Reviews for Hoeiso
Review 1:The only thing I would say is that the hallways were a little rundown. However, I thought it added to the atmosphere of the place.
Review 2:I thought the hotel was extremely charming, a ryokan with roomy quarters, wonderful food, impeccable service, and information in English. What set it out from other places was the wonderful setting. I will never forget sitting in the outdoor onsen on a crisp winter morning taking in the surrounding valley. Beautiful.
Review 3:The hotel is located very high up in the mountain which gives it a stunning view from the balcony of our room. The room is spacious and we really enjoyed our time here.
Review 4:All the rules! I felt captive. Dinner and breakfast are precise and served in your room. You're not given much time to eat. Dinner my first night was pheasant sushi. When I read this,I thought it was a mistranslation, but nope, it was raw poultry. They didn't offer a western breakfast. The building was tired - not much has been been done to it since the 70s, but it is clean. Oh, and the photos are a bit misleading, if you look to the right of the scenic historic building nestled in the mountain gorge, there's an abandoned parking lot being taken over with weeds. Buzz kill.
Review 5:The outdoor springs are lovely. The location is great - a dollar taxi ride from the train station - AND a short walk to Tenzan Tohi-kyo, which is a wonderful day use spring facility, and the highlight of my time in Hakone.
Review 6:Beautiful place with wonderful natural outdoor hot spring spots which are also available for couple-use provided pre-reservation. Staff's English was limited but was trying very hard to help. The room was Hugh esp. Considering Japanese standard. The food was nice too with beautiful traditional presentation .
Review 7:It's a bit out of the way, so there's nothing to see or do but chill at the ryokan at night. That being said, it's easy to ask the staff to call for a taxi, and there's a bus that goes pretty much to the front door.
Review 8:Wonderful, friendly, helpful and kind staff. The place is very beautiful though a smidge old. The food was great and the rooms were huge and very comfortable! The privately reserved outdoor hotspring is really great too!
Review 9:The place is very dated. For more than $350/night, I would think I could have gotten a more updated hotel stay. We unfortunately did not love the food. A lot of it was extremely foreign to us and we did not know what we were eating. For the adventurous eater, this is great but for anyone that is a little wary, maybe not the best option.
Review 10:If youre looking for an authentic ryokan, I dont think you can beat Hoeiso! I appreciated that you can book the hot spring outdoor bath privately.
Review 11:The only thing concerns is the bus schedule. Overall it is not bad to access. Also, get all the supplies you want because no shops around.
Review 12:The staff is very nice, food is good. Room is clean and tidy. Very impressive
Review 13:The hotel facilities outside the rooms, requires some renovation
Review 14:This hotel gives you a great experience to know what a ryokan is and the Onsen on the same place. what we really enjoyed was the politeness of the staff, service and food. We try the dinner which We really recommend!
Review 15:Room temperature was hard to control, and property did need a few repairs.I would prefer if outdoor spring was always open instead of reservable.
Review 16:Meals were delicious. Room was gigantic and comfy. Indoor and outdoor hot springs were great, especially outdoor.
Review 17:forniture is quite old
Review 18:onsen is amazing, there is one inside hotel, and another outside beside a little creek and in front of a forest. dinner and breakfast are good. staff is very kindly
Review 19:Carpet and some furniture are worn out.
Review 20:Excellent stay! The hot springs are wonderful. The dinner and breakfast alone could be worth the stay given the quality and variety of food offered.
Review 21:Lack some details to make it really perfect. The room was very nice. The corridors have to be repainted, the floor (of the corridors) have to be changed, some parts are a little bit messy (the garden for a excellent). To us looks like a japanese style hotel. A very nice experience... but not perfect.
Review 22:Staff is pro Food (dinner and breakfast) were excellent. The inside bath is a pleasure Room is classic japanese style and realy nice
Review 23:The place is decayed and perhaps needs total renovation- there is a smell of mould and deep fried food in the rooms and hallways. The bathroom smelled of stale urine. The carpets are threadbare in places and the walls need painting. The meal was arranged for 7pm, yet started at 6.40, and we were rushed, with inadequate explanation as to where to start etc. The staff tried really hard and there was nothing to complain of in their demeanour, I got the impression they were rushed as well. It was not value for money, but would have been in its heyday.
Review 24:The outdoors insam and running river past it.
Review 25:Very very friendly staff, excellent hot spring , nice scenery and the private hot spring time can be booked in advance, delicious Japanese style dinner and breakfast, very comfortable experience. The location is a little far from bus station, we cost about 1000 yen from bus station to hotel by taxi, there are also bus to hotel, it is very convenient.
Review 26:The building itself is a little rundown (was expecting it to be a bit more luxurious for the price)- could use an update, but it was still a brilliant experience. The service, food, onsens and experience were worth the price.
Review 27:Brilliant service from the staff. The dinner was great, as was the breakfast. The onsens were fantastic, especially being able to book the outdoor onsen at night for a private bath. The setting was beautiful and not far from hakone-yumoto station - 10 mins by bus, which drops you right outside the door.
Review 28:Over enthusiastic staff - limited privacy The mattress wasn't comfortable ( we do like tatami ! ) Limited view
Review 29:Superb breakfast and dinner Pleasurable onsen
Review 30:• The outdoor Ofuro is amazing! I take it at about 7:00 am, there is no anyone else. I can see mountain, river and blue sky. It is really a unexpected experience! • The dinner and the breakfast are all wonderful. It is the Japanese classic style. There is a special bird meat which is called "Ki Ji", it is really delicious! • The owner and the stuff are also nice! It is really happy to talk with them.
Review 31:The dinner was not something everyone can enjoy.
Review 32:The experience of staying in an authentic Ryokan with very caring staff and a private bathroom. All in the midst of nature with a mountain stream next to it. The outdoor onsen was idyllic.
Review 33:That they simply didnt had dinner for us the first night that we arrived. Should we have stayed only one night then we wouldnt be able to enjoy their dinner which is an essential part of the onsen experience if you ask me. The breakfast and dinner was ok but we have seen some better ones by other onsens.
Review 34:The authentic japanese decor of our rooms, the view of our windows and the little river flowing next to our outdoor open baths
Review 35:The ryokan is rather shabby and definitely overpriced. Sometimes our bathroom had a strange odour like cabbages. We would not recommend it to others.
Review 36:Outdoor onsen was lovely with views down the river. The staff were polite and friendly.
Review 37:The ensuite was slightly dusty and the decor of the whole building could do with some improving touches
Review 38:The staff was very friendly, the location was fantastic and in a very strategic point to visit the area.
Review 39:Quite expensive but it's because the price included a full-course breakfast & kaiseki dinner plus unlimited use of the onsens. Everything else was near-perfect!
Review 40:Beautiful traditional ryokan. Stays true to tradition and has lots of character. Scenic views from rooms. Very tranquil & relaxing. Great service and excellent food. Has 2 onsens - huge indoor "grand bath" and scenic riverside onsen. What's special is that room guests are allowed to reserve 30 minutes of private bath with your spouse/family every evening.
Review 41:There was minor confusion around inclusions. Best to clarify when booking. It was resolved quickly and happily.
Review 42:The traditional atmosphere and food were great. Our room hostess was very helpful. The outdoor bath was fabulous. The front office staff were great too. Easy to get to and get around.
Review 43:The ryokan is alittle run down and tired looking. But it was clean and comfy. More lighting in the garden leading towards the outdoor onsen would be great, otherwise I wouldn't like to walk there by myself esp if its your first time there. Quite dark.
Review 44:The dinner and especially breakfast was delish. Love how there is a variety of dishes to taste. The ryokan is located right where the bus stops, hence very convenient. The staff were very friendly and helpful too. We couldn't make it back for our arranged dinner time; but they waited outside the ryokan looking for our return. And when we did they served us dinner straight away. Flexibility is great, as things can run from schedule.
Review 45:There was nothing I didn't like, but remember to read the manual in the room for proper bathing etiquette. Also, the staff doesn't really speak English, but there is fast internet in the lobby area, so between your conversation and Mr Google, you will probably find your answer.
Review 46:Hoeiso is easy to get to by bus (stops right outside the ryokan). The rooms are huge, overlooking the lush green hillside. Bath facilities were clean and well-appointed. The food (dinner and breakfast) is fantastic and you will be very satisfied.
Review 47:The place wasn't as clean as I expected. There was no information in the room binder about free wifi, I found out after checking out in the lobby.
Review 48:The staff was VERY friendly and Lisa, our host, was extremely attentive and made our experience the best. Other staff was just as friendly and accommodated us well.
Review 49:not a bad experience - it was worth trying but we came to the conclusion we really didn't like traditional Japanese breakfast but it was beautifully prepared and served!
Review 50:Proprietor warned us in advance of closure of part of Hokane round trip (volcanoe got more active) and gave very detailed instructions about how to find them. Delightfully secluded premises with view over hills and river (also large car park but could easily look other way and invisible from garden, beautiful spacious rooms , very helpful staff, wonderful experience dining in room
Review 51:The ryokan is quite basic and the common areas in particular are in need of renewal. As a westerner the breakfasts offered weren't to my taste - that's my issue though not theirs!
Review 52:The dinners were very good, the people running the ryokan are very friendly. It's a very peaceful setting and worth a trip for anyone wanting to experience something more traditional than a regular hotel.
Review 53:This is a beautiful location along the river about 10 minutes outside of Hakone. The rooms are very comfortable and warm. The service is excellent and very personal – the attendants even bow to you as you leave on the bus! Excellent food that was explained by the hostess. Yukata and bath items made the stay comfortable. The onsen both outside and inside were wonderful to linger in. Even out teenagers loved their stay and want to return.
Review 54:Room was dated. Would have loved more time and flexibility on times in the private Onsen.
Review 55:The staff were friendly and welcoming. Food was excellent and abundant! The view and location were top. Private Onsen in the evening. Location was very private. Room was spacious.
Review 56:I felt it lacked alittle history. Too many levels and a lift.
Review 57:We had 3 rooms incl. bathroom and toilet. . Lovely walk in the garden to reach the outside onsen by the river was just perfect. We only requested breakfast and the young lady dressed in her kimono, prepared out room for the night while out. Shuttle bus out front of hotel is very handy.
Review 58:Located in a central area to both the Lake Ashi area and Ropeway. Everyone was friendly and had pretty good English language skills. I felt right at home and comfortable.
Review 59:Only public transportation is bus but the place is not so far from JR.
Review 60:All the things here are very impressive. I was very realax here. The ryokan is truely authentic. Outdoor onsen is spactacular. Especially the staffs are very humble, kind and helpful as the authentic Japanese style. I WILL COME BACK AGAIN NEXT TIME.
Review 61:Everything was perfect.
Review 62:The room and the view were perfect. The hotel personnel was wonderful and the food was amazing. If I was to come back to Hakone, I would definitely stay there again!
Review 63:The building is quite old and run-down (the walls and carpet are stained, the indoor baths are huge, but again, a bit old).
Review 64:The view from Hoeiso is amazing, the staff was very nice and friendly and the open air bath is great.
Review 65:Great large room (flat). Super nice and friendly staff. Good location with buses stoping just out front. Book the private onsen in avance, really really nice experience.
Review 66:The overall property is old with smell clinging to the old, stained carpet that lay on corridor in front of the room. Windows of my bedroom is dusty.
Review 67:The room is very big and the bedding is very comfy. Breakfast is excellent and public bath is roomy. There is a bus stop for K line (able to use with Hakone Free Pass) right in front of the hotel.
Review 68:The Japanese style food looked really nice and beautiful, but it wastooJapanese for us and the kids. The showers in the rooms could havebeen more "western", so we could choose between the onsenstyle bath, or in-room shower. It could have been cheaper, if we couldchoose not to eat in the hotel.
Review 69:It was different then staying in an regular hotel. The rooms were big.Private onsen bath was great!
Review 70:Loved our stay, including the kaiseki dinner and breakfast, the onsen (highly recommend booking the private session in the evening). What was best was the special consideration they gave our young kids, making kid-friendly fare like french fries and spaghetti for them as part of their kaiseki dinner.
Review 71:The location and the comfortable and homey stay at the Hoeiso made my trip very memorable. The food served is very good and the hotel staff are all so friendly and helpful!
Review 72:The place is relatively well maintained, but is in need of some renovations. Especially the bathrooms are way outdated! No serious problems, just think the place has a lot of potential that is unrealized.
Review 73:The spaciousness of the rooms and quality of the hot spring water. The friendly staff!
Review 74:Not many options on public baths (one public and one open air for each sex). Average dinner quality.
Review 75:Very traditional setting. Large room with separate sleep area. In-room dining.
Review 76:I'm Not a big fan of cold food in the morning so if you are like me, chose the western breakfast.
Review 77:This place will make you forget about the city life!!
Review 78:The service is top of the its class. We were treated like VIPs from the moment we set foot on the ryokan. Guests are ensured total privacy as all meals are served in-room. The staff is extremely polite and efficient. Highly recommend booking the private onsen (hot spring) in the evening at no extra charge. The kaiseki dinner is excellent! Overall, a highly enjoyable experience of a ryokan in Japan!
Review 79:Location is a bit far away from sightseeing spots so not really good for just one night (better two) No wifi in the room but at the lobby...enjoy no wifi why not lol
Review 80:Everything
Review 81:The setting was beautiful with the onsen located at the river. Very nice to be able to use it as a couple in the evening. Staff was friendly and helpful. Bus stops right outside the hotel. No complaints.
Review 82:Wifi was only accessible in the lobby
Review 83:Great Japanese experience! Very clean rooms, helpful staff (even with the very basic English that they could offer), amazing hot springs and breakfast in the morning (Japanese or Western, we were able to choose)
Review 84:Food was only decent (we couldn't fall in love with pheasant meat).
Review 85:Amazing room and staff was very friendly and attentive. The open air bath oversees the mountain and river and you can reserve the bath for your private use after 8PM. Location is pretty convenient (10mins bus from station) though it wil take 30 mins to travel to Lake Aashi. I used hakone free pass for all my transportation so that helped me save quite a bit. I've recommended this place to many of my friends who would be travelling to Hakone.
Review 86:We had the most relaxing stay for one night at Hoeiso Ryokan. The staff were incredible friendly and the little japanese we knew was no barrier. We booked a private onsen during the evening and it was stunning, overlooking the creek beside the hotel. The women who brought us our meals was so adorable and funny. She allowed us to feel extremely welcome and comfortable. The food was delicious, we had both dinner and breakfast. There was sooo much food, all amazing. Hoeiso kindly catered to the vegetarian requirements of one of our party. We would highly recommend this Ryokan, when we are next in Hakone we will definitely return.
Review 87:My stay was too short - only one night! The walk to the open air private bath was in the open. On a cold autumn night it was challenging.
Review 88:I love the big vanity area - though we only used the area when brushing our teeth and changing clothes. Most Japanese ryokans have small tiny attached bathroom.
Review 89:Signage for the 100 Yen Ryokan association shuttle bus could have been more prominent.
Review 90:Good spread of food. Good service. Lady who served us at the lobby remembered our request for a private slot for the onsen and also for a room with a view. We had a good view from our hotel room - 218.
Review 91:Some of the decor is a little worn, but this is part of staying in an historic location.
Review 92:The staff at Hoeiso were absolutely lovely, were able to communicate well in English, and went out of their way to make guests feel welcome. The meals were beautiful, including the pheasant dishes (the hotel's specialty). The outdoor onsen in particular was very scenic and relaxing, and is available for private bookings in the evening. I was slightly apprehensive about going to a small town as a non-Japanese-speaking solo traveller, but the kind locals and helpful staff made sure my trip went smoothly.
Review 93:Breakfast, although served in the room as dinner had been, was pedestrian. Perhaps the Japanese breakfast is better.
Review 94:Service was embarrassingly good. Dinner was superb. Onsen is amazing. Make sure you ask about reserving the outdoor baths for two. Stunning!
Review 95:Staying in a traditional ryokan is an experience that is easy to like and dislike at the same time. Fun and authentic it is a memorable thing to do. However, it is also expensive, uncomfortable and basic. The food, onsen and traditions make up for it all in my opinion, but not sure I would do ryokans throughout a long holiday...
Review 96:NIL.
Review 97:Warm and friendly staff. Excellent food and clean facilities. Very patient with the explanation as it was the first time for us staying at the ryokan
Review 98:Pillows were a little hard :)
Review 99:The food was delicious. I've never tried anything like it. The staff were uniquely delightful and the river side onsen was lovely.
Review 100:The pillows are quite uncomfortable. If you like hard and high pillows, then it'll be fine for you, otherwise bring your own or use some spare clothes. You cannot sleep in. Latest for breakfast is 8:30 am and for dinner is 7 pm. So you to have an early night in order to wake up early for breakfast. If you miss a meal, you won't get refunded for the meal, unless it's caused by typhoon. Great experience.
Review 101:The half boards were amazing and the futons were comfortable. Traveling light would be wise as transportation to the place is quite difficult. Hot spring was relaxing. Not many options but very clean and can reserve 30 min private outdoor hot spring experience. Staff kindly deducted some meal costs due to typhoon postponing our arrival. Can easily go out for lunch and sightsee via buses. Great experience.
Review 102:Upon arrival, my daughter and I were graciously greeted by staff and helped us immediately even though we arrived at 11:00 am (4 hours before check-in). The gentleman who helped us made recommendations on what to do and see so we decided on visiting a nearby onsen, a ten minute walk away and we were pleasantly surprised that this particular onsen exceeded our expectations (according to our tour book, it's one of the top rated onsens in the area). It was a "yokkatta" experience! When we officially checked in at 3:00, we were greeted by friendly, eager staff. The young lady who served us all of our meals showed us our room which was on the third floor overlooking the river the garden. The room was an end unit and very quite and large. The only complaint I have is the AC was on a timer and turned off several times during the night which made it uncomfortable. I had to turn it back on when it got too hot. The lady who served us our meals was very polite, friendly and professional. She was very sweet to us and a joy even though I had a hard time understanding her. She taught me a lot and now my Japanese is much stronger because I told her to speak to me in Japanese. My only other complaint is the decor which could use some updating but this is minor considering most traditional homes look this way speaking from experience. Our overall experience at Hoeiso was rewarding. The meals were exceptional, the riverside location is soothing, and the staff is topnotch. I would highly recommend this ryokan to anyone who wants to experience traditional Japanese living away from the hustle and bustle of cities.
Review 103:The hallway had some spots that must have had leaking because there was a musty smell in one area.
Review 104:Our hostess, Kokoro was wonderful. She explained everything to us in a cheerful manner. She was just so sweet. We were greeted at the bus stop and waved good-bye at the bus stop also! It was very quiet. I loved having the onsen to ourselves at night.
Review 105:This place worth maximum the half of the price we paid We make a difference between ancient or traditionnal, and overdated or old fashionned Equipment is poor, overdated
Review 106:We had an adorable and kind maid who was in charge of our stay Nice dinner Located just 10mn by feet from a great public onsen
Review 107:It's worth noting that tattoo'd guests are not allowed in the onsen during public opening hours. The outdoor onsen can be booked privately in half hour blocks from 8:20pm and those like myself with tattoos can use it then. We travelled during summer and it was extremely humid and our ensuite bath tub did smell mouldy.
Review 108:The staff spoke little English but their warmth and hospitality shone through. Service was top notch. Everything from fetching your slippers, setting up your dining table and laying and clearing away your futon beds. There is an indoor and outdoor onsen right by the river. I personally preferred the indoor one. The views from the property are lush and green and amazing. Dinner "peasant style dishes" was plentiful and I tried several dishes I've never seen in japanese restaurants such a raw pheasant which was actually delicious! We opted for japanese breakfast and it was yet another huge meal complete with freshly made tofu.
Review 109:The atmosphere is very relaxing. The service was awesome and friendly, I felt welcome the whole time. I was a bit scared about sleeping on a futon on the floor but I had a great night's sleep, it was very comfortable.
Review 110:Hmmm, wish we could stay longer...
Review 111:Fantastic opportunity to have onsen outside, next to the river, while listening to birds sing. Also they have an indoor onsen and of course my room had my own bathing area. The food is outstanding and featured several different pheasant dishes plus many more other courses. The staff work very hard to ensure your comfort and booked a massage for my friend, spoke English and Japanese, and carried our luggage onto the bus for us as we left. Highly recommend!
Review 112:Hotel location is serene with awesome mountain view. Very authentic ryokan. The rooms are large and clean, the staff are courteous and efficient. Food was delicious both japanese and western food. Good value for the money.
Review 113:Very friendly staff that did their best to make sure we had a comfortable stay. Beautiful location and charming aesthetics.
Review 114:No internet access in rooms
Review 115:Peacefull, quiet, and private
Review 116:It was pretty old, so it was quite expensive for just one evening!
Review 117:The breakfast was absolutely delicious, as well as the outdoor onsen.
Review 118:Excellent hotel staff and amazing outdoor onsen by the river.
Review 119:Price is not cheap and not enough hot dishes dinner and breakast
Review 120:Very nice place and good service
Review 121:The staffs were very attentive and helpful. The kaiseki dinner was excellent! The traditional breakfast too. The onsen was superb! Love it so much!
Review 122:The hotel is old and too far from yumoto station. Hotel did not have clear instructions on how to get to hotel
Review 123:Nice scenery and nice outdoor onsen
Review 124:Hope the check out time can be extended to 12 AM.
Review 125:My daughter really likes the hot spring.
Review 126:very nice hot spring!!
Review 127:The service and food in the room were incrdible. Scenery and the Hotspring were amazing.
Review 128:Nothing that I don't like.
Review 129:Staff was friendly and helpful. Beside a bus stop so transportation is quite convenient if you are not driving.
