Reviews for Shiretoko Grand Hotel Kitakobushi

Review 1:Very few staff could speak English and it was rather difficult to communicate and find information. It would be helpful if they would have information in English about what to do in the area.

Review 2:Great ambiance and decor. The staff was extremely helpful. Breakfast and dinner buffets were superb in quality and presentation. Beautiful views from the hot spring baths

Review 3:We were initially given a small room with dated furnishing. We asked for an upgrade and only a smoking room in the main wing was available. It was larger but furnishing was also a bit dated.

Review 4:The hotel lobby was very nice and the buffet spread was very good and service was also excellent. The staff went all out to answer my many queries.

Review 5:The room was clean and comfortable, the bathroom was spacious and clean. The best value is the buffet dinner and breakfast; so many dishes of Japanese and Western cuisine, and all prepared to a high standard. One can hardly sample every dish offered! The serving staff was patient and courteous. Truly scrumptious and enjoyable experience.

Review 6:The pillow needs getting used to.

Review 7:Nice breakfast buffet. The onsen was very pleasant. It's very near all the sights of Utoro. But then Utoro is very small. Unfortunately we stayed only a night.

Review 8:Front desk speaks a little English, hotel should train staff to cater foreign guests. No complimentary transfers from Utoro Station to hotel, though is merely less than 5 mins walk but with a big luggage, is a real pain. Hope hotel can consider this feedback for improvement.

Review 9:buffet was unexpectedly good. Onsen is clean & well organised, hotel provided basket for guest to bring for onsen & locker in the onsen room. Thumbs up! Lobby is very comfortable- is really a 5 stars ambience!

Review 10:Maybe we booked by booking.com, rooms that we got mostly at the end of corridor. My friend booked an open-air bath room, the view shown on website can see seaviews. Actually the room that he got was not the same, the seaview.was blocked. A bit disappointed!

Review 11:The staff were polite/

Review 12:Nothing, it was that good!

Review 13:Buffet food selection was good and was re-fill when supply was low. Great location to explore Shiretoko. Staff was very patient and polite and greeted us. Onsen was great, loved it. Best of all was the room! Didn't wanna leave it as we booked the room with private bath.

Review 14:Staff lacking somehow the personal touch. Perhaps cos the hotel is so big

Review 15:We chose the triple Japanese/Western room facing the sea. It was beautiful. Spacious and tastefully designed. Breakfast and dinner were excellent. Such wide variety. Onsen was very nice.

Review 16:none.

Review 17:The variety of food that were provided during breakfast n lunch. The close proximity to most attractions. The friendliness of the staff. Overall it's a great hotel!

Review 18:Without the limited shuttle bus service, place is not near JR station, which makes it inaccessible.

Review 19:Good quality and spread of buffet breakfasts and dinners. Luxurious Japanese room in main building, has 2 sinks, separate room for dressing room, bath, toilet.

Review 20:This place is so far out, close to nature but driving there during winter is a risk because there is only one road leading to Shari during winter and road closures due to heavy snow can spoil your plans.

Review 21:Luxurious feel, free upgrade to very big sea-facing room (because it was snowstorm season and the hotel was basically deserted), nice but old bath

Review 22:Never expected to see nice hotel in remote area like Utoro. We stayed in Nishi - Kan west wing 3th floor japannese style room facing okhost sea with the gozila stone. We stayed here for 2 nights on 9- 10 dec. everywhere covered with snow. The town was very quiet. But you do not feel lonely if you stay at Kitakubochi. The staffs picked us up at the bus station even it was only 5 mins walk and you can find every things of shiretoko here such as drift ice , clione the beautiful animal . The hotel concerned a lot about local product , they have product demonstration and sell very good quality goods. We focus on onsen with a good view and please try to visit spa in front of onsen you will feel relax.I highly recommend this hotel if you have chance to visit Utoro.

Review 23:I liked that my room was big and roomy, especially since most Japanese hotel rooms are tiny! The shops at the hotels were wonderful they had a very good range of souvenirs.

Review 24:Our room turned out to be in the old building not facing the sea, but more than that, the room was very basic in its facilities and uncomfortable. Importantly, this was not obvious in the order The breakfast and dinner are in a huge noisy hall. Each time we asked from the polite waiters to sit us near the window there was a big fuss and discussions.

Review 25:Location! just on the shores of the sea of Okhotsk. The facilities of the hotel : lobby, nature stand, onsen, foot onsen (both facing the sea) were very pleasant. The selection of food for dinner but also for breakfast was satisfactory.

Review 26:Great view of lovely port from full size picture windows in large comfortable western style room with tatami mat. Helpful staff responded efficiently to inquiries on tours by email before arrival Huge and delicious buffet with both western and Japanese style food . Allergy relevant information clearly shown in picture format next to most choices - worth booking room with breakfast and dinner Yukata ( japanese robes) provided as in all ryokans to relax in hotel Close to Shiretoko National Park and 5 lakes walk English speaking staff member always available Two convenience stores close by - one next door and a 711 across the road Walking distance to bus terminus Wifi in all hotel including room Highly recommend the hotel

Review 33:No wifi connection in rooms

Review 34:Both indoor and outdoor onsen, buffet good

Review 35:The hotel is new and clean. I love the hot spring room with the panoramic views of the sea of Shiritoko.

Review 36:Too near boat jetty. Awakened in early 6 am by engine sounds. Try stay in west wing where it's quieter

Review 50:the receptionest is not so hospitality

Review 51:The sea view is really good.

Review 52:buffet spread was the same everyday.

Review 53:after travelling in Japan for a week, it is nice to have some real english speaking staff! Natsumi Tamagai went out of her way to make us feel welcomed and accomodate our requests:) Give that woman a beer!

Review 54:Stuffs are very warm and tend to help, but still may improve English, asstill had some difficulty while communicate! When we checked out andplanned to take bus to Shari jr station, the bus coming but with a signheading for airport, while we double cfmed with the girl, asking ifit's the bus to jr station, we just cann't understand each otherproperly that caused us almost miss the bus! Thankfully they clarifiedthe bus will stop at the jr station before go airport, so we finallycaught it! Another point is while we did not book buffet dinner at hoteland planned to have some nice dinner of local famous sea food, it'sof very rare choice, girls at front desk were very helpful to call somelocal place and even drove us there, but really very small restaurant ofnot too much choice, hope they may prepare more info on this for thosenone-group guest, or maybe develop their own restrurant inside thehotel, so may have more choice besides the buffet!

Review 55:Very expensive for the kind of facilities provided. Onsen is just so-so, not worth the money.

Review 56:The hotel appointed a English speaking staff to take care of us.

Review 57:Japanese has still a long way to go in delighting customers and exceeding their expectation. They are v rigid and inflexible wen it comes to customer requests. Their first response is NO or they don't understand your request. Service recovery is not in their vocabulary. Let me share w u am experience. The hotel staff insisted that they must valet parked my car for me. While I waited for 20 min and no news of the hotel driver I was told later that something happened toy car. I went to take a look and I was the front under carriage dropped off from the car right at the car park. The hotel claimed that it just broke into twos. They disclaimed any responsibility. The car was in good condition when it was handed over to them. And they did nothing to compensate. I told them the least they could do is to pay for the excess of my insurance policy. They would not even offer any good gesture for the damage they did to my car. At the end we had to pay for everything ourselves. There were many scratch marks on the steep slopes leading to the car park. Guess we were not the only victim. Too bad. Had it been in any other countries there will some form of service recovery done . Don't expect it in Japan. They are polite and say thank you but they don't say sorry that readily.

Review 58:Nice and v comfy hotel. Nice meals in the hotel. There are staff who can understand and speak English.

Review 59:Nothing!

Review 60:The hotel has excellent public and private onsen. Food was great and staff very helpful and friendly. It was s bit on the expensive side but then we paid for quality. From the moment we drove to the hotel driveway to checking out, the service provided was par excellent! We left behind a blazer and some clothings when we checked out and the staff arranged for them to be shipped to our next hotel. I didn't expect to see my favourite blazer again so it was a nice surprise!
