Reviews for Aso Base Backpackers
Review 1:Short check in time (4 to 8 pm only). If the bed with curtain will be much better.
Review 2:Good location, very near the train station. For dorm, only 4 beds per room. Very clean and warm (during winter).
Review 3:When there are many people, it can be a bit noisy. There are written instructions. But everyone does not respect them.
Review 4:An excellent location (close to train station and bus terminal). Very clean. Good value for money.
Review 5:My first hostel experience and I would says you guys made it to top list ! Thank you for everything we're really enjoyed our stay would come back again if we're going to Japan ??
Review 6:Basically nothing was bad...
Review 7:This place is awesome in every way! It's the cleanest place I've ever visited. Has a homely feel to it. Beats ANY hotel every day of the week!
Review 8:NA
Review 9:the owner seems a good traveller himselves, coz all the facilities are so amazing for visitors. Convenient location; fantasitic building that feel like home; good kitchen & cleansing facilities; nice bathroom & washroom; comfortable spacious beds; provide individual locker, lamp & socket; with good quality of daily products.
Review 10:Loved the design. Space was so well thought out. Common area was really inviting and the guests socialized there. Great place to meet people and plan your day.
Review 11:None.
Review 12:- Only 5 minutes by foot from the trainstation - great and very clean kitchen und common area - feels like a home away from home - you can get helpful maps and advice for hiking on the vulcano craters and the area - very comfy beds - small dorms available with 4 beds - the owners really put their heart into creating and designing this place, everything is very nice and full of warmth - it feels like a real backpacker with people from many different countries - the common areas encourage conversations and talks with others
Review 13:Nothing, just one small advice, when bathing you have to press the handle about every 10 sec to save the water I suppose, hopefully it could be longer to make it more convenient.
Review 14:Stunning backpacker! Very big and cozy space downstairs, including a Japanese tatami open space. Owner couple have placed lots of interesting decorations and the clock is made of a plate in particular! Our room window was facing the volcano. Facilities very clean, and they use Muji products for public hygiene.
Review 15:The best hostel I've stayed in Japan during 10 weeks! You will like at home. Super cosy, super comfy. We were all sad that we couldn't stay longer just to enjoy the hostel while reading. Great kitchen!
Review 16:Reception is only open at specific times and hence check in must be done from 16:00-20:00
Review 17:Very close to the station, lots of information and maps available, lockable luggage storage under the beds
Review 18:The double bed was a little small for 2 adults. If it is winter, it is okay. But if it is summer, it is not good. You can smell foul odor from the shoes in the porch.
Review 19:It has a large garden for you to park a car. I think it was bulit recently. So clean. Especially you can look at Mt. Aso from your room if you open a curtain. The prcie was reasonable... not so high and not so low
Review 20:The operation hour of front desk can be longer ( should start earlier)
Review 21:Love the common area. The wood decorations gave us a warm feeling , just like a home . The staff are really nice and willing to provide with good English.
Review 22:Check in time is with in 20:00 so if you need to check in after the time you need to contact the staff in advance and please make sure they remember it. if not they will not allow you to check in.
Review 23:Close to Aso train station. Bed very comfy we don't need to wake up again loll
Review 24:Only one thing - a room with shoes definitely needs an air refreshener.
Review 25:Much better than most hotels. Double rooms are comfortable and facilities are great and super clean. Staff was very helpful. Free coffee, tea in a beautiful kitchen. Probably best place to stay in Japan.
Review 26:Everything was great: the staff, location, the beds, the kitchen, the lounge. These people have understood wat a backpacker place should be. I;ve seen many hostels but this is number one!
Review 27:The place is very clean and quiet, decoration is cute and beautiful, feels like home. The owners were very nice and helpful. You have plenty common areas for reading and conversation. Shower rooms, toilets, face washing places are all very clean and well equipped. There's even a dressing room, balcony and deck. This is by far the best backpackers I've ever been!
Review 28:Very conveniently located, walking distance from the Aso train station with an ATM and supermarket across the street. You'll find clean showers, comfortable bunk-beds and a stylish cabin interior. Variety of amenities in the kitchen and bath areas are unbelievable for the room rates. Bonus: If you are planning on hiking up Aso-san, you can ask for trails tips/suggestions at the reception.
Review 29:Not applicable.
Review 30:Everything. The advise, easy to find, very clean, great common room. Good hearty meals are available at 'East' or you can prepare a meal yourself. Lovely cat.
Review 31:This facility is new, stylish and very clean. It is only few minutes from JR Aso station. I heard from locals that it is the best facility among this price range.
Review 32:Everything is new and clean, very spacy and quiet. The atmosphere us very cozy with common area and fireplace. Kitchen is big and clean and has everything you need to cook. You feel like staying at a friends place rather than a hostel
Review 33:Lack of eating places around, but thats not the hostel's fault :)
Review 34:Clean, have everything for stay, felt very welcome and at home, had useful information on everything around aso for tourist, a must stay in!
Review 35:The hostel is extremely close to the train station and bus station. They even have better facilities than some of the basic hotels in Japan. The decoration and interior are very modern and cute. There common areas are very friendly and you can have more room to relax than staying in a small hotel room.
Review 36:bedrooms are the best I have seen for a hostel, great living-room area, and facilities rival some better hotels! Bike rental, and great maps of local area, and further around the Caldera and for climbing up to Aso.
Review 37:It's just a personal preference, but I like staff who chat me up and give good vibes. The staff were fine, but not very engaging. Maybe I did something wrong... oh well.
Review 38:Cozy, warm fireplace. Two minutes walk from train station. Beautifully stocked and furnished. Great overall.
Review 39:My family LOVED this place! The whole hostel is very very clean and neat. The host was really helpful on everything. I have to say it was such a delight experience to live in Aso Base Backpackers. Definitely will come back again!
Review 40:when I check in I can feel the warmness of this hostel the decoration and surrounding make me feel like I stay over night at my friend's home. I'll choose this hostel again if I visit Aso mt.
Review 41:I don't know what Japanese are thinking. They give you heated seats for toilets, but they don't give you hot water to wash your face. Your butts won't be numb when you seat on a cold toilet, but your hands will when you have to brush teeth and wash face with cold water.
Review 42:price is a bit off the charts for a guest house, but you get a good value for the money.
Review 43:very good location extreamly friendly staff great lounge to chill after a long walk in the crater very cousy place
Review 44:The reception is closed for a large part of the day & you only have a small window of time to check in. The male cleaner was not very friendly! Good hostel for a couple but perhaps not so good for single travelers as rather quiet & the people didn't seem very sociable (although that could have just been when we stayed). Annoying that the shower is the type that you have to keep pressing rather than a constant flow. Nowhere to store clothes (no wardrobe or chest of drawers, just a few hangers on hooks)
Review 45:This hostel was beautifully clean, & appointed with everything you could possibly need. It was more like staying in a friend's very nice house than a hostel! The beds were extremely comfortable & the wifi was very good. Bathroom facilities were excellent & the place was all very homely, warm & comfortable
Review 46:Only thing was the dorm room didn't have a proper door, which meant sounds from next rooms can be heard. This generally is not a problem.
Review 47:The place had all the modern gears. The front desk person were very helpful. Being 3 min from Aso JR station really made things easy. Great kitchen. The bed was the largest dorm room bed in Japan for me.
Review 48:The whole place was so clean to the point I was scared to make any kind of mess, which is a good thing. The vibe was cozy, especially with the fireplace, music, and cute interior design. I loved the "osusume" guest book (book where travelers can write recommendations)! I cannot emphasize the cleanliness enough which really upped the experience.
Review 49:Very clean and comfortable guesthouse. The common space is huge, it's really feel like home! Staff helpful and guesthouse in front of the train and bus station
Review 50:- there are only hangings instead doors at the entrance of the rooms, but it wasn't a problem and also not noisy - Owners are professionell and answer your questions, but a little bit cautious and not so communicative especially to welcome you, it is this like: fill out the form and here are the rules. It influence a bit the atmosphere, guests were very much more restrained than in other hostels and there were at least during my stay no common conversations between themselves. - please note, that the reception isn't open some hours in the afternoon and after 8 p.m., so you should inform the guesthouse about arrival after 8.
Review 51:- Close to the Train Station, where also busses go to the vulcan area - very clean and very well organized hostel! - furnished individually and with great taste, especially the common areas, very rare in hostels - beds very comfortable - even maps to borrow for hiking tours, books and music, Mangas and so on - Supermarket around the corner
Review 52:This is the nicest hostel I have been in. The staff are very helpful. The common spaces, bathrooms, rooms, everything are in pristine conditions. There are cute pillows and stuffed animals you can borrow. Aso base has various lounge spots with very well done decor and comfy feeling. My friends and I were blown away by how lovely and cute this place was. I will certainly return!
Review 53:Surprisingly there were no towels provided in the private rooms. You had to rent one for (the small sum of) Y100.
Review 54:It was excellent, lots of polished wood and simply furnished, there was a good feel to the place. There were plenty of showers. toilets, washbasins, etc. The communal kitchen was very clean and well equiped. There was plenty of written info on surrounding sites, plus the manager was very helpful. Nearby convenience stores, supermarket and restaurants.
Review 55:The negative side is only that you only have a curtain instead of a door for the dormy rooms. Thus, it could not secure noise from outside the room at night, however, the hostel has a rule of 'keep it quiet'. So, this issue is mostly depend on other travellers..
Review 56:It is literally the best hostel I've been to by far! The place is very clean, neat, and has a nice atmosphere. The owner is nice to show around the place and give advice on restaurants nearby and other attractions. The location is perfect, took less than 5 mins from ASO train station and on the main road, can't get lost! There is also a Lawson open 24hrs close by.
Review 57:This should be the best youth hostel i have ever stayed. It makes you feeling that you are at home. the staff are really helpful and they can speak good English. The location is also very good with convenient shop, ramen shop nearby. Besides, the view from my double room is awesome and i can see Aso mountain directly.
Review 58:There wasn't anything that I did not like
Review 59:The manager was very efficient with everything in its place with clearly labelled instructions. He was also very helpful and informative. It was very clean and comfortable and a pleasure to spend time there.
Review 60:Zero
Review 61:Natural wood design, great kitchen and common area, 4 bed dorm nice and cosy. Close to station with good access to Kurokawa Onsen and Mt Aso hiking. Desk staff extremely helpful. Good maps.
Review 62:Probably the cleanest, most well fitted out hostel we've ever stayed in. We booked a double room which was very comfortable. Shared showers and toilets etc all of very high standard. Staff very helpful and knowledgeable. Would recommend to any travellers needing a bed in Aso. Aso Base is the standard for hostel accommodation.
Review 63:Totally nothing!
Review 64:A 10+! Aso Base Backpackers is a real unique hostel / guesthouse! The location is perfect, the hospitality and the facilities are amazingly good! And the owners do also know a lot of the hiking options in the area. And after a hike you get a nice discount on the onsen which is 3 minutes walk. The price of the onsen is, including discount around 330 yenn including a outsie part of the onsen which is great! Just an amazing place to stay!!
Review 65:This is an amazing Backpackers! Everything was perfect! The house is very new with great facilities like kitchen, common area, shower and bathroom. Everything was very clean. The staff was extremely friendly and polite. It felt really like a home away from home. We even rearranged our travel schedule so that we could spend an additional night in this Backpackers!
Review 66:the air conditioner will stop in the night, it was a little hot.
Review 67:The location is great, just near the Aso station, beside local market, lawson, gas station, coffee shop. The decoration is gorgeous, and the whole pension is very clean. People we met are kind, just like home.
