Reviews for HOTEL UNIZO Kyoto Shijo Karasuma
Review 1:The location is not bad, but I wish the hotel is closer to subway. A lot of walking between hotel, subway, and shopping area. No breakfast served at the hotel. I love Japanese breakfast buffet, so this is a bummer. There is a local Japanese diner across the street, not a buffet. I ate there three times, food is OK.
Review 2:The hotel is remodeled recently. The amenities are comparable to a 5-star hotel. Bath tub is excellent. Good value for the money. I really enjoyed my stay for 5 nights. Highly recommended.
Review 3:- The hotel staff couldn't speak English well, it was hard to communicate. - Rooms were very compact, but I guess that's the general thing with Japan.
Review 4:- Location was excellent, very close to main spots.
Review 5:Took us a bit to work out the aircon as we do not speak Japanese, maybe an English card handed out to English speaking people.
Review 6:Loved the location. Plenty to do around that area and close to transport. Loved the free water everyday.
Review 7:The room is so small. No CNN :-( It is important to international guests.
Review 8:Fast WIFI. Staffs very friendly, except the taller girl as she was not so patient in answering our questions.
Review 9:The room was very nice and quiet, but when i check in the room what i find some limescale in the kettle.
Review 10:The staff were friendly. I liked the location for me since I was doing most of my visiting in Kyoto city centre.
Review 11:Room a little small but big enough for on person, city view from window both are no problem when your sleeping
Review 12:Very nice room, good badroom, clean and tidy, friendly staff, good city center location
Review 13:On the first day, the bathroom smells really bad.
Review 14:The location is good to look around the city and Arashiyama. There is a supermarket right across the street, which was very convenienet.
Review 15:The room was very clean and tidy. It was compact but we knew this when making the booking. Also a good location in Kyoto, with access to points of interest within walking distance. Also excellent wifi available in the room.
Review 16:A lack of storage space and not unexpectedly, a small room.
Review 17:Hotel was very clean. Our room was fabulously quiet - situated on the back of the hotel (we requested a quiet room). Very helpful, pleasant English-speaking staff on reception.
Review 18:Excellent location - 15 minute walk to Gion area, train/subway station only a few minutes walk away, and plenty of city buses stop right out the front of hotel to take you to all the major Kyoto sites and attractions. Lots of restaurants, convenience stores, shops, etc, only a few steps away from hotel. Both room and bathroom were spotlessly clean, comfortable and modern. Reasonably small, but not overly cramped when comparing with the usual (small) Japanese hotel room standards/sizes. Staff were helpful, friendly and efficient. Fluent in multiple languages. No issues with my stay whatsoever. Very happy with the price I paid in relation to what was received. Would definitely recommend this hotel to others as a great base to explore Kyoto.
Review 19:Very good location as train station is only a few hundreds meters away and the bus stop a few step from the hotel entrance. Also if you like shopping, the location is right at the shijo dori shopping street. Ladies only floor at the top is also cute with the private lounge for ladies to hang out.
Review 20:About 3 blocks from train station with plenty of good restaurants near by be it local food or 711/Starbucks and local small grocers with fresh fruits etc. Safe location but not a big evening scene within walking distance. Typical Japan room (meaning luggage should only be carry on) but well organized & good wifi etc
Review 21:The room was amazing and comfortable, it was small but has many functions that were very well thought out for a female traveller. The staff were very professional and helpful as well.
Review 22:Functional building... no view, but location is great.
Review 23:Great location, small but very comfortable, clean, modern rooms & facilities. Free wi-fi throughout.
Review 24:We didn't like so much the size of the room and bed - we booked a double bedroom and had just enough space to open the suitcase when needed. Because the room was so small, it got quite hot at night. This can be dealt with by using the aircon, which we don't like, however.
Review 25:We liked the location as the bus stop is right in front of the hotel and the metro stop only 2 minutes away. It is two stops to Kyoto Station, from where one can get anywhere. The hotel, room and bathroom were always very clean. The staff was helpful and friendly.
Review 26:The only negative would be that the room is a bit cramped - it had furniture that cluttered the room and made it hard to manoeuvre.
Review 27:A short taxi ride from Kyoto station and in the middle of the Shijo Dori shopping district. Follow the street down the end to visit the famous Gion district! Clean and comfortable room and helpful staff.
Review 28:Room very small, difficult to manage 2 big luggages. Bed not very confortable.
Review 29:Hotel nice, modern and clean. Helpfull staff. Facilities (laudry). Bus stop in front of the hotel.
Review 30:No closet for clothes. No view from my room. The 10-floor ladies lounge is not accessible to female guests staying on other floors.
Review 31:It's a new hotel so the physical facilities are new and nice. The bathroom facility is good. The hotel is located next to a 24-hour eatery which offers cheap Japanese food.
Review 32:Rooms are small, compared with price.
Review 33:1. Nice area : located btw Shizo station and Omiya station, it's easy to gp to either arashiyama or kiyomizuzera, ginkakuzi area and Uji. 2. Staffs are nice, speak good English 3. I chose ladies' room, which was safe, nice, and which also had a separate laundromaut in the floor.
Review 34:The bathroom always smelled like it had been cleaned with an old rag, or used rag that gave the bathroom a very distinct and unappealing odour.
Review 35:The location was amazing, and the property was clean and modern.
Review 36:Provide more Travel information leaflet in lift lobby in different language, eg English & Chinese.
Review 37:Location of hotel is convenient. Staff are sincere and helpful.
Review 38:Second time staying here and it was just as good as the first time. The rooms are so cozy and aesthetically pleasing that it makes it easy to relax and sleep. The bathrooms are excellent. The best I've used in Japan (or anywhere). The washing machines are extremely helpful to the long term traveler.
Review 39:Fluffy towels, comfortable beds, jugs of cold water to take to your room at night, location (30 min walk from Kyoto station or 3 mins to nearest subway), good local bars/restaurants nearby.
Review 40:I adored this hotel. The staff were very helpful. My room was small but the design was aesthetically pleasing and a perfect use of space. It was so cozy I didn't want to leave. Good location by Shijo subway station. Laundry facilities a plus.
Review 41:The hotel is clean, location was considered fairly good with walkable distance to the subway. Were some good restaurant around the hotel. Amenities were nearby and very convenient.
Review 42:Small room, small sink. No breakfast included (there's Tully's just next to the entrance, but the choice is limited).
Review 43:Clean, modern, helpful staff. Large bathtub. Bus and metro stops near by.
Review 44:Location was excellent, very convenient for getting all over Kyoto, especially with the bus stop right outside the entrance and the subway just a 5/10 min walk. So close to Gion which was great. Excellent area with lots of shops and restaurants close by. Room was small but cozy, was fine for me as a solo traveller.
Review 45:The room was a little noisy because a busy street and a busy bus stop were right beneath the window of my room.
Review 46:Laundry Service was friendly and inexpensive.
Review 47:The rooms were very small, but we expected that.
Review 48:The hotel was well located and easy to access by several busses. We slept very well, the rooms were quiet and the beds were comfortable. It had everything we needed.
Review 49:Quite small room but with modern facilities. Situated on Shijo Dori, with bus stop out front and a short walk to subway. Taxi to Shinkasen only Y1100.
Review 50:No
Review 51:They have the ladies floor for solo female traveler, which is really nice. The location of hotel is very convenience for visiting Kyoto. Closed to the subway station.
Review 52:Rooms are a bit small but its okay by Japan standards.
Review 53:The front desk staff was co-ordial and very very friendly in general and kept our bags for extra time. She was prompt in helping us with directions around the city and printed out maps for us without asking. Good for tourists
Review 54:This hotel has a reasonable price for the newly remodeled rooms and great location. Very close to subway, bus stops, and shopping area. We stayed here for 4 nights and throughly enjoyed our stay. Staff was kind and helpful.
Review 55:On our last morning, the lifts stopped working and emergency sirens started. The emergency exits were locked. All the announcements were in Japanese. I had no way of understanding what was going on, or leaving the building. It turned out to be a false alarm, but I had no way of knowing that. A dangerous situation.
Review 56:Well-equipped room and bathroom. Access to transport - bus to Kyoto station is just outside, and there are other buses close by.
Review 57:- Room is a bit small but ok
Review 58:- Friendly staff with good English - Excellent location nearby subway station and bus stop right outside of the hotel. 10 mins walk to downtown. - Clean and quiet room
Review 59:hotel could need to develop more facilities like bike rental, breakfast, airport pick up... those are available near the hotel but it would be a plus
Review 60:location is great. rooms are small but well equipped and super clean
Review 61:Only 300m from Shijo Station and very large shopping area. Shijo Station can be easily reached by underground railway from Kyoto main station. Hotel is new and very comfortable.
Review 62:Rooms are tiny. At check in we were asked to pay for our entire stay( 3 rooms for 3nights). They could not read our credit card so we were sent to a money change office a few blocks away. We were told to leave our luggage as a "deposit". Since we could not change the whole amount, after long discussions we were finally given our room key.
Review 63:Good location on main street. Easy acess to bus and metro stations
Review 64:The service and the location of the hotel is perfect! Easy walking distance to and from subway and central part of Kyoto, many restaurants and shops in the area, the room was clean and the personnel is very friendly, they speak fluent english. We reccomend it!
Review 65:The room was equipped with everything you could need, also a multiple adaptor to charge your Android or Apple device. The location is good. Very close to the tube station and just 15 minutes walking from the central station or the gyon "night" borough.
Review 66:I was on the women's floor, and there was a lounge with free coffee you make yourself and a washing machine. It was a good place to meet young Japanese women and talk about their lives and interests.
Review 67:They didn't have breakfast option in the hotel but there were many places around. The room was small but this is normal in Japan
Review 68:The attention from the staff and good location, very closed to metro station, bus and many restaurants. We would definitely stay there again if we come back to Kyoto
Review 69:No TV channel with English language, quilt supplied a bit warm for season.
Review 70:Small room but had view onto Main Street yet totally noise free. Clean and well equipped
Review 71:Room is rather small.. But we somehow managed to get in 2 rather large suitcases without breaking anything.
Review 72:Close to a train station, has a few 7-11 nearby, staff is friendly. Although the room is small, the bathroom is very spacious. Within walking distance to different sites, bars, restaurants etc'
Review 73:The bathroom was rather cramped, and the dryers on the first floor took a long time to dry your clothes. Luckily there was a clothesline in the bathroom. These were small inconveniences; nothing that would make me not recommend this place.
Review 74:The location of the hotel was great. A bus stop was right near the hotel, in addition to numerous restaurants and shopping within walking distance. The staff was very helpful. Tully's cafe is connected to the hotel so there was no need to travel far in the morning for a bite to eat.
Review 75:there is an ice machine, but nothing but a small cup to put the ice in, an ice bucket would be great.
Review 76:very clean, great location, plenty of room, soft beds and good size too. if you leave through the old exit, you are in the middle of old japan, the front exit takes you to a coffee shop and access to downtown. Subway is only one block away.
Review 77:Wrong information on the website regarding the hotel location made me walk around kyoto with my bags for hours. The staff were not nice towards the guests
Review 78:Location of the hotel was great.
Review 79:very good location, bus no. 26 right outside front door for connecting everywhere in the City.. very convenient. Also 24hr stores 2 mins away from hotel
Review 80:I could not understand how to use the air conditioner.
Review 81:I stayed in 4 hotels during my holiday 3 of those in Kyoto, Unizo was absolutely the best hotel in every aspect. The limousine bus pick up is right across the road and Tully's Cafe has the best coffee in Japan.
Review 82:Not much wrong - it was a bit small, but most hotel rooms are in Japan, and there was a bit of a nasty smell in the bathroom.
Review 83:Teh hotel is located on the main shopping street in central Kyoto, and opposite a convenient bus station.
Review 84:Centrally located, comfortable room for a reasonable price, washing machines available, lots of restaurants in the neighborhood, well working wifi. I appreciate the eco-friendly policy.
Review 85:Slow internet connection
Review 86:Friendly staff, washing machine at the ground floor makes a huge difference when you are on the road for long time, internet connection is very slow. Coffee shop is very hand
Review 87:Rooms are small, but that is normal for Japan.
Review 88:The Hotel is very new and very nice, located right in the heart of Kyoto near the Karasuma subway line and right next to a Major bus stop. Location is great, staff are very helpful and kind, hotel rooms are small but very well designed. Stayed for 6 nights and was very happy with it.
Review 89:Overpriced. Must be to do with location (at end of high-end shopping street) Also be aware that it is Shijo station you need (exit 23 is closest)
Review 90:Comfortable room if compact. Helpful staff.
Review 91:Room small but had everything needed
Review 92:Good location: two stops on metro from main rail station and bus stop approx. 20 m down street. Excellent location for all sights (or transport to)
Review 93:Expensive!
Review 94:Great room which was very clean, great location for public transport to nearby sights. Very helpful staff who spoke English. Felt very safe on a ladies only floor!
Review 95:The small room was crowded with a trouser press and a small table which we didn't feel was necessary.
Review 96:The staff at Unizo was very friendly. We loved our room, especially the beautiful bathroom. The hotel was just a short walk from the subway station.
Review 97:Hotel is not 10 minutes walk from Kyoto Station as the description says. Room was very small and given the size of the room, furniture was excesive. Water stream from the sink was pretty weak. Staff in the reception gave us wrong directions to a restaurant.
Review 98:The bed was a bit small (like in almost all japanese hotels), the room was full of unnecessary staff (a small table, a ¿portable ac?, etc.) which occuped a lot of space. The staff english level should be improved.
Review 99:Convinient location, very clean, comfortable bed. Very nice bathro.
Review 100:Room small (but it is Japan) but had everything needed
Review 101:Location: close to subway (and only 2 stops on subway to main rail station) and bus stop (makes sightseeing very easy!)
Review 102:Rooms were hot initially but staff were able to adjust from the central air conditioning control.
Review 103:Convenient location, well equipped (but small) rooms.
Review 104:Staff was nice recommending where I could have late dinner that night. How ever, when I asked if he could reserve table at one restaurant for me since reservation could be done only through hotel, he refused to do so.
Review 105:Hotel room is new and clean. Lobby is good with calm atmosphere. It's not crowded and loud like some other hotel.
Review 106:No room service and coffee shop opens at 7am. TV had a few Japanese only stations but we didn't go there to watch TV.
Review 107:The rooms are very compact but logically designed. Great stuff like slippers and drip coffee packets (only 2). Quiet and good AC which is adjustable. Public transportation nearby.
Review 108:Although reasonable for Japan, the rooms are quite small. Some rooms look directly onto adjacent building.
Review 109:Central location, good value. Some nice elements of design.
Review 110:The wifi wasn't very strong so even though the hotel had free wifi it was off and on the whole time.
Review 111:The location ,the cleanliness as well as how modern the hotel was....
Review 112:Good location and great value for money. Receptionist spoke good English but did not necessarily provide good directions to main attractions such as the Nijo-jo correctly. Otherwise, the stay was very pleasant and will definitely recommend to others.
Review 113:Bed was so very hard! Please consider adding softer mattress padding or replacing beds - it was like sleeping on plywood.
Review 114:Location! Could not be in a better place for the Gion Matsuri festival parade route. Where ever we walked from the hotel we saw parade floats. Staff was extremely helpful interpreting for us and helping secure Sumo tickets in Nagoya.
Review 115:room was well equipped but small
Review 116:i stayed on the ladies floor... it had a lovely ladies lounge where i could chill out with coffee and blanket provided whilst i did my laundry... loved the rose bath salts too!
Review 117:Our remote for the automated toilet didn't work the first night, there weren't enough coffee cream sachets in the ladies lounge and most importantly, the toilet stunk of urine the second night we stayed there.
Review 118:The ladies floor and ladies lounge on 10th floor. Some of the staff were great but mostly they were not helpful. We appreciated the 2 bottles of water daily.
Review 119:1/ I never received any notice from Booking.com or Hotel about the road will be blocked for the event at the night time. When I drove there, i cannot reach the hotel directly. I have to parked n move my luggage so by walk over 10 minutes. This is so ridiculous for this experience. 2/ cannot access the wifi in room 3/ the room is really small, and the bedding is so small too. 4/ the people at front desk are not good in English, difficulty for communication
Review 120:Convenience in place, and the hotel is quite new
Review 121:- Hotel only provide 1 pillow per guest and the pillow is flat and not comfortable. Need to request from housekeeping for additional pillow if required - The double bed room is really small for 2 person. There's hardly any walking area after loading in luggage for 2 person.
Review 122:- Walking back to hotel from the city central is pretty far. However the bus stop which is right outside hotel which makes up for the location. Convenient for tourist who purchased the 1day unlimited bus pass. - Room is very clean. - Family mart nearby and a Tully cafe just at hotel entrance. There are some japanese eateries located around the hotel too.
Review 123:smaller room than hotel my-stays, pricier probably because I booked a day before, view blocked by adjacent building because buildings around it are higher
Review 124:quiet room, good location, clean room, gave extra pillows when requested
Review 125:Room is pretty clean. However, if the room is for two person, that room is absolutely too small.
Review 126:The floor is ladies only floor, good for girls travel alone to Kyoto.
Review 127:The hotel is very clean and new. It's located within 10 minutes walking distance to the subway. There are several bus stops right outside the hotel to major locations and getting a cab is pretty easy as well so travelling around Kyoto is very comfortable.
Review 128:I stayed on the ladies floor and they had so many little details that made my stay that much more comfortable - scented oils, nail polishes and tea in the lounge made this hotel very memorable
