too many coach parties
Review 72:Good location and staff excellent
Review 73:Very clean and nice toiletries in the bathroom
Review 74:Faily pricey
Review 75:Near glaciers and restaurants
Review 76:The friendly & helpful manager in charge and staff gave an excellent service.
Review 77:Staff attitude can be better, especially compared with other hotels in the area. The hotel is just okay.
Review 78:A great location with great scenery
Review 79:Food was way over priced. Christmas Day dinner was not worth $85 per head, too expensive
Review 80:Rooms are clean and the bed was very comfortable.
Review 81:room locatiion
Review 82:A motel with high end hotel rates! Never paid so much for so little!!
Review 83:Greeted at reception by staff in Maori costume.
Review 84:Rooms were built around an area of tropical forest so that you felt you were sleeping in the forest.
Review 85:Overall quality price ratio poor compared to any other place. Also village is only made for helicopter flights to glacier in summer time - grazy!!
Review 86:Location and room
Review 87:Great hote
Review 88:Great staff
Review 89:Great location. Very comfortable bed
Review 90:Comfortable lounge area to relax in. restaurant expensive but the food was good.

Review 93:No wifi in rooms, only available in Lobby
Review 94:Comfy bed, location
Review 95:Everything
Review 96:The location was close to everything. It had an awesome view. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The beds were super comfortable too.
Review 97:The meal in the dining room was adequate but there was no specials ie product that was unusual or in-season and local to the area.

Review 112:Staff was very friendly & helpful; nice & clean rooms.
Review 113:Bad wifi,Reception(women) was unfriendly
Review 114:They upgraded us to the 5 stars Te Waonui hotel, it was fab!
Review 115:A bath would have just been a cherry on the cake but amazing none the less.
Review 116:The view facing the mountain and glacier is worth the little extra.
Review 117:Nothing.
Review 118:Right in the center of a very small town. The receptionist, Heidi, was terrific. The restauarant was excellent.
Review 119:Nothing
Review 120:The welcome, the room setting and functionality
Review 121:nothing
