Reviews for Aburaya Tousen

Review 1:The hotel facilities, rooms, and views are quite splendid. Loved looking out our window and really blown away by the roof top baths. Something I noticed about Japan in general is their attention to detail. This hotel really thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Review 2:Its not as close to the train station as the map suggests because of the hilly train, luckily they picked us up at the train station without us even asking for a ride. Close in distance, but not walking if you have luggage.

Review 3:Amazing place to stay. We came to see the snow monkeys, it was five star service the whole time. It was a modern onsen. We had three rooms with the hot tubs on the balcony, seriously amazing to be able to dip whenever you want. We also had in room massages. I love the restaurant also, we had a lovely kaiseki dinner there. Most of the staff members we spoke to spoke pretty great english, which is really rare in Japan. And the owner came to speak to us during dinner to welcome us, and sent us off when we left. They took us to the monkey park on a private shuttle, and also organized for a taxi back that was extremely on time. Seriously can't rave about this hotel more, every step of the way they were impeccable. Not to mention the hotel is so clean its really a wonder how they could possibly keep it so clean.

Review 4:Everything was just superb!

Review 5:Excellent and very helpful staff. Great location, just a few minutes walk from the station. Nice view from the room to the mountains and river. Very spacious and clean room. Wonderful onsen on the top floor with a great view. Tasty and various breakfast. Free transfer to the Snow Monkey Park.

Review 6:I like everthing and would stay again

Review 7:We had a private dinner on Christmas night which was outstanding. Hotel staff picked us up and dropped us off at station aswell as taking us up to Snow Monkey Park

Review 8:No shuttle bus at all times( we arrived with the 13:00 hour train ) its not complicated and only a few minutes walk but be aware. Also no shuttle to the snow monkeys during noon time (our arrival time) but they took us there with another couple that arrived with us. Must admit the best place we stayed in

Review 9:The staffs attitude was superb. When we checked in we were greeted by one of the staff members ( we were greeted with tea and a Japanese sweet - great opening) this staff member escorted us to our room and explained everything about the room . We reserved a private bath since I was with a teenager and she waited for us in place on time . The private small bath was great - very hot -but pleasant in a -1 c degree outside - great fun The breakfast was also Japanese but also western type so we could find what to eat.

Review 10:Stayed in late December, very cold outside but still a bit overheated.

Review 11:Huuuuge ryokan with many corridors, huge awesome bath and rotenburo. Very high standing. Recommended for enjoying onsen in okuhida valley

Review 12:The staffs are friendly & helpful. The room is of a good size for 3 pax with space for 3 medium luggage. Approx. 7 mins walk with a slope to reach the train station and bus station. Shuttle bus service is provided according to train arrival time.

Review 13:The water pressure in the bathroom was very weak and hard to control. But there again, most people would take their baths at the onsen.

Review 14:Almost everything! The staff were friendly and attentive. The Kaiseki dinner was fantastic (they served 2 different sets if you stay for 2 nights). The owner was such a lovely lady, she came by to our dining room to introduce herself and to make sure we were comfortable and happy with the service. The lounge is a quiet and peaceful space to enjoy a cup of coffee with music. The public onsens were simply magical.

Review 15:None

Review 16:The staff are friendly and helpful. They offered to drive us to the train station outside their schedule. They also gave a clear description of the place and onsen.

Review 17:The owner and staff are fantastically polite and helpful. They are completely focused on making sure that every need is attended to. Just a fabulous experience for our last night in Japan

Review 18:Enjoyed my stay there. Nothing negative

Review 19:Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent view from our rooms. Nice lounge to laze around with coffee and drinks provided

Review 20:The food was amazing as well as the view from our room. The owner met us several times to welcome us and to tell us goodbye when we left. Rayna, a hostess was delightful! They performed a tea ceremony upon arrival as they were getting our keys and papers together. The dinner was 10 course and the food presented was different and beautiful. Breakfast served food I have never tasted before. if I had to breakdown the cost of the fabulous meals, the room itself was very affordable and I would do it again. This was the highlight of my trip because I felt I had the Japanese experience.

Review 21:Actually, nothing.

Review 22:Everything, the whole experience was fantastic! The staff there are super nice and they make the guests feel so welcomed. They drive us to nearby sigh seeing spots with no extra cost and they would drive us back to the hotel, the service was exceptional!

Review 23:Staff were very friendly and courteous. Rooms were clean and spacious. Breakfast was good. Hot baths on the roof and wonderful. Good location, 10 min drive from the monkey forest where they are bathing-hanging around the hot springs.

Review 24:The air conditioning didn't work very well.

Review 25:The outdoor baths are excellent and have a great view. The staff were all very kind, and the owner of the hotel drove us to the Snow Monkey Park when we missed the bus.

Review 26:They should have western pillows available on request.

Review 27:Great location right next to a rushing river. Get the Junior Suite with the hot spring Onsen in your room, actually on the balcony. Great Japanese food.

Review 28:We loved the staff's dedication to service. A word of caution: after staying at aburaya tousen, you may begin to question the love your family has for you. I thought the staff loved me more than my mother. The owner also came to greet us at dinner

Review 29:Great onsen, good kaiseki dinner & very helpful and personable staff. We didn't manage to get the free shuttle ride from the train stn but lucky it was about a 10-12 mins walk...unfortunately in the rain. Thank you for helping me search for my JR pass which i had lost & couldn't find.

Review 30:Lovely, helpful staff members who were always ready to assist with any query. I wish I had gone to the onset earlier! Amazing view, and a fantastic experience.

Review 31:Only disadvantage: the ski areas are s 20 minutes drive away - it is worth it

Review 32:Everything: good service, very friendly staff, breakfast is good mixture of Japanese and western style. Room was spacious and had wonderful view on the mountains. Last but not least: Onsen on 7th floor (indoor and outdoor). Definitely come back next year

Review 33:Staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Which included driving around for my husband who had gone sightseeing so they could take us to the snow monkey's earlier than planned so my kids didn't have to wait around for the next bus. Held umbrellas over us when raining, dressed in beautiful kimonos. Awesome experience for the kids and us!

Review 34:Near the rail station, staff had come to pick up at the station, free bus to the foot of monkey mountain, dinner at the hotel is good & comfort, designated staff talk in English to serve us in hospitality.

Review 35:The sleeping pillows were so hard that I couldn't sleep with them. they were filled with some roundish things and very uncomfortable

Review 36:We were treated very friendly. The room was clean and neat. We found many anemities like toe socks, teath brush, comb. Also robes, hot water heater and big bottles with shampoo and lotion were available. The spa on the top floor was just incredible. It was our first onsen experience, so we asked for how to do it before use. Everything was explained very good, so we had a great stay there. At around 7:30 pm they switch between the man and woman spa, which we didn't know. We were helped moving to the new spa then. Everything needed for using the onsen is available in the changing room and the bath. The hotel has a nice lounge room everybody can use. Good Coffee and juice is available, also a computer with internet access. Seating is nice in front of a fireplace, also outside lounge chairs are available. Breakfast was great, both Japanese and western style is being served.

Review 37:The staff were amazing, all the women were beautifully dressed in Kimono and very helpful. They spoke English well also. I loved the private onsen which you can book for an extra fee and there were a number of cheaper alternative dining options nearby.

Review 38:The staff were extreamly polite and helpful. They offered information for the local area, and provided transport to attractions and gains station free of charge. Beautiful tradinal rooms with great views and clean facilities.

Review 39:besides visiting the snow monkeys, there were not much to do in the area

Review 40:outdoor onsen in the room, the room was very clean and tastefully decorated both breakfast and dinner were excellent staff were very professional wifi was high speed

Review 41:From the moment you walked through the door you were made to feel special. The view over the snowy river was so relaxing and the opportunity to book yhe private rooftop onsen was so special.

Review 42:Not a complaint, as I'm glad I experienced a traditional Japanese bed. But just a heads up to westerners. The beds are roll out floor mats with very hard moulded pillows. (They prepare these for you while you have dinner). I ended up using cushions from the seats as pillows as I woke up with a sore neck. Still, this is part of the experience. Just be prepared. :)

Review 43:Everything about my stay was just pure hospitality. I was lost at the train station and after a local calling them I was picked up by a lovely girl in a big van and driven to the door. After checking in, I was guided to my room (junior suite with private onsen) which had to be the cleanest, aesthetically pleasing room I have ever seen. The staff spoke good English and were able to help me with everything I needed without fail. Can't speak highly enough about the staff.

Review 44:Nothing !

Review 45:The hotel is modern but manages to feel very traditional so you get the best of both worlds . The staff were exceptional , polite and helpful at all times in a genuine way , they are not just going through the motions . Our room had a private hot spring tub on the balcony , it was great to sit in it while the snow swirled around us ! Our stay was a unique experience , probably the highlight of our trip to japan . I only have one point of caution and this it NOT a criticism , the beds are traditional on the floor and the pillows are hard , if you like a soft bed you will suffer , i was fully prepared to accept it as part and parcel of the whole , others may feel differently . From the hotel we were shuttled to the Snow Monkey Park , which was a fun experience , lots of monkeys around certainly no danger of not seeing them ! I can highly recommend the little cafe ( Enza ) i think , which is just at the start of the track up to the park . lovely staff and a good place for food or drink begore you make your way up to the park .

Review 46:hate the pillow very limited times that the hotel will provide shuttle between hotel and train station.

Review 47:spacious room with my own onsen bath on the balcony. food, very polite and helpful staff free transport to the monkey park

Review 48:The staff was very friendly and courteous. The rooms were comfortable and gave you a very homy feeling with a traditional Japanese touch. Very clean…attention to details. Picked up from the Yudanaka station by the staff upon request and welcomed with green tea in the room prepared by the staff…nice touch. Owner personally saw us off upon our departure.

Review 49:Got picked up from the station, although we didn't say when we were arriving! Breakfast was excellent. Room was great. Our daughter loved the traditional feel of the place and looked wonderful in her kimono.

Review 50:The service from this hotel is the best I had so far, most of the staffs can speak english and the lady owner of the ryokan makes us feel so welcome throughout our stay. Room is traditional japanese room but is very very comfortable. The morning view from the room is simply beautiful. Meals are also very exquisite and totally worth the price we paid. But the highlight of my stay is definitely the rooftop onsen. I fell in love with it. Highly recommend you this Ryokan if you are visiting Yudanaka

Review 51:I love the onsen inside the room, the water temperature is adjustable. the room is really big. it has a small living area and also bedding area. the view from the room is also great, looking out to the city of marunouchi. The staff is very helpful, even though they speak little English.

Review 52:Everything! This place is amazing. The staff were exceptional. We were here on our honeymoon, my husbands first taste of Japan. We did not want to leave and would stay again in a heartbeat.

Hotel is actually located quite close to Yudanaka station, not too far away, but the hotel service is very attentive to the prior arrangement in our shuttle bus to take us (6pax in total) to the hotel check in, then arrange to send us to wild monkey park. As for the hotel room, comfortable environment, Japanese-style room space is big enough, the onsen is big enough, there have indoor and outdoor (there are two to three outdoor onsen that can use). In addition, meals are also good, we upgrade the dinner, there are many different various of food, also provide the famous beef and seafood available for your choice. The owner of the hotel came over & say hi to us & check if everything are good, it makes us feel very warm & comfortable. I will definitely come back, and highly recommend this hotel for staying.

Review 54:Nothing

Review 55:Great location near Yudanaka Station. There are many ski slopes in Shiga Koegn nearby. Hot spring were fantastic, highly reccomend dinner in the hotel as a special treat.

Review 56:Shower tap in room and private onsen is difficult to adjust to the appropriate temperature that I want. The private onsen shower tape is burning hot, and the one in the room takes a while to become warm which is important during winter season. There's only one convenience store(Lawson, next to train station) in the vicinity, so it's better to get the necessary supply from there first or in nagano city before heading back to the hotel.

Review 57:I've stayed there for only 2 nights and have experience good service from the hotel. The room is comfortable and comes with a nice huge window with great views of the lake and mountains in front. Knowing that I don't speak Japanese, they have assigned a English speaking person to attend to my needs during dinner time. Their staffs who are non-English speaking too give their best to explain the facilities and amenities to you in English. Plus hotel decor is nice and comfortable. Hotel location is good too which is within walking distance (without luggage) to the train and bus station that gets you to prime location which unfortunately I only realise on my last day back to nagano city since I have arrived late evening during winter time where there's no information service functioning. Fortunately I receive great help from the train attendant at the station who help to call the hotel for my pick up (since my phone dosnt work), otherwise I would be lost on my 1st day in the cold winter dark. Pick up service is available from the hotel especially if you are with luggage. Nice restaurants are within walking distance from the hotel too. Overall experience is good though with friendly staffs and helpful train station attendants :D

Review 58:Spent 2 nights here at Aburaya Tousen and it was one of the best ryokan experiences I had. Firstly, I had a great server in Hisayo who spoke impeccably English, cheerful and a very friendly young lady who ensures you have a great hospitality. The ryokan was clean and nicely maintained and from arrival and departure, it was truly a pleasure and I'm glad that I made this choice

Review 59:The pillows. Our friends who stayed at room with private onsen had softer pillows, ours (family room) was a bit hard.

Review 60:Excellent service. Great food. Super clean and comfortable rooms. Amaz onsen.

Review 61:The pillow was terrible. It felt like a sack of marbles and we were unable to use them.

Review 62:Great location. Beautiful view and spacious room. Lovely helpful staff.

Review 63:- Not quite walking distance to the train station, nor particularly conveniently located to the snow monkey park if going independently. Fortunately there was a hotel shuttle, but you can't come/go exactly as you wish.

Review 64:- In room rotemburo - Onsen on the top floor was beautiful - Meals were excellent - Service was exceptional

Review 65:The People; from the time we were picked up, the gentle, kind and helpful lady, to the people at the reception, to the owner... Very welcoming! The facilities themselves were almost top notch, and offered really good value for money. Great lobby, very nice public onsen (indoor and out) and of course the ride to the Snow monkey park! Situated about less than 5 mins in a car from the train station, and a easy 12 minute walk. Picturesque view from our room window, and a very comfortable borderline big room (by Japan standards)

Review 66:Hotel offers pick up service from station at scheduled timing. Room was really spacious for 4 persons and liked that they separate toilet and shower. Also has 2 wash basins. Staff really nice and helpful.

Review 67:As our only Ryokan experience in Japan we don't have an equivalent to compare it to, but in all my years of traveling this is up there as one of my best accommodation experiences. Although a little dated, the staff, onsen experience, scenery and town made it one of the highlights of our trip.

Review 68:- Overall not the most value for money accommodation we stayed at but I can't really fault the price when the hotel went above and beyond to be accommodating and made our stay so worth it. We were willing to pay extra for the modern facilities of having our own bathroom and having the option of hotel facilities such as the private onsen and hot rocks therapy; so this is really only a minor issue and moreso a reflection of our family's travelling budget. - The hotel serviced breakfast and dinner options were quite pricey unfortunately as we would've loved to try it. Instead we opted to eat out which worked for us as well.

Review 69:+ Close to Yudanaka Station (3 mins by car or a little under a 10 min walk). The hotel can pick you up from or drive you to the station. The shuttle wasn't at the station when we arrived but the station staff called and the hotel shuttle came within 5 mins. + Monkey Park is within a 10-15 min drive. Hotel will call a taxi or possibly even drive you there themselves. + Plenty of restaurants nearby and within walking distance. Hotel provides a map of the local neighbourhood, with recommended restaurants marked clearly. We went to a local family-run eatery right next to the hotel and it was affordable and delicious (around 700 yen for a main) + Staff was so hospitable, welcoming and helpful. We had quite a few requests and queries but they were accommodating and dealt with them all patiently and happily. Communication wasn't a problem. + Hotel is well-equipped and has very clean amenities. + Rooms maintained traditional Japanese ryokan style but clearly updated with modern fixtures. Particularly useful for travellers that have never stayed in traditional japanese inns before and even more so for families that are not so comfortable with shared bathrooms. + While there were public hot springs available for guests, we booked their private hot spring for our family only. The bath was outside on a balcony deck so to soak in the hot spring water outside in the cold air was quite the experience! We also booked the hot rocks therapy session. Both truly helped rejuvenate and relax our tired bodies.

Review 70:The staff was extremely helpful and warmth in making our stay there special. We were there during Christmas and the ryokan had a guitarist and saxophonist for the holiday cheer at the lobby!

Review 71:If you are looking for an old fashioned Japanese experience, this is the place to go. The food was superb, as were the staff. They were all extremely friendly and courteous, as is the norm when one comes into contact with the Japanese. The room was spotless and the private onsen was spectacular. It was definitely worth the splurge. I would certainly visit this ryokan again.

Review 72:Cant think of any....all good!

Review 73:Very hospitable staff. Loved our stay in traditional Japanese style. The hotel is very well equipped. Would recommend this hotel always.

Review 74:Limited ability to cater for special dietary requirements.

Review 75:The whole experience was great. The staff always made every endeavour to understand our needs and always excelled in helping us with our needs.

Review 76:Hard to find by car. In-house dining expensive - but don't try the 'restaurant' on the side street next to the hotel - its basically sitting in someone's living room and poor quality food. Good sushi place across bridge.

Review 77:Greeting by traditionally dressed staff, tea-making, private onsen bath, good quality room furnishings, courtesy of staff outstanding.

Review 78:Staff friendly and helpful with good English Good information for eating etc. wonderful service with free drop off to station and monkey park and organised holding of luggage. Lovely onsen facilities. Exemplary service

Review 79:I cannot think of anything to complain about!

Review 80:As soon as we arrived at Aburaya Tousen, we were treated like royalty. The young ladies at the front desk were very friendly and eager to help us with whatever we needed. They even printed us a timetable for the train from Yudanaka station to Nagano and one for the Shinkansen from Nagano to Tokyo. One of the ladies showed us to our room and prepared hot tea for us as she explained the accommodations of our room and hotel. We had a room with an outdoor hot tub (a must get); it felt great to soak in the tub while hearing the river flowing in the background. The view was also great. The room itself was gorgeous and very comfortable. All in all, a wonderful experience.

Review 81:Staff are very friendly and keen to Help

Review 82:the hot spring was far too hot

Review 83:very friendly staff

Review 84:The staff were super friendly and polite. Loved the outdoor private bath. Dinner was also amazing.

Review 98:Very traditional Japanese rhykan

Review 99:Everything was amazing. We've told everyone we know about how beautiful it is.

Review 100:Very expensive for what you get

Review 101:Stay if you want a japanese experience, but not comfortable for western travellers for too long.

Review 102:Nice rooms, great food, great spa!

Review 103:Everything is good.

Review 104:The onsen facilities were of a top standard along with the staff.

Review 105:Pillows were possibly traditional but uncomfortable for us because we were not very soft

Review 106:Staff were very attentive and helpful

Review 107:Onsen and beautiful view from room

Review 108:Lovely staff Private dining was fabulous Onsen one of the best at any Ryokan we stayed in
