Reviews for Fujiya Hotel

Review 1:Bed a little hard. Nothing to see or do in Myinoshita other than the hotel. Food very pricey. Don't come if you want slick, modern amenities.

Review 2:Staff were excellent and made us feel very welcome and looked after. The hotel oozes history and old world charm. The gardens are beautiful. The whole place reminds me of the Grand Budapest Hotel (movie). Very thoughtful provision of hairbrushes, razor, hairtie in bathroom.

Review 3:We traveled here just after New Year, traffic was heavy so getting to from hotel took time. The road is one lane each way, the train is frequent but slow, buses available but again give oneself enough time to get from one place to another in case of traffic.

Review 4:The hotel has an old world charm, although furnishings dated; staff, food, ambience excellent.

Review 5:Nothing

Review 6:The place is steeped in history. It has been extended and extended over the years. It is one of the most beautiful hotels you will ever stay in. The management and staff are all wonderful. I have to give a special mention to Mizugishi Naoya and Youko Kotaki who where extremely nice to me during my stay.

Review 7:We visited in December. The hotel room was over-heated, but there was no way to turn down the heat. We did not sleep very well because of this.

Review 8:Great location, just 5 minutes walk away from the Miyanoshita station and minutes away from a number of local restaurants and bus stops.

Review 9:Swimming pool and surrounding needs updating as it is beginning to show its age.

Review 10:A lovely hotel with lots of character, like an old colonial hotel. Beautiful garden, wonderful room. Food was very good and the service was good. Staff very friendly and very helpful. Good varied breakfast. This is a lovely hotel, slightly worn around the edges, which comes with age. But to modernise the hotel we felt it would lose all its character and charm. We loved this hotel...nice stand alone unique place, a change from the standard corporate hotels.

Review 11:We loved the nostalgia of the Hotel. Staff were amazing and went out of their way for everything. My daughter lost her mobile phone and they found it and delivered to her while we were having cocktails after dinner. We even got to sit, drink tea and eat apple pie at the same table that John Lennon did many years before. Great location half way up the mountain in a cute town. The food at the French restaurant was wonderful and the cocktails in the cellar bar were delicious. We felt we had truly stepped back in time. My husband and 2 adult daughters had a fabulous time!!!

Review 12:Our room was the end of the building and neighbor tooms were all under refurbishment. So spooky. Some staff were not well mannered. Shame I found few of them very attentive and friendly.

Review 13:Room displaying the hotel's history.

Review 14:Friendly and helpful staff. Huge comfortable room. The whole place oozes old world charm. Beautiful buildings and grounds. Great base location to explore Hakone and Lake Ashi.

Review 15:Has a Wes Anderson's 'Grand Budapest Hotel' feel... Was probably magnificent in it's prime. Needs a nick of paint in places but a really charming/ magical hotel.

Review 16:Room 43 was shabby. Nothing of charm at all.

Review 17:The chef went out of his way to provide an excellent vegetarian meal. It was terrific. There was a woodland trail behind the hotel which led directly to the outdoor museum, not sure why the hotel didn't want to share this information when asked if we could walk there but instead said it was too dangerous along the road

Review 18:The charm of an old hotel meant that there was peeling paint in the bathroom and the condition of the buildings was not great. But, staying there should help fund some future repairs. I expected it to look just as it did and appreciated it.

Review 19:The history of the Hotel is fascinating. Knowing that one is staying in a hotel that has been in operation for so long is an honor. The staff had excellent service all around. Walking location to the train was a plus. On site museum had interesting memorabilia.

Review 20:Property was rather tired....our non smoking room smelled of smoke. The grounds are in need of work and the outdoor pool is filled with green slimey water.

Review 21:In its day this property must have been amazing but it is not in its "day" any longer. The booking.com folks get the less attractive rooms.

Review 22:I didn't like the really dated nature of the room, even though I understand the cost to upgrade such a property would be astronomical.

Review 23:I loved the faded grandeur of the hotel. I loved its history, and felt that it still lives up to its reputation as a landmark property in Japan.

Review 24:The historic buildings could use some TLC due to age, and the beds were very firm.

Review 25:Majestic hotel with amazing buildings, beautiful gardens and super helpful and attentive staff. Rooms were huge and well equipped, and food at the restaurants was great.

Review 26:Our room was a double room that had obviously been divided into 2 with bathrooms added within the space. The bed was pushed right up against the wall so I had to crawl into bed. It should really be a single room, not a double. For this reason I did not give a high score for "Value for money"

Review 27:The service and friendliness of the staff was amazing!!! Just loved them.........The garden lovely, so nice to walk in a garden at a hotel..

Review 28:Some parts of the hotel look like there hasn't been maintenance for a while, for example the onsen, which was rather small for a hotel of this size.

Review 29:The building is great, and has a nice historical atmosphere. It is close to the station, and has two convenience stores nearby. The garden is beautiful, with some nice ponds and greenhouses; you could easily walk there for an hour. The hotel is situated in an area with several great hiking courses.

Review 30:Hotel is very old, very! I'm very sensitive to smell, the old wood smell makes me very uncomfortable. Bathroom is very old and not well maintained. The only restaurant near was closed, so we had to eat in hotel restaurant (grill wisteria), ridiculously expensive. I hate that I didn't have phone or camera at hand, we had one soup, 1430 JPY, 2 fish, which is one piece about 1 inch wide with little vegetables, 3430 JPY each, rice is 480 JPY extra, beer 810 JPY. With 10,000 JPY we ate nothing and starved that night.

Review 31:Room is enormous by Japanese standard. Bed comfortable. Garden is beautiful.

Review 32:Too expensive for what you get; bathroom needs a renovation very urgent; public path is not good enough for this high-standard hotel.

Review 33:Good view from our room; swimming pool; garden is beautiful

Review 34:Despite its faboulous architecture and its breath-taking garden, this hotel is not worth its price: there were too many shortcomings. The walls in the public bath were covered with mould, the plaster was dropping off from the ceiling, the outdoor swimmingpool was dirty, the cabin for undressing lacked even a crook where to hang the clothes on, and there were spiderwebs and mud on the wall. Unlike in all other Japanese hotels we know, the staff was not always friendly: we got no admission to the cafeteria at eight o’clock although another couple was served till nine, twice we got incorrect information, and the lady at the outdoor pool behaved rather snobbishly. All in all not a place to be recommended!

Review 35:very spacious rooms

Review 36:The facilities were very old and looked disgusting, im talking about iner pool and onsen. The bath and room felf not clean.

Review 37:The staff was very nice, They understand that the hill that reaches the hotel is hard to climb, and they were very helpful with our luggage.

Review 38:It is really old and inappropriate for young couples. One day stay is not enough to feel hotel and Hakone area due to long transfer times.

Review 39:Nice historical old hotel to stay.

Review 40:What I didn't like was the fact that although we booked a room for three people when we arrived we were required to pay for an extra bed even though we did not need it. There were two beds--one for my husband and I and one for our daughter but they made us pay for an extra bed for our stay each night. We were very disappointed about this and felt that it impacted our opinion about this hotel. Also, the staff wasn't very helpful about things to do in the area which was unfortunate but we figured it out by ourselves.

Review 41:Excellent location, historical, beautiful decor, lovely tea room and an amazing garden.

Review 42:Minor issues for us: Dinner time ends too early, at 8:30. The onsen could use a little more light.

Review 43:Sure there are signs of age here and there, but the buldings are amazing, our rooms on the Forest Lodge very spacious and comfortable. The place oozes charm and history.

Review 44:Shocking breakfast ..probably the most expensive but the worst we had in Japan. Very limited buffet. Quite disappointing. Also after paying $350 a night ..wanted to charge a extra $30 to extend checkout by 1 hour.

Review 45:Loved the eccentricity of the hotel. Loved our 60's room. Loved the shuttle service to the train

Review 46:The bed was so hard we couldn't sleep, the bathroom was grotty, there was far too much furniture in the room and it looked like a used furniture shop. With a little attention it could be so much better, we paid a premium price and where very disappointed with these aspects.

Review 47:I loved the old parts of the building & the amazing gardens, the grand dinning room and awesome staff, we also had a wonderful view from our room. We also liked having onsen water direct to our bathtub.

Review 48:Oozing with character, the Fujiya Hotel is magnificent in East meets West architecture. Good friendly staff who were very helpful. Huge bedrooms and hot spring water piped to the bath for private bathing. Good choice of restaurants and swimming pool, hot spring and even fascinating hotel musuem.

Review 49:Well, what can you do in Hakone? For active people, there is'nt really a lot to do, I think. Great nature but no hiking. The boat trip is very touristy. The Hakone Open Air Museum however is very good.

Review 50:Lots of famous people stayed here: Albert Einstein, Queen Silvia of Sweden, John Lennon, Wolfgang Lynen - so this place has lots of character and atmosphere.

Review 51:- Here and there the building was getting a bit too old in need of some modernisation - They don't seem to be interested in onsen so much. Their public baths were old and uninviting.

Review 52:- An amazing building and it's like a time travel to walk inside the hotel! - Beautiful garden. - The guest bedroom was very spacious.

Review 53:Although his hotel was pricey you felt like you were staying somewhere very special - like stepping back in time - we especially like the traditional Japanese restaurant in the old summer house - Amazing not cheap but worth it.

Review 54:Very expensive for what you get. No views of Mt Fuji from hotel.

Review 55:Our private breakfast and dinner were neat, very formal with multiple courses. Family hot springs bath was a nice experience. Not too far from train station stop. Held our bags for us while we did round course after we checked out.

Review 56:The hotel is that perfect old-world rustic style with great style and location. We walked to the picasso open air museum, and on to see Fuji on the way to Ashinoko lake. Make sure you have the non-buffet breakfast in the large dining hall!

Review 57:the buildings and gardens are beautiful the staff is very nice and helpful nice small city in the middle of nature recommended one day get away from Tokyo

Review 58:This hotel had the most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept on. We actually considered sleeping on the floor. I certainly expect better for the rates they charge.

Review 59:Beautiful grounds and a great tea room overlooking fish ponds.

Review 60:wifi is not stable at room; bed is ok but the quilt is so heavy and way below the standard it should be for the this sort of hotel; public hot spring bath for men is tiny that could hardly take three or four users at same time

Review 61:good service, such as shuttle bus from/to station; historical building with a charm of old luxury; very big room; beautiful garden and orchid lounge. This hotel tells a legend how an old eastern nation determined to transfer themselves to a western nation.

Review 62:This hotel is not located in Hakone, but in Myanoshita. We didn't end up spending any time in Hakone because we were too far away. However, this hotel and small town were awesome and would highly recommend to someone who wants a relaxing night off the beaten path.

Review 63:Amazing old traditional Japanese hotel, with beautiful grounds, amazing staff and a luxurious feel! Loved this place.

Review 64:The roof of the swimming pool should Be refreshed and the price of the restaurants is top expensive

Review 65:the hotel is beautiful and has a wonderfull garden.the rom was really nice in Japanese style but big enough for 3 persons

Review 66:The Fujiya Hotel was right up my alley. A hotel with history and old world charm (which shows in a bit of wear and tear), I loved meandering around the gardens and different buildings. It's located in a quiet part of Hakone but that was perfect for us and the view from our room was of a mountain-just stunning.

Review 67:Nothing. It was a great stay.

Review 68:The hotel is a delight and a step back in time but with modern facilities. Massive room compared to other hotels in Tokyo. First class service - nothing was too much trouble. Excellent food and beautiful grounds.

Review 69:The "onsen" in this hotel is a tiny bath, nothing fancy at all. The location is far from the train station.

Review 70:I loved the historic feel this property has. The rooms are all large with vaulted ceilings. Service is OUTSTANDING.

Review 71:Wifi not working well Hotelbis too old so no sound proof, the whole night we have to listen to the TV which the room next to us is watching. Also we hear very clear when the people talking next door

Review 72:Given the rich history of the hotel, more should be done to explain the history. A guided tour will be good. The lobby despite the history of the hotel needs a facelift esp the sofas and the carpet.

Review 73:The room is big and very comfortable

Review 74:Most of the many shops and restaurants within walking distance of hotel closed or very limited hours in what appears to be off season Public bath very small and needs upgrade

Review 75:Staff was excellent Beautiful dining room Very interesting museum on lower level

Review 76:We stayed in the Forest Lodge section of the hotel built in 1960. It is in need of an update. The beds were fine but the vanity stool seemed to be over 50 years old and wobbled and creaked when sat on. The bathroom tiling and wood trim also looked old. The pool is nice but could also use a nicer ladder out of the hot tub and the skylights needed mold cleaned off of them.

Review 77:This hotel has quite an impressive history and the woodwork in this sprawling establishment is quite impressive, also impressive are the lovely gardens. The staff are exceptionally attentive. Our room in the Forest Lodge was quite spacious and had a view of the hillside and forest and the windows had sliding rice paper style window coverings.

Review 78:A beautiful western hotel, but part of its charm is its slightly faded glory. However, the service was wonderful, the interior was stunning, and it was a great position to explore Hakone and the area.

Review 79:Guest rooms are great but but "historic" with original fixtures and plumbing.

Review 80:Classic hotel that has been around since the late 1800's. Beautiful public areas and restaurants

Review 81:Rooms smell of cigarette smoke. Beds with electric support adjustments reminded me of an old peoples home.

Review 82:Grand old front of house spaces slightly reminiscent of the hotel from the Shining. A faded opulence that in its heyday would have been incredible to behold and still gives a sense of it today.

Review 83:Many stairs to climb to get to reception (no elevators), so not ideal for elderly folks. We asked for non-smoking rooms and were given rooms 41 & 43 in the main building. These two rooms were at the end of a long corridor somewhat separate from other (maybe better?) rooms in the main building. In any case, they were old looking rooms with old and cheap looking furniture, paint peeling near window frame, bed cover with stain etc. It was nothing less than shocking after what we paid for this hotel and everything we read online. And we are not the types who need 5* facilities or comfort but this was about 2* for us. A big let down. Also, buffet breakfast in the western style restaurant was OK, not worth the $30 per head we paid for it.

Review 84:The exterior of the building, common areas (lobby, tea room, gift shop) and garden were all nice. Staff was friendly and service good.

Review 85:The small town where Fujiya is located is very limited in terms of eating options and not much is open after dark. The in-hotel dining is formal and expensive although of a good standard.

Review 86:Fujiya is a beautiful, roomy historic hotel located in the centre of the Hakone region. The hotel is easily reached from the nearby station and bus services Train and bus enable easy movement to the area landmarks using the 3 day area pass. Fantastic Open Air Museum; wonderful view of Mt Fuji; hot springs; great panoramas

Review 87:Somewhat expensive for quality of room and facilities, hard bed in my opinion, onsen and pool jacuzzi with luke warm water, very very slow shuttle service (almost missed train)

Review 88:Staff couldn't be any nicer, beautiful historic facility, dated but classic interior so no problem, breakfast at hotel's Japanese restaurant was delightful

Review 89:Nothing!

Review 90:Loved just about everything about this place. The grounds are lovely, the hotel staff is excellent - very well trained and customer focused. The main building is a beautiful historic structure and even though the newer addition doesn't have the same character, the rooms are very large, comfortable and well equipped. It's more of an experience than just a hotel stay.

Review 91:There is a run down feeling that is evident with aging furniture, and a desperate need for a paint job, and mouldy ceilings in the public bath. If you don't want to pay the steep prices for meals in the hotel there are not a lot of other options in this sleepy little village.

Review 92:The history of this place draws you back in time. The unique buildings and beautiful garden. The staff were attentive and welcoming, and we enjoyed exploring. The bus system to get around is great, and five minutes walk to the train.

Review 93:The room was a bit dingy. However, I did stay in the old wing so the old fashioned layout and wear on the room would be expected.

Review 94:The garden surrounding the hotel is an attraction in its own right The hotel exuded the elegance of an era past. It was like walking through a time portal into the early 20th century. Polite helpful staff The luggage delivery service which is based at the Hakone-Yamoto station. It was wonderful to be check in at the end of the day and have our luggage waiting for us in the room already. You can organise for your luggage to be picked up and sent back to the station via the hotel cloakroom. I was pleasantly surprised to know that wifi was now available in all the rooms (not just LAN) Hot springs water can be piped into the private bath.

Review 95:Old hotel that is poorly kept up, living off its reputation from 100 years ago. Onsen very small for a place that started as a hot springs resort. Restaurant fancy, stuffy, and expensive. Gardens sorry. A misguided detour.

Review 96:Interesting location in the mountains, but the town doesn't have much going on in the fall. Rooms are big.

Review 97:Restaurants were disappointing - French dinner was very average and extremely expensive Breakfast was chaotic and required us to wait half an hour Surprisingly low level of English from waiting staff

Review 98:Atmospheric historic hotel Complimentary upgrade given

Review 99:The French restaurant of the hotel is way too expensive for the service and food quality offered.

Review 100:We had 2 great wooden rooms in the flower palace and stayed 2 nights with our 3 children. Things are a bit outdated in this hotel, but that is exactly the charm to expect of a place more than 100 years old. We really enjoyed it! The onsen is not very big, but fits somehow to the rest. Our children enjoyed the beautiful garden. The bus to all the other places of hakone is close. If you don't want to spend too much for the expensive restaurants of the hotel, there is a good new corean restaurant just down the road.

Review 101:Location was a little hard to get to. Not much to do in town. Hotel restaurants ridiculously expensive with very few options in town, esp once getting a bit late. Everything closes by 8pm.

Review 102:Hotel was nice, historic and comfortable. Excellent staff.

Review 103:The bedrooms are old which though part of the charm could do with a refurbishment

Review 104:The hotel is steeped in character and makes the stay a pleasure. Staff were very good always looking to help and with a smile

Review 105:We did not like that our room smelled like smoke even though we asked for a non-smoking room. Very disappointing and yucky. With two small kids, this made for a bit of a stressful night watching them sleep in beds that reeked of smoke.

Review 106:We loved the old time feeling of the Fujiya. The floors creak when you walk, and you really do get the feeling that you are stepping back into a very glamorous era. The staff is fabulous and helpful. We arrived after a very long day and with one quick phone call, they dashed up to the train station to pick us up.

Review 107:The hotel was built in the era when travelers did not use so manyappliances as today. To find a spot where one can charge cellphone onehas to look behind tables or beds. The onsen was extremelydisappointing. Just a pool in an ordinary room. Tv has only twoEnglish speaking channels, one of them (cnn) has japanese dubbing ontop of English

Review 108:The most beautiful hotel room I have ever seen. Japanese design at itsbest, large rooms with an exquisite view. The garden is a gem The staffis ready to help: I forgot my cell phone in the hotel and it wasimmediately sent to the address I gave.

Review 109:Meals expensive. No lift, so lots of stairs to climb. Got bitten by mosquito in my room.

Review 110:Beautiful old building, very elegant in the past but a bit tired now. Very polite staff. Free taxi to station.

Review 111:loved the collection of buildings, so beautiful and so very stylish. spa water running in bedrooms, lovely old fashioned staircases and lovely sitting room space with stunning views over the mountains.close to station and access to so many things to do, local buses stop outside hotel.

Review 112:It is in serious need of a renovation that would maintain it's charm. The bathrooms need updating with better fixtures. The wall paper and bedding too. It's ok to charge $300 plus a night and even over charge for food but it has to be worth it. Raffles Hotel in Singapore and The Peninsula Hotels are good examples of excellent taste in furnishings and fixtures and still maintaining allegiance to their history and charm. Staying here once is a good experience but be prepared for shabbiness and a little sadness. The private mermaid bath was only one of the many examples of neglect and disarray.

Review 113:This hotel has a lot of history behind it and offers great service. The gardens are beautiful and it looks grand on the outside.

Review 114:$200 per night for a dumpy room with old furniture is horrendous. Thisplace is barely worth $100 per night.Mattresses hard as a rock. Pillows were awful. Rooms so spread out in different buildings. Expensive dining options - more expensive than TOKOY?!?! Crazy. Rooms do not have balconies and you cannot open windows as Japanese hornets are a BIG problem here. Bathrooms are old. Furnishings old. Hotel reeks of damp and is just old old old. Nothing but a wrecking ball could save this place.

Review 115:Hotel's position is really the only thing it has going for it. Also,a nice garden atop the hill and nearby shrine made it seem peaceful. It's also very very quiet.Access to bus stop and Hakone Tozan Railway train was good. Just a quick 10 minute walk from hotel door. LAWSON convenience store provided yummy breakfast and even dinner options since hotel is grossly overpriced in those categories.

Review 116:Grand old hotel, excellent service, relaxing ambience. Our room was surprisingly spacious. Nice gardens leading to longer hikes up and down the steep mountainsides.

Review 117:Established in the 19th century, renovated in the 50ies or 60ies of the 20th century, it is not at all up to date. Needs some million dollars of investment. Lots of history but not state of the art. Lots of strange smells of chemicals and age. Not a house for young folks. Not really used to foreigners. Breakfast price like a 5 star international hotel and cafés around open only by 10am, what a coincidence! :-)

Review 118:Location, large room

Review 119:the room was too old and in desperate need of refurbishment, no proper airco (loud, no airco in most communal areas), bed was not comfortable. bathroom very old and hot (no airco)

Review 120:the historic building, location, garden is very pretty

Review 121:Grill restaurant very poor choice, small swimming pool inside and external pool close in 24th july. Too expensive. Rooms are not nice at all

Review 122:The outside garden is very nice , and the oldest part of the hotel was very nice.nice japanese bk

Review 123:Meals in the main dining room are pricey - recommend the grill room if watching your pocket book.

Review 124:If you love hotels that stand the test of time then you'll love the Fujiya. This hotel caters to anyone who enjoys afternoon tea, reading a good book in the comfy leather arm chairs, a quiet conversation in the lovely well-lit sunroom, strolling the gardens, and a classic bar/lounge at the end of the day. This kind of old-world charm is very hard to find. Parents with kids will love the large indoor swimming pool (reminiscent of a roman bath) all year long. There is very easy access to the train or buses traversing the Hakone area which run very regularly every 20 minutes or so. The staff is exceptional.

Review 125:Seems like it's getting little run down - probably not bringing as much money as it used to. Still beautiful though.

Review 126:Essential old-fashioned Japanese hotel. The garden was amazing and in-room massage before sleep one of the best we've ever gotten.

Review 127:Private onsen is just like a big bath tube.

Review 128:Hotel is old .

Review 129:Staffs are very friendly

Review 130:Location

Review 131:Nice environment

Review 132:One female staff recommended us to go to Odawara as there are more restaurants there. It was a very good recommendation

Review 133:The bed is so soft.

Review 134:Staff is so nice and the scence is very beautiful.

Review 135:Small room and location was not good

Review 136:Beautiful room
