Reviews for The Other Corner Habarana
Review 1:A 'real' Eco resort, offering the opportunity to see lots of wildlife - monkeys, birds and fire flies. An early morning walk with the naturalist was a real highlight. Great accommodation and a good breakfast. Highly recommend.
Review 2:Rooms a little bit dark, hard to read at night.
Review 3:Really great team and management, wished we had more time to enjoy. Loved the garden and tree house, food v good, nice and clean.
Review 4:overall environment is good, but surprise me that the room did not offer the blank but the thin bed sheet, even I asked the staff, it just give me another bed sheet to cover body under air condition.
Review 5:The long-distance driver (organised by the hotel) who took us to Galle from Habarana was very disappointing. 6 hours without a food stop and we had to ask to turn the air conditioning on. Speeding (flagged down by the police) and conducting personal business on the phone whilst driving and whilst we were paying him - very inappropriate and at times we did not feel safe. Didn't know where to drop us in Galle despite us providing the information several times. In the end we got out of the car in Galle and found the guest house ourselves. Do not recommend.
Review 6:Everything except what is written in the next column.
Review 7:If you had the chance to get some external drivers, do it. They are not secure enough in the way they are driving nor guide us during the visit we planned. Moreover this is far too expansive for the service rendered.
Review 8:We stayed in the main double apartment. Amazing view and situation. Food is correct but could be more authentic.
Review 9:If you don't want to travel by train then get your information from the Internet as they got completely mixed up and we ended up making an extra journey when we really didn't need to.
Review 10:The place is lovely and the staff work so hard, the evening meal is cooked in front of you and the chefs did a really great job! The pool is great too.
Review 11:Nothing
Review 12:The staff! Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. The nature around the lodge. The silence and good atmosphere. The pool that looks very natural.
Review 13:If there was anything not to like, I didn't find it! Only issue some guests might have is that you may cross paths with a lizard or frog - for me that was a plus though!
Review 14:This place is amazing. Eric, Roshan and their staff go above and beyond to make your stay memorable, from arranging safaris and trips to the ancient sites to going out for an early morning walk with their in-house naturalist, Dhilip. The food was excellent and, for 3 of the 5 nights I was there they did themed dinners with the chef actually cooking in front of diners. It's right on the edge of Habarana tank, where you can see amazing birds and, if you're lucky, wild elephants in the late afternoon.
Review 15:Everything was perfect although a better sign on the main road would help find the location.
Review 16:The location was very different to anything else we had experienced in Sri Lanka. The standard and finish of the private bungalows was of a very high standard and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The naturalist really enhanced our stay with his knowledge and gave us a greater appreciation of the wildlife in the area.
Review 17:We had a wonderful 5 nights stay in villa paradise. Arrived quite late on the first day, even then the staff was only happy to help. We had booked 2 villas and they were very comfortable and spacious and was cleaned almost every day. The choice for breakfast, whether local or continental was amazing and the chef was willing to accommodate any of our request. The villas are away from the road, the is in a tranquil location, with the sound of peacocks etc. there were peacocks in the trees, a few land monitors, iguana's, visited their own vegetable garden and the manager Eric and his staff made sure that we had a wonderful stay. Would definitely recommend it. Overall, an excellent stay and really pleased.
Review 18:Very peaceful location. Extremely helpful staff. We felt that one night was not enough and we would have loved to stay more. The place is immerse in the nature but you still feel that you have your confort and that nature doesn't get in the way. We were welcomed with a fresh juice which was highly appreciated.
Review 19:A bit isolated and couldn't really walk into Habanara because of the road, but not really a problem as the staff telephoned for Tuk Tuk's .
Review 20:We loved our "Family Room" bungalow on stilts and the beautiful surroundings. The AC in one bedroom was not working but the manager Eric had a new system installed the next morning so all was well. All the staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Food was very good and reasonable. The early morning bird watching walk with Dilip was great fun and informative, saw lots of different birds and worth getting up for. Eric also arranged our onward travel arrangements which was a great help and many thanks to him.
Review 21:Room internal finishing (clayey walls and wooden roof) attract aunts, bugs and lizards. Suction fan should be provided in the bathroom . Lighting inside room needs improvement . Housekeepers should wash their cleaning mubs much more often as it stinks when they clean.
Review 22:Friendly staff helped and guided us to the enjoy our stay . Food was really good
Review 23:The shower wasn't very powerful but nothing else.
Review 24:Everyone was very helpful and courteous. The surroundings are beautiful, so many birds to spot and monkeys. The pool was very welcome. Great breakfast with flavoursome tea and tasty evening meals.Good knowledgeable guide for birdwatching.
Review 25:The driver we had booked through Starron Tours beforehand was ok, but not exceedingly good.
Review 26:Excellent local managers with a great staff! Everything they organized for us (local drivers to get us to attractions in the vicinity, elephant ride etc.) worked out wonderfully. We loved the food, too. Great location with in-house naturalist.
Review 27:Enthusiastic environmentally conscious staff and surroundings. Well situated for walks in bush and around the water tank. Wonderful bird watching and an experienced knowledgeable guide on staff to support you. Great restaurant and dining. Handy spot to Sigiriya Rock and Polonnaruwa
Review 28:loved it's remote location on the edge of herbaria and the lake. Dhillips enthusiasm for the wildlife and birds and friendly staff and of course the pool.
Review 29:This beautiful small hotel is nestled in the wilds of nature where birds, monkeys and an occasional elephant wander. The staff is very friendly and sees to any possible need.
Review 30:the staff in a restaurant could be more discrete and competent
Review 31:the place is really peacefull and quiet, the room is clean, staff at the reception desk is very kind and helpful, breakfast is OK
Review 32:- not really hot water (more mild water haha) - somewhat poor internet in the rooms
Review 33:Located in great rainforest, and 5 minutes drive from elephants, good place to go to Sigirya, very hospitable hosts, fair food prices. If you need local host/drive around the region make sure you ask them for Nisha, he was great and our time spent with him was surely the best part of Sri Lanka we experienced
Review 34:the price is a bit expensive, but it worth it
Review 35:Very nice place, very kind owner, the service is perfect, the food is very good also, all people were very nice and gentle, lots of monkeys
Review 36:Nothing really to complain about. Just for a heads up, the location on google maps it is not very well marked (the staff will look into this and correct it). The access is from the main road and not from the lake side.
Review 37:This place is something unique. Upon our arrival we didn't really know what to expect, but we were blown away. We had a tree challet, had a private balcony from where you could here all the birds and see the geckos, lizards and even a land monitor wondered close. It was just fantastic to spend 2 days so close to nature. The room itself has everything you need, aircon, amneties, a huge bed, etc. Staff was excellent and very helpful. You knew that they are doing their best to make us feel confortable. Since it was our honeymoon, our bed was very nicely decorated, we've got free fruits in our room and our dinner table was also decorated very nicely. Expect european prices at the restaurant, but it's worth it. The food is great. Throughout our 2 day stay around Habarana we only had food at the TOC restaurant. Also, we were looking for an elephant back safari and a jeep safari around the area. The owner took care of everything and all services provided were amazing. Last, but not least, TOC has an inhouse bird expert with whom we went to a complimentary birdwatching walk. We've seen some amazing birds, a land monitor, even a water monitor as well. We hope we will have the chance to return one day.
Review 38:Due to the structure of the cababa roof we had a very small leak onthe last night after a few days rain. We had such a wonderful staythat at that point we weren't even phased and just accepted thatwe were in the jungle and these things happen. Staff were aplogeticand wanted to help but we said not to worry! Not a complaint but Iguess something that they could look into and fix to ensure it doesnthappen to future guests
Review 39:This was our favourite hotel in Sri Lanka. We had our own private cabanain the middle of the rainforest. It was beautiful, lovely decor andclean and comfortable. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful! Weeven received a thank you photo card at the end of our stay, such awonderful gesture with their own personal touch! Food was good, locationstunning and great for travelling cultural triangle, driversaccommodation, an abundance of wildlife, dropped off gift bags for localchildren which Eric happily took off my hands and handed over to thelocal nursery school, went for a lovely guided bird walk which Dhillip! We can't fault anything.
Review 40:As the place was located in a nature area, there were inevitably some small bugs around the place. The staff, however, did an excellent job reducing any inconvenience that we might face due to this issue.
Review 41:We enjoyed the beautiful and comfortable rooms, great food, memorable early morning nature walk and the excellent service!
Review 42:The rooms are a bit dark.
Review 43:Staff very nice. Good location. Food was good. The villas are really nice and you can see plenty of animals around them. Would definitely go back for longer. They definitely improved based on the previous negative comments.
Review 44:Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The staff were all very helpful and friendly, food was excellent, the chalets were quirky and gorgeous, very well maintained grounds and pool. Overall, an excellent place to stay and very good value for money
Review 45:During a heavy rain in the evening the ceiling was leaking quite a lot, we had to relocate the bed in the middle of the room to stay dry. Need a reading lamp on the desk.
Review 46:The calm environment in the nature is beautiful. Spacious, clean and comfortable cabin with good beds.
Review 47:Nothing at all!
Review 48:This was by far the best place I stayed in whilst visiting Sri Lanka. Beautiful place, quiet, very peaceful and very helpful staff. It was like being on another planet. Will def go again as soon as I can!
Review 49:Nothing, it was all very good
Review 50:Everything - the rooms are in thatched cottages in beautiful grounds with a swimming pool and by the lake. The staff are very friendly and provide excellent service. The beds are very comfy and the food was delicious (make sure you specify if you want it spicy, if not it might be a little bland). The breakfast was also very good. They organised safari and boat trip on the lake for us at good prices. This is the best place we stayed on our trip. I really recommend The Other Corner hotel.
Review 51:I knew that you needed to like nature in order to "like" this place, but I would've appreciated a little more light in the room, and especially in the bathroom. We had not bugs or even mosquitoes in our room, but lots of harmless ants in our bathroom (but they stuck to their line of traffic and never deviated!). Also, the large jacuzzi tub seems to be a waste and made it difficult to shower (I recommend they remove it).
Review 52:This hotel by far (very far) had the absolute best and most attentive staff during our entire two-week stay in Sri Lanka. The atmosphere was great, you literally feel like you are in the middle of the jungle... which, in fact, you are! The restaurant staff couldn't have been nicer, and the food was the best (and most economical) that we came across in Sri Lanka. The manager is a delightful man and it was a pleasure to chat with him and be greeted by him every morning. The young man in charge of the restaurant is the most professional, customer-service oriented person I met during my entire stay.
Review 53:The pool was out of use so children were a bit disappointed.
Review 54:The excellent setting. We had a wonderful family cabin with a veranda. The sumptuous breakfast served to us on veranda. The birds - Dhilip de Alwis is a knowledgeable guide who will give you as much info as you want on all the wildlife in the surrounding area. We saw land monitors, mongoose, a host of water birds, wild peacock and many other creatures along the adjoining lake.
Review 55:The food was only average, fairly bland, and given there is nothing else within walking distance, there isn't much alternative.
Review 56:The setting, monkey's on the veranda in the morning, wild feel, lack of TVs and electronic interruptions to be replaced by the sound of nature! The place was clearly looked after with a lot of pride.
Review 57:We loved the atmosphere. It's like an ecolodge, lot of space, nice swimming pool, charming rooms and perfect bathrooms, dinners so good, breakfast ideal, staff really kind and helpfull We loved that place
Review 58:Very idyllic place to stay and very nice people! Good dinner and also a good breakfast!
Review 59:No hot water, dampness in the room
Review 60:Uniqueness, professional and friendly staff, excellent restaurant.peaceful
Review 61:overpriced
Review 62:service was good and so was the food.
Review 63:No proper car park.car park is biside the road.not safe
Review 64:Quatness of the place
Review 65:Nothing!!!
Review 66:Perfect Food; Beautiful Garden; Really friendly Staffs; I would come there anytime again!!!! Thank you all for this perfect days!!!
Review 67:Nice and Calm place. Friendly staff. Delicious Food. I can give 5 stars. :)
Review 68:Good hotel, friendly staff and nice wood lodges. Good breakfast and nice local curries for dinner.
Review 69:eco style, restaurant, pool
Review 70:the property, the ambience, nature trail, bird watching, swimming pool, watch tower, sound of the stream
Review 71:it is very remote. So make sure you got your groceries.
Review 72:Great location in the cultural triangle. Good restaurant. The outside shower was great.
Review 73:Great location for the cultural triangle and for the local lake and wildlife. Comfortable rooms and nice food. Good staff.
Review 74:Noice of traffic
Review 75:Nature and Staff
Review 76:Environment, amazing staff, proximity to natural environment
Review 77:Everything exceeded our expectations! The room, the food, the service and the facilities! A delightful place to chill out and relax.
Review 78:The accommodation had great character and it was very comfortable. The staff were very obliging.
Review 79:Environment. Proximity to sites. Friendliness of staff. Preparedness to do whatever needed to make stay enjoyable.
Review 80:A really good experience all round
Review 81:very caring and helpful personal, very nice and clean rooms, good breakfast and dinner, one of the nicest places in our tripp through Sri Lanka
Review 82:I genuinely did not find anything not to like about it.
Review 83:I had a great stay at the Other Corner and would recommend to otherswithout hesitation. It's location just outside of Habarana isperfect for those who want to see the major sites of the CulturalTriangle but don't want to shift hotels everyday. Sigiriya ispractically around the corner, Dambulla just down the road from thereand Polonnaruwa is an easy 40-minute tuktuk ride away. Just before Iarrived my credit card was suddenly cancelled but Eric the manager wentout of his way to help me sort that out. After years working inhospitality in Europe, he has clearly learned how to care for guests.Dhilip (the Birdman) the naturalist was an enthusiastic and engagingguide on a bush walk and an elephant safari, and a kind and humble manto boot. The wait staff was unfailingly polite and the food delicious.Even the housekeepers had charming surprises in store, whether it wasfolding fresh towels in the shape of an elephant or writing'Welcome' in flowers petals on my bed. I stayed in somewonderful places in Sri Lanka, but The Other Corner was easily thefriendliest and most welcoming of all.
Review 84:bathroom could be a bit more mantained
Review 85:jungle Feeling very good Food for dinner, 3 times sri lankan dishes Swimming pool privacy bird watching on the dam behind the gounds very friendly and helpful staff
Review 86:A bit far from the crossroads (but still walkable)
Review 87:Beautiful surroundings Large room Very quiet Friendly staff Great food (vegetables all grown on their land) By the lake Good a/c
Review 88:When we were planning our visit to sri lanka we immediately noticed that TOC was the place where we wanted to stay in order to explore the cultural triangle. ( we even adjusted our shedule) Location was fantastic, bungalows very comfortable, the food super, the service very good, children very welcome and the bird watching with dhilip absolutely top. Also the cooking class was super. Congratulations TOC !
Review 89:We would recommend arranging a driver in a bigger city such as Kandy as there is a very limited amount of drivers available in the Habarana area which means that although they are great and know the area well it's a bit pricey. But the hotel were helpful and agreed a good deal for us for the day.
Review 90:The photos don't do this place justice, fantastic place, great secluded location, a real haven. The food at the hotel was amongst the best we had in Sri Lanka and the chalet we stayed in was spacious and beautiful! Wonderful bathroom with open air shower and big bathtub. A great welcome by the staff and manager who also arranged an impromptu elephant safari for us. This must not be missed! It was amazing to see the wild elephants up close and our guide was very good and knowledgeable. This hotel is perfectly located for visits to Sigiriya, Dambulla and the nearby national park. All wonderful and we will definitely be returning!
Review 91:If you like spicey food, please tell the staff, otherwise they cook very European - we have to admit, we love it spicey
Review 92:Being within the nature, observing monkeys, birds and iguanas straight from our terrace, great place
Review 93:we had changed our check in date and had the e-mail confirmation to prove it but they claimed they weren't notified. We were given a room that was lovely to look at but ceiling was covered with black mold and it was VERY musty! Luckily we had surgical masks with us and had to wear them for the night we were there. The place mats in the restaurant were covered in stains, although the food, service and all other cleanliness was high quality. The hotel has no liquor license.
Review 94:The staff were very friendly, the food was good, the location was nice but there were some significant downsides.
Review 95:Bit more info on arrival would be useful. Excursions are booked transport only, and we suffered on a couple of trips from a lack of guidance. Next time around we'd request a guide too...
Review 96:Incredibly enthusiastic and friendly staff, great peaceful location in the middle of the jungle... lovely, informative nature walks are included with the on-site naturalist (not naturist!).
Review 97:Our family rooms' balcony is sandy and dusty. The air-con in one of our rooms is out of order.
Review 98:Great living with pure nature.
Review 99:serves was not good and one security guy only on the main gate, for a big open area like a small forrest, so you have no secure for any danger. they dont even have a fence or security sistem. stuff are verry nice in talking only but no action.
Review 100:we like the area, the nature and the idea of wodden houses.
Review 101:The lighting was a bit dim in the rooms. I had agreed via email that a train booking would be made for our family but found when we got there this hadn't been done. They advised us to book ourselves in Kandy, however when we arrived all the trains were booked and no seats available, so very disappointed. I had anticipated the high season , that is why I had contacted Shyami, but she didnt do what she said she would :(
Review 102:We really liked our walk around the lake with Dilip, he helped us see lots of animals, we even spotted a big crocodile. He took us out on the lake and was very knowledgeable about all the birds. The lake was beautiful. Meals were good, more diverse menu than we have found elsewhere. The pool was lovely. Quiet at night and very relaxing spot.
Review 103:nothing
Review 104:the situation into the jungle> mister Eric, the manager is very friendly and helpfull> Dilip, the naturalist teach us a ot about the environment. all the personnal is very kind> beuatiful place, a lot of animals in the garden> we enjoyed a lot, and hope to come back soon>
Review 105:These are only minor issues. The toilets in our rooms got blocked quite easily, but the staff were quick to fix them, and the sheets always had a slight damp feel to them. This did not affect our quality of sleep.
Review 106:We were greeted with hot towels and a glass of fresh juice upon arrival. The staff took care of our luggage so we didnt have to cart it all the way to our rooms. Nothing was too much trouble and all trips were organised for us by the manager Eric. The resident naturalist, Dhillup, was informative and funny, and went out of his way to ensure we had a great experience. I would highly recommend TOC Habarana as a place to stay on your visit to Sri Lanka
Review 107:Bathroom was a bit smelly . Would have prefered a nice big shower instead of the jacussi which wasn't in keeping with the surroundings .
Review 108:Had a lovely stay for three nights at the begining of our holiday . Wish we could have stayed longer as it was my favorite place during our stay in Sri Lanka and so chilled out . Eric the Manager made us feel very at home . Enjoyed our nature walk through the jungle with the naturist !
Review 109:We were very sorry that we could not stay longer.
Review 110:Unique, simple and comfortable chalets surrounded by jungle are perfect place to enjoy in nature around Habarana Lake or visit historical places of cultural triangle. The staff were very friendly and services were excellent.
Review 111:A real very pleasant hotel and team. The hotel is installed in a huge between a river and a water body that you can appreciate at the sunset or sunsine. The team is discret and professional. It is a very good location for a stop. I stronbly recommend it and I will come back.
Review 112:Fantastic ecolodge in the jungle. Nexto to a fantastic lagoon full ofwildlife. Absolutely lovely staff. All commodities you need eventhough you are surrounded by wildlife and jungle! Best place we stayedin sri Lanka!
Review 113:Cockroaches in the room. Expensive. Food is mediocre. Very expensive transport if you order it from the hotel. They billed my credit card twice, I had to contact booking.com support to get the refund. Be careful.
Review 114:Very nice location, very green territory, nice bungalows.
Review 115:I must say that the warm welcome by Mr Eric & his staff made us feel great after a tiring day. The surroundings were fabulous as my family loves and care about the nature, and wild life which TOC is all about. The naturalist Mr de Alwis is surely an asset to the TOC, who took us on bird watching which we enjoyed so much. The boat ride on the lake was fantastic and my wide, kids and I truly enjoyed it. The boys at the restaurant were very friendly and we loved the food. The chalet was beautifully designed and was very comfortable. The bathroom and the the toilet was clean. All in all it was truly a wonderful experience we had at the TOC. My whole family is touched by the impeccable hospitality of the wonderful staff at TOC. My wife & I felt totally safe to allow our two boys to run around, climb the tree houses and enjoy their day completely free. I will surely be visiting TOC again.
Review 116:I asked for an extra night and the answer changed three times from the breakfast until lunch. In the afternoon I got the okay, but by then I had planned all over again.
Review 117:The location is perfect to visit Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Sigiriya, with suitable transportation provided by the Hotel. The kitchen provides tasty breakfasts and meals. The other corner is far from the main road so you it is very quiet in the bungalows. Staff is very nice and helpful with impeccable english. Within the hotel's price range it was the best hotel we stayed in during our visit. The rooms are clean, neat, and very eco-friendly. If you don't like geckos, don't be surprised to find them in your room - they are harmless.
Review 118:Couldnt find any real faults but if you dont like insects be aware thatthe lights at night can attract some seriously big ones
Review 119:A lovely designed traditional stilted cabin. Very friendly helpfulstaff. Good traditional sri lankan food. Peaceful setting with staffhappy to do a bird watching tour around the nearby lake. Very goodlocation for visiting cultural triangle sites.
Review 120:Need clear directions to entrance Need play area for children Fans indining area
Review 121:Setting, welcome, friendly an helpful staff, separate cabins, Isolation, great get away from the humdrum of life.
Review 122:Great staff and truly a taste of nature at its best.
Review 123:An exceptional setting topped by friendly and knowledgeable staff.
