Reviews for YMCA Hostel

Review 1:Female shower and toilet only on two levels, so I had to walk two levels up from my room. Not at all hostel atmosphere.

Review 2:Bed/mattress was good. nice bathroom, unfortunately no soap provided.

Review 3:A few things to consider, no alcohol anywhere on site. A bit odd as I'm an adult and paying that much should be able to enjoy a beer with dinner, sort of gave of a rehab/institute vibe. Showers too low for a 6ft man, had to bend. Also watered down washing up liquid, I mean come on you can't treat your guests like they are children who cannot conserve resources. Also maybe convert a few more rooms into amenities, the kitchens were tiny! As was the dining room. Had to walk a flight of stairs for toilets and showers. Also tannoy room calls at 9am every morning, just get up and knock on the rooms! So unprofessional and tacky. Lastly the paid wifi, they must make a fortune on it, I get a months unlimited usage back home for the price of 2gb here, times that by every guest paying it, really is a con.

Review 4:Front desk staff so enthusiastic, bed was comfy

Review 5:WiFi didn't work on top floor. Had to sit on the stairs on the lower level to access WiFi. All showers were cold one day.

Review 6:Friendly staff. Not too far out of town. Fridge in room

Review 7:Some people were cooking in the kitchen on the same floor I stayed and food smell disturbed me.They'd better close the door while cooked.

Review 8:The staff were very friendly and helpful. You can go to sightseeings on foot.It is very well located.

Review 9:The main complaint is that the kitchen facilities were limited and in particular; the space in the kitchens were somewhat limiting the amount of people that could be in the kitchen at any given time therefore, making meal times quite difficult. I also was disappointed that the communal dinning room was very small and only really sat approximately 6-8 people, so this meant bringing the meals/coffee upstairs 2-3 flights of stairs to our room to eat/drink.

Review 10:The location of the hostel was great and fairly central. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 11:The indain night manger was rude and a egomaniac he told me off for making a phone call in my room and openly abused other renters the walls were paper thin and you could hear people yelling on the street allso you were not allowed to drink alcohol on the premises oh and the rooms are the size of a jail cell

Review 12:It was close to the skytower ect

Review 13:Kitchen etc. downstairs. Would have been better on same floor.

Review 14:My grown up daughter and I were having a girls' weekend and the accommodation had three beds and was large enough.

Review 15:Some bed mattresses have soft spots with broken springs. Both Kitchen and Dining room are too small which becomes chaotic during peak dining periods; even the laundry rooms are bigger than the kitchens ! Some diners continue to occupy dining tables after usage which makes it inconvenient for others to eat; hence, forced to take food to eat in own room.

Review 16:Room, toilet & shower room are clean, spacious, and airy. Small fridge in each room sufficiently cold. Location is near K Road & Queen Street with wide variety of cafe, restaurants & shops. 15-mins walk to City Centre & can take City Bus instead. Friendly & helpful staff. Kitchen, dining & laundry facilities available.

Review 17:It was very difficult to understand the lady on the front desk. I rang the day before check in to ask if rooms had sheets....she couldn't understand me & I couldn't understand her. Found it rather frustrating. Someone with better english would be a better fit for welcoming guests of all nationalities.

Review 18:Great location. Very comfortable, clean rooms :)

Review 19:My card didn't go through when booking and although I phoned them when I was on the bus on my way, they insisted they could not hold my booking (even though booking.com said my booking was not yet cancelled) without me providing a valid credit card (which I ended up having to amend online), even though my card was not to be charged (unless I was a no show) and I was paying cash upon arrival. I paid a $40 cash bond, was asked (in a hurry not to miss my bus when leaving) if I could check if I had a $10 because they didn't have any change, when I frantically checked and said no, I was immediately handed 2 $20 notes...which they said they didn't have. Not very stealth... The lady on the morning shift spoke very poor English and very quickly, which I think some travelers may struggle to comprehend.

Review 20:Very clean, bed very comfortable, friendly guests, good quiet location

Review 21:The deposit for the key was not mentioned in online booking process, therefore was unprepared to pay for the key deposit. The location was fair however not as close to city central as we had hoped.

Review 22:The facilities were amazing.Easy to follow guide for where the facilities were located, e.g on which floor.

Review 23:Kitchens too small. One girl at the reception having long personal conversations with a client before assisting me/ other customers. Could have helped us first, then continue her conversation.

Review 24:Pleasant dorms, good modern bathrooms, very clean, lots of utensils in the kitchen!

Review 25:No wifi such an hostel and in our days should really have wifi for free its something you expect today!

Review 26:Had mini fridge bed was nice and located on a good spot !

Review 27:across the road from a fire station so frequently loud sirens would blare out. only given one pillow to sleep on which didn't make sleeping very comfortable.

Review 28:- inner city location made it very easy to get around - friendly staff - very good price

Review 29:Great location, all staff super friendly and helpful. Clean facilities and very happy as staff honest and refunded us $10 we were ove charged . Will be back and will tell our friends to stay here!!

Review 30:Small kitchens, small dining area. Didn't have toilets & showers for both genders on each floor.

Review 31:Single rooms all had fridges. Weekly rate discount.

Review 32:Many people there, so not that easy to get in touch with them. Quite expensive for a Hostel.

Review 33:Good equipment, very friendly staff, lots of flyers about what to do in Auckland.

Review 34:The receptionist was quiet hard to understand but she was still very friendly. And the kitchen was very small for the number of people (number of beds) that the hostel caters for.

Review 35:Location was great. Short walking distance to good restaurants & easy to find driving from the airport & first time driving in the city.

Review 36:Bathrooms are divided by gender, and not each floor has bathrooms for each gender. You may well stay two floors away from an appropriate bathroom.

Review 37:Cleans and new kitchens, and clean bathrooms

Review 38:Bit of a large scale flat, anonymous feel to it. Street side quite noisy. Didn't use kitchen or lounge, but looked small to me.

Review 39:New, clean, efficient.

Review 40:I was suprised that the bathrooms (toilets and showers) weren't cleaned in the evening like they do at YHA hostels. The kitchen is tiny and the sitting area was on a separate floor.

Review 41:Staff were all lovely

Review 42:I had been harassed and discriminated against by hostel managers. The facility is infested with bedbugs and fleas and contaminated with asbestos

Review 43:Most of the staff members nice.

Review 44:My room was with a strange smell. I let the door and window opened for approximately 20 min and the problem was solved.

Review 45:Friendly staff and all common areas were clean and tidy.

Review 46:Female toilets are not on every floor. Had to go to floor 4 from floor 1 not good wandering corridors at night in pyjamas.

Review 47:Things were clean and the were staff great

Review 48:I have no regrets.

Review 49:It was definetly the best experience I've ever had in Auckland. The place was great, excellent staff service, clean and neat bathrooms and close by to almost all the important places in town. I will definetly come back soon.

Review 50:Booked a twin for two nights and arrived to be told that they had no twin rooms and they put me in a triple room and I would have to check out the next day at 10 then check back into another room at 2pm. They also charged me $40 for a room key which is not mentioned anywhere in their policy. The staff person was rude. There is not even coffee making facilities in the room. Multiple phone calls were made to Booking com to sort this and they told Booking com staff I had been upgraded to a triple which is laughable. No one came to discuss it with me or apologise. A note was left under the door the next day saying I did not have to check out and could stay in the room another night. Will never stay again and recommend you do yourself a favour and book somewhere else. The Kiwi International charges less and is twice as good at this price point. At the end of this the staff sent an email to booking.com in response to my complaint with booking com saying that I was happy with the place and never talked to them. I will lay a formal complaint with them in response to their complete lack of customer service and taking money for a key which is not mentioned in their policy on booking.com.

Review 51:Would never stay here again

Review 52:Not that clean and make sure you get a room on the floor where kitchens, showers and toilets are located (male and female ones are on different floors)

Review 53:Perfect location - 10 mins walking from the Queen street. Reasonable price and nice rooms

Review 54:Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. It was great having a small fridge in the single room that I booked and the facilities were clean and tidy.

Review 55:Bed is too small. I can't sleep well. Internet is not free, Wifi can only be connected by one device.I can only find one power plug in the room. However,it is for the fridge.

Review 56:The staff is really nice.

Review 57:Diners Club cards not accepted.

Review 58:Excellent value for money. Very clean! Good location, there is a bus stop of Red CityLink bus - with a bus every 6-7 minutes. Events organized regularly in the lobby (movies, music, games).

Review 59:the hygiene in the washroom/ toilet needs improvement the wifi is so terribly bad that i always suffered from disconnection or slow speed

Review 60:staff is friendly and nice location is really convenient efficient response from the counter to enquiries or request

Review 61:good locate, staff very friendly and helpful, especial the security and reception. I left my key in the door, the security kept the key at front desk for me, thanks so much, and i will come again.

Review 62:I had a great stay at ymca. I had booked a female dorm but as they werefull they upgraded me to a single bedroom for free. Showers and kitchenwere very clean and the stuff always helped me out. Wifi is 3 nzd for500 mb which is quite fair. The town hall and Queensstreet are a fiveminute walk. I could even see the Bridge from my room. The peoplestaying there were really great too, we all went out together onenight... Highly recommended! Tip: The ywca is around the corner could begood too, and they probably have more female dorms ;)

Review 63:It can be noisy at times especially at weekend nights.

Review 64:The location is excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful. I also like the competitions and movie nights every week which helps residents get to know each other.

Review 65:None!

Review 66:Place is friendly, clean and secure. The reception is too good to be true and the rooms are nice and clean. noise was limited and I had a good sleep....

Review 67:Beds are small and cheap. Refrigerator in room is noisy.

Review 68:Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Would come again. Really recommended to anyone looking for somewhere cheap for a few weeks. Is very clean!! The house keeper works hard to keep this place quiet, tidy and respectful.

Review 69:I thought it was very clean and a safe place to stay. However, I did have a slight odor in the room.

Review 70:It was a good location. I could easily walk to the harbor and if I didn't want to walk I could easily take a bus. There were coffee shops to go to nearby.

Review 71:The only thing i found and didnt like was the step outside the shower door which unfortunately i tripped on and i wouldnt think i would be the only person that has happened to.

Review 72:Comphy beds lovely view

Review 73:I didn't like the extra hidden costs for a heater, wi-fi and laundry tokens. Nor did I like the earliness (around 5am) of staff banging against the door to leave general memos. The kitchen was always busy so it was hard to use and my neighbour was out of control with alarm clocks going off from 1am to 5:30 am at regular intervals as well as screaming weird stuff at me. Most annoying was that I cancelled a previous booking via an educational institution to another yet the exit date remained unaltered as requested-inspite of verbal confirmation. Most staff were great but one of the European ones was fairly transparent with her chagrin for coloured or even slightly tanned people. She's the one who suggests paying in cash for a heater although apparently this is not hostel policy. And on your way out she is the one who gives you incorrect instructions to catch the airport bus. So unkind and so unnecessary.

Review 74:I liked the comfortable bed and the showers were good. Also I met some kindly folk who I'd love to stay in touch with.

Review 75:I wish there was a at least a toilet on the same level as my room, and much better if the toilet and bathroom weren't separated.

Review 76:Convenient location, helpful staffs, spacious, perfect room temperature (not too hot not too cold), the fridge in my room that helped stocking some food inside.

Review 77:no free internet, even paid internet was very very slow :( no breakfast (though I got an special offer which was simply a small butter and jam with one bread and a Lipton tea)

Review 78:very nice and friendly atmosphere, lots of fun...

Review 79:Noisy even in my own single room, easy to get bugged by people next door (easy to hear noise from phones, laptop or even snoring). No daily or weekly clean up.

Review 80:Convenient location, beautiful view from your windows, neat room when receiving, polite staff.

Review 81:The staff were great. I was expecting to be in a dorm but at last minute they changed my booking and provided me a single room instead for the same price as a dorm bed. As usual facility's were of a high standard for a hostel. Looking forward to my next stay.

Review 82:Very cold! But then that's probably all of NZ just not being equipped to deal with winter weather. The bathrooms are also only on 2 floors I think, and paid wifi which is never good for backpackers on a budget!

Review 83:Had a good stay here- quite clinical and smells a bit like a hospital but clean and comfy. Was particularly grateful for having been upgraded to a triple room as I had checked in very early in the morning following an overnight flight.

Review 84:The bed was a bit uncomfortable and I did not see a women's loo on my floor. Also the lights in the hall way were super bright, would have been better if only half the lights were on.

Review 85:It was central and a short bus ride to the airport and easy to find. The room and bathroom was clean

Review 86:my first night was really good but second night our next door was talking on the phone too loud and we hear them very clearly!

Review 87:very clean! bed was comfort too! front desk is 24hr and all the staff is friendly! overall enjoy my stay there :)

Review 88:the shared kitchens are a bit small - the rooms they are in should be bigger.

Review 89:very clean and well maintained. continuous renovation of facilities. staff always more than willing to help.

Review 90:The single room was a bit claustrophobic, not because it was small (fair, regarding the price), but due to the lack of decoration. This was true for the whole building: very impersonal and "industrial". A little more care would help, with no major cost.

Review 91:Location, price.

Review 92:We were not told about acquiring parking ticket when we checked in. One unfortunate guest got his car towed away, only then, we were advised

Review 93:Staff were helpful and location very convenient

Review 94:Bad smell in my room, but was no longer there the next morning.

Review 95:Got upgraded from dorm room to single room upon arrival. Professional and lovely staff. Would definitely visit again.

Review 96:Just a little bit of a walk from Queen St but still very central to the city

Review 97:The staff were extremely pleasant and the facilities were beyond our expectation for the price we paid.

Review 98:The female washrooms were on another floor, but since I only stayed one night and spent most time out in the city, I didnt mind this.

Review 99:I stayed in a single room and was really happy it had a fridge - did not expect that :-) And very clean bathrooms!

Review 100:Have to purchase for the wifi, but the data were bizarrely deducted, I took a nap and when I woke up all my data were used-up!

Review 101:Lovely location with major attractions within easy walking distance, and the staff are very helpful.

Review 102:Uncomfortable bed, no power sockets by the bed, no bed light, paid Internet

Review 103:Good staff, big rooms, clean modern bathrooms, location, fridge in the room

Review 104:The hostel is close to the St John's ambulance and the Central Fire Station. It can get quite noisy when you are trying to sleep at night but if noise is not a problem, then it should be ok.

Review 105:Value for money...if you just want an inexpensive place to crash for a couple of nights. There's washer and dryer and a kitchen to share.

Review 106:My room was located beside the dining room. I could join in the people talking because I could hear their conversation clearly. And i couldn't have a decent rest when i needed one.

Review 107:Clean bathroom.

Review 108:Till now nothing actually

Review 109:I like this hostel for its friendliness and supportive staff. The management indeed is trying to keep the premises clean and tidy. And it is close to down town.

Review 110:Having stayed at the YMCA in Christchurch where the experience was excellent, this was a huge let down. Too many rules, rude and officious staff, grungy rooms in need of a makeover.

Review 111:The street noise from the central city. But that's the flip side of a central city location.

Review 112:The essentials were all there and some other facilities I did not use.

Review 113:Very loud and very noisy place. It is one of those places where door slamming and banging takes place 24 hours a day, you will wake up no less than 10 times per night from your neighbor slamming the door as hard he/she can, this is the accepted custom here. The internet is horrible, do not pay the extra money for it. The smell from the kitchen will come into your room until midnight, when they finally decide to close the door (of the kitchen). People will start cooking as early as 6am and you will hear everything, no matter where your room is (the kitchen is in the middle of the hall) and by the time you leave the place you will hate the noise of the microwave door when it gets slammed, and again, this takes place until late at night. This is a cheap backpackers place, go somewhere else if you want to rest.

Review 114:Clean place, easy to find

Review 115:We were 3 friends are they assigned us 3 single rooms. It was too expensive.

Review 116:Good accomodation and lobby with pool table, tennis table and other games.

Review 117:Noise. Locatedxat major intersection on motorway out of town, opposite fire station and ambulance. Even earplugs didn't cut it.

Review 118:the helpful staff, spotlessly maintained, good bathrooms

Review 119:There was not a single ladies toilet on the floor I stopped on. It seemed unusual as I think there were 2 male toilets.

Review 120:Very reasonable price for accommodation.

Review 121:The kitchen's facility is not good and small. And aroun 19 o'clock it was little bit crowd.

Review 122:Shower room, toilet is very clean. And they wash our seat once a week. Staff is very friendly and kindly.

Review 123:Both the showers and toilets were spotless as was the floor. The price was very reasonable and the desk staff was very helpful and courteous. I thoroughly recommend the YMCA

Review 124:No combined kitchen and dining area. No hand basin.

Review 125:Within easy walking distance (via Meyers Park) to the Aotea Square and associated venues. Ample parking (have to pay $15 extra though).

Review 126:There is no possibility to store your clothes while you are in the shower without getting them wet or leaving them unattended. Rooms are way to hot.

Review 127:It's okay. Beds are comfortable. Very nice staff

Review 128:Small kitchen, not much crockery and cutlery, could be noisy at night

Review 129:Clean, fairly spacious rooms; very helpful staff; free day pass in gym; fridge in room; good location, good value, spacious, clean showers and loos.

Review 130:I arrived in to Auckland on an overnight bus. I checked in at 7:00am knowing that the check in would be 12pm. I was able to store my bags while I went around the city. I said I would be back for 12 but arrived maybe at 12:15. I was disappointed that the room was not ready but they had it ready in about 15 mins.

Review 131:I like the silence, the tidyness, the staff, the fridge in the rooms and that there is the possibility to ask for a fan as the rooms don't have refrigeration

Review 132:Kitchen is very small Number of washing machines is a bit to low number of people. It is near a busy road. Only one elevator.

Review 133:The rooms are small but very bright. Staff is very helpfull and friendly. Everything is very clean, showers and toilets are new.

Review 134:Key and umbrella deposit amount, considering credit card details were taken when booking was made.. but in the end I was ok with it

Review 135:everything was easy fast..

Review 136:It was hot and stuffy some nights even with the open window, and I was kept awake by some disturbing screaming from nearby streets or apartments.

Review 137:A wholesome atmosphere that promotes good, clean activities. I found guests to be friendly and interesting. The bed was comfortable.

Review 138:Young man, there's no need to feel down.I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new townThere's no need to be unhappy.Young man, there's a place you can go.I said, young man, when you're short on your dough. You can stay there, and I'm sure you will findMany ways to have a good time. It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.They have everything for you men to enjoy,You can hang out with all the boys ...It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.You can get yourself cleaned, you can have a good meal,You can do whatever you feel ...Young man, are you listening to me?I said, young man, what do you want to be?I said, young man, you can make real your dreams. But you got to know this one thing! No man does it all by himself.I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf,And just go there, to the y.m.c.a.I'm sure they can help you today. It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.They have everything for you men to enjoy,You can hang out with all the boys ...It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.You can get yourself cleaned, you can have a good meal,You can do whatever you feel ...Young man, I was once in your shoes.I said, I was down and out with the blues.I felt no man cared if I were alive.I felt the whole world was so tight ...That's when someone came up to me,And said, young man, take a walk up the street. There's a place there called the y.m.c.a.They can start you back on your way. It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a.They have everything for you men to enjoy,You can hang out with all the boys ...Y-m-c-a ... you'll find it at the y-m-c-a.Young man, young man, there's no need to feel down.Young man, young man, get yourself off the ground.Y-m-c-a ...

Review 139:Bed was not so comfortable. Only one dining room was open, so it was usually hard to find a place to eat

Review 140:Quiet place. Staff was really nice and helpful
