Reviews for Castaways Resort & Spa On Mission Beach

Review 1:The resort offers a continental buffet breakfast included in your stay, which was surprisingly nice, but I would be willing to pay more for my room in order to have a full buffet breakfast. All in all the thing I didn't like the most about the resort though was leaving....

Review 2:mission beach is a boring place, but at castaways that doesn't matter. You can spend hours in the pool staring across the perfect lawn at one of north queensland's most picturesque beaches. I opted for an upgrade to the coral sea rooms and rate my decision as the best I made for my whole holiday, each room faces the sea, and with a sun bed on our balcony it was easy to relax and get lost in the view. The bar offers cocktails at a typical resort price, but better than expected quality, the helpful and friendly bar staff are dedicated to making the perfect cocktail for you and their espresso martini is magical. The restaurant has an exciting menu but with a price tag to match, however any fear of not getting value for money is dismissed once you take the first bite of your meal. Castaways is the jewel in the crown of mission beach, and will draw me back to the area for years to come.

Review 3:The public areas had no air conditioning. Difficult in intense heat. The pool and recreation areas were run down rusty and tired. The breakfast display fridge holding yoghurt fruit and cheese smelled of fish. Meals were not explained properly as staff were not trained or informed. The staff were not communicative nor very friendly. Extra charges credit cards, laundry powder, and breakfast extras were annoying. The experience was not WOW, disappointing.

Review 4:This hotel has prime position on the beachfront.

Review 5:Stale smell in room. Pool of water on floor in front of toilet, which we dropped the bath mat onto before going out. When we came back, we realised by the much stronger smell that this was in fact urine, which was also all over the back and sides of the toilet. We used a jug to throw water over the whole lot to wash it down the drain, then sprayed the area with perfume to kill the smell. Then each night at about 3 am the fire alarm goes off for 15 minutes - no-one answering any phones, and no loudspeaker to announce the 'all-clear' when it eventually stopped. All-in-all, a very disappointing stay in a very expensive place (on our previous stay, the bathroom rubbish bin had not been emptied, so looks like the cleaning staff either don't know their job, or are sabotaging the place).

Review 6:The best part of our stay was the local village shops and restaurants, and the beaches.

Review 7:Inclusive continental breakfast was very poor for standard of hotel. They obviously wish you to purchase from their a la carte breakfast menu!

Review 8:Location was great

Review 9:Continental breakfast very ordinary. Went out for breakfast second day. No room cleaning on NYD but 10% surcharge on food. Service slow.

Review 10:Proximity to beach and restaurants

Review 11:The place was old and the brochure was misleading. The brochure indicates a resort style area. However we were staying in the rAinforest block and you literally had to go across a residential road to get to the rainforest building. It was on seperate lots

Review 12:Location

Review 13:we booked 6 rooms in total to all be on bottom floor as a little family reunion.. my mother the oldest in the group ended upstairs without rest of us knowing until too late.. she was the reason we wanted downstairs as her mother who lives in mission beach we all came to see.. to get upstairs and spend time with her daughter was impossible.. this was disappointing.. boxing daybreakfast at beachfront was a circus very short staffed and I do not know the dishwasher situation but every plate was dirty.. there was no tongs in fridge to get fruit, ham , salami or cheese.... everyone using fingers... pretty foul.. . I often frequent castaways through out the year and usually fantastic... this was disappointing :-((

Review 14:when we checked in front office lady was fantastic and very informative and helpful.. staff at castaways rainforest very friendly and helpful also.. nothing was a problem

Review 15:Xmas lunch was a total rip off. $100 to be cramped like sardines to eat and a buffet with minimal food choice. Squashed, hot and sweaty. Yuk!!

Review 16:Location. Awesome rooms and pool

Review 17:Misleading menu & disappointing food for your dollar. I ordered a sourdough loaf that arrived as a few slices of toast and weren't sourdough. The accompanying carafe of Sangria was 70% ice poured into glasses of more ice. Most guests were eating off site which is a shame because the restaurant location & layout is breathtaking. Inexperienced restaurant manager, untrained wait staff and a very limited continental buffet breakfast, certainly nowhere close to 5 star. The restaurant lets this resort down!

Review 18:Location is superb.

Review 19:I booked a 'Resort room with Rainforest View'. Didn't realize that it was at the complex down the road from the main resort. It's certainly not like a resort there as the rooms are in need of repair, are musky and hot water is limited. Also my booking said 'Breakfast included' but it was only a continental. This should be made clear at the time of booking. It certainly was not value for money and I won't be returning or recommending this place to friends/family.

Review 20:castaways should not be advertising old run down motels as part of there group until renovations or upgrades made. staff at main hotel very unhelpful

Review 21:The room was old, dated and in desperate need of a revamp. Paint and tiles chipped in bathroom, hole in bathroom ceiling above shower, even the fridge didn't work. So disappointing. Far too expensive for the lack of quality of the room.

Review 22:The view from the balcony was exellent.

Review 23:Like a significant number if reviewers in the previous months be aware that the rainforest rooms are the old 'Mackays motel' which has been acquire this year and which I believe was one of the first motels in the area and the rooms show it. Im not one to complain so I didnt as it wasy booking on booking.com but I will review...There is not much staff presence over there with other guests smoking, drinking and swearing at the pool which I wouldnt have expected to be permitted...Previous suggestion it should be marketed as a separate budget accomodation are valid and not advertised under the Castaways branding (just read the many reviews all with similar commentary) as when you check your booking it is obvious but if your a regular and not expecting it you might be surprised

Review 24:We were disappointed that we weren't at the location we thought we were to be.we were away from the main building and I wish we had have been aware of that at time of booking.

Review 25:The Raiinforest roomwas not to our srandard after staying at the resort many times before. Looked like backpackers .Spoke to manager problem resolved

Review 26:All of the above after a disappointing startl. We were unaware that they had aquired another location (The Rainforest )

Review 27:Mound on ceiling in bathroom, Generally a bit run down in room , paint peeling , dust, not really worth the $225 we paid . Obviously we paid for the veiw !! Not the room .

Review 28:Fantastic view of the beach from our room.

Review 29:Thought the resort building could do with some better maintenance.

Review 30:View was awesome. Comfort is important for me and I got a good night sleep as the beds had the soft pillow top, not like most hotels which have hard beds.

Review 31:Net protection that kill the view on last floor for an " ocean view" What a shame...

Review 32:Amazing staff, noemie at the bar restaurant All of the girl from reception !!

Review 33:The pool near the rainforest rooms needed a new ladder, very dangerous , resulting in me getting a very bruised leg while trying to get out.

Review 34:Quiet location

Review 35:Empty glasses and dirty plates left lying around the pool all day. I firstly had a room above the restaurant. Music was too loud and had to change rooms.

Review 36:Friendly staff. Excellent and very beautiful location.

Review 37:The Location. I felt relaxed from the moment I arrived. Staff were happy and helpful, the view from my room was stunning, the food was excellent, sitting in a deck chair looking out to the beach was like being in a postcard.

Review 38:See what I liked. Nothing. Not even bed. Black mold. Mattress springs poking us. Rooms were horrible and a health hazard with mold. And asked for a refund. Still waiting.

Review 39:Contacted owner for a refund but to still no avail. Room had black mold in bathroom. Springs were coming out of bed. And the gym is just a treadmill and maybe 3 other pieces. Don't bank on it. Overall a bad experience in the rooms off the main. Need a refund.

Review 40:That we had to stay on the other side off the road in the older rooms

Review 41:Good breakfast. The main house has a nice interior and a remarkable view on the beach. Stuff is very friendly

Review 42:The mattress was so uncomfortable I slept on the sofa and my partner pulled his swag out of the car and slept on the floor. The "included breakfast" included cereal or croissants. We ordered off the restaurant menu. Both the edge pool and rainforest room pools were both dirty so we opted for swims in the ocean.

Review 43:The location being so close to the beautiful beach was great.

Review 44:The room was like a seedy motel room! Perhaps they had an issue with cleaners- the mould on the side of the fridge wiped off easily. Worst room I had stayed in in Australia.

Review 45:The location by the beach was lovely

Review 46:The room was not what I expected. Very out dated decor and fittings, very old furniture, very dirty! The girl at reception wasn't interested which made the experience even worse. Thankfully the beach was amazing!

Review 47:The beach

Review 48:Loved the positioning, right on the beach, beautiful scenery, food was great, cocktails were even better!!! Staff were extremely friendly & the resort is well set-out! Only complaint was the gym was not very well equipped but I am a gym junkie & I understand most people come here to just take it easy & lay on the beach, which I did alot of also!! Will certainly be back in the near future!!!!

Review 49:Garden View property was previously block of flats now purchased by Castaways. Some of the rooms seemed to be permanent tenants. Heavy smoking in courtyard.

Review 50:Friendly and informative staff making sure we had everything we needed since we were not attached to the resort. Web special is for older motel property. You get what you pay for. Good for 1 night and very clean. Access to all resort property, pools, and beach front.

Review 51:Staff are amazing. Veronica on reception very professional, helpful and genuinely kind. The bar staff were awesome. Best Mojito (thank you "Mojito King"). Beautiful view, beach walks before a fresh breakfast, comfortable bed. Great place to unwind and relax.

Review 52:Location in an old motel room under the banner of castaways, not fair with noisy kids next door & paper thin walls. No would not recommend to anyone.

Review 53:Breakfast and dinner time opening are quite late. 7am for breakfast, 6pm for dinner. with young children this is quite late.

Review 54:Spectacular view, excellent food. Very good service.

Review 55:The staff seemed to always look busy but never service anyone. Always had to ask for another drink or go up and place orders. once we were at the table we felt like we were up to our own devices. we would have spent more money if someone had just come to the table to see if we wanted anything. in the end we just asked for the bill and went to our rooms and ate snacks and drinks we had brought with us. Checking into the resort we did not realise there were two different resorts. We checked in through booking.com and it just said a rainforest room and thinking we got a good deal we booked it with the understanding we were still in the main resort. Instead we got this awful run down staff accommodation building. We complained and luckily they had another room. Suggest that you divide the two resorts up and advertise as two different places with different marketing.

Review 56:the main resort is excellent and the location on the water was stunning and the reason we booked at the resort.

Review 57:My only complaint would be that a beachfront room wasn't available!!

Review 58:Mission Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia and Castaways has the ideal location situated right on the beach. Lounging by the pool or sitting in the bar you always have a sensational outlook. The place is so relaxing and quiet. We were there midweek and there were no children which was an added bonus. We booked an economic rainforest room which is 50 metres away from the main property, this was all that was available. The room was slightly dated but very clean and very comfortable. You only need the room for sleeping in Mission Beach. I thought it was excellent value for money.

Review 59:The pool fountain was located outside our window, very noisy at night and we were unable to hear the ocean. Hotel rooms very small with no balcony. (we did know this upon booking so were expecting)

Review 60:Location is fantastic opposite the beach.. Our room looked over the pool to the beach. Walking distances to restaurants, café and bars.

Review 61:Did not get told we would not be staying in the main building when we booked. Instead we got put in what looked like the old toilet block that was down the road 150m

Review 62:Great location and food was amazing.

Review 63:We loved everything, the staff are so lovely and helpful. Great location...close to beach and great pool area if windy. A real stop and drop holiday! We will be back!

Review 64:The resort is in a lovely location right on the beach and within walking distance of the small collection of shops of Mission Beach. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

Review 65:the tv was too small.

Review 66:the proximity to beach was excellent, the view magnificent.the staff were exceptional.the food was always well presented, prompt, and first class.the units were serviced every day, fresh linen.the pools were excellent.shops and eateries were close.

Review 67:The room was dated. We did not get one that had been refurbed. The food in the restaurant was bland and tasteless. Would definitely dine elsewhere. You are definitely paying top dollar for location and thats about it. Everything else is mediocre at best.

Review 68:The view and location was spectacular. Looks just like the photos. Cannot be faulted. The beach was gorgeous. The staff were really lovely!

Review 69:I booked online and accepted the quoted tariff. On arrival,Castaway reception staff tried to charge me a surcharge on my credit card. I stated that it was not in any booking information and refused to pay the surcharge. A booking on your site can not be made without providing a credit card number and it was the first thing the receptionist asked for. I offered to cancel my booking and go somewhere else. Their eftpos terminal is programmed to charge this impost which is nothing more than gouging. The manager relented and gave me a credit to offset the surcharge. I was not impressed and may not stay there again. Furthermore, the room we were given was above the dining room and was noisy. Not a pleasant experience.....all things considered.

Review 70:I have stayed at this location on three previous occasions. I enjoy the view. The service was generally good.

Review 71:The fridge was so small you could hardly fit anything in. The other problem we had was the bath to be too high as I got a terrible bruise trying to get out of it. I just didn't find it as welcoming as most of the places we have stayed on our travels.

Review 72:The girl who checked us in was very helpful to change our room to a ground floor room. She was lovely. The room was good and spacious and the beachfront view was great.

Review 73:We ended up in the "rainforest property" which was a completely different property but we were still able to use the main resort facilities. The room was a pretty standard motel style room but for a resort style price. The pool at the complex we stayed in definitely needed a little attention.

Review 74:The Location was fantastic and the restaurant had a view that takes your breath away, a shame the food wasn't as good as the vista.

Review 75:Our dinner on the last night was not good but I know you were busy. It spoilt our opinion of the meals.

Review 76:I loved the fact we were right on the beach and also had a lovely pool. The service was good. I enjoyed the luncheon menu but it would have been good to have some of those items of food for dinner. The bed was the most comfortable I have slept in.

Review 77:We stayed in a forest view room and it was lovely, the gardens were a credit to management and I'm sure Southern visitors would be impressed with the tropical feel of the place .Great swimming pool, but please fix the pool ladder ,it is very dangerous.

Review 78:Absolutely gorgeous, room by the beach, kids could run free. Great food, great pool, great drinks. Very glad we had a room by the beach, the other building was more like a converted motel and didn't have the same view or feel at all.

Review 79:Small servings at dinner. Rainforest units are not acceptable, 503 still showed evidence of water leaks and in need of decorating.

Review 80:Staff and food quality

Review 81:We stayed at a seperate location across the road from the main resort. This was a three star room at best.. It was marketed under a 4 star banner being part of the main complex. The room was outdated and overpriced. Breakfast was very average. My car was infested with green ants. (Yeah I know it's north Qld) The bathroom was straight out of the nineties..sadly castaways has been left to run down terribly. Check out the trimmings in the main area, fans need replacing, arcitraves need replacing or painting.. there were broken chairs, the decks need oiling etc etc. if you ask the big bucks, give the appropriate in return castaways... A little disappointing.

Review 82:The location is great

Review 83:You could here the people in the next room. When you had a shower I could here the man in the next room going to the toilet. Curtains were to thin and made the room so bright until they were turned off at 11 pm not a good stay.

Review 84:We were in a room away from the main building. We had a shed in front of our room. We were told we would not be in the main building but didn't expect sub standard accommodation

Review 85:The kitchen in the 2 bedroom spar unit was sparsely equipped if you want to prepare some of your own meals but it's a good excuse to eat out every night.

Review 86:The location is perfect and the staff are helpful and friendly. It's only a short walk to the other restaurants and shops nearby.

Review 87:The bed was uncomfortable. The rooms were not what we expected for the price.

Review 88:Location was excellent. Loved rainbow beach. The restaurant staff and ambience was excellent.

Review 89:Looked at 45 pictures, but was located at another "sister" hotel across the road. Felt VERY downgraded as we thought we had booked to stay at the resort

Review 90:Rainforest Hotel rooms are looking pretty tired. Would be willing to pay a bit more if the rooms were upgraded (matching tiles, newer doors, rendered walls)

Review 91:Excellent location. Exceptional customer service. Loved the full use of all the resort facilities even though we stayed in the budget accommodation. Great continental breakfast selection.

Review 92:Internet doesn't work very well at all. Quite expensive compared to other places. Noisy- could hear the people next door talking.

Review 93:Great location, fabulous view. Breakfast was good

Review 94:We were driving through Mission Beach and needed a place to stop for the night. We chose Castaways after their budget rainforest room came up in a Google search. The only issue we had was we were only staying one night ... we could have happily stayed for a week. The staff were friendly, the room, although budget, was clean and comfortable and well-appointed. The accommodation is right on the beach. We had access to all the amenities (including gym, laundry and free Wi-Fi), undercover parking and also had a complimentary continental breakfast that was far above the usual fare. It included Danish pastries, croissants, assorted breads, fresh fruits, cereals, yoghurt and juices. We will be back to Castaways for a much longer stay so we can explore the beautiful Mission Beach area.

Review 95:It was the older separate part of the resort. The bathroom was clean but aged with dark mould too old to clean off, I think the two sections should be listed separately

Review 96:Excellent breakfast included in the price, spacious room with balcony upgrade, very comfortable bed

Review 97:Needs two bedside lights and some of the furniture in the main resort looked as if it had been retrieved unsuccessfully from the previous cyclone.

Review 98:It was more than expected in accommodation for their motel room and a good continental breakfast was included.

Review 99:Unexpectedly this was located away from the main resort. Obviously an old motel taken over. Difficult parking, pretty old and tired room considering the price.

Review 100:Lovely tropical garden to sit by. Quite clean.

Review 101:The two different locations, this should be stated so u know ur not staying at the lovely main location on the beach. It was disappointing finding out we had to cross over roads and was staying somewhere else that didn't match the other location

Review 102:Everything was good, room was a little disappointing, from the pictures etc it was a little disappointing. We thought we were getting something different. Put overall a good stay with lovely staff.

Review 103:Staff make the difference between the people renting the forest rooms and the people renting the rooms on the beach. And also felt like for single people they don't take same attention as one couple. It didn't felt vey right.

Review 104:Super Nice location! Beautiful view from the restaurant

Review 105:None!

Review 106:Fantastic Decorated with style Perfectly located in front of a beautiful beach Nice restaurant for breakfast and diner Great swimming pool for those who don't feel to swim in the sea

Review 107:The bathroom in my room (Room 307) was very dated and tired, with a grubby shower curtain and discoloured tile grouting and paintwork that needed refreshing. The bathroom unfortunately let down the otherwise excellent standard of the room. Also I was told I could check out prior to 7am, but when I tried to do so I was told 'the system' would not allow it and I would be emailed my final bill. Two days later this still has not happened.

Review 108:Design and decor of the public areas is excellent

Review 109:No rainforest at the rainforest rooms just an old motel they've expanded into. Room was made of concrete blocks. Outside courtyard had lights on all night and see through curtains so no sleep in the small uncomfortable bed

Review 110:Good breakfast included Main hotel has lovely outlook onto stunning beach but rainforest rooms are a block away and have no view and no comfort

Review 111:The view from our room was amazing! Was great to sit on the lounge on the balcony and relax with a drink and listen to the waves while enjoying the view! Staff were great as well!

Review 112:Outdoor chair snapped and broke whilst my husband was sitting in it, reported it to front desk staff - requested for a new chair however was not replaced nor followed up, had to ask again the following day... From a hotel background I would ensure my staff complete a follow up call and at the very least check he was ok. Restaurant staff very hit and miss, some were great others lacking in all aspects of service on our final morning after standing around for 5 mins or so we seated ourselves at breakfast and didn't bother to have our room marked off as no one had bothered to acknowledge us.

Review 113:Location was brilliant

Review 114:Felt a bit misled with the booking site Not expecting to put into another property that is well below the resort standard, will read the fine print if there is a next time

Review 115:Location, staff

Review 116:We were located in the rainforest resort. I didn't like it at all, old and run down. I wouldn't recommend it to others.

Review 117:The Bar and restaurant. The food was amazing.

Review 118:Excessively soft beds. Limited breakfast selection. No plunger coffee; offered only Nescafe or a ' purchased' one from machine. Happy hour a nice idea to meet others but a cosy drinks corner essential. One pool could be heated ideally.

Review 119:Proximity to beach.

Review 120:Very poor quality room for the price. We had stayed in the rainforest room when previously an independent motel earlier this year. It now cost $30 pn more and facilities on site were less. In the room the ph didnt work and the shower so difficult to operate that it was not possible to use in in the morning. We chose to checkout early and find alternate accom for our second night. The staff did not offer any meaningful resolution to our concerns. The actual castaway resort room may have been a better standard..but we not recommend this accommodation to anyone. For the same price we moved to the Eco Village and had a beautifuly appointed fresh/clean room with kingsize bed, in room spa..private balcony with water feature and excellent care taken by staff.

Review 121:Location and view of the cafe for breakfast..BUT not on same ste as our room.

Review 122:The rooms need some renovations as they looked tired. We stayed in the island suite which was over priced considering how old it was. Was also disappointed with breakfast, it was cereal, pastries and fruit. I think resorts should provide buffet breakfast.

Review 123:We really enjoyed the location and view from property. The staff were also extremely helpful and friendly.

Review 124:We paid for breakfast and on arrival we were told that we would have to pay for a cooked vp breakfast this was not stated on our booking. No decaf coffe in room or restaurant. Paid for ocean view room, but to sea the ocean we had to look over the pool and through the security fence.

Review 125:Rooms are nothing special, on the small side and need some love. A good coat of paint and patched up professionally would go along way. The continental breakfast was not very inspiring.

Review 126:Great location, lovely pool and dining area. Lovely to sip a cool drink with such a beautiful view.

Review 127:Has a great restaurant right at the ocean - and the continental breakfast, (included in the room price), was like the icing on the cake - therefore it receives the highest scores on both location and value for money.

Review 128:Aircon in the room didn't work. The bathroom door was rotten at the bottom and tiles appeared to be falling off the walls. We stayed in the property across the road from the main building and this definitely requires updating/renovation.

Review 129:A shuttle service would have been handy (I just got a cab from, and back to, the greyhound stop).

Review 130:The beachfront location is amazing, all the staff were very friendly, and the cocktails were delicious! The included breakfast is basic but sufficient. Having a cheaper (motel style) room that still had access to all the facilities was good. Saved me some money but I still got to hang by the pool!
