Reviews for Sepilok Nature Resort
Review 1:Some refurbishment going on at the moment which could be slightly noisy at times.
Review 2:Brilliant location, very close to the wildlife sanctuarys (orangutang and sunbears - both incredible). Lovely setting and accommodation clean and comfortable with great views. Food very nice and extremely good value for money, staff very friendly. Definitely go on the night trek- it was great!
Review 3:Christmas music! Close to road, new developments close by, not really a natural setting
Review 4:Pleasant lakeside location, friendly helpful staff, close to Sunbear and Orang Utan sanctuaries
Review 5:Breakfast menu was a bit restrictive, but was good value and delicious.
Review 6:The resort is gorgeous, clean and the staff are attentive and friendly. I wouldn't get a transfer from resort- taxis are much cheaper and can be organised from airport on arrival. The big white circular restaurant next door is amazing value. We did a boat trip down the Kinabatangan River which was worth every cent...saw lots of wildlife in their actual habitat.
Review 7:The location is beautiful (in the rain forest), and one Oran Outang was welcoming us in front of the chalet. chalet is perfect : very confortable, clean, hamac on the terrace.. Very good food at the restaurant (+ very nice set up) people very friendly and helpful
Review 8:An almost perfect resort with very friendly personnel, great cabins, fantastic food in a super environment. We enjoyed every minute of the stay. Maybe the only thing lacking to make this a top ten is the lack of a pool of some sort.
Review 9:Beautiful room, very spacious and comfortable. Good bed and lovely bathroom. Fantastic gardens & Orang-utan experience. Good food and real coffee at the bistro. Great staff! Would recommend to everyone, closest to the sanctuary, relaxing environment and great accom!
Review 10:We made the 124 mile drive from Poring Hot Springs to the Sepilok Nature Resort in about 3 ½ hours and arrived at the hotel quite ‘fatigued’ after the continuous and frustratingly ‘stop-start’ driving patterns on Route 22. Reception clearly recognised our ‘state’, fed us liquid and surrounded us with staff to carry our bags over the bridge of the small lake to our bungalow. They’d allocated us one with 2 singles rather than a double but soon put that right and, for the next 3 hours we sat on the veranda, made ourselves a cocktail and quite marvelled at the manicured garden, lake and bird activity. A cacophony of jungle sounds (we’d not heard such to the same extent in the rest of Sabah) made us feel that we’d really arrived – at what we came to Borneo to experience. All the buildings here (in Bali style…albeit the owner says the architecture was his!) are in keeping with the environment and our bungalow could not have been more welcoming – in its open-plan design. Clean, cool and classic, it provided all that we needed. All meals on the balconies of the main house were very good and at reasonable cost, very-well served by extremely well-mannered and friendly young staff. A major bonus is its immediate proximity to the Orang-Utan Sanctuary. We made our second visit approx. one week later; on arrival, there was no record of our booking and we waited 20 mins or so for the situation to be sorted. We were allocated the VIP room but sadly it had not been prepared for occupancy and towels et al were missing. Nevertheless, notwithstanding the mistake, an effort was made. Were the Resort to be mine, I would tighten-up on staffs’ apparent laissez-faire attitude towards guests; maybe in times of lower occupancy, the Resort is over-staffed.
Review 11:Not actually a negative... But if you want access to bars and nightlife etc. This place is obviously not for you!
Review 12:Peaceful environment. Very helpful and friendly staff. Good location for visiting the orangutan sanctuary, and sun bears. There are a variety of tours on offer too, but we didn't do any as our stay was quite short. Don't expect there to be loads to do, there really isn't... This is for you if you just fancy taking in the wonder of the rainforest and having a quiet escape. Oh, and they make a killer margarita!
Review 13:The chalets were under renovation and we received an old chalet which was also close to the main lobby and restaurant (more noise). The TV was a very old one with only 6 channels. I should have more appreciate it if at the check-in, the staff should have asked us at what chalet we would like to stay.
Review 14:The trip to Borneo was left at the end of our trip in Southeast Asia. We didn't know what to expect exactly - mostly because there were not so much reviews for this place and the ones which existed were split reviews - some excellent reviews, other were bad. This place is purely beautiful, situated far from the busy city. We are going to find silence and quiet time to relax and enjoy the nature. The resort is composed of 22 or 23 chalets spread across a large part of a tropical forest. The rooms are large, with very large bathrooms, very clean, equipped with everything you would need. Due to high humidity, the towels were changed daily. Each chalet had its own beautiful view, with a relaxation space to enjoy the vegetation and the outside view. Near the resort you can find 3 of main touristic attractions, like: Orangutan rehabilitation centre, Sun bear rehabilitation centre and the Rainforest Discovery Centre (this one is ~15 minutes walk distance). The restaurant served excellent food, for breakfast, launch and dinner. Everything was added on the room expense and at the check-out we paid for everything. If you would some quite time and beautiful view over the lake, I highly recommend you to ask for chalet numbers17 to 23 during the check-in. Also, do not forget to bring with the a good DEET insect repellant - anything else will be useless.
Review 15:Excellent resort, excellent facilities, lovely staff, great food. Amazing. Singularly the best resort in Sabah. Wouldn't stay anywhere else when in Sepilok.
Review 16:Beer needs to be kept colder . Need to sort out wi fi so it works in the rooms , it was not very reliable in the room . We had to sit in the foyer to have reliable internet .
Review 17:We absolutely loved everything . From the very warm and friendly reception staff , who allowed us to check in early and stay in the room until midday the day of checkout . The restaurant staff were professional and very friendly and EVERY meal we had was delicious. The comfort of the room was amazing . Great air conditioning , very clean , courtesy umbrellas and a big comfortable bed . Keep up the good work guys , our two night stay at your resort was the highlight of our 4 week trip around Malaysia . Thank you .
Review 18:Poor breakfast, quite expensive in the restaurant, no possibilities to arrange a car rental or change money.
Review 19:Close to Sepilok Orangutan Centre, Comfortable villas
Review 20:The room was a little dated and the fridge made a spooky rattle. The tour guide pushed his own tours a little too hard when we first arrived which we didn't like. The prices for the tours were hugely inflated especially for the Probiscus monkey tour as you can do it yourself for a third of the price
Review 21:Perfect location for visiting the Bears and Orangutans. Fine for one evening. Drinks fairly priced. The food was okay too.
Review 22:Not applicable.
Review 23:The warm welcome at the entrance, the wide choice of food and drinks and the lounge area were excellent extras on top of the hammock outside our chalet. Our chalet was the best. Nr 9 it was. The location of the resort is also superb. Next door to orang utan and sunbear nursery/rehab centres.
Review 24:It's a very beautiful, clean and comfy place in the midst of nature. The "Sepilok Orangutan Rehab Centre", the "Bornean Sun Bear Conversation Centre" and the "Rainforest Discovery Centre" are just around the corner (in short walking distance). Also the "Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary" is Close (30 Min by taxi). Within 2-3 days you can experience all that. After that time it's a great place to rest and relax and enjoy the nature (but not much more to experience). In August all the orchids are blooming. Must be a paradise! The Location is great to hang out (also with kids or as groups). Good food! Very clean rooms! Awesome nature all around! We can also recommend a 2-day boattour on the Kinabatangan River in Sukau (to watch wildlife).
Review 25:AMAZING SETTING the huge pond the PERFECT staff the tours (cave & river, night walk) the food is AMAZING!!! This is by far one of the nicest hotels in Malysia! Honestly, I have seen 5 star hotels nit exhibiting such an awesome service. The Sepilok Nature Resort has the nicest staff one could ask for.
Review 26:Hard to organise a tour outside the resort; no breakfast included; not much to do so far out without a car
Review 27:The resort was beautiful; very relaxing, and the room had a hammock out the front; felt very natural; directly next door to the orangutan sanctuary
Review 28:I can only say their trip to one of the sanctuaries is expensive to a solo traveller but this was explained thoroughly to me before I decided to go
Review 29:I was welcomed by everyone and all the staff had a lot of time and interest to welcome me and talk to me (they're very knowledgable) - also I was given a delicious welcome drink. The scenery is beautiful, the chalets clean and comfortable and the location is perfect, 2 minutes walk to the sanctuary. The food and drinks are delicious. It is lovely and peaceful
Review 30:We liked everything about this place. Staff were wonderful, facilities great, gorgeous views over dinner on the doorstep. Beautiful tropical garden surrounding the chalets. And really not pretentious. Great mix of customers.
Review 31:Nothing to dislike at all...
Review 32:We love the peaceful environment. Me n my kids love being there n enjoyed our stay n my kids love to come back n enjoy the peace n quiet mother nature...oh ya we did enjoy the food also.
Review 33:Nothing. It was all good.
Review 34:Wooden chalets in a peaceful setting around a lake with wooden walkways connecting. Great food at very reasonable prices served by friendly, helpful staff. Just a few minutes walk from the Sepilok orang utans and the sun bear centre. We absolutely loved this place and would definitely stay again.
Review 35:Nothing
Review 36:Great location, great food (loved the vegetable curry), nice athmosphere, tiger beer for only 9 MYR, room was very comfortable and clean. We spotted nice birds in the garden (hornbill, sunbird)
Review 37:Nothing!
Review 38:The grounds were beautiful, the food was good (you even had cafe lattes!), the proximity to the orangutans and sun bears was great, the bed was comfortable, and the service was fabulous.
Review 39:We booked Room Only accommodation through booking.com but most people staying at the hotel were doing so on arranged tours so had all of their food included. I think Breakfast should be included as standard .
Review 40:Almost everything about this place was fantastic. Our room was huge and had fantastic lake views with a balcony to enjoy the setting. The restaurant and main area of the hotel are immaculate and in a very traditional style and the staff couldn't do enough to help.
Review 41:I loved this place so much that I came back.gorgeous chalets, delicious food, outstanding staff, grounds full of wildlife and plants. Peaceful, perfect- a slice of heaven.
Review 42:Wi fi can be improved to other areas. Other than the dinning area Some updates can be made in the room fixtures. Front desk staff require to be prepared to give guest Information on surrounding interest.
Review 43:Good location very close to the o/u rehab park very kind staff mainly the restaurant personnel Lots of. Nature and gardens are well looked after. Rooms are very clean and spacy.
Review 44:Very bad drain smell in room during rainfall - notified the staff who were quick to act on it, however the smell returned within an hour.
Review 45:Beautiful location - felt at one with nature (with the luxury of a clean and comfortable chalet). 5 minute walk from the orangutan and sun bear sanctuary.
Review 46:There is nothing that I didn't like about the nature resort, we can't wait to visit again.
Review 47:Everything! The setting, the staff, the facilities, accommodation, the jungle noises. Just everything was fantastic.
Review 48:The wifi is quite patchy. Not a big deal as it's a remote spot but it would be frustrating if you were trying to plan for your trip
Review 49:This is such an amazing spot! We had a wonderful stay. The setting is beautiful and in an ideal location for visiting key sites. The food was great - solid breakfast and really delicious Asian dishes for lunch and dinner. Would happily go back!
Review 50:No real problems.
Review 51:Great guides and interesting tours on the river and land. Particularly liked the frequent river rides and the great spotting ability of the tour guides.
Review 52:Stunning location, cute changes, very helpful and cheerful staff and good food and great juices. Absolutely perfect for a short break in Sepilok to see/experience all the wildlife the area has to offer.
Review 53:Lack of pressure in the showers. Wouldn't recommend the night time nature walk, seems like a bit of a con, unlikely to see anything exciting and it's over-priced. Reception staff are pushy with their tours, which are very expensive in comparison to others. Taxi quotes are outrageous, you're better off walking to the orangutang centre and getting in a red taxi there.
Review 54:Well located next to both the orangutang and sun bear centres. Good and well priced food in the restaurant. Unique and spacious chalets.
Review 55:No Wifi in the rooms but not a big deal
Review 56:Brilliant location, within walking distance of the orang utan rehab centre, bear rehab centre and the rainforest discovery centre, food in the restaurant was very nice, lovely setting looking out over the lake
Review 57:Superb resort with excellent access to nearby nature reserves, orangutan sanctuary and Sun bears. Great food and accommodation was both luxurious and spotless. Beautiful place - we felt very spoiled and would highly recommend this as the best place we stayed in the whole time we were in Borneo
Review 58:No wifi in room, but not a huge issue.
Review 59:Superb! Great location to visit the sanctuaries nearby. Very peaceful and in a wonderful setting. You are totally removed from the hustle and bustle. The perfect location if you are in need of a break from work and require time to unwind.
Review 60:Food was acceptable but could be a lot better - more choice, especially of local food.. Staff slow to replace bathroom consumables.
Review 61:Location, setting, chalets, friendly and helpful staff.
Review 62:We stayed for 6 nights and found ALL the staff happy, helpful and welcoming. All the staff were ready to chat but were not at all intrusive. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Meals at the resort are varied, plentiful and delicious. Meals are taken on the decking overlooking the lake, where we were able to bird watch and also saw monitor lizards swimming across the lake in the evening. There is a beautiful upstairs area solely for residence use. We sat on large bean bags and hanging chairs soaking up the peaceful atmosphere. The owner was regularly seen mingling with guests to ensure all were having an enjoyable experience. First class resort which is highly recommend for it's close proximity to what sepilok has to offer.
Review 63:The staff seems to be stressed and afraid that they might do or say something wrong. In the end, it makes me as a guest feel uneasy. At some point my conversation with one of the waitresses was interrupted by a bossy and arrogant staff manager who overheard us and considered that the waitress was not giving the proper answer to my questions.
Review 64:Room not very secure and no safe. Breakfast not included - had to pay. separately.
Review 65:Friendly staff. Beautiful setting. Large fridge. Large firm bed. Good sized room. Porter. Very peaceful (except on Satyrday when the restaurant became crowded). Ample parking with a warden.
Review 66:- We in the afternoon and a in the late afternoon we discovered that they offered jungle walks. So we wanted to sign up for it but it was only possible before 5 pm. But they actually do not promote their acativities anywhere and we just could not know about when and where to sign up. It would have been great if the staff informed us at the check-in about the possibilities.
Review 67:- Very clean room/chalet. We loved the bathroom. - Lounge area is very nice. - Very near Orang Utan rehabilitation centre - They offer Jungle walks.
Review 68:Pushy staff! Breakfast sets. My request for fruit denied. I think that this is poor. Hint: Don't bother to eat at the resort. There is a much better choice just a one minute walk away...the big round restaurant situated on the road. Just look for it at the top of the lake-side board-walk. The food there is cheap, fresh and top class!
Review 69:Sepilock Nature Resort is located about 25 kilometres west of Sandakan in the state of Sabah and is ideally situated right on the door-step of The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Sun Bear centres. Further to this, the Rain Forest Education is just a five minute drive away. The Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is just a 20 minute drive. The resort chalets are surrounded by verdant tropical vegetation. They are clean and offer luxury accommodation within the jungle. Recommended length of stay: Five or six days.
Review 70:amazing service, the staff was lovely. Beautiful set up, can't fault it. An amazing little jungle-like oasis super close to the orangutans. Would definitely recommend!!
Review 71:We booked a nightwalk in the jungle at the reception. When we arrived it appeared that our guide allready left home, because it was raining. Disappointing! When it was raining the smell of the drain came into the room. Probably because the bathroomarea is open.
Review 72:Very nice park with nice gardens. We had a large room with veranda and 4 beds (don't know why). Early check-in wasn't a problem at all. Nice restaurant with good food. Nearby Sepilok Orang Oetan Centre, Sunbear Centre and Discovery Gardens.
Review 73:Do not stay in cabin 6. For some reason the windows in the bathroom do not close and the refrigerated air conditioning will not cool down the room at all! We requested a move and were happily given number 26.
Review 74:Cabin was lovely, very comfortable. Close to Orangutan sanctuary, right next door!
Review 75:Everything was good here. We had a great time. The only small issue is that WiFi is only available in the reception area
Review 76:This resort is lovely and the landscaping is quite beautiful with numerous orchids and other plants. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are spotless and well maintained. Really cold AC too. Great value for money. Large front porches provided a relaxing place to read. The common area of the resort is well designed for comfort.
Review 77:English knowledge of the majority part of staff could be improved, especially staff in the restaurant.
Review 78:Comfortable accommodation, cleanliness. Excellent facilities. A great starting point for trips. Nice location for relax in the middle of nature.
Review 79:Staff knowledge was poor, even thought they were friendly you could tell they didn't know much about the menu or just any question in general.
Review 80:Location is excellent, right next to the oerangatang centre and surrounded by nature. The resort looks amazing and is such a great place to relax! I highly recommended this resort.
Review 81:Food was good but would have preferred more local touch. We stayed only one night just to go to Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation center, which is very close, but not sure if there would be enough activities if staying for longer.
Review 82:The rooms are small villas which you have all on your own, villas are nice, new and comfortable. Really liked how the surroundings were organized, like small jungle paradise with many exotic flowers and etc.
Review 83:Very tasteful buildings, in keeping with the backdrop of the rainforest; also great service from friendly staff, fine food and good advice on what to do
Review 84:My room had no desk, chair or safe. The TV, which didn't work, had a lot of dust on it's stand. The waste basket contained the rubbish left by the previous guests.
Review 85:The resort is in a beautiful natural environment, close to the orange utan centre. (The map on the site of booking.com wrongly places it on the outskirts of Sandakan, which is actually the location of the resort's office). The restaurant serves good vegetarian dishes.
Review 86:The transfer for the river and caves tour. The journey was only an hour and a half but the hotel really has to get a vehicle with better suspension. The most uncomfortable road trip for many years.
Review 87:The staff and the setting of the hotel.
Review 88:The only negative, is that the hotel said they would pick us up from the airport for MYR109 (about £20), which is a rip off. It is very easy to get a cab from the airport which costs just MYR40 (c.£7.50). When you leave, just get a taxi from the Sepilok nature reserve and it will cost you the same, MYR40.
Review 89:The location is spectacular. Beautiful cottages set around a lake, in a very peaceful environment. It is very sympathetically done, and oozes style. 2 minutes walk to the Orang-utan/Sun Bear sanctuaries too.
Review 90:I loved sitting in the public area near the big pond on a day bed. So quiet and relaxing. Eating and drinking at this resort was very reasonable. Highly recommend.
Review 91:No swimming pool
Review 92:Welcome drink was a nice touch. Staff couldn't be more helpful. Food was lovely and good value. Excellent location. Wonderful clean and large rooms with a nice bathroom. Couldn't fault the place.
Review 93:Location, facilities, friendly helpful staff
Review 94:Wonderful staff, excellent service, great room and ambiance, delicious food, short walk to sanctuary, best value for money
Review 95:Rooms feel a little bit tired.
Review 96:Friendly staff, great location. Nice food.
Review 97:We had a bungalow by the lake. Really tranquil place. Very spacious.
Review 98:a pool would make this more than perfect
Review 99:Amazing rooms, great food and friendly service
Review 100:Food choices ok but limited. Bar should be open longer hours
Review 101:Very good guides and staff
Review 102:Maybe a pool for swimming.
Review 103:Everything - lovely staff, excellent food - really good value for money.
Review 104:Mosquitos (there were loads).
Review 105:Room, food and setting
Review 106:Not much to dislike no wifi in rooms and a pool would be nice!
Review 107:Convenient location, great accommodation and friendly staff.
Review 108:Breakfasts could have been better.
Review 109:Privacy and freedom of staying in chalet.
Review 110:Staying just one night.
Review 111:Wonderfoul place. Schedule two nights there minimum. Consider this place to finish your stay in Sabah.
Review 112:I like everything about the resort especially the lake view..so relaxing..:)
Review 113:Restaurant has limited health food choices.
Review 114:Jungle paradise nesr orangutan sanctuary.
Review 115:Food and drinks closed too early. 9.30pm one night.
Review 116:Menu could be expanded. After 3 nights was becoming too boring.
Review 117:Leaving
Review 118:Great value for money.
Review 119:It was very peaceful and the staff were lovely great place to stay and to visit the Orangutans and Sun Bears
Review 120:mosquitos, no wifi, not convenient to city center.
Review 121:near utan orang park, Rainforest discover center. Environt quite good.
Review 122:Clean with friendly staff. Great location next door to Sepilok orangutan sanctuary.
Review 123:Location next to the orang Iran and sun bear sanctuaries. Quality of accommodation. Staff service. Facilities generally. Local cultural show.
Review 124:Amazing location, beautiful grounds, incredible staff and delicious food
Review 125:The rooms are luxurious and set in beautiful grounds. It is a really lovely place to relax. The food is excellent and the staff were very helpful
