Reviews for Hotel Sunline Kyoto Gion Shijo

Review 1:- large comfortable rooms (larger than they appear in the image) - attentive staff - good location and attractions are easily accessible from bus stop close by

Review 2:Outstanding staff! Our rental car broke down and the hotel staff took care of getting us a quick, free replacement so we could continue our Sightseeingtour. Never seen such dedication to customer care before! Also great location and breakfast.

Review 3:The hotel sent a email reminder a week or two before our stay and was asked to reply to confirm. Which we did. Then there was a second email asking to confirm again a week before the stay. It was just a little annoying.

Review 4:It is right in GION, so very convenient to visit all the main shrine attractions. We even did a couple of morning jogs through the gardens etc. Very good location, and still quiet enough.

Review 5:Excellent location in Gion. we had a family room with 4 beds which was actually quite spacious and big enough for us all. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Review 6:Loved this hotel! No complaints!

Review 7:Ideal location for the Gion area with all the great foods and restaurants! Also walking distance to many shrines and temples!

Review 8:A very good location for seeing a lot of Kyoto when you only have a couple days. The hotel overlooks a busy street, however the sound-proofing was excellent, the room was quiet.

Review 9:The location for the hotel is perfect. We walked to several famous places of interest within 10 to 20 minutes. It saved the trouble of waiting for public buses or taking taxi. The room was very clean and the beds were comfortable. The staff of the reception helped us to book a restaurant and provided us with detailed direction.

Review 10:The hotel is in dire need of a facelift. Room looks (and smells) old and tired. Chipping paint on the bathroom. Breakfast was really subpar. Bad value for money.

Review 11:Good location, in the heart of Gion.

Review 12:Nothing

Review 13:Booked twin room wz 2 extra bed, we got a big room wz 2 qeen bed wz 2 extra bed which was a surprise for us. Bath room is very big wz a big bath tub. Location very good. Bus stop is just outside hotel n have many shops down the street. Staff are friendly and helpful and speak fluent English.

Review 14:Like the buffet breakfast. But it will be good if there is a change of variety each day. Stayed for 6 days and the food do get boring.

Review 15:Excellent location. Close to many famous shrines. And restaurants and shopping are aplenty, all within walking distance.

Review 16:Price is high, but they all are in that area and this is by far the best option.

Review 17:Location Location Location! Massive rooms for Japan. Amazing friendly helpful staff - by far the best option in the area.

Review 18:Superb location right next to many of the places we wanted to visit - and well placed for early morning visits to those places before breakfast as the sun comes up and when hardly anyone else is about. Comfortable room and helpful staff. We would stay again.

Review 19:Staff is not trained well. They should follow Japanese law which does not require ID from foreign permanent residents. They treated me in a prejudicial way.

Review 20:So so location, good price, large clean rooms and good rates.

Review 21:I'm anti corporate American manufacturers that have manipulated the worlds water sources. The Nescafé coffee shop in the hotel represents Nestle corporation.

Review 22:The professional front desk staff was welcoming , helpful, informative and always available to assist. The hotel was clean. Housekeepers did a wonderful job; were excellent and friendly.

Review 23:Room had no drawers for clothing. Uncomfortable and run-down futon type "sofa". Cheap desk chair. Photos on website were misleading. And this after paying for a room upgrade!

Review 24:1. Location. 2. Location 3. Fine breakfast 4. Large comfortable beds (after upgrade).

Review 25:The location is really good. Near the best part of Kyoto. Interesting to meet real geisha in the evenings. Staff very friendly. Room comfortable and clean. Enjoyed the nice Breakfast buffet.

Review 26:Liked everything. Would definitely go back again.

Review 27:Very convenient location. Extremely belpful staff. Our room was spacious & quiet. Good breakfasts- both Japanese & Western- though basement dining room lacked atmosphere.

Review 28:Wished it wasn't quite so crowded everywhere.

Review 29:I think the location is probably usually really good - so close to lots of temples gardens etc - we happened to be staying during silver week and the crowds were overwhelming every time we walked out of the door.

Review 30:None

Review 31:Great location, next to Yasada shrine with bus stop just right in front of hotel. Buses 206 and 100 connect to Kyoto station. It serves good Japanese breakfast. Staff are very polite and friendly.

Review 32:The staff was very friendly. The room was a standard Western style hotel room that was clean and comfortable. The shower is huge. It's waking distance from many sights.

Review 33:Very friendly staff! Gave good recommendations from a local's point of view. Big room and bathroom Fast wifi Clean Great location - near Yasaka Shrine, Lawson convenience store, etc

Review 34:500$ for one night is simply a rip-off for what you get here! room doors don't even close automatically, wireless didn't work properly and the reception staff would refuse to make a dinner reservation for us!

Review 35:location is good

Review 36:The room was clean but a bit aged (e.g. wear marks on door frames), which makes it feel a bit too expensive compared to other similarly priced hotels I've stayed at in Japan.

Review 37:Great location, clean room, high quality breakfast. Large bathroom.

Review 38:A bit pricey The breakfast was way too expensive The wifi kept cutting off and at times it was unobtainable

Review 39:Large room Comfortable beds Efficient air-conditioning Helpful, frienldy staff Well positioned

Review 40:The non-smoking room we had still smells of smoke. The staff, although friendly, was not able to help with information such as where to exchange money, or how to make a restaurant reservation

Review 41:Location

Review 42:For the price I would expect (in a double room) to have a bit better equipped rooms, a night table in each side of the bed, a lamp is not to ask much, for example. Also the size of the room in this price category is not really "generous"... Worse of all is that the windows let all the noise from the street in the room, buy earplugs!

Review 43:Great location, a lot of interesting places easily reachable in a few minutes walk.

Review 44:The only thing that I wish they can add is the laundry facility. Have to walk 5 minutes a few times at night to a totally empty place (no people will be there to help) to do laundry is not that fun since all instructions are mainly in Japanese.

Review 45:Love the location and the huge bathroom. Staff's English is not great, but acceptable. They did try their best to help.

Review 46:Somewhat difficult to find inexpensive places to eat nearby.

Review 47:Very kind and helpful staff. Location near Kiyomuzu Temple was great. Breakfast was outstanding!

Review 48:The music in the hallways, geeze!

Review 49:A pleasant and exceedingly comfortable hotel. Perfect location. The staff were exceptionally friendly, and very helpful. I really like it that when I spoke to them in my very poor Japanese (practising) they responded in simple Japanese rather than immediately switching to English.

Review 50:The hotel is a little tired although very clean. It had all amenities and the staff were very helpful.

Review 51:The hotel location was very close to the main shopping area and the subway and bus stops were close by.

Review 52:far from the main train station (20 min bus ride), despite booking non smoking room the one we've got was smelling bad, way overpriced compared to higher standard hotels in Kyoto, we travelled with small children who shared the bed wit us which didn't stop the hotel to charge additionally (other higher standard hotels in Kyoto did not charge additional money for the children),

Review 53:good location for Gion visitors but far from train station if you want to use Kyoto as a hub for futher travels,

Review 54:The staff was extremely helpful. The breakfast was extensive and meant that we didn't have to stop for lunch til later in the afternoon. The location was perfect for wandering the back streets up the hill to Kiyomizu temple as well as the Gion area.

Review 55:We loved the room. It was large and roomy. (207). The shower and bathtub were great. Perfect location to set out on adventures. The English-speaking staff were lovely. The attached cafe had good food.

Review 56:It's the first time I've had a hotel ask to charge extra for another set of towels. And they charge per person.

Review 57:Staff was helpful and accommodating. The rooms were clean, and location is Gion area is quite good.

Review 58:Only problem and major issue for us was that the hotel policy is that they cannot assist you in making restaurant recommendations. Many of the restaurants in Kyoto do not speak English, and I had to use my rusty and incompetent level in Japanese to struggle to attempt to make a reservation. Ultimately, I was unable to successfully make a reservation myself, and by the time I found someone to make the call it was an hour later. I understand it's not the fault of the staff, but the hotel policy. I wish they would change it. As locals, it shows a lack of hospitality.

Review 59:Location is quite good, and near a bus stop. We had a comfortable stay. Must especially commend the ladies that helped us during check-out and organized luggage delivery service.

Review 60:The beds are the most uncomfortable I have slept on anywhere in the world. The ryokan we stayed at had more comfortable mats on the floor !! We had booked here for a week and by the end I was exhausted.I asked for another sheet as there is no top sheet on the bed and that took 2 staff to understand what I wanted. The room was fairly large but bathroom was small and in need of some repairs. No view from the window ( room 208)as its just opaque glass. Coffee in the room but no sugar, milk or teaspoons and it was hit and miss if I got these even after asking.Had breakfast one day and that was enough. Stay for a couple of days just for the location but if you are staying longer I would find a better hotel.

Review 61:Location.

Review 62:Dining staff not very good...we had to wait 15-20 minutes for them to cook more white rice which had run out during breakfast. Also, they did not notice that the miso soup had also run out so they did not refill the empty pot. Taxis don't know where this property is located.

Review 63:Location....near main streets. Friendly and helpful front desk. Some speak English. Large bath/shower area.

Review 64:Breakfast buffet was quite boring and located in a room in the basement. We only ate there once. The remaining days we prefered to go out for breakfast.

Review 65:Hotel is very good located, walking distance to several sights and avery nice part of the city. The staff was extremely kind and helpful, and the room was large and clean. I would highly recommend this hotel!

Review 66:Plenty of opportunities to trip on different levels within the room(s). While everything was absolutely fine, I found the location was the only thing to justify the price.

Review 67:Location, location, location.

Review 68:Helpful friendly informative staff who gave us bus and train information and great directions for getting everywhere including the closest laundromat. Comfortable rooms, extra good breakfasts.

Review 69:Very spacious for Japan standards. Had a beautiful bathroom with a huge bath tub. We took a quadruple but they gave us two queen size and 2 single bed so we all had one each for ourselves. The bus stop is in front of the hotel which connects to all the sight seeing places. We bought the day pass for Yen 500 and covered all places through bus.

Review 70:The unpleasant smell of dampness in our otherwise very clean room. We just couldn't get rid of it.

Review 71:Extremely kind staff, even for the very high Japanese standards, spacious room, professionalism, reasonable price, convenient location for nightlife and for the buses taking you to the Kyoto Station or the most important sights of the city.

Review 72:The taxi driver did not know where the hotel was. That is the fault of the taxi driver but even for visitors checking in online - "near Yasaka Jinja" would be helpful.

Review 73:See above.

Review 74:The pillows in the hotel were a little hard for western tastes I think. I like a firm pillow but found them uncomfortable. Really minor detail because it's the only thing I can criticise. Loved the hotel.

Review 75:Our twin double bedded room had stunning views of the countryside surrounding Kyoto. The hotel was spotlessy clean and staff were really helpful and friendly.

Review 76:Japan offers still smoking rooms, far too expensive for what you get, (5* rates for 3* hotel)

Review 77:Friendly and helpful staff, perfect location for sightseeing, ok breakfast

Review 78:Staff Asked repeatedly to pay charges because we bring kids, although we had paid they again make a phone call asking me to the reception to pay. They Said for amenities the kids need but things they gave were shaver, others without childish, all for adult

Review 79:The hotel was fine but very expensive for what it was. I guess we were paying a premium for location and the time of year as Kyoto was full.

Review 80:Location was good as a base for walking around central Kyoto and the Gion district. we had a room on the side of the building so it was fairly quiet.

Review 81:Please note they don't make reservations to any restaurant! This is crazy as all better restaurants in Kyoto needs reservation. Never again.

Review 82:Location is perfect, facilities and comfort very good.

Review 83:when staying in winter room was a little cold

Review 84:it was our 2nd stay in Sunline, and we couldn't be more satisfied - location is great, staff is helpful, breakfast yummy and rooms big and comfy. Highly recommended!

Review 85:We liked our spacious room for 3 adults. The bed was so big! We even used two, without using an additional bed. Great location in old Kyoto. Nice breakfast where you can find a lot of food.

Review 86:The hotel does not have a concierge service which means you cannot get help with reservations etc.

Review 87:The Sunline is a nice comfortable hotel. the breakfast (not included in the room price) is very good.

Review 88:I probably wouldn't have minded a slightly softer bed but it was ok. No complaints at all.

Review 89:I enjoyed every moment staying at Sunline and I told the staff I would stay there again next time. They said, "We're waiting for you".

Review 90:5-star breakfast, very good wifi, super close to the tourist sites: 1 minute to yasaka shrine, 4 mins to hanamikoji, 10 mins to ninenzaka / kiyomizu temple, 10 mins to the subway kyoto-osaka

Review 91:Location was amazing. Within walking distance to so many sites. The staff was so helpful and incredibly nice. I would absolutely go to Kyoto and stay here again. It was an awesome experience!!

Review 92:If you plan to use kyoto as a base to travel the region, might be better to stay near kyoto station. The hotel also has a policy of not helping with restaurant reservations which can be quite inconvenient given the language barrier.

Review 93:Location at the corner of Gion beside Yasaka shrine. Near kiyomizu-dera temple. Nice walk to teramachi/nishiki. Lots of good snack shops and food nearby. We made a last minute change to the itinerary and wanted to depart few days earlier. The hotel was very accommodating and only charged us for the nights stayed. The staff were helpful and smiley.

Review 94:Nothing at all.

Review 95:Perfect location in every way, right smack in Gion and just 2 mins walk to Yasaka shrine. Nice and comfortable spacious room. Love the unique bathroom, with not only a big sparkling clean bathtub but an extra area to shower and fixed with a conveniently low tap. Best service of all the hotels we have stayed in our 3 Kyoto/Osaka trips since 2012. The entire team of staff at the reception are friendly and helpful, and always with a smile. Will definitely choose to stay at Sunline when we come back to Kyoto.

Review 96:Make sure you book a parking spot well in advance (although they don't have an email address on their website). You will therefore need to ring. We nearly got stung with having to pay $800 in parking in a local carpark. I did ring and book a carpark ahead however they misunderstood what I was asking. We arrived and had not carpark.

Review 97:I still need to adapt with the key lock of the room. We need to lock it manually either we're in/out the room. I think this should be improved by the hotel to make customer more secure.

Review 98:Overall I'm so happy to stay in Sunline. I like the staff, most. They're really friendly and helpful with foreigner.

Review 99:Their breakfast spread was good but the ambiance and setting of the breakfast room looked like a store room or warehouse. A little decoration,a little rearrangement of furniture and a bit of an accent would definitely make a big difference.

Review 100:We loved everything from the very courteous and helpful staff, good location, big clean rooms, huge bathrooms and very reasonable rates.

Review 101:The staff were lovely. They knew it was our honeymoon and upgraded our room to one with a huge bed and very spacious bathroom with separate bath/shower room. The breakfast was AMAZING, the best buffet I've seen in any hotel. The room was great - spacious, comfortable and clean. The hotel location is fantastic - a minute walk to the main street on Gion and the train station. We highly recommend this hotel and will be staying here next time we visit Kyoto.

Review 102:A snap down from The Tokyo Shibuya Dormy Inn - no Onsen, did the job. Breakfast a bit boring. Wish a consultant could explain what an English breakfast is exactly.

Review 103:Excellent location for Gion, very friendly staff, rooms are good size. Japanese breakfast not too bad.

Review 104:A bit far from the train station, but close to the bus station. Just the pillow that was not comfortable and toilet is a bit cold in the winter. But the room was warm and big.

Review 105:The room was quite big for Japan, the location is great, close to gion traditional district, many restaurants and some temples. The breakfast was really good with some western options.

Review 106:They dont offer breakfast, but have a nice and fully equipped kitchen to cook your own food. There is a 24hs mini market nearby.

Review 107:Great location, quiet but at the same time close to the traditional district, bus station and some temples. The room was very clean, big and warm (it was really frezeen outside) we stayed in the family room with traditional beds but still confortable and had a beatiful garden view.

Review 108:In Japan, a country known for its fabulous baths you'd think they would provide for enough hot water to fill the tub. Brrrrrr. And the tub caulking was old and flaking. The shampoos and other items were sparse. Their was a note that if you needed additional items, like an iron, there may be an additional fee, that there were a limited number available. Lovely hotel but not luxurious.

Review 109:Could not beat the location, Japanese style bfast was exceptional, and the view from my room, perfect.

Review 110:Unfortunately, the hotel staff were not able to help with restaurant reservations.

Review 111:Just a few minutes away from the Gion area and beside Yasaka Shrine. Central, yet quiet even though we were on the second floor. The hotel staff were generally helpful and even helped with another hotel cancellation.

Review 112:The location of the hotel is superb. It is right beside the Yasaka Shrine and close to gion. If walk for about 10-15 minute there is a lots of shopping malls as well. Furthermore you can take buses for a your to Ginkakuji route or another bus to Kinkakuji and the bus stop is only 1 minute away. The room is very large, compare to other japanese room and the bathroom is very nice. In total a great hotel with excellent location and affordable price. Strongly recommend if you are staying in Kyoto.

Review 113:Unable to get lighter bedding, like a light blanket to put inside duvet cover instead of winter weight duvet. Hence overheated every night despite turning air conditioner to lowest setting of 17 degrees ( which actually wasn't cooling to that level). Was advised to open window as well which we did.

Review 114:Staff wonderfully friendly and helpful. Fantastic position in Gion. Bed comfortable, large rooms with separate bath/shower room from toilet/bathroom.

Review 115:hotel is using the key to open the door and only one copy is available. it also requires to return the key to the front desk every time you go out, which is really troublesome if there are more than one people staying in the room.

Review 116:the location, its close to the main tourist attractions. there are convenient stores around the hotel at night

Review 117:- I spent $750 (US) per night and it didn't include a parking spot. They were full. The spot I found cost me $183 (US) for 18hrs, staff was not up front on the cost of parking in the surrounding area. - I like hard beds, this bed was excessively hard. - Poor room air circulation. - Breakfast buffet is not on par with price of stay. A few tables setup with some plates /warmers on them? Out of key breakfast items with slow /zero restocking. Staying here was an epic mistake - I feel like I've been robbed.

Review 118:Location was stellar.

Review 119:The equipment in the bathroom was a little old, not all the functions of jucuzzi worked. The location of the hotel is good, but not perfect: it is very close to different tourist attractions, but there are not many not too expensive eating places near the hotel. Gion is rather quiet in the evening, most restaurants close at 8-9 p.m., and there are no bars or other places to spend an evening.

Review 120:The room was rather spacious and clean with good bathroom facilities. The staff on the reception have good English and are very friendly and helpful. Every morning they explained me the most convenient ways to get to the sights I wanted to see, and even checked the websites and maps for me. The location is good - close to Yasaka jinjia, Chion-in and Gion. Nishiki market, Kiyomizudera temple and several other popular tourist sights are also within a walking distance.

Review 121:Our room was barely big enough to turn around in, but it was nice enough. Not much of a lobby and no real hotel services.

Review 122:The staff were young but helpful when they were there. It is more like a Holiday inn express with small rooms. Just a place to stay but a great location for exploring gion. Bathroom was tiny but modern and very functional.

Review 123:Though room was supposed to be non-smoking, it smelled of cigarette smoke the first night which was unfortunate. First night was muggy and the a/c didn't work. Staff said it was inoperative on whole 5th floor. Staff wouldn't help us book a restaurant by phone (they said they didn't offer this services though many hotels do).

Review 124:The location in Gyon is excellent - all of the Gyon sites are nearby. Rooms are very large by Japanese standards. Very comfortable beds and quiet.

Review 125:The Wifi did not work, even in the lobby, most of the time. Not close to any train station. They ask us to pay all in advance.

Review 126:In all fairness, this hotel had still room free when nobody else did, we booked it last minutes on the long weekrnd of 3rd November. It is close to the touristic areas, but it wasnot a good value for the money in my opinion. Yes the rooms are big, but it this really worthed a double bill? At the end we went to another hotel half the price close to Shijo station that was way more convenient.

Review 127:Was all good!

Review 128:Very spacious room, amazing tub, spotlessly clean, bright and airy. Extensive breakfast buffet choices, excellent location around the corner from Yasaka Shrine. Helpful staff.

Review 129:Close to Gion Corner and the temples. Our room was so good, the beds were huge and the view from our window overlooked temple grounds, was lovely. Highly recommend this hotel.
