Reviews for Ryokan Seifuso

Review 1:Nothing

Review 2:Great ryokan, quiet, Very clean you feel at home. The owners are Very friendly, welcoming people, and Very helpful. (Advising, explaining, etc) Do not hesitate to try the breakfast (homemade yoghurt is delicious). The public bath is also great! Thank you again okami-san for everything Karim&Sma

Review 3:We stayed in the family room in the annex, so cannot attest to the main building...BUT...I would not stay here again. As others say the location is a way from town centre, yes it has free bikes and a nice thing to do, but all need maintenance...gears/brakes don't all work ..my son hit a wall and came off completely as brakes failed (thankfully only tearing his jacket)...the shared shower facilities in the annex are poor and filthy (was unable to attach photos, but have many). Shared kitchen facilities basic...no glasses, only plastic cups...not nice for wine...and could only find 3 chopsticks. Only one comfortable couch to relax on, the cane chairs very uncomfortable and we needed to spend more time in the room than we'd hoped due to the cold and public holiday when everything was closed (which we didn't know) ...a fact not mentioned to us by hosts as we collected keys and cycled off for the day... nor were we offered any of the other things pointed out by other reviewers (which is why we chose this place)...no discount tickets to the castle...no tea making ceremony etc...we just ate on the floor and slept on a mattress on the floor & that was out "Japanese experience" Would not recommend.

Review 4:Totally agree with others, this place has wonderful friendly hosts, but thats where my agreement stops.. Cannot understand the other reviews giving such high score.

Review 5:The common showers of the ryokan part were a little bit old.

Review 6:The staff us really friendly and helpful. The room was a traditional Japanese style ryokan and the beds were very comfortable. They have their own Japanese hot bath tub, where you can relax. They serve an excellent Japanese breakfast!!!

Review 7:Lovely, very helpful couple and daughter made our stay a pleasure, as well as the journey from and to the station.beautiful room, delicious breakfast, highly recommended.

Review 8:Great service from the staff (or actually - the family running the place). Very nice location, though far from the city center but the hotel arranges transport from and to the station.

Review 9:It is a bit further away from Matsumoto city centre, but if you're a confident cyclist, you can borrow a good quality bicycle from Ryokan Seifuso at no extra cost. This is a great way to visit Matsumoto city and to head out to Asama onsen. Alternatively, there's a regular bus route which runs behind Ryokan Seifuso that can take you straight into town.

Review 10:It is run by a very welcoming and friendly family. They will pick you up and drop you off at the station and they will also help you with advice on where to go. I really wish I'd gone to Asama onsen, which is quite close by, but I enjoyed my visit to the wasabi farm! There are lots of big stores and a good mix of restaurants nearby if you want to eat out nearby. Ryokan Seifuso is extremely good value for money and I would stay there again.

Review 11:Great owners Allowed us a private onsen with the family in evenings Picked us up n dropped us off to station. Not in centre of town but doesn't matter as they are so lovely and helpfull and let us catch a ride into centre town when someone else checked out. Nice noodle dinner around the corner. Breakfast in the morning is good value and great yogurt and family made honey.

Review 12:Ryokan Seifuso was the first Japanese Ryokan establishment we visited during our time in Japan and immediately loved it! Everything starts with a great hospitality. The Ryokan, so it seems, is being run by a single Japanese family and they're so cute! Father has picked us up and returned us to the station (amazing fellow). The mother has taken our reservation, did the map of the surrounding and the guided tour of the Ryokan itself and offered us the breakfast option (western / japanese) and the daughter speaks the most English of all has reserved for us the private time in an Onsen on the premises :). Despite what we heard of the way Japan presents western breakfast: the one we got in the Ryokan was amazing and elegant! During our stay in Matsumoto we have also visited the Matsumoto Castle, which is only a 25 minute walk from the Ryokan (you can take the bus, but we wanted to explore on foot). You can also use the complementary free bike rentals at the Ryokan (my wife doesn't ride those... so once again: on foot). The Ryokan offers discount tickets for it, so don't forget to mention it. At the evening we reserved some private time in the onses (which was our first as well) and just as the rest of the place: it was neatly organized and left a lasting impression. In summary: very friendly hosts, amazing breakfast, quiet place, pickup option and free bikes :)! Bear in mind: Matsumoto is a small town. Thus most of the restaurants might close as early as 7 pm. Thus eat your dinner early :). There are a lot of small cute places in a walking distance from the Ryokan. We kind of missed the 7pm mark and still found a great Japanese place with traditional rise/soup/pork shnitzel course :). Recommend!

Review 13:Still could not get used to shared bathroom even though it was clean.

Review 14:Very friendly and informative staff. Was a surprise to see my name at the front of the entrance to welcome my stay. Place was kept clean.

Review 15:Very friendly hosts who picked us up from the train station and gave great info in English regarding local onsens and things to do. Quiet room and good value for money

Review 16:Great price, great staff, bikes free to use and transfer from and to the station. Breakfast was nice and with fresh fruit :) Matsumoto is nice!

Review 17:Hotel is far from the city center (though they offer free bikes) Our room had musky old wood smell Public bath is underwhelming Men's public bath is in poor condition (moss and peeling paint)

Review 18:People who run it are nice and welcoming Offered us advice on attractions (and discount on main attraction) Picked us up from station (and drove us to station early in the morning) Bedding and sheets appeared and smelled clean WiFi is very fast

Review 19:Very homely feel. Ascot, the daughter was really helpful. There was also free pick up from the airport. The surrounding area is truly serene and quiet. Like it very much. Will definitely be back and recommend it to friends.

Review 20:It is a little far from the station and other attractions.

Review 21:Great room in the annex. Breakfast was very good. Take advantage of the ride to/from the station.

Review 22:We had two inter communicating rooms in the ryokan annex which was perfect for our family of five. However our children got woken up early by the strong morning sun as the window in their room had no blind but they did not really mind. There was also a faint unpleasant smell in the room so the lady gave us an electric air freshener.

Review 23:The kindness and helpfulness of the staff. Being able to use the ryokan bikes. The hand drawn maps to find our way around the town. The hot bath. Also as the ryokan had run out of money off vouchers for Matsumoto castle we were given 200 yen each instead which was a lovely gesture. We also appreciated the free parking for our rental car,

Review 24:Beautiful location, wonderful to be there after most tourists gone. Night stroll was magic. Traditional meals were superb- and the only option. If you are travelling with children who are fussy eaters bring supplies.

Review 25:Nothing bad to say

Review 26:The location was perfect, clean and comfortable. Our hosts were extremely helpful and free bike hire a bonus. Best way to see Matsumoto.

Review 27:The owners are super friendly and organised. We were travelling with three kids 11, 9 and 5. Just arrived from a small apartment in Kyoto. Kids were happy to find a spot of grass over the road and the owners' son to kick a ball with. Free bikes were another hit. The room was comfortable with futon beds and plenty of room for five. Hot baths were relaxing. Good breakfast. Hosts were very helpful with maps and directions. They even dropped our bags at the train station for us so we could sightsee without dragging our luggage. definitely one of the best value places we stayed in Japan.

Review 28:The shower room was the only down side. Needed a little update.

Review 29:Wonderful service. Great advice about where to go and how to get there. We used their free bikes to ride to see the castle, and they gave us a lift to the station when we left.

Review 30:Nothing!

Review 31:Wonderful stay. Family atmosphere and very helpful staff. Our Japanese style room was clean and spacious. Shared bathroom was also well maintained and comfortable. Free bikes for hire provided fast and fun transport to places of interest in Matsumoto.

Review 32:I actually really loved that this place is a little off the beaten path. The staff was super friendly and came to pick me up at the train station (and later took me back the following day after check out). Nearby, they have a bunch of onsen options, great food and neighborhood gems (the staff have great recommendations!). Very tranquil and traditional - would love to come back!!

Review 33:With many possibilities for onsen, eating and general sightseeing nearby, seifuso is a great place to stay when visiting matsumoto. It is run by a family that go to great lengths to make you feel at home throughout, and the free bikes make getting around matsumoto as easy as pie. The owners are more than willing to help with finding places of interest, and talk about japanese culture and history. All in all, if you want an affordable home-away-from-home, with a pleasant atmosphere, and a chance to get to know the japanese people, seifuso is the place to go!

Review 34:Warm welcome and great hospitality at this family-owned B&B. I appreciated their pick-up service from the railway station, more than you would expect from a reasonably priced B&B.

Review 35:Whereas the main building ( where breakfast is served) was warm and comfortable, we felt being out in the annexe building was somewhat of a let down, and the area around the back of the annexe where the entrance door was needed some attention.

Review 36:The owners are there to help, and offer a warm welcome to their home. The main dwelling was warm and comfortable in the cool Matsumoto weather. Lots of local advice and a very helpfull lift back to the station on our departure.

Review 37:- Helpful and friendly staff. One of the receptionists (young female with funky dyed hair) speaks very good English, which is very helpful. - Shared baths, which is a fun (or shocking) experience with friends. Great to be able to soak in the small bath after a long day of walking - clean and roomy space. - will definitely go back again! didn't have time to try their breakfast but wished that I had.

Review 38:Admittedly, it was not expensive but I still expected a better experience, I might have missed the fact that showers were to be shared so was shocked to see that ( though not their fault). However, the place was much smaller than I thought, hardly any room in the bedroom and the bedding looked suspiciously not that clean!

Review 39:I did not enjoy the stay at all!

Review 40:Nothing.

Review 41:Loved this place. Wonderful Japanese-style room, very friendly staff, impeccably clean shared facilities, wonderful to be able to use bikes, delicious Japanese breakfast, nice places to eat nearby.

Review 42:We appreciated pick-up service from train station. We were in the annex, and enjoyed the tatami room / futon sleeping arrangements. Great breakfasts - we tried both Japanese and Western style. Thoroughly enjoyed kimono wearing and tea ceremony evening. Lovely family-run establishment!

Review 43:The room was squeezy, but definitely not unpleasant.. cold at first but the lovely reception lady sorted it out.

Review 44:The family, the Japaneseness, the location, the slippers, the breakfast, the snow. Advice on where to go and what bus to take.

Review 45:It was wonderful to be picked up at the train station and also returned there after our stay. Very friendly and helpful owners. Matsumoto castle is awesome!

Review 46:If you want to experience a green tea ceremony, this is the place. We were dressed in traditional Japanese kimonos. They were beautiful! The lady who dressed us had great experience in the tradition of the kimono and the way to put it on. It's very involved. We loved the opportunity to dress up and learn the green tea ceremony. The price is very affordable. Highly recommend this place.

Review 47:We had to use the shared bathroom facilities, the annexe was out of use, not a big deal in truth!

Review 48:Friendliness of owners, they gave us lifts to Castle and Station in the snowy weather.

Review 49:Very nice people, always willing to help. Very good cooking for breakfast. Quiet place and nice rooms with everything needed. Bikes available if necessary and very confortable bathing place!!

Review 50:Location was excellent for getting about. Owners so helpful & friendly. Traditional style rooms so comfortable & clean. Free pick up from train station & use of bicycles, great for getting around

Review 51:Ryokan Seifuso is a great place to stay in Matsumoto. When I got to the train station I called them and they came quickly to pick me up. The room was nice and clean and overlooked the small river flowing nearby. They provide really neat hand drawn maps of the area with recommendations and free bikes to get around town. Breakfast was great and they provided a ride back to the train station which was really helpful. I would recommend this to anyone staying in Matsumoto, it is a little bit away from the center of town, but with the bike this isn't a problem.

Review 52:We found it quite cold in the room- middle of winter. I think the heater was ineffective

Review 53:Lovely friendly and helpful family run business.

Review 54:Staff were very friendly and helpful. It was also great to hire bikes for free to explore Matsumoto. We had a lovely stay.

Review 55:Staff are so helpful and friendly. Beds are very comfortable and good amount of space in accommodation. Great to use bikes to ride around town.

Review 56:Very welcoming and helpful staff

Review 57:Room not big enough for us and luggage.

Review 58:Wonderful hosts.

Review 59:Fantastic staff. They spoke english very well. Very easy and free transfer from the station

Review 60:Friendly, helpful staff. Great breakfast. Good location. Not quite Central but close to everything.

Review 61:No complaints

Review 62:Bikes. Pick up and drop off. Very friendly and helpful staff

Review 63:Great ryokan with all the facilities & lovely owners.

Review 64:This Ryokan was extremely clean. The staff were very kind and helpful, and spoke a bit of English!

Review 65:We had a family room in the annex..almost a suite. Owners were great.Free pick up and drop off if you need it.

Review 66:the room is very comfortable, hosts are very kind, there are free bicycles, the location is very convenient

Review 67:commen areas could be more consistent with Ryokan-Style

Review 68:extremely friendly staff great japanese breakfast

Review 69:Great hospitality. Beautiful city at the foot of the alps. Easy to access everything by bicycle which were free to borrow.

Review 70:Very friendly and helpful staff, bike rental is great and the location very cozy!

Review 71:Distance from city

Review 72:Friendly hosts Convenient pickup Good local information provided Bathhouse

Review 73:Excellent hospitality, beautiful room with tea and the most comfortable futon.

Review 74:Excellent host Great location by the river. All attractions close by Great facilities Everything you need

Review 75:far from the city center (but they give free bicycle if you want)

Review 76:very nice staff nice place in house onsen

Review 77:Friendly place. Although remote, the free bikes were very convenient to get around.

Review 78:Nothing. Perfect stay for us and well priced

Review 79:Friendliness , value, free use of bikes, handy to spa town, size of family room for the 4 of us

Review 80:All extras such as tea ceremony were booked out in advance, and in house onsen was very small

Review 81:Owners were very helpful and friendly

Review 82:I 100%recommend this place. The staff are friendly & speak great English. Free bikes, microwave, hot water & supermarket nearby. Plus they have a washing machine. Kamikochi is close by for a day trip & you can ride to the alps park. I would stay at this place again, thank you very much :)

Review 83:Location was a bit out of the way (though free rental bikes helped with this!). While adorable, their hand-drawn restaurant maps were not very helpful. We tried to find several things and found some closed, some out of business, and the one we did find was not very tasty.

Review 84:We had a very nice stay and particularly appreciated the nice couple that runs this inn. They promptly picked us up from the train station and helped us organize our plans. We also took advantage of their very nice and affordable tea ceremony - I think it is pretty rare for the tea master to let Westerners try making their own tea! The free bike rentals were also a plus since the inn is a bit far for walking from the town center.

Review 85:Loved the area and the staff were so friendly and helpful the ryokan was very comfortable and very clean and had excellent facilities, I would love to come back

Review 86:We loved this place. The family that runs it is lovely and pays attention to every detail to make the guest have an authentic and welcoming Ryokan experience. They even lent us bikes to go to the castle and drove us back to the station. Also the breakfast was yummy.

Review 87:It is a good half an hour brisk walk to the town centre.

Review 88:Shuttle service from the train station on arrival and at departure. Breakfast was wholesome and sufficient. Coffee available in the dining room throughout the day although we did not know till our departure. It was our first time sleeping on tatami mats but we found it very comfortable. Entry ticket to castle and castle museum sold at half the price at the ryokan. San Atsuko Tanaka speaks fluent English and was able to address our needs.

Review 89:This is a lovely family-run and super-friendly place to stay. A bit out of the centre but the family were incredibly helpful about giving us lifts to the centre, and collecting us from (and to) the station. Matsumoto is close to the Japanese Alps and we had a great view of the distant mountains from our bedroom window. The ryokan is spotless. Iced water available free of charge from a fridge on the landing. A lovely tea-set in the room. The daughter of the family speaks excellent English and was extremely helpful with suggestions about what to see and where to eat. They also have brilliant hand drawn maps of the centre of Matsumoto which provide a great visual guide to good shops, bars and restaurants.

Review 90:Relaxing place, Very Friendly people. Free bycicles to go to the castle and the Center. Wifi available. Good apanese or european breakfast. Even helped to bring our rucksack , which we forgot, to the station by car.

Review 91:Nothing negative at all.

Review 92:The staff were very accommodating and friendly. They provided us with free bicycle hire when we arrived to ride along the canal into town which was very scenic, and also provided very helpful maps with restaurant recommendations. We were running late for our private booking of the hot bath, and the staff changed the time for us with no problem. It was a great first experience of a Japanese hot bath, because although not a natural hot spring, it allowed my partner and I to experience it together and get used to the bathing process in Japan before we had to do it by ourselves. The food was also amazing!

Review 93:We borrowed the bikes to ride into town along the river. The family room was quite spacious and had the communal kitchen adjoining it. A low table with a heated blanket under was a cosy Japanese touch, as was the green tea set. The bath was so hot I couldn't sit in it for long, and then we ate at one of the local restaurants around the corner. The daughter speaks very good English.

Review 94:Great set up for families with 2 rooms near each other and small kitchen in between. A little way out of town but walking and cycling distance fine and near very good supermarket and several restaurants. Also train station free transport very efficient. Very friendly helpful staff with cheap castle tickets and gave us delicious apples on departure.

Review 95:Shared bathroom was not so clean.

Review 96:This is a very cozy place to stay in Matsumoto. We were fetched promptly from train station. Our ryokan room was big enough for the five of us. The beds were comfortable. We had access to kitchen with complete facilities. Breakfast was very good and plenty. Free use of bikes was great! Place was near big grocery and surrounded by small restaurants with authentic japanese cuisine! We had a wonderful time !

Review 97:rooms were a little small

Review 98:friendly and helpful staff free bikes made seeing the city very convenient transfer to and from the train station were fantastic

Review 99:The owners are incredibly nice and speak English. They pick you from the station (for free). There are many bikes that you can use to visit town (free). Laundry is available for a small fee. The owners provide maps with restaurants, cafes and sights in town. Don't expect a traditional or luxurious ryokan, but an friendly, affordable place.

Review 100:The owner is well English speaking and helpful. Hotel offer detailed map for us with useful information. Clean and cozy. Strongly recommend! Anyway, we rent the car and have no problem to get to the ryokan but it's not located very near the train station, may not easy for someone else who ride on the train.

Review 101:We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this ryokan. The owners arefriendly and accommodating, and it really helped to have the mapslisting favorite places to eat and things to do. The location is good ifyou want to see the castle, and take in an onsen at Asama. The Inn wasvery clean, and our room was very comfortable. Our 8 year old lovedsleeping on the futon in our traditional room, and the ofuro was a greatcultural experience. Don't miss the delicious breakfast for a truetaste of Japan.

Review 102:Nothing in particular!

Review 103:Seifuso is a very nice family run ryokan, near the attractive Asama Onsen area. The family takes care of their guests in a very helpful and personal way. It feels like being home.

Review 104:Lovely ryokan, run by a very friendly couple who speak English. We chose the Western style breakfast which was very good. Free coffee available for guests. Bikes are free to hire and they will pick you up and return you to the station, so the fact it is a little out of town does not really matter. We walked to the castle in about 30 mins. There are restaurants within walking distance of the ryokan.
